I am having a good deal of fun here reading all the articles and reports of the summer’s events. (Sorry, I didn’t mean to use the word “summer.” Monsoon, per-
haps.)
I enjoyed the Convention Week, but hands-up those who needed a week after-wards to recuperate! My word, there was a lot going on. I wish I could have at-tended everything, but even though I was part of the organising committee I couldn’t quite manage it, so the reports that are coming in are filling the gaps nicely. I will share them between the Magazine and the commemorative book ‘Fell Diamonds: A celebration of 90 years of the Fell Pony Society.’ You will get tasters of the week here and the full reports will be in the book, so look for it at
the Spring AGM 2013.
In the meantime there is the ‘Fell Diamonds’ writing competition to get your teeth into. Full rules and entry details are on the FPS web site and in the Maga-zine section on the Convention Week. Please note the deadline—30th November—and do advertise the fact to friends that we are giving quite worthwhile prize money and entry is open to all. Entry is cheaper for FPS members and free to FPS
juniors. (Hint—juniors who enter are quite likely to get a prize, at the moment!)
I hope to see you at the Autumn meeting. The deadline for the Spring Magazine
2013 is, as always, 1st February.
Best wishes Sue Millard

Letters to the Editor
Hi, I just wanted to share with you and the Society our wonderful news. I qualified my Fell pony Townend Revel (Castlehill Bellman x Townend Truffle II) for the Horse of the Year Show ridden, at Lincolnshire Show. Absolutely overjoyed especially as this is my first ever HOYS ticket. We bought Revel from Bev Hodgson (Inglegarth) as a yearling after she had bought him from the Townend Stud to keep one of her youngsters company. He is now rising 7 and a real sweety doing showing with myself and general hacking/playing with my Mum, he really looks after her! We have just started jumping and hunting this year too. Both myself and my Mum were over the moon at winning at Lincolnshire Show and are really
looking forward to going to HOYS for the first time.
Thanks
Cher Cartwright

Under the banner of More than Gold, a charity set up in 2009 to support Churches alongside the 2012 Olympics. The team representing Germany, Aus-tralia, America, South Korea, Northern Ireland and New Zealand began a week of activities in the Eden Valley by watching the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics at Kirkoswald Methodist Church. The aim of the project is to support Churches, in line with the na-tional vision of being like scaffolding—a
temporary support for a permanent structure. At Gamblesby Lownthwaite Finger-print, “Peanuts”, stole the show as she starred in the role of John Wesley’s mount
which he rode through the village, stopping at Hill Top Farm to deliver a sermon.
Alison Morton
My daughter, Megan, was a member of the Society until a few years ago with her pony Heltondale Bracken VII, a.k.a. Cracker, and we came up to the annual show in Penrith a number of times. He is still with us and goes to RDA every week and is borrowed by friends on a regular basis. Megan was married last Saturday and Cracker took her to the Church and brought her back to the house with her
husband.
Best wishes to the Society.

Deputy President’s Report
I have been privileged to be the Society’s President for two years, and now have had the extra pleasure of being asked to continue as Deputy President for this year during the Presidency of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. We are all of us so grateful to have His Royal Highness as our President during this very special year— a Special year, not only for the Fell Pony Society, celebrating its 90th year, but also for our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, celebrating her Diamond Jubilee. We have congratulated her on her outstanding achievement, and thank her and husband for their continued support of The Fell
Pony.
I am sure His Royal Highness will not mind if I say we are both gentlemen of senior years, who have had health problems this year which have prevented us
from attending events we would have liked to attend.
With a purchase of my new ‘pony’ Linnel Speedy (for those who have not met him - he has four wheels and electric power - wonderful action, but sadly lacks feather!) I have managed to get about to a number of events up and down the
country, and enjoyed talking and chatting to
many members.
The Convention Week was a great success, drawing people from near and far, to enjoy and talk about our wonderful ponies. Even during these financially hard times
your enthusiasm lasts.
Well done to all of you.

Chairman’s Report
I understand this has been the wettest summer for 100 years, which has made life difficult for most of us who live in the countryside—so many shows and events cancelled—which is why we decided to play safe and move the Breed Show to
Streatlam Farm at Barnard Castle, which also guaranteed a lovely fine day!
