QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
As Advent is a preparation time for Christmas, we begin
to look at some questions regarding the incarnation of
Christ (that is the enfleshment of God). Some of those
questions are:
Should Christ’s birth been made known to all people
at that time?
St. Thomas Aquinas, in the Thirteenth century answered
No for three reasons. (1) To inform everyone would
have short-circuited some important events and truths
that save us. By this, St. Thomas means that some
ignorance was necessary to permit the Cross by which
we are saved. (2) Saving faith would have been
jettisoned away because faith is not needed for things
that are evident. (3) If the whole world had known from
the start that Jesus was God and Messiah, He could never
have lived an ordinary life in Nazareth, labouring and
living among us. Those years were important indicators
of His coming and living as true man.
Should Christ’s birth have been manifested by means
of the angels and the star?
It is suitable that when we teach we begin by moving
from what is known to what is unknown. Christ’s birth
was made known by means of visible apparitions.
Different audiences (Jews and Gentiles) were called, so
different approaches made sense, as each group was
differently endowed with knowledge. The Jews were
accustomed to receive Divine messages through angels
and the Gentiles, the astrologers observed the course of
the stars.
Others received through the interior instinct of the Holy
Spirit: Simeon and Anna and Elizabeth.
VOCATIONS
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your
wife…When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel
of the Lord commanded him”. Are you willing to respond
as Joseph did? If God is calling you to be a priest, deacon,
brother or sister, contact Fr. Chris Lemieux, Vocation
Director, Archdiocese of Toronto at 416-968-00997

PASTORAL REFERENCE LETTERS
From time to time the priests in the parish receive calls
requesting Pastoral Reference letters for those who would
like to teach in our separate school system. Many times
the priests do not know the individuals approaching for
these pastoral reference letters. We would like to
recommend to such individuals, that before they request
a pastoral reference letter that they seek to volunteer for
one year, in one of our many programs. We can use help
in our Confirmation program, RCIC, First Reconciliation
and Communion, and Children’s Liturgy. If you are in the
process of applying to the separate school board next year,
you may want to approach the office this year to find out
which program you can help with.
Adoration on Friday 3 January will be held at 10 a.m.
followed by Mass at 11 a.m. Please note that there will be
NO 7 PM Mass that day.
HEALTH AND HANDS
Due to the many misconceptions regarding the Catholic
Church and marriage, please note that a Catholic may marry
a non-Catholic in the Catholic Church, without his or her
conversion to the faith. In some instances, a person, who
has been previously married, can also be married in the
Catholic Church after consultation with the priest. If as a
Catholic you’re married outside of the Catholic Church
without the permission of the Church, we respectfully ask
that you refrain from receiving the Eucharist until your
marriage has been validated (“sacramentalized”) by a
Catholic priest or deacon. To remedy this situation, please
call one of the priests to make an appointment to have your
marriage validated. We are only too happy to bring back to
the couple, the graces necessary to live out their marriage,
and to reconcile them with the graces of the Eucharist.
MARRIAGE & COMMUNION
COMMUNION FOR THE HOMEBOUND
If you or anyone in your family is sick or advanced in age
and subsequently unable to attend Mass regularly and
would like Holy Communion brought to you at home on
Sunday morning, please contact the office at 905-683-
1403 and the Eucharistic Outreach coordinator will contact
you. Members of this ministry are especially sensitive to
the needs of the homebound and have a special devotion
to the Holy Eucharist.
At this time of the year when cold viruses and flus are
common place, we are conscious that we do not want to
give or receive this particular illness. At Mass, if someone
should not extend his or her hand to you, please do not be
offended. Perhaps he or she would not like to pass on his
or her germs. To ensure that we have a clean and healthy
environment, we at St. Francis de Sales Parish are
constantly changing the water in our baptismal font as well
as sanitizing all surfaces handled by the public. If you have
the flu, we ask you to please stay home and rest. The
Catholic Church does not consider missing Mass on
Sunday due to illness as a sin.
