Stop, take a deep breath or two, be silent, and just rest in God’s presence for the duration of your trip. When something starts to trouble you or anger you or upset you, stop and close your eyes, take a deep breath or two, be silent, and give the situation to God. At night, before you turn out your light, stop, take a deep breath or two, be silent and thank God for the day. You can see there is a pattern of stop, take a deep breath or two, be silent, and “rest” in the presence of God. “The Wesleyan”

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

My guess is that when you think of some of your favorite Bible verses, this one comes to mind. I mean, who among us hasn’t experienced those times where pressures, burdens, responsibilities, commitments and more weigh heavy on us. And our hearts and souls yearn for that rest Jesus promises. But unfortunately, we often just keep going about our usual daily routines, letting frustrations build, expending energy, worrying about the future, and we don’t find that rest. Why? Well, Jesus says first, “come to me.” Come to me. And that means we must “go away” from everything else. Because only then can we truly be in solitude and silence with Jesus. We are learning in our Leadership Team meetings, that “quiet time” and “prayer” are two spiritual disciplines which deepen our relationship with God, and give us the help we need to find that rest we so desperately want.

Author and doctor, Bill Gaultiere writes, “In solitude and silence, you learn to stop doing, stop producing, stop people pleasing, stop entertaining yourself, stop obsessing, stop doing anything except to simply be yourself before God so you can be found by him. Solitude and silence make space – space in our souls and space in our lives for God to do a deep work inside us and through us.” Now you’ve heard me talk a lot about the importance for time alone with God. And we often think a lengthy period of time is required, which is hard for so many people to find. We’re all bombarded with noise, busyness, emails, texts, meetings, and other things which clutter our minds and days, and it is easy to get caught up in the moment and not take the time to “come to me.” And so this month, I would like to challenge you to find that solitude and silence in small steps. Especially when you find you need that “rest” the most. Here are some ideas: • In the morning, after you get out of bed, and before you look at your phone, the computer, or the TV, stop and

center on God, take a deep breath or two, and silently give God your day. • When you are driving to work, on an errand, to the doctor, wherever you’re going, and you start to turn on the

radio, or pick up your phone, don’t! Stop, take a deep breath or two, be silent, and just rest in God’s presence for the duration of your trip.

• When something starts to trouble you or anger you or upset you, stop and close your eyes, take a deep breath or two, be silent, and give the situation to God.

• At night, before you turn out your light, stop, take a deep breath or two, be silent and thank God for the day. You can see there is a pattern of stop, take a deep breath or two, be silent, and “rest” in the presence of God. Trust me, once you find the peace of even just those few minutes alone with God, you’ll want to spend even more time with him. I want to share with you the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, in The Faith We Sing, Come and Find the Quiet Center.

Come and find the quiet center, in the crowded life we lead.

Find the room for hope to enter, find the frame where we are freed.

Clear the chaos and the clutter. Clear our eyes that we can see all the things that really matter.

Be at peace and simply be.

Silence is a friend who claims us, cools the heat and slows the pace.

God it is who speaks and names us, knows our being, touches base.

In the Spirit let us travel, open to each other’s pain.

Let our loves and fears unravel, celebrate the space we gain.

May you find the quiet center where your heavy burdens will be relived in the rest of Jesus Christ. ~ Pastor Rebecca

Pentecost. On Sunday, June 4th, we will celebrate Pentecost. It is a remembrance of when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples with a “mighty wind and tongues of fire.” This event empowered the disciples to go out and spread the news about Jesus Christ. After Jesus’ death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called “the church.” Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. Thus Pentecost is the church’s birthday. The term Pentecost comes from a Greek root meaning fifty. Pentecost is fifty days after Easter. The liturgical color for Pentecost is red, denoting the tongues of fire. As part of our celebration, everyone is invited to wear their red John Wesley t-shirts symbolizing the fire, as well as the passion we should have as Christians wanting to share about Christ in our lives.

NEW SUMMER WORSHIP TIMES!!! The Worship Ministry Team, in consultation with Pastor Rebecca, is changing the times of our worship services from Sunday, July 2nd through Sunday, September 3rd. The new worship times will be:

7:30am at Surf Drive Beach

9:30am in the Sanctuary

Adult Sunday School will be at 8:30am in the Library

The reasons for making this change are as follows: • Summer is a more casual time of year, and the season is short. People want to worship, but they also want to be

able to enjoy God’s creation as much of the day as possible. This change would allow everyone to be out earlier on Sunday morning.

• Because the beach service is directed toward people who do not currently attend John Wesley, it is a perfect opportunity for Pastor Rebecca and other John Wesleyans to meet and talk with people. However, because of the short time frame between the beach service and the 8:30 service, Pastor Rebecca cannot spend any quality time meeting new people, which defeats part of the purpose of this service.