Our Breed Show was the start of a fabulous celebration week, not only for the Jubilee, the Olympics and our 90th Anniversary, but above all for our lovely Fell ponies. We are so grateful to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh for his help and support and we send our very best wishes for his continued good health. The week was very ably organised by Eileen Walker and her team and out hearty thanks go to everyone who worked so hard throughout the week to make all the events such a
success.
Our ponies have done well again this summer. Congratulations to Anna Meadows who with Aylestone The Merrie Monk made the British Pony Club Team (see People and Ponies), and also to Katy Downing’s Waverhead Ted who did a brilliant display at the NPS Supreme Dressage Championships ridden by Sarah Long. They ended up Reserve Overall
Champions.
We send our best wishes to all those who are trotting off to HOYS and
Olympia this autumn.
Our next excitement is our Autumn Sale of registered Fell ponies on October 27th. We have changed to a Saturday just to make sure everyone can come, so if you haven’t been before you now have a golden opportunity. The Sale will be at the new Kendal Mart (M6, junction 36) – it is being built especially for us! So do come. The following day, Sunday, we will hold a shortened version of our Autumn meeting, followed by lunch and an interesting and informative
talk. See you all there.
Best Wishes
Mary

As usual, I start this report by reading what I wrote last year, and here I am
again, writing it two days before Sue’s deadline.
We’re back to ‘normal’ in the office after a hectic Anniversary Convention week and I have made a mental note to never, ever agree to holding a barbecue for seventy people here again. It was a very busy day, but I think people enjoyed themselves and the sun shone. We had a surprising number of comments as to how tidy the office was, which made all the hectic filing and cleaning in the pre-vious days worthwhile – we’ll make an effort to keep up to it in future. The whole week, starting with the Breed Show, seemed to go very smoothly and many people have said that they thought the decision to relocate the show to avoid cancellation was a good one. I managed to fit a couple of stud visits in and
around work, and enjoyed my visits to Greenholme and Rackwood very much.
Last year we were in limbo about Defra’s intentions for Passport Issuing Organi-sations and the future of the National Equine Database. We were notified re-cently that Defra have decided not to award a contract for the continuation of NED beyond the end of September, so the NED website will cease then. Defra have informed us that they ‘intend to work with PIOs to ensure that horse pass-port data continues to be collected and stored appropriately and in a manner that will support the provision of data to authorised enforcement bodies’. They have indicated that this will give them ‘an opportunity to review the efficiency criteria under which all PIOs must operate. This will include amongst other elements a review of passport quality and robustness to ensure that all UK passports offer suitable safeguards against tampering to a common and uniform standard’. We have had in the office an instance of a passport returned from an abattoir that had had the microchip information erased. The passport had been reported miss-ing after the pony had gone through a sale and the auction mart had paid for a duplicate passport after the pony’s chip had been checked. The passport re-turned to the office by the abattoir was the original passport but it’s anybody’s guess as to what the slaughtered pony was. Native Ponies GB had a very produc-tive meeting with Defra in July, mainly about issues in Europe with passports and Daughter Societies, and it was good to meet two of the people on the Horse Pass-
ports team and to find them helpful and informative.
I’m currently liaising with Adam Day from North West Auctions on plans for our Fell Pony Sale – the new auction mart at Kendal isn’t completely finished yet, but I’m assured it will be by the date of our Sale. I’m hoping to fit in two weeks holi-day at the end of September, returning in time to send out this magazine and
prepare the Sale catalogue.

THE FELL PONY SOCIETY
12
Held at Orton Market Hall on Saturday 24 March 2012
Miss Longsdon opened the meeting and told members of the friends that the Society had lost over the last twelve months: Mrs Joyce Capstick, mother of Tho-mas, and a supporter of the Society for many years; Arthur Earnshaw, a Society judge and a member for many years; Mickey Flynn, who helped the Duke of Edin-burgh with his team of Fell ponies; Mr Ted Hore, husband of Stella Hore and a member for many years; Judith Slattery, a former Secretary of the Society; Eliza-beth Thompson, a keen member in Northern Ireland; Liz Ball, Chairman of the Society for a good many years, and only last week, Mary Dodd, a former Council member and member of the Show Committee, who worked very hard for the Soci-
ety over the years. She asked members to stand in remembrance of them.
