Jo Harvey is a prevention coordina-tor at the University of Nevada, Reno,a doctoral student in the EducationalLeadership program and engaged tobe married. Harveys life wasnt alwaysa picture of success; she revealed herbattle with drug and alcohol addiction

in her 2015 TEDxUniversityofNevadatalk called, Rewriting the Story of myAddiction.

The National Institute on DrugAbuse defin es add iction as a chronic, relapsing brain disease characterizedby compulsive drug seeking and usedespite harmful consequences. TheNIDA goes on to note that no singlefactor can determine how an indi-vidual will become addicted to drugs.

The number one thing Ive heardsince my TEDx talk was that I dontlook like an addict or that I dont looklike I was an alcoholic, Harvey said.

Harvey said she developed the abil-ity to maintain appearances of happi-ness and success from a young age.

She grew up with her parents inPrescott, Arizona, a small town twohours north of Phoenix.

Harvey recalled having her firstdrink at the age of 7 while on anAlaskan hiking trip with her dad andseveral of his friends. Her father gaveher a fruity alcohol beverage calledZima as a joke, according to Harvey. She said that she remembered enjoy-ing the taste, even to her 7-year-oldpalate.

I didnt have one of those knee-jerkreactions you would expect from a kidwho wo uld sa y, God, that tastes hor-rible! Harvey said. I was like, Can Ihave another?

Her introduction to alcohol at ayoung age paved the way for futureexperimentation with drugs, includ-ing marijuana and psychedelics suchas LSD by the age of 12. Her drinkinghabits had also intensified by thefifth grade with access to her parentsliquor supply.

In the environment that I grew upin, alcohol was always available, Har-vey said. My parents were extremelysocial, we always had parties and Ialways saw people drinking. It wasvery much a part of my growing up.

Harvey said that she felt a lot ofpressure to succeed from a youngage. While it helped her to achieve hergoals, it left her feeling like she alwayshad to please others.

It was in high school that her peersintroduced her to what would becomeher drug of choice high-gradecocaine.

I would definitely classify myself asone of those high-functioning users,Harvey said. I playedjunior Olympic sportsin high school and didwell academically. Ivealways been able tokeep it together.

Harvey relocated toReno with her family in1999 and started tak-ing classes at TruckeeMeadows CommunityCollege and later at UNR.

In 2005 she began working as aspokes model for a variety of com-panies. She frequently left Reno onThursday nights on redeye flights formodeling work out-of-state. Harveymodeled during the weekends andwould co me back on Monday s to be-gin the school week the following day.

She soon moved to Los Angelesto pursue modeling full time. WithHarveys condo in a Newport Beachgated community, National FootballLeague boyfriends and successful acareer, her life appeared perfect to the

outside word.Things were not as perfect as they

seemed, according to Harvey. She beganmissing work and began spiraling intoa deep depression fueled by drug andalcohol abuse.

On the outside everything looked sogreat, but I would find myself on the floorof my kitchen, not knowing if it was four

in the afternoon [or] four in the morning,Harvey said.

According to Harvey, using drugs andalcohol helped numb the pain of loneli-ness, but only served to further isolate her.It was at that point that Harvey knew sheneeded help.

I called [my mom] from my place inNewport, Harvey said. I was at the pointwhere I didnt want to live anymore. I dontwant to say I was suicidal, because I dontbelieve I had the energy to do anything atthat point.

Harveys mother Debbie helped to payfor an expensive treatment center to assist

in her daughters recovery. Harvey saidthat with a team of skilled therapists and

health practitioners, the treatment wassuccessful. In 2006 she gave up all drugsand alcohol and began to write her storyof recovery.

Ive never really shared my story,Harvey said. Ive been very secretive withit for a long time, not because Ive been

ashamed of it, but ad-diction defined me forso long. I didnt want tolive in that shadow. Butnow I see, here is a gift,I am living, breathingproof that [recovery] canhappen.

