Executive Summary European Gutters are the New Zealand and Australian Distributors of Lindab Rainwater Systems. Lindab Gutters have been made in Sweden since 1956 and offer homeowners and property managers the highest quality solutions when it comes to superior drainage capacity, extreme weather performance, overflow functionality, self-cleaning gutters and downpipes, safe and cost effective maintenance systems, enhanced durability, range of components, ease of installation, aesthetics and environmental considerations. In addition, unlike New Zealand manufactured gutters, the European Gutters rainwater system fully meets the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code and Resource Management Act. European Gutters sells its products to Builders, Roofers, Plumbers and Homeowners on a nationwide basis from warehouses and depots in Auckland, Hamilton, Hastings, Wellington and Christchurch. European Gutters has undertaken an audit of some Multi Proof Typography’s and has found that the number of downpipes on these properties can be significantly reduced if Lindab’s high capacity 150mm half round gutter is used. The stormwater and downpipe savings on these properties ranges from $900 to $3,000, depending upon the properties design and location.
2
A gutter audit of existing properties has also shown that the high capacity Lindab 150mm gutter addresses the Building Code shortfall in downpipes and the blocked gutter and structural damage overflow issues associated with many of these properties. European Gutters also offer a Lindab 190mm gutter for large residential blocks, schools and light commercial applications.
Multi Proof Downpipe Audit The European Gutters downpipe audit of the following Multi Proof Typography’s is based upon the following assumptions and feedback;
1. The Auckland 10-year ARI rainfall figure of 100 mm/hr (for a 10-minute duration). Miles Construction have stated that they use this figure to determine the gutter and downpipe drainage capacity requirements for a roof area.
2. NZMRM Consultant, Stuart Hayman, has advised that the MRM is in the process of revising Roof Drainage for the CoP and that they had “engaged NIWA to update the rainfall maps and these now show less rainfall than earlier maps.”
3. A Lindab roof drainage capacity of 81m² for a 0-25° pitched roof.
4. E&H Roofing has been advised that the PC sum allowed for drainage works is around $75 to $110 plm. The cost of drainage works can vary considerably and is dependent upon the location of the stormwater connection.
5. The cost of a downpipe on a two storey dwelling is around $40 to $60lnm.

European Gutters Value Proposition The European Gutters value proposition provides an overview of the Lindab Gutter System and highlights the advantages of this system over conventional guttering. Lindab is a Swedish company that started in 1956 and it is today one of the world’s leading gutter manufacturers, they export to over 30 countries and are renown for their quality and innovation.
High capacity 150mm half round Gutter The Lindab Gutter System uses a high-capacity, half-round gutter coupled with an equally high capacity 87mm .60-gauge zinc coated steel downpipe. This allows the water to flow more freely, which helps to eliminate the build-up of debris that can cause regular gutters to become blocked and overflow.
Gutter Product; Capacity vs Stormcloud; Downpipe;
Marley Stormcloud (123mm) 5,100mm² 0% 80mm
Marley Typhoon (133mm) 6,100mm² +20% 80mm
Lindab (150mm) 8,900mm² +75% 87mm
Guttering designed for heavy rain The Lindab gutter is also designed with a 6mm lower front than the back so that excess water flows over the front edge of the gutter and away from the house, rather than back towards the property. This unique system helps prevent damage to external cladding in the event of heavy rainfall or a gutter blockage.
The New Zealand Building Code requires water from guttering to flow away from the property. (E2/AS1 8.1.6(f)) The Lindab Gutters Overflow System ensures that water does not flow into the building in the event of a blockage or heavy rainfall.
Self-Cleaning Downpipe Diverters European Gutters use the In\Out Debris Diverter on all downpipes which enter the stormwater system. Downpipe Diverters help to ensure that downpipes and drains stay free of blockages and stop debris from entering and polluting the storm water system.
The In\Out Debris Diverter also uses a customised sleeve to allow roofs and gutters to be cleaned without polluting the storm water system. This easy-to-use system allows work to be carried out quickly and efficiently, while complying with the Resource Management Act.
16
External Brackets for better flow and easier cleaning External brackets allow debris to flow more freely through the gutters and enable safe and easy cleaning, up to three stories high, to be carried out from ground level using a hose and wand system.
Cleaning gutters regularly is recommended in areas with mature trees and where plant growth is a problem. Cleaning properties from ground level is the only cost-effective maintenance option for the increasing number of multi-storey houses.
Robust zinc-coated steel Gutter & Bracket System The Lindab gutter is made from.60 gauge zinc-coated steel, which provides it with added strength and minimises the damage caused by ladders. The robust bracket system also helps to make sure the gutter stays in place when overloaded by debris, heavy rain fall and blockages.
Easy installation and maintenance Lindab Gutters use a modular clip lock system with EPDM seals and one-piece corners. No rivets or silicone are used during installation. This easy-to-use system allows for leak-free installation and the simple replacement and maintenance of the product once installed.
The steel is coated on both sides by a high-build polyester coating that has been UV tested to New Zealand standards and which provides exceptional durability. The only maintenance required is an occasional wash down.
Environmental & Recycling Considerations There are metal recycling companies throughout New Zealand and metal gutters and downpipes are accepted in any condition.
This contrasts with plastic gutters and downpipes which will only be recycled in Auckland and Christchurch if the products are “presented in a clean condition, free of contaminates, rubbish and non-PVC materials such as earth, vegetation, stones etc.” In practice it is not practical to recycle plastic gutters and downpipes and these products often end up in landfills.
Advantages of wooden fascia European Gutters promotes the use of a wooden fascia with the Lindab Gutter System, as it has over twice the life of metal fascia.
Wooden fascia also requires less maintenance and can easily be repaired and replaced by the metre. Whereas houses with metal fascia often require the replacement of the side of a building or the whole house as often you are unable to match profile, colour and clip systems. In some instances, the roof will also need to be lifted to replace a metal fascia system.