1 Apologies for absence
Apologies were received from: Mrs F and Miss L Awde, Mrs S Barbour, Miss B Bell, Mrs S Camp, Miss A Carslaw, Miss J Charlton, Miss L Charlton, Mrs G Cockbain, Mrs W Dickinson, Mr & Mrs A Douglas, Mrs M Enser, Ms J Fairburn, Miss J Glass, Mr M Goddard, Mr C Grant, Mrs J A Hill, Mrs E Jones. Miss C King, Mr T Lloyd, Mr W Lloyd, Miss D Meikle, Mr A W Morland, Mrs C A Morland, Miss A and Mr G H Morton, Miss S Pringle, Mr J M Rawlinson, Mr W Robinson, Mrs C Ross-Thomson, Mrs J
Ward, Mr D Wilkinson, Miss M Wilkinson and Mrs V Wood-Gee.
Approval and adoption of Autumn General Meeting Minutes of 22 October 2011
Acceptance of the minutes was proposed by Mrs S Brunskill, seconded by Mrs S
Charlton, and agreed by the members.
3 Matters arising from the minutes of the Autumn General Meeting held on 22 October 2011
There were no matters arising.
4 Chairman’s Report
Miss Longsdon welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked them for attend-ing, especially our ex-President, Mr Bob Charlton, who had agreed to act as dep-uty President for the coming year. She thanked Mr Charlton for his work over the last two years – he had attended everything and been so nice to everyone as well as being a great support to Miss Longsdon as Chairman. We were extremely hon-oured that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh had agreed to be our President for the coming year – HRH has a great enthusiasm for the breed. HRH would be having a busy year owing to HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, so the Society probably wouldn’t see much of him but his support was there. Mr Charlton, our retiring President had agreed to act as his deputy for the year. This was the Society’s
MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE FELL PONY SOCIETY
13
90th Anniversary Year – the FPS being formed in October 1922. Mrs Walker would
have lots to say presently about our plans for the Anniversary Convention.
The Society proposed to hold the Autumn General Meeting at Tebay Social Club, as Orton Market Hall was not available on Sundays. It would be a very short for-mal meeting, followed by lunch and a speaker. Another change this year was that the Society’s Annual Sale of Fell ponies would be held at the new Auction Mart being built near Kendal, just off Junction 36 of the M6, so excellent access. This would be a new start and a splendid chance to upgrade our Sale: she hoped that vendors would try to ensure that their ponies were well-handled and well-presented in the hope that this might help to improve prices. It was also an op-
portunity to hold our Sale on a Saturday, which had not been possible at Penrith,
Miss Longsdon then thanked Mrs Millard for another excellent magazine and for looking after our website, and also thanked Barbara Dunne, who was not present, for co-ordinating the production of the 2013 calendar, which was now available for purchase and looked very good. Miss Longsdon thanked Claire Simpson for doing such a good job on our publicity, keeping our Facebook page up-to-date, and submitting articles and photographs to magazines. Claire appealed to mem-bers for more information to include in articles, especially anything showcasing
the versatility of the breed.
Miss Longsdon told members that the Dressage Championships at Addington in April included three Fell pony teams, and that Anastasia Meadows and her Fell pony, Aylestone The Merrie Monk, had been selected for the England Pony Club
Games Team – a splendid achievement.
Miss Longsdon had forgotten to bring her sponsor board for the Southern Show, so would members please see her after the meeting if they would like to sponsor a class. Mrs Morton enquired whether the Southern Show was a Breed Show and were the ponies measured. Miss Longsdon said that it was a Breed Show but that the ponies had not been measured in previous years. Mrs Morton thought that as the Olympia qualifier was being held there, the ponies for that class at least,
should be measured. Miss Longsdon agreed to look into it.