Tres Weatherford, Har-veys fiance describedher ability to survive her

past traumas as incredible.Without the pain and shame she expe-

rienced, she would not have the skills orempathy needed to help people and themin the right direction, Weatherford said.

As a prevention coordinator,Harvey saidthat for anyone going through addiction, its important to love people and seek outthe good in them even when they cannotsee it for themselves.

People are worth fighting for, but wecant save them, we can only love themuntil they can do the same, Harvey said.

Ball so hard/That shit cray, aint it Jay?/Ball so hard/What she order, fish filet/Ball so hard/Your whip so cold, this old

thing/Ball so hardIts a weekend night at Brew

Brothers inside EldoradoCasino a calling-card nightout for many University ofNevada, Reno students. KanyeWest and Jay Zs ear-splitti nghit (N*****) in Paris reverber-ates through the walls as thelive band takes a break and

bar-goers drown themselvesin alcohol mostly light beerssuch as Coors and Budweiser.

However, planted behind theBrew Brothers glass wall lie gi-ant fermentation tanks used tobrew its selection of craft beer,an unfamiliar visual for manycollege students.

That could be changingsoon, as microbrewed beerfinds itself on more and moremenus around Reno.

What is craf t beer? Accordingto the Brewers Association, theAmerican brewer is a smalland independent organizationwith annual production of sixmillion barrels of beer or less.Craft beer is generally madewith tradition al ingredie ntslike malted barley and brewed

with an eye fo r innovati on.However, what really sets

microbreweries apart frommainstream brewing compa-nies such as Budwesier, Miller,or Coors is their beers richnessin flavor and aroma. While thelatter companies mass producetheir beer, microbrewerieshave a quality-over-quantitymindset.

Brewing beer is a centuries-old practice. Howe ver, its in themidst of a renaissance. Craftbeer sales spiked 17 percent in2013, according to the BrewersAssociati on. The eye-popp ingfigure came in spite of overallbeer sales declining by 2 per-cent. Altogether, craft brewingmade up nearly 8 percent of allbeer sales in 2013.

The resurgence of craft beerhas especially breathed lifeinto Reno, a city undergoing arebirth of its own.

Everything is movingtogether the great beermovement, distilleries, mid-town restaurants, even coffee, said Eldorado publicist LauraLongero. Reno is really bring-ing a sophistication like SanFrancisco.

Longero formerly wroteabout the citys food and drinkscene for the Reno Gazette-Journal. She attributes the ex-ponential growth of craft beerwith consumers especiallymillennials growing concernof where their products comefrom and mindset to support

    local businesses.The appreciation for beer

has really come around, saidBrew Brothers brew masterGreg Hinge. People know a lot

more about beer than they useto.

The 42-year-old Hinge hasbeen working at Brew Brotherssince 1999. He remembers twodecades ago, the only two Renolocations that crafted theirown beer were Great Basinand Brew Brothers. Today, thatnumber has swelled to morethan a dozen. Places such asthe Brewers Cabinet and Bras-serie Saint James have becomelynchpins of Midtown.

    Eight different microbrews

are available at Brew Brothersand Hinge is the man behindit all. Hinge studied science atUNR before becoming a brew-er. His Danish background can

be tasted in many of his specialbrews.

His advice to the first-timecraft beer drinker is simple:start light and work your wayup.

Taste as many beers as youcan, he said. Beer is good foryou.

At Brew Brothe rs, all the cra ftbeer can sampled on a $7 plat-ter. Hinge stresses to first-timecraft beer drinkers to traintheir palate by tasting as manydifferent beers from different

brewers to pick up certainflavors and become aware ofyour tast ing.

The rise of craft beer iswelcomin g to Hinge an d to the

    identity-searching Reno as awhole.

Reno is making some greatmovement forward in itswhole beer market, Hinge. Its a small little area next tothe mountains, why shouldntReno have breweries every-where? We ha ve a great youngcrowd with the college nearbyand an influx of tourists. Its agreat place to have lots of beer. Its like a mini-Portland.

A mini-Port land without allthe hipsters, who wouldve

    thought?
