Dear Traveler,In recent years more and more people are asking us to provide shorter expeditions on the National Geographic Explorer from time to time. Here you have the best of both worlds. Two relatively short voyages to choose from, or both combined for a longer one. And, because this is coming to you with fairly short notice, we would be delighted to provide you with complimentary economy airfare (see page 24.) Or, if you prefer, business class, we’ll simply charge you the difference.

If the Azores and Madeira are on more than a few people’s bucket lists, I’d be very surprised. And I can assure you that few travel companies understand the wonders of these remote islands. However, our team—from the National Geographic experts in our orbit, to our well-traveled expedition team—does. Therefore, we are able to offer you an itinerary that will amply reward your time and curiosity. Our team has custom-crafted discoveries and unforgettable experiences, including the chance to see Madeira’s renowned gardens at their peak.

On the second itinerary, we take a route along the Iberian coast that is anything but off-the-beaten track. Portugal and Spain are countries that have drawn travelers like bees to flowers for centuries. Given that we are known for our explorations of remote, untrammeled regions, our interest in this coast may seem surprising. But when you selectively look, as our expedition team will, and regard the coast through the lens of history, culture and nature—familiar lands becomes strange, remarkable and new, and learning becomes a great adventure.

Both itineraries offer lovers of history much to love. And fans of food, wine, culture, and beauty will experience a feast for all the senses. Plus, there are engaging people to travel with and learn from. National Geographic photographers Sisse Brimberg and Cotton Coulson will be on both voyages, offering their assistance, plus their engaging “On Assignment” exercises for anyone with a camera who enjoys storytelling (see page 18). Ethnomusicologist Jacob Edgar, also on both voyages, will weave a spell as he contributes to the voyages’ ongoing narrative through music and performances (see page 17). And there’s much more, as you will undoubtedly discover inside.

I hope you will decide to experience either, or both, of these uniquely satisfying expeditions through time and history. On behalf of our expedition team, we look forward to the prospect of welcoming you aboard National Geographic Explorer soon.

All the best,

Sven-Olof Lindblad

P.S. Combine these two expeditions into one in-depth journey and save 10% on your voyage cost.

TWO ROUTES THROUGH

TIME & HISTORYTake the first itinerary to Europe’s wildest destination, the Azores

and its neighbor Madeira, and you’ll experience time as it used

to be; measured in the slow cooking of a stew in the ground or

the alchemy of juice turning slowly into

wine. Or, take the second itinerary, along

the Iberian Peninsula, and experience

time as history stilled into form—forts,

cathedrals, palaces, museums—panning

centuries and mutely speaking volumes.

We’ll use the sea in the timeless way

to discover the traditions of seafaring

people and cultures.

Top: The gleaming 20th-century Guggenheim Bilbao (top right). Above: See scrimshaw art (on 50-year-old whale teeth) in the Azores, and sample the famous Madeira wines.

Built by Moorish kings with rich mosaics, fountains and splendid gardens, the Alhambra Palace is considered one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Europe’s wildest destination? The Azores. A verdant paradise of nine islands, strung across some 400 miles of Atlantic Ocean, these islands teem with natural beauty—lush meadows, clear lakes, and ravishing vistas, dotted with ancient stone farmhouses.

In a recent survey of the world’s most appealing destinations—islands—National Geographic, using a panel of 522 experts and a survey designed to measure “integrity of place,” rated the Azores among the top 3 of 111 islands surveyed, flanked by Denmark’s Faroes and Norway’s Lofoten Islands. Travelers who have had the opportunity to explore the Faroes or Lofoten with us know. And those yet to experience islands of this caliber are in for a soul-stirring discovery.

And then there’s Madeira, rightly known as ‘the’ garden island, where the walking is world-class. We’ll stroll like locals along the levadas (irrigation channels cut into the hillside) through com-munities where agricultural traditions have endured for centuries, and into the cool shadows of the endemic Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. And linger over fine old Madeira wines, a product of the grand Portuguese seafaring tradition, with a key role, as we’ll learn from our voyage historian, in the history of the embryonic United States. And we’ll conclude our explorations in romantic Sevilla, Spain where all the images of Andalucía, from orange trees and flamenco to lace fans and mantillas, come alive before our eyes and ears.

