Identification of High Potential and Gifted StudentsThe High Potential and Gifted Committee collects parent nominations in the annual process of identifying gifted students, including students who are new to the school. This is aligned with the new High Potential and Gifted Education Policy (2019) which recommends that school and community-wide identification processes be used to support the talent development of high potential and gifted students.
In this policy, the term 'high potential and gifted students' replace the previous term of 'gifted and talented students'. A high potential or gifted student may display:
• greater analytical depth• the ability to process information, thought
and learning more quickly, and require fewer repetitions for mastery
• greater capability in a range of skills such as fluid reasoning, creative thinking, memory and abstract reasoning
• the ability to make connections between subjects with relative ease
If you believe that your child should be considered for identification, please complete the Nomination Form below and forward it to the office.

The information booklet below describes the characteristics of high potential and gifted students and how their needs are met at Neutral Bay Public School.

Miss S.Cooper - KC Class Teacher
The students of KC worked hard last semester to learn how to read using different reading strategies, such as Chunky Monkey and Predicting Pig. We are fortunate enough to have so many helpers volunteer for reading groups each week. We enjoy learning our sight words, playing phonics games, reading books, using the Smart Trays and working on the computers in our reading group rotations. We look forward to seeing the helpers back in the classroom this semester.
1T were very excited to begin Term 3 after a well-deserved winter break. They have loved hearing about each other’s holiday adventures during News presentations. 1T are eager to commence this term's writing topic which explores different traditional and fractured fairy tales!
In mathematics this week, Year 1 have been learning about volume and capacity. Students had so much fun working together to measure the capacity of different containers using unifix cubes.
We are all looking forward to a fun-filled Term 3!

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Stage 3 News (Year 5 & 6)With some new artworks on display, 3K are so happy to be back at school for Semester 2! During Term 2, Year 3’s writing program was on Information Reports with a focus on animals, their classification, appearance, habitat and diet. 3K read many information reports on animals such as koalas and dolphins, and viewed multiple documentaries on animals such as pandas and tigers. We loved learning about tigers so much we created an artwork featuring a tiger’s face floating on top of its multilayered habitat. We used crayon, paint and water colours to create vibrant pieces of work.
3D Famous Landmarks STEM Challenge
STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop key skills including: problem solving, creativity, critical analysis, teamwork, independent thinking, initiative, communication and digital literacy.
This week, our weekly Mathematics focus is three-dimensional objects. As such, students in 6M were required to create a 3D replica of a famous landmark using the materials provided. With a time constraint of 30 minutes, students were asked to plan what materials they were going to use, draw a scaled, labelled diagram of their structure and calculate the volume and surface area of their landmark.
Students replicated the Golden Gate Bridge, the Arc De Triomphe, the Itsukushima Shrine and the Taj Mahal. Their creations are a fantastic example of creativity and teamwork!

Science and TechnologyScientist of the Month: Marie Curie
Last term, we shared the clues for the Scientist of the Month for July.
Congratulations to the following students who emailed in their answers:
Claudia T (4C), Alexandros B (3K), Lachlan T (1A), Jasmine B (3G), Kylie R (3G), Evie P (3K), Ava G (3G), Aurelia S (3K), Celine W (3S), Kacey V (3K), Oscar H (3S), Rinnah C (5B), Henry K (3K), Jocelyn F (3S), Selwyn Z (3S), Amelia P (3G), Jamie L (1G), Rianna S (3D), Justin C (3D), Aron E (3S), Kingsley H (2H), Sarah M (1M), Jack B (3D) and Sarah W (4C).
We have had such an overwhelmingly positive response to our Scientist of the Month competition, that starting next month, we will give students one week to send in their guesses. For those students who wish to guess in person rather than via email, we will put a guessing box at the science room door. Please make sure to include your full name and class.
Marie CurieOther interesting facts:
• She proved that atoms were divisible.• She is the only woman to have won
two Nobel Prizes in two different fields. She won one for physics and one for chemistry.
Science Fun at home
This term, many grades are exploring the Living World strand of the Science and Technology Syllabus.
To get into the theme of the unit, you can try a simple experiment at home to see how leaves breathe. Fill a clear container with warm water, go outside and find an ‘active’ leaf. This means a leaf that you take off a tree or plant, not one that is on the ground. Submerge the leaf in the water by placing a small pebble on top.
Place the container in direct sunlight and then leave it for an hour or two. When you come back, you will see the leaf breathing and expelling oxygen in the form of bubbles as it uses the sun’s energy for the photosynthesis process. This is where leaves convert sunlight into energy.
Here is a link to the experiment if you want to give it a try for yourself.
