It is a device which replaces nervefunction lost as a result of disease or injury.

Can be used in the spinal cord to allow standing inparaplegics.

Can be used to restore hand and upper

    movement in Tetraplegics.

It records and processes inputs from outside

the body and transmits information to the

sensory nerves for interpretation by the

    brain.

    Examples: Cochlear implant to restore

    hearing, retinal cortex prostheses for

    restoring vision, extra sensory input.

Most nerves communicate via Action otentials. We communicate by Voltages Manipulationand and Injecting

    currents.Key Issues : 1) Amplitude , 2)Duration and olarity ,

    3) Spatial Selectivity

    System must be Durable.

    Device must be Palatable.

Anumber of materials have been identified asbeing safe.

Encapsulation between implant and cellsshould be more.
