Smith as its new Director of Media Relations. Smith comes with a wealth of communications and community policing experience, having spent 16 years with the Anne Arundel County Police Department with the last three serving as the Director of Media Relations. “There is a cosmic shift in thinking underway in modern policing and this situation highlights the importance of communication and will become a model in law enforcement,” said Interim Commissioner Kevin Davis. “Lieutenant Smith, a native son of Baltimore, is the trusted voice of the Anne Arundel County Police Department and I know that many of the men and women within the Baltimore Police Department and the citizens of Baltimore recognize and feel the same level of trust that I do. This is a win for the city and our agency and I thank Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh and Anne Arundel County Police Chief Timothy Altomare for their continued support.” Originally from Baltimore, Smith looks forward to being a part of the Baltimore Police Department. “I’m excited about the opportunity to help my city during one of its most challenging times,” said Smith. “I know that there are a host of challenges ahead, but I am committed to giving my absolute best to the citizens of Baltimore.” Smith is known in the Baltimore and Washington media markets for his innovative use of social media and his level of transparency. He operates his own Twitter handle (@TJSmithMedia) to speak to citizens and media directly and he also uses the new technology, Periscope, to show citizens and media live streams of breaking events. “Interim Commissioner Davis has been given the autonomy to make decisions that are in the best interest of public safety and transparency for the citizens of Baltimore,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. “I fully support his decision to hire a skilled police communications professional who is already a trusted voice in the Baltimore area.”