Miss Longsdon then spoke to members about the tremendous amount Mrs Ailie Newall had done for the Society over the years. She had been a very competent judge, had bred ponies which had travelled all over the country being a huge ad-vertisement for the breed, had run the Judges Committee, been on Council for many years and served a term as our President. Consequently she asked Mr Charl-ton to present Mrs Newall with the Society’s Queen Elizabeth trophy in recogni-tion of this. Mr Charlton reminded members that Mrs Newall was the same age as HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and she was a great family friend of the Charltons. She and her late husband had done more for the Society than anyone living; the Society was very grateful for all she had done, she was a very wise person, and it was entirely suitable that her name should join those eminent names already on the trophy. Miss Longsdon told members that Council had thought it would be appropriate to make Mrs Newall an Honorary member. This needed the support
14
of members – Mrs Charlton proposed the suggestion, Mr Kelly seconded and mem-bers agreed that this should be done. Mrs Newall thanked everyone for the tro-
phy and for her election as an Honorary Member of the Society.
Miss Longsdon then reminded members of the Eileen Davis Trophy for Endurance Riding – this was to be presented to Vyv Wood-Gee, who unfortunately was unable to be present. She had sent a message via Mrs Murray to thank everyone and to
say that she felt very honoured to be chosen.
Miss Longsdon thanked the people who were serving the teas – the catering had been done by Katy Edgar Catering and there would be a charge of £3.50 per per-
son. She thanked everyone present for their help and support for the Society.
5 Result of Postal Voting for Council
Miss Longsdon told members that there had been one retirement from Council and only one nomination, so there had been no need for a vote. Betty Walker had decided to retire from Council after many years, during which she had many dif-ferent jobs for the Society. Miss Longsdon hoped that we would still see her at events, and thanked her very much for her work over the years. She then wel-comed Sue Brunskill back onto Council. Miss Longsdon said she had been slightly concerned that no-one else had come forward to stand for Council – she didn’t know if that was because Council were doing such a good job or because they were such a bunch of losers, no-one wanted to join them. On a more serious note, the Society did need new people to carry on into the future and asked members
to consider if for next year if they thought they could contribute.
Miss Longsdon thanked Mrs Robinson for her work as Vice-Chairman, and re-minded members how lucky they were to have such an excellent Council. Council had thought it might be a good idea to try and involve the Area groups more and proposed to invite a representative from each group to one of the autumn Council meetings, so that they could see how things work and to widen all our horizons.
Miss Hilary Fell thanked Council for doing a good job for the Society.
6 Adoption of Accounts for year ended 31 October 2011
Mrs Parkin told members that last year the Society had made a small loss of just over £2,000. There had been a reduction in income for the second consecutive year, this time of almost £8,000 compared with the previous year. Subscriptions were down by £1,000 and Registrations by £500, but the biggest fall was in Mer-chandise sales which were almost £5,000 less than the previous year. Income from shows was down by over £2,000 as there was no South Cumbria Show and the Breed Show was cancelled – this had also affected merchandise sales. The only increases in income were in Transfers and the Pony Sales list. All of this was probably due to the current recession, branded merchandise being relatively ex-
pensive, people breeding fewer ponies and more ponies being sold.
Total Expenditure reduced by £4,000 compared with the previous year. Show expenses were down, but not by much as expenditure had been incurred for the Breed Show prior to its cancellation. Office expenses were lower and salary ex-
15
penses slightly, as Mrs Wilkinson had done fewer extra hours in the year. Insur-ance costs reduced slightly as Mrs Parkin had been able to arrange for two poli-
cies to be combined at a lower premium.
FIS testing had impacted on the accounts for the first time: Council agreed to fund testing for newly licensed stallions and affected foals, and to absorb the VAT increase. This didn’t affect the previous year’s accounts as we had secured a one-off grant from the RBST to cover it, so this year there was a charge of just over £2,000. Overall the Society had made a loss of just over £2,000. Our re-serves policy as a Charity was to hold 75% of fund expenditure. Last year our re-serves stood at 94%; despite the loss in this year, because of the reduction in ex-
penditure, they now stood at 96%.
There were no questions from members. Adoption of the accounts was proposed
by Mrs Mallinson, seconded by Miss White and agreed by members.
7 Resolution to appoint Langdales Accountants Ltd as Accountants to the Society
The resolution was proposed by Mrs Morton, seconded by Miss Walker and agreed
by the members.
8 Secretary/Treasurer’s Report
Mrs Parkin told members that the latest updates from Defra told us that they had been unable to come up with a feasible way of improving the ‘efficiency and effectiveness of the current system’ – their words. Ministers had therefore agreed to initiate a procurement process for a new central database contract. The tender had subsequently been published and the closing date for bidders to respond is 20th April, after which Defra would assess all bids and conduct a cost-benefit analysis. A decision whether to award a contract would not be taken be-
fore these analyses had been completed.