10 DAYS/8 NIGHTS | Azores to Sevilla: Island Wonders and Fabled ShoresEXPEDITION DETAILS: DATE: March 27, 2015 | PRICES: See page 22.

SPECIAL OFFER: Complimentary airfare. (See page 24 for details.)

MAR. 27 AND 28: U.S./SÃO MIGUEL, AZORES, PORTUGAL/EMBARKFly overnight to Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel in the Azores—a lush, mountainous archi-pelago situated at the heart of the North Atlantic. Set out to the Furnas Valley to discover the Azores’ volcanic origins up close. Hike along a crater lake, explore the area’s famed hot springs, and wander the lovely botanical gardens of Terra Nostra. Later, savor a traditional cozido lunch, naturally cooked from the volcanic activity—underground! Embark National Geographic Explorer. (Mar. 28: L,D)

MAR. 29: FAIAL, AZORES The Azores archipelago is a whale-watching mecca, and we go in search of these gentle giants. Later, explore Faial on foot and see how the terrain was dramatically reshaped when an undersea volcano erupted offshore in the 1950s. The eruption covered farms and villages in ash and eventually lengthened the island by more than half a mile. Stroll along the marina at Horta, visit the excellent scrimshaw museum, and raise a glass at Peter’s Café Sport, a legendary watering hole where sea adventurers dropped off their mail. For those interested, scuba diving can be arranged. (B,L,D)

MAR. 30: SANTA MARIA, AZORESSanta Maria is historically significant as the place where Christopher Columbus first made landfall on his return from the Americas. Join our naturalists on shore, hiking the island’s trails to experience its spectacular scenery. Later, we’ll be joined by local whale experts, who will guide us on an afternoon of whale-watching. Like the Maasai trackers of East Africa, these local experts have ancestral ties to their surroundings and an instinct for scouting its wild inhabitants. (B,L,D)

Opened on Christmas Day 1918, Peter’s Café Sport remains the watering hole of the yachting world. Accomplished sailors, including Jacques Cousteau, have stopped in, and some have had their likenesses captured in scrimshaw.

Frequent patron, aviator and sailor Sir Francis Chichester was the first person to sail single-handed around the world by the “Clipper route” and the fastest circumnavigator, in nine months and one day overall.

The thermal town of Furnas is like no other. Locals use the earth’s heat to slow-cook stews by burying their casserole dishes underground!

MAR. 31 TO APR. 2: AT SEA/MADEIRA A day at sea brings us to the beautiful island of Madeira, often referred to as the “floating garden of the Atlantic” for the incredible breadth of its plant life. Keep an

eye out for dolphins, porpoises, and sperm whales. On shore, go for a walk in Madeira’s Laurisilva Forest, the largest surviving area of laurel forest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander along former irrigation channels, or levadas, that network the island, and delve into maritime history at the whaling museum. Sample Madeira’s famed seafood and wines and listen to the evocative strains of fado, Portugal’s folk music. Later, choose to ride one of the island’s traditional wicker-sided toboggans down the steep streets of Monte, or hike along the windswept headland of Ponta de São Lourenço at the eastern tip of the island. (B,L,D)

APR. 3: AT SEA Watch for whales and seabirds, enjoy the ship’s amenities, and attend talks by our experts as we sail east to Spain. (B,L,D)

APR. 4: CÁDIZ, SPAIN/SEVILLAFrom the port city of Cádiz, we head through Spain’s southern province of Andalucía, famous for flamenco dancing. The provincial capital of Sevilla blends the vibrant culture of today with centuries of history and old-world charm. We observe the diversity of cultures found so often in Spain—the beauty of the Moorish legacy and the might of the Catholic kings. We explore the Old City, visiting Sevilla’s impressive Gothic cathedral, one of the world’s most beautiful, see its renowned Giralda bell tower (once the minaret of a mosque during Sevilla’s Moorish days), and the tomb of explorer Christopher Columbus. A highlight is our visit to the Alcázar, the Mudéjar Palace and Fortress of Spanish kings for almost seven centuries. Return to the ship in Cádiz. (B,L,D)

Encompassing two countries, our voyage spans centuries and a diversity of cultures. More importantly, it gives travelers who may have visited any of these countries previously an entirely fresh perspective—that of the Moorish diaspora, and celebrated explorers, like Columbus, who embarked this region taking the sea route to distant discoveries.

