Spring planting in the LOOP -By Elaine Hyde | Editor

Soon the first signs of spring in the city parks will lift spirits and the Arctic tundra will become a thing of the past as we rediscover flowers, color and freedom.

Each year the Lakeshore East Park is transformed by a team of volunteers from a flattened slushy mess, into a breathtakingly fragrant, and perfectly eye popping flower and garden show in what some residents consider their backyard. But achieving such beauty takes planning. “We did a lot of prep in the fall to make this spring extra special, which considering all this snow will be a welcome surprise,” says Dan Koz, a resident in New Eastside who heads volunteer efforts in the Park.

The 4.6-acre Lakeshore East Park is part of the award winning Lakeshore East development. It has a gated children’s playground and splash pad, a dog park, water fountains and a large open field. New Eastside Real Estate Summary - By David Porter, Broker Associate, Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

Fewer homes on the market, historically low interest rates, properties sold more quickly, and increased sale prices make this a seller's market. If you are thinking about selling your home, this is the time to

act. But, with interests rates projected to increase, the number of people who will be able to afford your home will shrink with every up-tick. Given the proper research and attention to detail, the savvy buyer can still find a great deal even in this seller's market. Our own Lakeshore East is following the same trend as the rest of Cook County. We have fewer homes on the market, selling at higher prices than this time last year. We are out performing Cook County when it comes to average raw dollar gains, but we are behind when it comes to percentage gains in the fourth quarter of 2013. The good news is that our percentage increase lags only because our property values didn’t decline as much as others when the real estate bubble burst in 2007—it is often the case that in a declining market, the most valued property falls least. The raw dollar gains stayed high because even a small percentage increase translates into significant dollars when the property’s value is initially high. Maggie Daley Park and Grant Park Updates -By Bob O’Neill, President of the Grant Park Conservancy

Preliminary rendering of the Maggie Daley Field House to open by January 2015. Photo courtesy of Grant Park Conservancy.

Maggie Daley Park is on schedule to be completed by November 2014 with additional spring planting going in the spring of 2015. The white geofoam you see being installed this spring is what is used to add hills and contour the topography of the park to allow beautiful vistas of Lake Michigan. The geofoam is necessary because Maggie Daley Park is a huge, 20-acre green roof over the garages below. Hills made of just soil, without geofoam would be too heavy and the weight of the extra soil would collapse the building underneath. Geofoam lasts so long that the geofoam that was in the old park and unearthed is being re-used.

In the southwest corner of Grant Park, the conversion of a 3-acre space into a skate park, is set to get additional funding from the Near South tax increment financing (TIF). If secured, completion of the skate park is expected by December 2014. The new skate park is intended to provide an attractive alternative to skaters who might otherwise use other public areas not designated for such activities.

Volunteers transform Lakeshore East Park Park, from Page 1

Technically part of the Loop, the Lakeshore East Park and its surrounding residential buildings of the New Eastside, are distinctly set apart. “It’s like a suburb in the middle of downtown Chicago,” says New Eastside resident Ian Sharping. It is that suburban feel which allows locals with a green thumb to join forces during the annual Spring Planting Day. “May 17 is time to make your mark, and then watch what you plant grow, so the more volunteers the better on that day,” says Koz, who also organizes weekly volunteers who trim the ornamental roses.

In the past, Koz has selected roses to create focal points along pathways. To choose plants appropriate for an urban garden, a test section is done for a year and reviewed for quality, maintenance requirements, bugs and cold weather die back. “Downtown Chicago is a world in itself so what may do well in the suburbs does not do well downtown,” says Koz.

So this spring, as you take the first tentative steps outdoors, imagine smelling the roses that will be planted along the pathways. It might even be a rose you planted yourself. What a breath of fresh air!

Volunteers interested in participating in Spring Planting Day, Saturday, May 17, 2014 should email [email protected] and subscribe to www.neweastsidecommunity.com to receive updates.

How to maintain a beautiful park 3 Tips from Dan Koz, Head Volunteer | Lakeshore East Park

1. Keep fellow residents accountable. If soccer players are tearing up the field because of recent rains, remind them to come back when it’s dry. If someone is stomping on flowerbeds ask them to respect your park.

2. Parents should keep the sand out of the children’s fountains and drains as it’s impossible to keep them going when kids are scooping buckets full of sand into the drains. Keep the sand in the pit.

3. It’s tempting, but don’t pick the flowers or you take away that special moment for the next person who doesn’t get to enjoy the natural beauty. The park is here for all to enjoy.

The Process of Reprocessing - Recycling in the New Eastside

By Ophelia Dodds | Staff Writer Living in high-rise blocks, control over how and when we recycle is a joint effort between residents and their buildings. We look at how easy the buildings are making it for residents, and what residents can do to help.

A sample review of some residential buildings in New Eastside showed a varied approach to recycling. The Regatta, Park Millennium and North Harbor Tower offer a recycling bin on every level, with a list of what is appropriate for recycling. The benefit of this is convenience for the resident, although unfortunately there is an issue with residents contaminating these bins with non- recyclable items, leading to the loss of an entire load into the trash.