The FIS test was now available from the Van Haeringen lab in The Netherlands and would soon also be available from the lab at Texas University. The Dutch Fell Pony Society Secretary had told Mrs Parkin that the Van Haeringen lab did not offer a ‘fast-track’ service for sick foals, so it was likely that their members would still use the AHT for some tests. Additionally, Mrs Parkin had been con-tacted last month by Dr June Swinburne who was part of the team who developed the test. She and Laura Fox-Clipsham were no longer working for the AHT as there were no funds available for research. Dr Swinburne was in the process of establishing a new business to perform animal DNA diagnostic testing and hoped to be up and running by mid-June. She would be providing dog and horse genetic diagnostics and DNA profiling, and had offered to provide diagnostic testing for FIS and/or DNA profiling for our Society at rates slightly lower than those we cur-rently pay the AHT. She would also be able to provide the fast-track test for sick foals. Still on the subject of FIS testing, Council had agreed at the last meeting that where colts had been FIS tested and subsequently licensed, the refund for
the FIS test would only be paid where the colt was in the same ownership.
16
Mrs Morton asked for clarification about what would happen to the information held by the AHT if the Society moved to a new provider. Mrs Parkin explained that there was already a system of exchange of information between laboratories
doing DNA profiling.
There had been a good start to the new year in the office, last year’s registra-tions having been completed by mid-February, which meant that the 2011 Stud Book was printed and available for purchase at the meeting. There had been a further fall in the number of registrations, 422 in 2011, compared to 478 in 2010 and 547 in 2009 and taking the Society back to the level of 2005. The 2013 calen-dar was also available and a new Christmas card. Schedules and entry forms for the Stallion Show and the Breed Show could be downloaded from the website and there were paper copies available at the meeting. Also available, following re-quests from members at previous meetings, were the Council minutes for the pre-vious twelve months. Mrs Parkin asked members please not to remove anything
from the file.
On the financial side, the Society had received its grant from the Horserace Bet-ting Levy Board, and was very grateful to receive the same level of grant as last year. The bank accounts are reasonably healthy, with the Trust Fund at just un-
der £9,800, the Deposit Account at £48,000 and £3,000 in the current account.
Finally, Mrs Parkin thanked Katherine for her hard work in the office, and Mary
and the Council for their help and support.
Miss Longsdon said the Society was extremely grateful to Elizabeth & Katherine for running such an efficient office; there was a very fast turn round of paperwork – way ahead of some other Societies. Miss Longsdon then thoroughly embarrassed Mrs Parkin by telling members that it was her birthday on the following day, pre-senting her with a bowl of miniature daffodils and encouraging members to sing
‘Happy Birthday’.
9 Reports from Sub-Committees
Mrs Robinson had nothing to report from the Conservation Sub-Committee.
There was no-one present from the Judges Sub-Committee.
Mrs Millard, Overseas Sub-Committee, reported that invitations to the Anniver-sary Convention were being sent to the overseas branches, and separately, re-minders that they should submit their reports and accounts prior to being as-sessed for certification for another year. There had been contact from the Ger-man FN, the organisation which oversees and co-ordinates the German Stud Book organisations and it was hoped that this might initiate consultation and progress
towards recognising how Fell ponies should be registered.
Miss Longsdon informed members that Henk Marsmann, who had been Chairman of the Dutch Fell Pony Society for over ten years, had now retired, and that Joke Postma had taken over from him. Relations between our two Societies had greatly
improved while he was Chairman and she hoped this would continue.
17
Mrs Murray, Show Sub-Committee, hoped that we would have a successful Breed Show this year. We had secured the HOYS qualifier in addition to NCPA qualifiers and three new Equifest qualifiers. Paul Metcalfe had been unsuccessful in obtain-ing a venue for a South Cumbria Show for 2012, but had secured a date for 2013. The bursary initiated last year was available again in 2012 – details in the Breed Show schedule. As always, helpers were needed for the Breed Show, particularly in setting up the rings. If anyone knew of an Equine Photographer in the Cumbria
area, please would they let her know.
