There is only 12 weeks till Christmas! This year seems to be flying by. We are now into spring, so hopefully we will be having some warmer weather. Warmer days are good for roading works. We have included in this newsletter some tips on TLC, what you can do to take care of the new smooth roads once we have repaired them. There is still a lot of work happening in New Brighton and we’re making visible progress. Reconstruction of the Keyes Road roundabout is complete, read more about the work involved on pages 5-6. Ever wondered what areas are below or above sea level? See page 7-8 for some interesting facts about what is happening underground.

Progress so far, what has been completed:
Bridge Reserve storm water pump stationAs part of our work in South New Brighton a new storm water pump station is being built on Bridge Reserve near the end of Blake Street. The pump station will have two pumps that will be attached to a pond. These pumps will turn on when the water in the pond reaches a certain level, for example in a heavy rain event.
Storm water retention pond, construction will begin on the pond later this year.
1. Sheet piles were installed.
2. The dirt inside the sheet piles was removed. This created a safe working area.
3. We poured the concrete foundation, base and walls for the pump station.

What we are working on next: • The pipes from the pump station are being connected into the outfall pipes.• The electrical house will be built. • We will let you know before works begin on the pond.

Good progress is being made on Bridge Street Bridge. All eight piles have been inserted.We have just finished pouring the concrete in all four piles on the west side. In total 143m3 of concrete was poured.

A hydraulic clam shell on the end of the crane is being used to dig out the dirt inside the steel casings.
Steel casings, hollow steel tubes, for the new piles were driven 42 metres into the ground.
Steel reinforcing will go inside the casing and then concrete will poured down the inside.
How much dirt needs to be removed from the inside of the steel casings? Approximately 500 clam shell loads for each pile- there are eight piles.

Reconstruction of Keyes Road roundabout
Work on the Keyes Road roundabout is complete. Reconstruction of the roundabout started in late August and took just under three weeks, opening one week ahead of schedule! Various services are located under the Keyes Road roundabout which meant we had to dig up the roundabout to repair or replace the earthquake damaged services. To reconstruct the roundabout, the work was completed in stages.
Remove the existing asphalt
We removed the asphalt using a pavement planner that essentially mills off the existing asphalt surface. Pavement milling is the process of removing the surface of a paved area such as a road, bridge, or parking lot. Milling removes anywhere from just deep enough that it will level and smooth out the surface to a full depth removal.
Top up to the new road level with MPA40
The existing surface now sits lower than the new asphalt level that is to be constructed. We are going to construct the roundabout by using base-course aggregate to top up the roundabout up to its new shape. This was done with trucks importing fill and dumping.
Cement stabilise the roundabout and shape
Once the pavement level was topped up to the finished level, minus the asphalt, we cement stabilised the whole roundabout. This creates a stronger and more durable pavement. This had to sit for a couple of days to gain strength before any other work could be undertaken.

Lift the service lids to new design heights
Once the pavement stabilisation was complete, we then lifted all the service lids to match the new design levels. This took a couple of days as we had to pour new concrete around the lids before we can back fill.
Chipseal
Chip seal the roundabout pavement to form a membrane seal. This seal is the base course. We chipseal prior to asphalting to create a water proof seal over the base-course. This is done as the most damaging thing to pavements is surface water. Asphalt is also not waterproof. Hence the reason for the chip seal.
Pour kerbs to form the islands and roundabout
The kerbs for the island and the roundabout will be poured insitu using a slip form machine. There are two kerbs for the roundabout itself to be poured and then six islands for the approaches. Once they are poured, they will need to dry for two days before the new kerbs are strong enough for asphalt to be poured against them.

work! It has been a long road to reconstruction.
Pave the asphalt
Once the kerbs had gained sufficient strength, we paved the roundabout. This was completed over two days, with eight trucks importing the asphalt from our Fulton Hogan plant on Miners Road. The paving was completed using a Vogel paver and paving crew controlled the height and thickness of the asphalt and compaction.
After completing the paving, the final stage was to line mark the roundabout prior to opening it back up to traffic. There are still minor works to be done like concrete infill’s in the islands, asphalt grooving on approaches, signs and landscaping.