Following the contours of the Iberian Peninsula, we’ll hit the high notes, exploring five key UNESCO World Heritage sites and other wonders, including the Portuguese Algarve region. We’ll have the luxury of simply and efficiently arriving through the ‘front door’ of the sea, and focusing on what we’ve come to see, from the Alhambra Palace and the Alcázar to the futuristic contours of the Bilbao Guggenheim, and from the wines of Oporto to the legendary Andalusian cuisine.

And as a counterbalance, we’ll visit Gibraltar, the British possession at the eastern end of the Strait of Gibraltar. Wonderful views and the brilliant white Jurassic limestone of the rock itself shines in the sun and marks the great harbor which for centuries has provided safe haven for vessels traversing the Strait.

APR. 3-5: U.S./SEVILLA, SPAIN/CÁDIZ/EMBARKDepart on an overnight flight to Sevilla, the sunny capital of Andalucía. After lunch, we transfer to the Melia Seville Hotel and have the afternoon at leisure. The next day we explore the Old City, seeing the impressive Gothic Cathedral and Giralda Tower from Moorish times, the tomb of Christopher Columbus, and the Alcázar, the royal palace and gardens where the King and Queen of Spain greeted Columbus on his return from the new world. In the late afternoon, we drive through the picturesque Andalucian countryside bound for Cádiz, where we embark our ship. (Apr. 4: L, D; Apr. 5: B,L,D)

APR. 6: MOTRIL, SPAIN/GRANADA Dock in Motril and skirt the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the drive north to Granada, the last stronghold of the Moors, which only fell to Catholic monarchs in 1492. Granada is a fairytale of a city with its backdrop of stunning Moorish architecture. We ascend to the Alhambra, the magnificent fortress-palace that has dominated the city skyline since it was built in the 13th century. Explore the breathtak-ing courtyards, fountains, and gardens of this World Heritage site, and venture into the Generalife, the summer palace of the Moorish rulers. Enjoy a lunch of Andalucian specialties at the historic and beauti-ful Alhambra Palace Hotel. Sail through the Strait of Gibraltar later today. (B,L,D)

APR. 7: GIBRALTAR, U.K.This morning we arrive in Gibraltar. This British rock fortress is one of the few places in the world where you can see two continents at once. We explore The Rock by minibus and spend some time with the famous Barbary Apes, Gibraltar macaques, probably originally brought over from Africa by the Moors. Legend has it that as long as the apes are in Gibraltar, Britain will hold the rock. We also visit the magnificent St. Michael’s Cave with its huge stalagmites and stalactites formed from limestone. This evening we exit the Mediterranean Sea, passing between the Pillars of Hercules and through the Strait of Gibraltar. (B,L,D)

The art of Portuguese ceramic tiles (called azulejos) can be seen everywhere in Portugal. Tiles decorate everything from the walls of churches and monasteries, to palaces, ordinary houses, shops and fountains. The Moors brought the term azulejo to the Iberian Peninsula; it’s from the Arabic word az-zulayj, meaning “polished stone.”

Two rabelos, the ancient river craft that once brought the famed port wines downriver to Oporto.

APR. 8: PORTIMÃO, ALGARVE, PORTUGALThe pastoral hills of the Algarve are a delightful blend of present-day farmlands and remnants of Moorish culture that once domi-nated the region. From Portimão, we drive north, meandering through orange groves and almond orchards to Silves, one of the oldest and typical villages on the Algarve. APR. 9: LISBON, PORTUGAL Salute Portugal’s proud maritime traditions as we approach Lisbon by sea, and set off into the city to discover a history—and even an architectural style—defined by the golden age of exploration. Peer up at the likes of Vasco da Gama and Prince Henry the Navigator at the Monument to the Discoveries. See the Tower of Belém, a UNESCO site, commissioned by King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s expedi-tions to India. Step into the cloisters of the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, the jewel of Portugal’s unique Manueline architectural style. (B,L,D)

back to the Romans and has been declared a World Heritage site for its many centuries’ worth of fine architecture. Gaze at the dazzling baroque and Romanesque interior of the Church of St. Francis, and see the 19th-century neoclassical Stock Exchange. Port wines, produced in the Douro Valley, were named after this city (as was the country itself) and we stop at a riverside port house for a tasting. (B,L,D)

