EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Enterprises consistently underestimate the network implications of digital transformation, making futureproofing the network for any type of edge anywhere ever more critical, concludes our survey of IT professionals.

It’s no secret that CIOs everywhere are looking at digital transformation. And regardless if

your digital initiative involves cloud migration, global expansion, mobile/remote workforce,

or rapid network expansion, the right infrastructure with the right performance and security

levels is critical. So how ready are enterprise networks for the digital era? That’s what we

wanted to find out.

In this, Cato’s fourth annual WAN survey, we dove deep into the quantitative and qualitative

experience of network transformation. We surveyed 1333 IT professionals about their

budgets, challenges, and spending plans for networking and security in 2020. We also

probed them about their network’s digital readiness, asking them to rate their network’s

agility, management and operations, performance, and security. We then divided those

results by backbone types, pre- and post-digital transformation and measured the change

in ratings, what we call “confidence” (see “About the Survey”).

After sifting through thousands of data points, three key messages emerged. The first:

It’s difficult to predict the network impact of digital transformation. Consistently,

respondents before digital transformation were more confident in their networks than

those post-digital transformation. Not only was this true for those respondents with MPLS

backbones but, more surprising, it was even true for those with SD-WAN.

This leads us to our second major finding: SD-WAN alone cannot deliver complete

WAN transformation. Respondents with SD-WANs were consistently let down by

their networks post-digital transformation. Yes, SD-WAN provides an affordable, agile

replacement for MPLS, but SD-WAN fails to deliver the security, cloud readiness,

or mobility often required by digital transformation projects. As a result, those who

transitioned to SD-WAN appliances were, on average, less confident in their networks

post-digital transformation.

The only exception to this trend were those companies who adopted a specialized kind of

SD-WAN -- secure access service edge (SASE, pronounced “sassy”). The new architecture

model defined by Gartner last summer, connects and secures sites, cloud resources, and

mobile users with a global, cloud service. SASE converges SD-WAN (and other networking

capabilities) and a complete security stack into a global, cloud-native platform.

Overall, this leads us to our third major finding: Enterprises need to think beyond site-to-

site connectivity to futureproof their networks. If SASE is any indication, networking

professionals who for so long have specialized in establishing reliable, predictable site-to-site

connections, need to broaden their considerations when replacing MPLS to other areas,

such as cloud, mobility, and especially security.

Failure to factor advanced security into any SD-WAN forces the deployment of additional

solutions, which can impede visibility and complicate the deployment experience. While

64% of SASE users reported being able to protect locations and site-to-site connections

from threats post deployment, only 37% of SD-WAN respondents made that claim. In short,

making a tactical decision to only address MPLS limitations, ultimately leads to long-term

dissatisfaction in one’s network.

Gartner expects at least 40% of enterprises will have explicit

strategies to adopt SASE by 2024. Perhaps the question

then for any company considering WAN transformation in

2020 isn’t if companies should adopt SASE but when will

they adopt SASE.

Mobility Becomes Strategic for Network Buyers

Although site connectivity might drive the major networking challenges overall in 2020,

when considering IT executives (respondents with the director title and higher), the

importance of managing mobile/remote access grew significantly, becoming the second

most popular networking challenge.

Security is Essential for WAN Transformation in 2020

The three most popular primary security challenges for 2020 underscore the importance

of including a lean, multi-edge security strategy in your WAN transformation plans --

defending against emerging threats like malware/ransomware (66%), enforcing corporate

security policies on mobile users (52%), and cost of buying and managing security

appliance and software (51%).

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION NEEDS A BETTER NETWORK

Overall, respondents remain optimistic about their networking and security outlook. More than half (56%) expected their networking budgets to grow in 2020, 73% expected the same for their security budgets.

And why not? Digital initiatives are driving a rethinking of legacy networks, offering new

opportunities for IT professionals. The shift to the cloud, edge computing, and mobility have,

as Gartner puts it, driven an inversion of enterprise traffic patterns where the “datacenter is

no longer the center of the universe.” Cloud adoption and mobility, both hallmarks of digital

initiatives, were evident in our findings.

The question is no longer if legacy networking and security architectures need to adapt but

how they should change. In looking at our results by network type, respondents gave MPLS

the lowest marks. (The other network types were MPLS with VPN, SD-WAN, and SASE). In

fact, more than half (53%) of MPLS respondents supporting digital business initiatives say

their organizations are actively planning to deploy SD-WAN in the next 12 months.

