The Virginia Street Gym, located in the heart of the University of Nevada campus, is the home of the Wolf Pack volleyball team. The 1,000 seat facility has seen major renovations and improvements over the last five years including a name change prior to the 2001 season. The previously named Old Gym took its new moniker from the street that runs along the westside of the facility and through the heart of the "Biggest Little City". Formerly used as an all-sport venue, the Virginia Street Gym became the sole playing venue for the volleyball program in 1994.

A facility that is rich in history since opening in 1945, the Virginia Street Gym continues to undergo improvements. The Gym and the volleyball program received a new scorer’s table through private donations. In the spring of 2015, retractable basketball hoops were installed and has since served as the backup practice facility for the Wolf Pack men’s and women’s basketball teams.

In 2004, the Pack locker room was moved and brought into the 21st century with new state of the art lockers, video equipment, and other essentials that will make the players more comfortable in their new surroundings.

A new wood floor was installed during the summer of 2001 and features the Wolf Pack logo and Nevada Volleyball on the endlines. In an effort to continually make improvements to the facility several enhancements were made prior to the 2002 season, with the most apparent being the new seating that was installed on the lower level of the gym. The new seating features 104 chair back seats on the south side and new bleacher seating throughout the remainder of the lower level. In addition to the seating, Wolf Pack fans heard one and saw two other new additions to the gym in 2002. A new scoreboard, and overhead lighting were installed and

enhancements were made to the sound system. In addition to displaying the score of the current game, the scoreboard has several additional features including a listing of players current in the match along with two statistics categories for each of the players, kills, and service aces. Additionally the scoreboard lists games won by each team and the scores of the previous completed games of the match along the bottom. The 2003 season saw the addition of a second scoreboard on the west end of the gym that allows all spectators to see the score of the match from all seats.

Funding for the improvements has come from many sources: The E.L. Wiegand Foundation (bleachers), SBC (east-scoreboard), Nevada Lighting-Mario Dimini (lighting), Northwest Datacom-Greg Lafayette (west-scoreboard), Fleet Air Conditioning (new locker room air conditioning), The University of Nevada, and the Wolf Pack Athletic Department.

The gym hosted three-consecutive Western Athletic Conference Tournaments from 2002 through 2004 and the Pack finished second in 2002 and 2004.

The University of Nevada hired Lee Nelson, a former Wolf Pack assistant coach and alum, as the head coach of the women’s volleyball program on Jan. 12, 2015.

In just one season, Nelson took Nevada to its best Mountain West finish ever. Shortly after, he announced an incredibly strong recruiting class with the potential to make an immediate impact on the court, a neccesity after the team lost four starters after his first season.

Nelson came to Nevada after a strong three-year run as an assistant coach at the University of Miami where he helped lead the Hurricanes to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. He previously served as a Wolf Pack assistant coach in 1999 and received his Master’s degree from Nevada in history.

“I want to thank Doug Knuth, Rhonda Bennett and the entire hiring committee for offering me this tremendous opportunity to be the next head coach of Nevada volleyball,” Nelson said. “The values and principles embraced by the members of the Wolf Pack athletic department meshed so well with my own that I immediately felt at home.”

Nelson, 47, played collegiately at UC Santa Barbara from 1985-89 and helped the Gauchos to an appearance in the NCAA Championship match in 1988. He played professionally in Finland and The Netherlands before embarking on a coaching career that includes time at high school and club levels in addition to serving as an assistant coach for top men’s and women’s programs in the country.

“I am thrilled we hired Lee as our new head volleyball coach,” Knuth said. “Lee has played, recruited and coached at the highest levels of the sport. He is a man of great character and integrity who will instantly relate with our current players, recruits, parents and everyone who comes in contact with the volleyball program.”

“As a Nevada alum, Lee is excited about returning to Reno and participating in the growth and vibrancy of Wolf Pack athletics, the University of Nevada and the Northern Nevada

community. I couldn’t be more excited to have Lee Nelson join our Wolf Pack family and begin the process of building our volleyball program,” Knuth said on the hiring.

Prior to his three-year run at Miami (2012-14), Nelson was the associate head coach of the men’s program at UCSB for four years, which included an appearance in the NCAA Championship match in 2011. That was his second stint with the men’s program at UCSB, having worked there

from 1997-99 as well.

Nelson also served as an assistant for the women’s program at UCSB in 2011. Nelson has also coached at Fresno State and Santa Barbara City College in addition to coaching club volleyball and at the high school level in his career.

During his previous stint at Nevada, Nelson coached a number of all-conference selections including Kelli LaBossiere and Nevada Hall of Famers Suzanne Stonebarger and Michelle More

“I met a number of members of the Wolf Pack family and a recurring theme was how excited they were to be at Nevada,” Nelson said when first arriving to campus. “Their excitement was contagious and I can’t wait to get back to Reno, roll up my sleeves and start working towards getting the Wolf Pack to the top of the Mountain West.”

During his collegiate playing days, he was a teammate of Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara. In 1989, he ranked third in the country in hitting percentage. Nelson was invited to the USA National Team tryouts in 1986 and 1989.

Nelson, a native of Santa Barbara, graduated from UCSB in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree with a double major in history and environmental studies.

Record Book Note:

Collegiate women’s volleyball adopted the rally scoring system prior to the 2001 season with winning team being the first to score 30 points with a two point advantage except for the fifth game which is played to 15 points. A point is now scored on every serve of the match. Thus statistical opportunities are different for those players who competed prior to the adoption of the rally system and those with the rally system. The Nevada record book does not distinguish between the two different scoring systems.