Mrs Charlton said that schedules for the Performance Trials would be available
by the Stallion Show.
Mrs Walker spoke about plans for the Anniversary Convention – she hoped that by now members had the dates embedded in their brains and were booking their holidays and getting their ponies fit to come and join in. When everything was finalised there would be a separate page on the website giving all the details. Activities were planned for every day during the week and on four evenings. A list of pony accommodation would be available on request. The organising com-mittee planned to produce a book afterwards, recording the events of the week. Mrs Walker also wanted to record all breeding stock in 2012 – she thought this would be an historic document that could be used as a benchmark in years to come, to monitor how things were changing. All ponies that competed in the Stallion Show, the events of the Convention week and all Fells competing in the Performance Trials would receive a commemorative rosette, and a commemora-tive china mug would be available for purchase. There would be a writing compe-tition with sections for poetry and prose, split between under 18s and adults, with a general title of ‘Fell Diamonds’. Winning entries would be published in the
book.
Miss Longsdon thanked Mrs Walker and her committee and told members it was a week not to miss - they needed to be there and should tell everyone else. Booking would be necessary for some of the events were numbers had to be lim-
ited or catering planned.
10 Any Other Business
Hilary Fell told members that the Packs & Tracks event organised by Cumbria Bridleways Society and usually held at Dalemain would this year be part of the Countryfest event at the Westmorland showground taking place over two days – 26 to 27 May. She hoped that Fells would be represented there – it would be a
bigger audience and very good publicity for the ponies.
Christine Morton asked if anyone had identified any more of the individuals on the photo on the front of the recent magazine – she said it had been taken at the
Crown Hotel, Penrith, now demolished.
Miss Chadwick asked if the Breed Show should have to be cancelled again be-cause of bad weather, would Council consider changing the date. Miss Longsdon asked if the Show Committee had looked into a backup location – nothing had
been identified.
18
Mr Brunskill said that he had raised the issue of a list of FIS clear stallions at the last AGM and no progress had been made. Miss Longsdon pointed out that stal-lions could be advertised free of charge on the Society’s website and that a list of stallions had been printed in the catalogue for last year’s Stallion Show. Owners
of clear stallions were not necessarily willing to accept visiting mares.
Mrs Thorpe asked about stamping passports to show that ponies had been FIS tested. Mrs Parkin said this had just been discussed again at Council and she
would be looking into setting up a voluntary system.
Miss White asked if any progress had been made with Natural England and the fencing-off of watercourses. Miss Longsdon said that David Martin of Natural Eng-land had attended a Council meeting and there had been a useful exchange of
information.
Mrs Newall suggested that the Society send our congratulations to HM The
Queen for her Diamond Jubilee and Miss Longsdon agreed to do this.
Mrs Robinson and Mrs Murray then presented the awards for the 2011 Perform-ance Points. Miss Longsdon congratulated the winners and then closed the meet-
ing and invited the members to have tea.

Luck was with us, as after lots of rain the show had dry weather even if it didn’t feel much like May. Entries were up on last year with 10 in the In Hand mares class. Again there were more in the In Hand classes than the Ridden classes. Dis-appointing was that having decided to add 2 Working Hunter classes to the show I
received 1 entry so had to cancel the classes.
However I did some research on the day & it seems Dressage would be more
popular for next year.
Thanks go to our judge Mrs Jane Upton and the many helpers Georgina & Janet Blair, Nicky & Georgia Purton, Katharine Webb, Linda Skakich & not forgetting my
OH Steve who gave up their Sunday to make the show go well.
The date for next year’s show is Sunday 5th May 2013 so please put the date in
your diaries and details will be on the website in the New Year.

The weather was kind to the Cumbria Fell & Dales show and organisers Ellen Jones and Hilary Fawcett were very pleased with the entries in most
classes.
The supreme Fell championship was judged by Deborah Chadwick and Glenis Cockbain, who chose Towford Harmarnie a four year old mare, sired by Carrock I'm Yer Man and shown by Alan Anderson. Reserve supreme went to Alex Robinson, with Severnvale Grey Bobby, who took the r idden
championship ahead of Lunesdale
Aurora, ridden by her mother, Julie.
Courtney Savage, Plumpton, took the ridden reserve championship with Murthwaite Sako 308 owned by
Thomas Capstick.

