SCHOOL CALENDAR Year 7 Girls Tennis:

Congratulations to all the students who on Monday, 21 March represented the school at the most recent interschool tennis competition. A great outcome was achieved with our students now moving forward to the Northern Zone finals. In congratulating the girls, I also congratulate Mr Nicholson for the support he has provided to the team. A more detailed report can be read in the sports section of this newsletter.

Victorian State Baseball Team:

Congratulations to Warwick Purchase (Year 12, Stewart House) who has been selected as part of the Victorian State Baseball team that will be competing in the School Sports Australia Tournament in Perth from 2-6 May. We wish Warwick and his team all the very best in the competition and look forward to hearing about the team’s achievements on their return to Melbourne.

Eltham High School Building Project:

The current building project is progressing to schedule. The fit-out of the Performance Centre will see the installation of approximately 300 seats in a tiered arrangement, acoustic treatment of the space, new curtains, installation of new audio/visual equipment and a new air ventilation system. Alongside this is the development of some new locker pavilions as well as some covered areas in the central courtyard for student use.

Further to this project, we will be meeting with the Department Contractors on Friday of this week to sign off on the design and development stage of the redevelopment of the Maths block which facec Ely Street. Following this we envisage going out to tender by the end of May and from there beginning works towards the end of July early August for completion towards the end of this school year. This is a very exciting time. I will keep you informed as work progresses.

New Basketball Posts, Backboards and Rings:

A great deal of work has taken place over the Term 1 break. Most visible is the completion of the work on the outdoor basketball courts. New Basketball posts, backboards and rings have been installed and new courts were line marked at the same time. I know that students are really excited about this work being carried out so that once again they have access to these sporting facilities during break times. We know that our community makes use of these facilities over the weekends and this is something that we encourage knowing that the facilities will be treated in an appropriate and respectful way.

Sporting Facilities Master Plan:

We have been working very closely with our local State Member of Parliament, Vicki Ward, and with the Shire of Nillumbik and a range of sporting clubs and organisations and primary schools within our community to ultimately develop a Sports Facilities Master Plan followed by the development of the facilities of the school site to better meet the sporting requirements of the school and of local community clubs and organisations.

Two meetings have already taken place and I have to say that I have been really impressed with the level of good will and commitment to achieving an outcome that is suitable to a range of needs of our local community. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive community. This process is being led by our School Council President, Mrs Nicki Hauser and I know that Nicki along with School Council is very grateful for the involvement of so many interested people. I do wish to thank Mr John Fecondo (School Council President of St Helena Secondary College) who having gone through a similar process recently with his own community has been very willing to share his expertise and experience with our group.

The next stage of our work is to invite a consultant to contribute to the planning towards the development of the Master Plan.

Once again I will keep you informed as this work progresses further.

VINCENT SICARI, Principal

Skateboards will be able to be stored securely using a combination padlock that can be used to lock the skateboard to the rack. Students will be able to leave the lock attached to the skateboard rack.

As of Term 2 students will not be able to store their skateboards in the Junior School Office. To ensure that they can store their skateboard securely, students will be required to supply a combination lock for their personal use.

CAREERS

New Eltham High Careers Website

At Eltham High School Pathways and Transition is an important part of your child’s educational experience.

As such I would like to announce the creation of an Eltham High School web based career support site.

It can be accessed at www.elthamhighcareers.com with the majority of menu links open access. However, there is also a dedicated student area where your child can create an account and take advantage of various activities and production tasks. In there you will find interest and occupations quizzes, a resume format, digital portfolio access and many more useful tools. When your child creates their account have them use their school email address and a password will be generated for them.

The site has information for all year levels with the full functionality of the site becoming more appropriate as students move into Year 9. The student account remains accessible across the life of your child’s high school life.

I would encourage you to have a look at the site and if there are any questions regarding its use please feel free to conatct me on 9430 5113 or at [email protected]

Year 10

Year 10 Work Experience 2016: Monday, 2 - Friday, 6 May 2016:

Students can access the required forms via the intranet under the Senior School link or obtain them from outside the Careers office.

Please make an early start on the placement and be aware that this is compulsory program that replaces all classes including Year 11 enhancement.

7 Girls Tennis Triumph:On Monday, 21 March the Eltham High School Year 7 girls Tennis competition was held at Eltham High School. The girls each played six doubles games throughout the day and great improvement was demonstrated by each of the players over the tournament.

Entering the final match of the day, the Eltham A team needed to beat Montmorency A team to take out the competition and progress to the Northern Zone Finals.
