Jake Muirhead, 12x14 CATALOG MARCH 29 - APRIL 28, 2018 AN OPEN-J URIED E XHIBITION J UROR: MARY L EE CORLETT , CURATORIAL ASSISTANT , DEPARTMENT OF MODERN P RINTS AND DRAWINGS AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART 41 ST ANNUAL Art on Paper Ellen Cornett, 19x22 Matt Fenton, 11x14 MFA (Maryland Federation of Art) invited all artists residing in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico to enter its 41 st annual Art on Paper competition. Submissions for consideration by the juror could be any original 2-D or 3-D work created on or of paper without the artist’s use of software, including but not limited to, collage, artist book, origami, printmaking, painting, sculpture, analog-only photography, and more. Final entries of artwork totaled 743 pieces by 279 artists from 36 states, Washington D.C and Canada. There are 70 works by 65 artists chosen for exhibition in MFA’s Circle Gallery from March 29 to April 28, 2018. JUROR’S STATEMENT "Having studied and been inspired by prints and drawings for most of my museum career of more than twenty-five years, I was delighted to be invited to jury the MFA’s 41 st annual Art on Paper exhibition. I have always believed that exceptional insights into an artist’s creative practice are revealed in the immediacy and freshness of art made on and with paper. As the more than 700 works submitted for consideration demonstrate, artists engage with paper in varied and dynamic ways, manipulating drawing media from graphite to watercolor, employing printmaking techniques from etching to woodcut, working in large and small scale, and in both two and three dimensions, to mark, cast, cut, mold, fold, press, stitch, and collage with paper. My intent was to craft an exhibition that celebrates the variety and diversity of artistic expression that characterizes art on paper. Narrowing the selection to 73 works, representing just 10% of the submissions, was indeed a challenge, but my goal was to bring together works in multiple genres, from abstract to figurative, that reflect a clear artistic response to the expressive possibilities of mark-making on paper and the tactile qualities it offers. I want to thank the MFA circle gallery for giving me this opportunity. I hope the exhibition surprises, motivates, and inspires all who visit to share in my enduring enthusiasm for art on paper."