One obvious reason for seeking an MPLS alternative is the bandwidth cost. Year after year,

our surveys have shown that reducing bandwidth cost is a key motivation for SD-WAN

adoption. This year was no different. But the price for MPLS bandwidth alone does not fully

explain why users are abandoning the technology.

ARE YOU TOO OPTIMISTIC ABOUT YOUR NETWORK?

To better understand why respondents are abandoning MPLS and what lessons can

be derived for any WAN transformation initiatives, we asked respondents a series

of statements evaluating their perceptions of their networks’ agility, management &

operations, performance, and security. We then grouped respondents by network,

evaluating the change in network confidence pre- and post-digital transformation.

With one exception, respondents expressed lower confidence in their networks

post-digital transformation. This was true in areas of MPLS’s presumed strength, such

as performance, and it was even true for hybrid networks as well as for SD-WAN.

At first, those results seem counter intuitive. Shouldn’t respondents be more confident

after completing their digital initiatives? After all, they had a chance to experience the

breadth of the “digital transformation capabilities” of their network.

But that’s exactly the point. The results suggest that only as organizations roll out digital

initiatives, they uncover the weaknesses in their networks. MPLS’s high bandwidth

costs drive many to deploying SD-WAN, but once the digital business requires cloud

connectivity or mobile user access, respondents realize the limitations of their network.

The aphorism, ”You don’t know what you don’t know,” seems particularly relevant to WAN

transformation initiatives.

The only exception were respondents running SASE architectures. They

expressed greater confidence post-digital transformation. SASE’s convergence

of security, cloud connectivity, mobility, and, of course, site connectivity may only be

appreciated when required by the business for digital transformation.

Let’s take a closer look at the results and see what lessons can be derived for your WAN

transformation initiative.

When assessing network agility, much has been written about the time needed to add

sites, and indeed confidence among respondents with MPLS (and MPLS with VPNs)

dropped the most around quickly adding sites or increasing bandwidth, but our results

also show that agility must factor in the time needed to add cloud resources.

Confidence among respondents who deployed an SD-WAN dropped the most when

asked about rapidly delivering new public cloud infrastructure. The opposite was also true:

SASE’s built-in cloud connectivity was a major factor in respondents being more confident

in their network agility post-digital transformation.

Management and operations showed a similar pattern, respondent confidence was high

before digital transformation but dropped off post-digital transformation across all network

types -- except SASE. With MPLS, the lack of redundant last-mile connections leaves sites

susceptible to cable cuts and other last-mile problems. Adding Internet VPNs to MPLS

improves last-mile access but still does not allow organizations to automatically overcome

last-mile issues without downtime.

SD-WAN and SASE are better able to overcome last-mile issues with active/active

configurations. The low confidence levels in SASE’s management and operations prior

to digital transformation was surprising. The increased confidence post-digital

transformation reflects significant growth in confidence in mobility and cloud

deployments -- two fundamental areas for digital transformation projects.

Delivering cloud resources is more than just providing connectivity; it’s about

providing an application experience as responsive as on-premises applications.

This point played a significant role in performance confidence.

When asked if respondents can provide access to cloud-based resources with the

performance and availability comparable to internally hosted resources, respondents

from all networks – MPLS, hybrid WAN, and SD-WAN showed significant drop off

post-digital transformation.

SASE respondents were the only ones who saw performance confidence grow post-

digital transformation. SASE solutions that include native cloud optimization improve

cloud performance out-of-the-box.

Security must be part of any WAN transformation initiative, protecting users and

resources regardless of the underlying network, managed through a single-pane-of-

glass. MPLS does not protect resources and users, and certainly not those connected to the

Internet, leading MPLS-only respondents to be significantly less confident in their network’s

security post-digital transformation. MPLS with a VPN showed little change.

SD-WAN respondents also demonstrated lower confidence in security post-digital

transformation. SD-WAN fails to restrict access to specific applications or provide the advanced

security tools needed to protect all edges – mobile devices, sites, and cloud resources.

By contrast, SASE confidence grew post-digital transformation. Converging a complete

security stack into the network allows SASE to bring granular control to sites, mobile, and cloud

resources. It’s a capability often only fully appreciated once one has tried to secure and manage

mobile users, cloud applications, or cloud datacenters.