APR. 11: MOUROS, SPAIN/SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA/LA CORUÑA Drive from Mouros to Santiago de Compostela, the endpoint of El Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route that has drawn the faithful for more than a thousand years. In the heart of the old city, the magnificent cathedral at Santiago de Compostela is the resting place of the remains of the patron saint of Spain, St. James. By special arrangement, witness the swinging of the extraordinary botafumeiro, a 125-pound silver incense burner. Enjoy lunch at the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos, built in the 16th century by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Meet the ship in La Coruña. (B,L,D)

APR. 12: AT SEA/BILBAO, SPAIN A relaxing morning at sea gives time for talks to discuss all that we have seen so far. In the

afternoon, lovers of art and architecture will appreciate Frank Gehry’s futuristic Bilbao Guggenheim Museum with its massive titanium wave. The 33,000 undulating titanium sheets gives an organic effect, changing color depending on light conditions. We’ll have a guided overview inside, and it is possible to walk all the way around the Museum, admiring different configurations from each perspective of the structure Philip Johnson called “the greatest building of our time.” (B,L,D)

TIM SEVERINTim Severin is one of the last traditional-style explorers. He has been testing theories of early migration for over 20 years. From Jason and the Argonauts to the descendants of Genghis Khan, Tim Severin has literally traveled the routes of myth and helped established historic fact. His most recent quest has been to identify the “real” Robinson Crusoe. An insatiable curiosity has led Tim around the world. He made his first expedition by motorcycle along the route of Marco Polo while still a student at Oxford. Among his many adventures, Tim sailed a leather boat across the North Atlantic in the wake of St. Brendan and followed the route of the first Crusader knights to Jerusalem. He captained an Arab sailing ship from Muscat to China to examine the origins of Sinbad the Sailor, traveled on horseback in search of the heritage of Genghis Khan, and pursued the great white whale of Melville’s famous novel. As The New York Times wrote, “Severin’s deeds speak to us of the purity of achievement in an age where experience has become blunted by comfort and complacency.” Tim has recorded his journeys in award-winning documentary films, and written books which have won him the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, The Book of the Sea Award, a Christopher Prize and others. ü Spain & Portugal, April 3

“ From the Azores and Madeira to Spain and Portugal, these geographies offer a

wealth of cultural riches, not the least of which is music. Outposts for the European

nations that colonized the Azores and Madeira, the diverse music of the places

we’ll visit reflects the emotional melodies of Portuguese folk and popular music.

We’ll hear and learn about Portugal’s rich musical traditions and its influence. From

the bouncy, foot-tapping chamarrita of the Azores to the haunting soulfulness of

fado, the Portuguese influence on these islands comes through loud and clear.

Fado, which means “fate” in Portuguese, is a powerful and heart-wrenching style

that was born from the melancholy of a seafaring culture in which families and

loved ones were often separated for months or years at a time. In Madeira, we will

hear a performance of local folk music and uncover the ways in which Portuguese

traditions were maintained and adapted.

Their songs and stories will give you unparalleled insight into the people and

traditions of this part of the world, and their

compelling music will provide an unforgettable

soundtrack to a memorable journey.”

In 2006, he founded the record label Cumbancha. Days aboard National Geographic Explorer are filled with active, engaging adventures, yet somehow time manages to expand to include everything else you want to do, too. Establish a beachhead on a sunny outdoor deck, in the observation lounge, or any of a dozen nooks and crannies. Curl up and catch up on your reading, or learn about a subject that interests you in the library. Work out, unwind, socialize—it’s part of the expedition experience.

LIFE ABOARD HAPPENS AT KNOT SPEED

Dining is an interesting and varied daily experience: completely casual, with no assigned seating, and the opportunity to have a changing cast of dining companions, from fellow guests to expedition team members and special experts. You can choose the radiant, windowed dining room or the more intimate bistro bar. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style, with an array of options to satisfy any yearnings. Dinner is served.

Clockwise from top left: The expansive aft deck is a welcoming place—perfect for a snack, tea time or reading. And it’s the spot for a morning wellness stretch or yoga in the invigorating air. Browse the library to learn about a new topic, or catch up on the latest novel. The fitness center offers a panoramic view instead of the usual gym TV screens, and you can finish off your day in the relaxing sauna.