In other buildings, recycling has to be taken to a central point. Harbor Point, for example, says that newspapers can be left in the recycling bins on each floor, but aluminum, glass and plastic should all be taken down to the loading dock. Junk mail, magazines, telephone books and newspaper inserts cannot be recycled. The brand new Coast building requires ALL recycling to be taken down to the garage, with no recycling options at apartment level.

Of course, some of the onus has to be on the resident to take a responsible attitude, but people are busy and often cannot be bothered to collect a big pile of recycling in a small apartment, then lug it down to a central location. As a result the recycling goes in the trash instead. The “bins on every level” seems to be a better option, but again relies on everyone on the floor being conscientious.

So what is the answer? The building managers do what they can, all of them encouraging residents to recycle as much as possible. The Park Millennium offers a safe recycling program for electronics, and this January, North Harbor Tower arranged giant Goodwill bins to help residents get rid of unwanted goods. Also, the Salvation Army comes to Lakeshore East Park on the first Saturday of every month and will take most items.

The City of Chicago guidelines recommend that high-rise buildings collect recyclables in the same location that the trash is disposed of (i.e. chute rooms) and that recycle bins are put in mailrooms and laundry rooms. They also note that low resident participation is often due to a lack of confidence in the recycling programs, which may well be exacerbated if they see a ‘contaminated’ load of recycling being put down the trash chute, for example,

without understanding why.

Recycling will always be a challenge for high-rise buildings, but it is also an opportunity, given the volume of potential recycling. The average person generates 4.5 pounds of trash every day, that is about 1.5 tons of trash per year and the EPA estimates that 75 percent of trash is recyclable. Think how much recycling could happen in a building with 700 residents! By keeping residents informed and involved, our building managers can really improve the way we as a neighborhood recycle.

And residents have a responsibility too. It is important to make a real effort to put the correct recycling in the correct bins and let building managers know if the recycling system is not working. After all, this is about the future of our country and what we leave behind for future generations. So talk to your building managers, talk to your neighbors and hopefully everyone can take advantage of t`he opportunity that high rise living offers.

DOORMAN OF THE MONTH

Michael Burger a doorman at North Harbor Tower, 175 N Harbor Drive, has worked there for 10 years. – By Ophelia Dodds

What do you like best about your job? Getting to meet people from all across the globe. I really love talking about similarities and differences in our experiences through life.

What is the worst thing about your job? The turnover. Losing friends who move away is hard, especially when you have seen their kids grow up and been part of their lives. Then they are gone.

Describe yourself in 3 words Charismatic, insightful, attentive!

What qualities make a good doorperson? Attention to detail, excellent memory and being personable.

Top Chicago sports team? White Sox.

What is the strangest thing that has happened to you while on the job? I would say picking up drunk people on the weekend from the lobby and returning them to their apartments, but that happens every week! The hardest thing was when I went to check on an older lady who hadn’t been seen that day. Sadly she had passed away. I knew her well and it was very difficult and sad. What is the nicest thing a resident has said to you or done for you? Some ladies came in to view an apartment one Sunday and afterwards wrote a letter to the management saying that they knew they were going to sign the lease before they even saw the apartment because of the service I gave them. That was really amazing!

Moving your workout outdoors -By Kristine Martino | Community Contributor

After being confined to indoor workouts all winter, you might be in a workout rut. With spring around the corner, it’s time to freshen up that same boring winter workout by moving it outdoors with intervals.

Interval workouts incorporate both the aerobic and anaerobic systems, allowing you to burn more calories in less time, and have more fun. Mix and match the following routines to rev up your workout this spring and keep your New Year’s resolution afloat at the beach, lakefront trail, or in Lakeshore East Park.

Athletes at Heart: Warm-up with a slow jog, high knees, butt kicks, & side shuffles. Continue with a 30 second sprint, followed by 2-5 minutes of repeated warm up exercises and 10-20 second rest between cycles. When you approach a bench on your run, add some incline pushups (for beginners)

or decline pushups (more advanced). Incorporate

stairs by climbing, jumping, or lunging to firm up the legs and glutes.

Yogis: Bring a beach towel that you don’t mind getting dirty and practice your downward dog, sun salutations, and forearm balance at the park. Before a pose on the ground add 30-60 sec of mountain climber variations; and as you rise up, mix in jumping jacks and kickboxing kicks.

Bench Potatoes: A bench can become a very effective piece of work out equipment. Choose exercises that get your heart rate up like triceps dips or step-ups on the bench, pushups, burpees, jump squats, or high plank to low plank. If lounging on the bench is still more enticing, it might be

time to seek out extra motivation and accountability with a certified personal trainer.

Groupies: Join running groups with CARA & Universal Soul, Magellan Softball and Volleyball leagues, Urban Kayaks, and local boot camps.

Kristine Martino is the owner of Tozai Fitness and has been a passionate leader the fitness industry for over 13 years.