Lindab Colour Options Lindab offers a full range of colour options.
Eureopean Gutters is currently offering HNZ the Lindab 150mm Gutter in Antique White, Black and Dark Grey and the Lindab 190mm Gutter in Antique White.
European Gutters recommends the use of Antique White as a primary specification as it is a universally compatible, accessible and replaceable colour, which helps in reducing long term maintenance costs.
The listed colour matches are based on the European Gutters current range of Lindab colour swatches. This chart can be updated to reflect the specification requirements of our key customers.
Roof Access Safety Considerations Extreme weather events, uncontrolled organic growth and windblown debris can lead to roof and gutter maintenance issues and cause leaks over time.
If kept clean most roofs and gutters are very robust and can maintain their street appeal and structural integrity for decades.
The Lindab Ladder Bracket is a colour coated product that can be permanently mounted on to the gutter at the safest access point.

Temporary roof access to multi-level properties is particularly dangerous. The permanently fixed Lindab Ladder Bracket will prevent a ladder from sliding, when Operators are accessing the roof to undertake responsive or programmed maintenance work. In the following photos the Lindab Ladder Bracket has been modelled in white so that it contrasts with the black gutter.

Building Code, Industry & RMA Support Documents
Building Code Requirements
E2/AS1, the NZMRM CoP, AS/NZS 3500, Lysaght’s and Dimond Roofing all state that Gutter
Systems must be designed so that water cannot flow back inside the building.
E2/AS1 pg60
E1/AS1 pg44
NZMRM COP 2012
23
AS/NZS 3500 states that high fronted gutters must incorporate provisions, such as slots in the front of the gutter, to stop water flowing back into the roof or building structure. The Lysaght Rainwater Solutions brochure and the Dimond Roofing website also specify overflow requirements for high fronted gutters.
Dimond Roofing Overflow requirements
“There should always be an overflow
outlet provided as a secondary means to
allow water to discharge outside of the
building, should a blockage occur or in
heavy rainfall conditions beyond the scope
of the design. This must eliminate water
from the gutter entering the building”
24
In New Zealand high fronted gutters have historically been designed to act as a screen, to
reduce salty air from being blown up inside the roof. However, this issue is generally limited
to ISO Category 4 & 5 environments and most new builds have
an eave flashing, which negates the need for a high fronted
gutter. Eave flashings can also be installed when replacing
existing gutters on an as required basis.
Though the New Zealand building industry accepts that the overflow from high fronted
gutters will flow over the back of the gutter and down the cladding, there is no Industry
specification as to the minimum gap required to allow this to happen, without the risk of
water tracking inside the building or the concentrated wetting of the cladding.
Resource Management Act Requirements The Resource Management Act states that it is illegal for any substance other than rainwater to be discharged into the stormwater system.
BRANZ 2016 Healthy Houses Report The BRANZ 2016 Healthy Houses report found that, “Ten of the fourteen
sample houses required gutter maintenance, ranging from simple
clearing and cleaning through to a full gutter replacement. Effective
guttering removes stormwater from the
dwelling and channels it away to maintain
dry conditions”.

Existing Property Gutter Audit Summary • Many older properties do not meet the Building Codes roof drainage requirements due
to the carrying capacity of the 125mm gutters that have been installed on these
properties.
• In heavy rainfall ineffective gutter and downpipe systems can result in gutter overshoot issues and will result in gutter overflow issues, which can lead to water tracking back into the building and the concentrated wetting of the property.
• A high capacity 150mm gutter, such as Lindab, would address the Building Code shortfall in downpipes and associated overflow issues on these properties, due to its greater capacity to move water away from the dwelling.
Blocked Gutter Overflow Issues Blocked gutters and heavy rainfall will lead to overflow issues. Well-designed rainwater systems will incorporate overflow measures, such as gutters with a lower front, to ensure that water flows away from the property. When water frequently overflows the back of the gutter it can result in water damage to the property.

Cumnor Terrace, Christchurch Audit Commentary:
This Duplex was built in 2014 and only had one downpipe per property Blocked gutters will lead to overflow issues. The front of this gutter is higher than the back and water can flow back on to the fascia board. The internal brackets on the existing gutter make it hard to maintain, which is a warranty requirement for both steel and plastic gutters.