A festive air prevailed over Sandringham as the Midlands East Support Group celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 90th anniversary of The Fell Pony Society with a bumper entry at their show on 19th May 2012. The show is held on the beautiful Sandringham Estate by kind permission of HM The Queen. To acknowledge Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee we had a picture display
representing her interest in our native breeds.
The Fells were joined this year by the Dales Pony Society and the Highland Pony Enthusiasts Club, along with friends of all breeds. There was a large entry of
registered Fell youngstock with at least two colts entering their first show.
In the lunch break Mr Marcus O’Lone, the Queen’s agent at Sandringham, made a speech on behalf of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh—the Society’s President—and cut a cake to celebrate the Society’s 90th anniversary. Mrs O’Lone was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Mr O’Lone has supported our show on the Queen’s behalf and supplied us with a wonderful venue and facilities over the last 10
years, for which we are very grateful.

We were also honoured with the presence of Miss Mary Longsdon MBE, the FPS chairman. She must have noticed quite a few developments since her previous
visit to one of our first shows.
The afternoon ridden classes were also well filled, and included a traditional
walk and trot class and child handler class.
The Supreme Champion was Sunnybrowe Jack, a well-deserved win for this superb stallion who showed none of his 20 years. Reserve Supreme was Lorna
Brooks’ Shirdleyhill Tara.
The Fell judge was Jane Paterson and our thanks go to her for all her hard work. The Fell ponies were also represented on other parts of the showground in the
novice working hunter pony and the open working hunter pony classes.
The Midlands East Support Group would like to thank everyone who helped in organising, running and sponsoring this show. We all had an excellent day and are
looking forward to seeing you all again next year.

Fells at the Native Pony Show at Berkshire College of Agriculture
The Midlands East Support Group of the Fell Pony Society joined forces with the Chiltern and Thames Valley Connemaras and the Highland Pony Enthusiasts Club to hold a Native Pony Show for the three breeds at Berkshire College of Agriculture on 24 June 2012, writes Georgina Blair. Despite heavy rain overnight the ground on the show field was very good and there was ample room for vehicles to park on hard standing, so nobody got stuck. This is the third year there have been Fell classes at this show, which was originally the local Connemara group’s summer show, and numbers of Fells
forward has been growing each year.
Judge Mrs Pat Campbell from Kent had a good selection of ponies to choose from. Her in-hand champion was George Guy’s broodmare Severnvale Gypsy Rose, with Wendi Davies’ gelding Ffrethi Commodore in reserve. Sue Petritz’s homebred yearling Richmond Cosmos was the highest placed pony from the South East Support Group area and qualified for the final for the Bewcastle Boy Blue Trophy, an inter area championship which is held at the Southern Show in
September.
The ridden classes began just as an ominous grey cloud drifted overhead and there was a brief but very wet downpour during the traditional ridden mares. When the rain started the ponies in the line up all swivelled as one to get their backs to the wind.
Fell ponies are no strangers to bad weather, and know exactly what to do in it! Ludworth Donna, owned and ridden by Sam Bloomfield took the class, and went on to win the ridden veterans too. The traditional ridden geldings and stallions was won by the stallion Waverhead Copper, ridden by Laura Barsoum, with the grey Greenholme Yabadabadoo, ridden by Holly Mayling, taking second. These positions were repeated in the open ridden class, and in the ridden championship itself. Holly has only had her pony, known as Bill at home, since the autumn, but has already forged a very strong partnership with him. They are showing great promise in working hunter pony classes, and were second in the Fell WHP class at this show. Debbie Boylan-White and Raydale
Blackberry won the WHP.
The supreme championship went to Severnvale Gypsy Rose, after a storming trot round the arena with handler Leanne Russell. Waverhead Copper took reserve supreme. Fells were also active in the dressage arena, with Tamsin Hughes’ stallion Banksgate Tamlin ridden by Karl Standing best Fell in the prelim test. Alison Favell’s Lunesdale Knight Music, who had travelled all the way from Suffolk, won the MESG Pe r fo rmance Pony championship for ponies taking part in
both dressage and WHP.
From the show organiser’s point of view the greatest success was that the tent stayed upright throughout the day. Strong winds wrecked a gazebo on the Fell stand at the Suffolk show a
