Conductor’s Welcome—Cheryl Woldseth

This Mother’s Day, I am taking the day off. Actually, I am getting rejuvenated at my 35th reunion at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. It’s an all-music col-lege, so there WILL be lots of music! And my husband Jan and I are also adding on a few days to be New York City tourists.

We are so fortunate to have Tony Clements as today’s guest conductor. He is a professional brass player, with tuba his main instrument but also playing various other low brass in-struments. Tony has performed with many San Francisco Bay area symphonies and orchestras, including 21 years as the principal tubist with the Silicon Valley Symphony (formerly known as the San Jose Symphony). As a conductor, he is currently the director of the band program at Ohlone College, which features a wind ensemble, tuba ensemble, and a Brit-ish-style brass band. Several music festivals are proud to have Tony participate, including our own Music in the Moun-tains events. He is a popular SF Bay Area soloist, often be-

ing featured with high school and college bands or premiering new “solo tuba with or-chestra” compositions across the USA.

So enjoy “A Mother of All Band Concerts” with Tony at the helm. Guest announcer Tinley Ireland (Sierra Stages, also a band offspring) will guide you through today’s event, and I’ll see you at our next concert in June!

Our Conductor

Cheryl (Sutton, Baker) Woldseth has a Bachelors of Music degree in Church Music from Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ), sings, and plays many instruments. In addition to conducting the Ne-vada County Concert Band, she performs/records/tours with Sonos Handbell Ensemble, teaches music at several local schools, per-forms with the Raspberry Jam Band and Blended Metal Saxo-phones, and has served several non-profit music organizations. She is a member of the music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota, and owns the music publishing company Bronze:FX. Cheryl lives in Grass Valley.

NEWS FROM THE NCCB EXECUTIVE BOARD My name is James Joannesson Kopf and it is my great honor to serve as president of the NCCB Executive Council. On behalf of our entire membership and together with Mark Meeker, our vice president;; Maggi Shelbourn, our treas-urer;; Carla Nordstrom, our secretary;; and Michael Ireland, our president emeritus, I welcome you to our first concert of the band’s 2017 season.

Today’s concert is dedicated to MOM. Moms give us life. Then they must at some point give us wings. In between they nourish our bodies and our souls, fix our boo boos, mend our ripped jeans, and soothe our broken hearts.

We are blessed to have lots of moms in our band. Our director, Cheryl Woldseth is a mom (and recent grand-mom). A goodly portion of our members are married to moms. And please take note of the large number of young musicians in our band, all of which are the sons and daughters of moms. Many of those moms may not play in our band, but somehow find a way to get our younger members fed their supper and then load them into the car to get to our re-hearsals at 6 o’clock every Monday evening. We consider them full members of the band even though they may not toot on a tooter.

Other than our musical presentations, one of our focus points is keeping the music experience alive for young people in Nevada County. This year, we are expanding our support of music education in the public school programs and we encourage you to “stay tuned” for some exciting news in that regard. All I can tell you now is that it involves buses—lots of buses.

So, if you are lucky enough to have her near, reach over and give your mom a kiss on the cheek and a quick hug or 20. If she isn’t near, just imagine giving her a kiss on the cheek and a quick hug or 20.

She’ll know. Happy Mother’s Day

Band Member Spotlight– Shirley Dean Instruments: clarinet, handbells As one of seven kids living in Lincoln, my Daddy bought me a clarinet so I could play while he preached at street meetings in a poor area of Marysville. I continued to play through high school, a short time at Lincoln Municipal Band and also at Rocklin’s Sierra College Band, and then I moved to Reno. Starting a family and holding down a stressful job as a business manager at an auto dealership, I sadly put down my instrument. After retiring and my husband’s passing, I moved to Grass Valley to be near family. That’s when I picked up my clarinet again, and it has been a source of joy and friendship. The best thing about NCCBand is that eve-rybody helps everybody, and the best thing about retirement is playing in the band.

I also play at the First Baptist Church and take lessons from Henry Han-son (if I didn’t, I probably wouldn’t practice). Come and visit me at Em-pire Mine State Historic Park, where I volunteer as “Katie the house-keeper” at the Bourn Cottage. And ask me about gardening, especially the flowering shrubs and perennials.

My family tree has grown, between those of my own children and my many siblings. We have lots of girls and only a few boys, but I don’t mind. So many are musicians, too! In August, I am hosting a family reun-ion to celebrate our upcoming 80th birthday with my twin brother (the only sibling remaining). We expect to have family coming from Lincoln, Rocklin, and Roseville, as well as from Arizona, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Life is good!

Every year since 1971, the Nevada County Concert Band (NCCBand) brings back to life an era in Ameri-can history when the local Sunday band concert was a grand social occasion. Located in the Sierra Ne-vada foothills' gold country of Grass Valley and Nevada City, this non-profit organization performs free concerts at public parks and local events, paid only through sponsorships and donations.

In the summer, bring a picnic to the Pioneer Park concert series, or wave a flag at the curbside with the band at the Independence Day Parade;; or enjoy an indoor concert in the winter and spring. The NCCBand also performs at the Nevada County Fair, and at a street concert during the Constitution Day Celebrations’ weekend of events. The band’s many ensembles support school programs and entertain at smaller events. Our local volunteer musicians will always entertain you with a fine selection of family-friendly music.

The NCCBand’s season runs primarily from May through September, plus a holiday concert. This allows band members to participate in various school and church seasonal events, without conflict from the NCCband’s rehearsal or performance schedule. Today’s concert is the start of the band’s 2017 concert season!
