teaching on society and the care of the sick”.

BENEDICTINE monasteries’ rule:

- “The care of the sick is to be placed above

and before every other duty, as if indeed

Christ were being directly served by waiting upon them.”

DEFINITION

YESTERDAY TODAY

Nursing is

caring.

Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of

individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities,

sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the

promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill,

disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe

environment, research, participation in shaping health policy

and in patient and health systems management, and

education are also key nursing roles.

"the act of utilizing the environment of the patient

to assist him in his recovery”

“The unique function of the nurse is to assist theindividual, sick or well, in the performance of

those activities contributing to health or its

recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would

perform unaided if he had the necessary

strength, will or knowledge"

GLOBALIZATION

“Before nurses can take a larger role in the

collaborative work of 21st-century health issues,

they must see the new world and themselves as

they are, not through the often rosy spectacles of

the past. “

means adopting nontraditional and unfamiliarperspectives and methods.

POWER

Having control, influence, or domination over

something or someone (Chandler, 1992)

The ability to get things done, to mobilize

resources, to get and use whatever it is that a

person needs for the goals he or she is

attempting to meet (Kanter, 1993, p. 166)

POWER

Power includes caring practices by nurses which

are used to empower patients (Benner, 2001)

One of the characteristics of a profession is that

professionals have power over the practice of

their discipline which is often referred to as

professional autonomy (Laschinger, Sabiston, &

Kutszcher, 1997).

8/3/2019 New Dimensions in Nursing

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/new-dimensions-in-nursing 22/26

Nurses need power to be able to influence

patients, physicians, and other health careprofessionals.

Powerless nurses are ineffective nurses.

Lack of nursing power may also contribute to

poorer patient outcomes (Manojlovich &

DeCicco, in review).