Did you know? Some facts about the stuff below the surface...• That Christchurch has one of the best water supplies in the world. The supply comes from groundwater, is of extremely high quality, and requires no treatment.• The groundwater system that provides this water is dominated in the west by gravels and sands deposited by the Waimakariri River. Beneath Christchurch, and to the east, is a succession of alternating gravel and marine deposits. • During postglacial times with rising sea level and coastline retreat, the riverbed of the Waimakariri River has aggraded and flooded periodically through the area of what is now Christchurch, bringing fresh deposition of gravel, sand and silt.
Water enters the aquifers from the Waimakariri River, rainfall, and irrigation. Water discharges from the system through spring-fed streams (for example the Avon River), undersea discharge in the coastal fringe, and pumping.
How deep?• The unit from the most recent glacial period is known as the Riccarton Gravel, which extends from near surface in the west of the city, to between 15-25 m beneath the CBD and to ~40 m beneath eastern Christchurch at the present shoreline. • In some Christchurch locations the stable Riccarton gravels can be at depths of over 25m.• Near the Bridge Street Bridge the Riccarton gravel level is 25m deep.• In South New Brighton the groundwater depth ranges between 1.2m and 0.4 m below the existing ground surface.• The water table level varies across Christchurch and also varies considerably during the year and from year to year. • Due to the low lying nature of the coastal plain, the water table over the central and eastern parts of the city are typically within 1-1.5 m of the ground surface.
The confined gravel aquifer system ( underground layer of water bearing materials) located between the Ashley River/Rakahuri and the Rakaia River as defined in Environment Canterbury’s Natural Resources Regional Plan (NRRP) describes five principal aquifers:
• 1 Riccarton Gravel • 2 Linwood Gravel • 3 Burwood Gravel • 4 Wainoni Gravel • 5 Unnamed
Aquifer 1 is the shallowest and Aquifer 5 the deepest.

• In some areas of Christchurch the median water table is below sea level: Horseshoe lake, Bexley and small areas in Avondale and South New Brighton. In other areas like Aranui, Wainoni, Bromley and the Te Huingi Manu Wildlife Refuge/Oxidation Ponds the water table is 2m above sea level. Small areas in St Martins, Cashmere and Beckenham have water table levels locally elevated by up to three metres above the river reaching 4m above the sea level.
• If the groundwater level is too low it can cause damage to wooden piles/foundation of the house/ building.

Wainoni Bridge repairsRepairs to the earthquake damaged Wainoni Road Bridge are scheduled to start approximately late October. The repairs will involve a full road reconstruction and kerb and channel repairs. The work will take approximately five weeks to complete and four of those weeks will involve the bridge being closed. There will be a sign posted detour. We will notify residents before we begin this work. During the work take Pages Road or ANZAC Road bridges to reach your destination across the river.

South New Brighton gravity repairs - Pipe lining is the chosen method.
We will be pipe lining public laterals (house wastewater pipe connections) from the main pipe in the road to just inside your private property boundary. We will be carrying out repairs to the wastewater mains and public laterals (house wastewater pipe connections) using pipe lining along streets in the South New Brighton catchment. Pipe lining is a trenchless method used to repair broken pipes. The inside of the damaged pipe is lined with a new material that strengthens the pipe.
Work is expected to begin mid October and will be complete by the end of the year. We will send out an overview notice shortly to inform the affected residents.

Give your street some.....
If you receive notice that you are getting repairs to your footpath, driveway or road surface a little bit of TLC will be required.
Keep it clean (and oil free)Products like petrol, oil, kerosene and turpentine will damage new seal. To clean up a spill: soak up any excess with a dry cloth and then cover the area with a dry absorbant material like dry soil, sand or sawdust. Leave for several minutes then clean off, repeat, then rinse with clean water.
Easy does itWhen the surface is new it is more likely to become damaged. Please do not make hard turns on the new surface and avoid turning your steering wheel when the car is not moving.
Keep it movingPlease try not to park vehicles and trailers in the same spot for long periods of time on new seal. This can cause dents in the road surface.

Pump station 136 is now operational. The pump station is taking in flow from the main wastewater pipes with only the local wastewater still being pumped through the existing pump station across the road. This old pump station will be taken out of use about four months after the new pump station is commissioned. The pump station houses four pumps, two in each wet well chamber. Each of these pumps is about 180kw; this is about the same power as four V8 commodore engines in each pump. This gives each pump the capacity to pump about 940 litres of wastewater per second!The grey area of the building houses all of the mechanical parts of the pump station, while the brown area is the electrical area or the ‘brains’ of the building.
The pump station has an on-site generator which can run for 72hours if there is a power cut. The generator house has acoustic dampening to silence the noise of the generator, it was designed by an acoustic engineer. The building is fireproof, it has a special link installed that if burnt out will stop the flow of fuel to the generator, isolating the fire to within the fireproof walls. The generator sits on special bearings, which enables it to withstand possible future earthquakes.

The generator
The vaccum station and biofiltersFulton Hogan is close to completing the vacuum station building and installing the poly carbonate windows. Once the building is complete City Care will install the mechanical and electrical components of the vacuum station (the insides). There are two biofilters in the area around the pump station, these help to mitigate the risk of odour. There are fans in the pump station that suck the odorous air to the biofilter. The air passes through the bark which naturally removes the odour.
Fulton Hogan has completed a ‘smoke test’. This ensures that the odorous air is being distributed evenly. The chambers in the pump station were filled up with smoke, the smoke then rises from the biofilters. If there are any blockages this shows up in the distribution of the smoke.
