JANUARY 2009 7 FOCUS ON POWDER COATINGS new technology developed by DSM that minimizes the environmental effects of the total coating process by reducing or entirely eliminating pre-treatment steps. Uralac has good intercoat adhesive properties and over bake resistance as well as superior UV resistance. The material is specifically developed to prevent corrosion in steel. It can be used in both thin flat steel markets, such as metal furniture and automotive parts, as well as in heavy steel applications, including ACE and construction beams. The product was developed using an improved silica encapsulation process. Results of several accelerated and long-term/natural weatherability tests comparing the new product with different coatings showed that Nubicoat HWR is more superior than conventional Ultramarine Blues, comparable and even better than Phthalocyanine Blues and very near the quality of Cobalt Blues. The material has a range of applications, including in facade and interior decorative paints; powder, coil and plastics coatings as well as in tinting systems for architectural and industrial coatings. Offering the same optical properties as the firm’s Tioxide range, the new range comes in an easy-flow form. Deltio 81X pigment is the first easy-flow form product rolled out for the industrial coatings market. An easy-flow form offers various benefits including a 20% faster transfer rate when used in a pneumatic system, and a 15% increase in line output when used for powder coatings. Meanwhile, the company also launched at Eurocoat Tioxide TR88, a new versatile rutile titanium dioxide pigment. Arkema developed the minicoat process in the 1970s and designed a special range of Rilsan Minicoat powders for this highly efficient powder coating process. Since the 1980s, Rilsan Minicoat White 1452 MAC nylon powder, also simply known as 1452, has been the industrial standard for nylon coating powders used in the minicoat process, especially for the coating of brassiere and undergarment adjusters. Over the years, Arkema has invested in research, development, manufacturing and supply chain management in order to fulfil the needs of its customers. Rilsan Techline brings various benefits throughout the manufacturing process of nylon-coated adjusters, thus enabling a significant cost reduction. There is further background discussion.