TELCO BUNDLE CONTINUES TO FRUSTRATE RESPONDENTS

SD-WAN appliances alone are not the answer for complete WAN transformation. They

require other solutions for global connectivity and to connect, secure, and manage mobile

users and cloud resources. Some enterprise will pursue such an approach on their own,

but many are turning to service providers to do that integration for them.

Yet, the telcos’ lack of agility and high cost continues to frustrate buyers. The time to deploy

new locations was the biggest telco-related frustration for all sized companies. For global

organizations, high bandwidth costs (57%, q34) was second, while for local companies,

the inflexibility of accommodating new requests (40%) came just behind. “Having

technical discussions with them (telcos) is also a pain point as they seem to have a lack of

knowledge,” says one respondent.

Respondents were particularly frustrated with telcos when connecting offices outside of

telco’s operating region to the company’s MPLS network. Then, telcos have to partner with

other telcos. “They blame the last-mile provider and have no control over them. And yet we

are not paying the last-mile provider, they are, so how come they have no control??” writes

one respondent.

SASE: THE POWER OF SD-WAN AND SECURITY FOR ALL

Ultimately, respondents are looking for a WAN transformation solution that connects and

secures all edges – sites, cloud resources, mobile users, and anything else that might

emerge tomorrow.

MPLS is obviously not the right approach but nor is SD-WAN. We’ve seen how SD-WAN

confidence decreases in many ways when confronted by the cloud, mobility, or security.

It’s no wonder that confidence in SASE, with it’s convergence of networking and security

and inclusion of the cloud and mobility, grows post-digital transformation.

As we said, Gartner expects at least 40% of enterprises to have explicit strategies to adopt

SASE by 2024. But for anyone looking at WAN transformation today, the question must be,

“Why wait until then?”

CATO: THE SASE SOLUTION FOR THE DIGITAL BUSINESS

ABOUT THE SURVEY

A total of 1,333 respondents took our 2020 WAN Spending Survey between October 21, 2019 and November 25, 2019.

Qualified respondents were those who worked in IT and are involved in the purchase of

telco services for enterprises with an SD-WAN or MPLS backbone (or a mix of MPLS and

Internet VPN). The vast majority (80%) of the respondents say they were moderately or

extremely involved in digital transformation.

More than half of respondents identified working for companies with a global (43%) or

regional (22%) footprint. Nearly half of respondents (43%) worked for companies with

more than 2500 employees. The vast majority (67%) had 11 or more locations with 26% of

respondents from companies with more than 100 locations. All respondents have some

cloud presence and 82% of respondents worked for organizations with two or more

physical datacenters.

Respondents worked for companies headquartered in North America (58%), Europe

(24%), Asia (21%), Middle East and Africa (5%), and Latin and South America (2%).

Remote sites were across the globe with 69% of respondents having remote sites in North

America followed by Asia (48%) and Europe (47%). Respondents were distributed across

all industries with the three most popular sectors being "manufacturing" (20%), “finance

and financial services” (13%), and “retail & consumer durables” (8%).

A broad range of areas were explored with a range of open ended and quantitative

questions. Detailed results can be found in the appendix of this report. To assess the

qualitative experience of digital transformation, we asked respondents claiming to be

moderately or extremely involved in their company’s digital transformation initiative,

whether they agreed (+50), were neutral (0), or disagreed (-50) with positive statements

reflecting their network’s characteristics -- agility, security, performance, and management

and operations.

For each characteristic, we looked at the network confidence level – the change

in average ratings before and after digital transformation. We further segmented

respondents by the type of network – MPLS, hybrid networks (MPLS and Internet-based

VPN), SD-WAN, and SASE.

Your SASE journey can start today with WAN transformation or appliance refresh.

How do you pay for SASE?

The good news is, that the budget for SASE is already here. Your next security appliance

refresh, your upcoming MPLS contract renewal, or your M&A integration project – all

represent great catalysts to launch the SASE project. The migration does not have to

happen all at once, and most SASE platforms support a gradual migration process,

during which a SASE can co-exist with legacy network and security solutions until they

are fully retired.

While the SASE category defined by Gartner is new (published first in Gartner’s Hype

Cycle for Enterprise Networking 2019, its implementation is not. The Cato Cloud is a

market-proven SASE platform you can deploy today. Cato converges enterprise network

and security capabilities into a single pass software stack delivered as a cloud service.