• The 9:30 service will be similar to the 8:30, and we will offer Communion every week, which will meet the need of those who attend 8:30, and will allow for a more casual atmosphere during the summer.

• Because our congregants spread out between three services, there is a lower attendance at both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. If new people come to either of these services and see fewer people, they may feel that we are not the size church they are looking for. There is a threshold when people need to see a fairly filled sanctuary, and in the summer, attendance can drop too close to this threshold.

• And finally, doing three services every Sunday puts a strain on Pastor Rebecca, and she wants to be at her best for all services. Cutting back to two would be beneficial for her health and well-being.

Worship on the Beach! John Wesley will be sponsoring a beach worship service at Surf Dr. Beach on Sundays from 7:30 – 8:00am, beginning July 2nd. This is open to everyone and we invite the public. It is a casual service with song, meditation and prayer. Pastor Rebecca will preach the same sermon at the 9:30 service. (There will be no 8:30 or 10:30 for the summer months.) What a wonderful place to worship – in God’s open-air sanctuary, and what a great way to invite friends and neighbors to “church!” As we seek to find ways to reach out and share the good news of Christ, this beach service is a perfect opportunity to bring a chair, bring a friend and worship together! Note: No Beach Service on 7/16 or 8/20.

Spring Rummage Sale:

THANK YOU to everyone who helped with our Rummage Sale/Indoor Yard Sale on April 21st and 22nd. It was wonderful to see the red shirts, the smiles, the fellowship with one another. And what a great opportunity to both share the love and spirit of Christ with the community, and also to make money to help support the missions and ministries of our church. A special thank you to Aline Ward for coordinating this great event and also to everyone who donated items. When all was said and done, the Sale brought in $4,500.00 which will be used to support our church and our mission work in our local community.

Spring Plant Sale:

The weather just wasn’t with us this year! We had lots of rain during the setup and on Friday and customer count was down 25% over last year, but sales were about the same as 2015 and profit a little better. Gross volume was $8,000 with profit at $3,000. Thank you to all the volunteers who braved the weather and to those who came to shop!

This lovely young couple stopped by the church one day when Pastor Rebecca was away in Indiana. They came up the back walkway, hoping to chat with the Pastor about having their wedding here at John Wesley. The Office Administrator told them the Pastor would be back the next week, but the couple never returned. Seems as though all that squabbling that people heard from them that day must’ve turned into a really big argument, and most likely, they decided to postpone the wedding. As you can see, the young male seemed a little full of himself anyway, but let’s hope it all worked out for those crazy kids!

A Note from Our Director of Music Ministries

I am so excited to become a part of the John Wesley team! Everybody has been so welcoming and supportive that I feel I have found a new family! I have adapted a choral piece for the final Sunday of June. It will incorporate the Adult Choir, the Children's Choir, and the Bell Choir in a jubilant jazz rendition of Psalm 100. As a director, my very important job is to provide a fun, inspiring, productive, and anxiety-free rehearsal time for everyone. Choosing music is a fun and challenging part of my job. I feel that if I do it right, everyone remains engaged and inspired, including the audience. I love to see toes tapping or wet eyeballs!

A Gas Station at the Cemetery?

This is a story about innovative attempts to procure funding for the construction of John Wesley church. In 1957, with construction well underway, it was obvious from the Trustees’ minutes that raising enough money to complete the building was going to be a challenge.

In the 1950s, gasoline companies were busy creating a retail market to meet the needs of growing automobile use. These were exciting times for the automobile in the U.S. Federal funding for the Eisenhower Interstate Highway system had just passed. A simple jingle “See the USA In Your Chevrolet” and several TV shows sponsored by General Motors (Pat Boone, Dinah Shore) became very popular. California Oil Company, part of Standard Oil, was selling a brand of gasoline called Calso (which eventually became Chevron). Calso identified a portion of the Main Street Cemetery as suitable for use as a service station and approached the owner (the Methodist church).

Apparently, some preliminary enquiries were made by the oil company leading to this cryptic item in the July 25, 1957 Trustees’ minutes: “party still interested in the Main Street Cemetery”. Then in September, a “cemetery study committee” is formed and finally, when a formal offer is received, we learn of a “lease to Calso Gasoline Co on cemetery land $168.50 per month for 20 years” (February 26, 1958 minutes).

The church fathers decided to pursue this opportunity which lead to a discussion of moving graves to free up the portion of the property near Main Street. The following startling notes appear in the minutes of the March 26, 1958 Trustees’ meeting: “Mr. Sylvia’s approval for moving graves” and “Health Department to have permits ready in morning”. To cushion the shock of moving graves, the Trustees had previously held meetings, written letters and visited affected people. Permits in hand, the moves began. It is not known how many graves were actually moved.

Next, a permit for the gas station was requested from the town. At the Selectmen’s meeting held to debate the church’s request for the permit, the actual issue of whether or not to grant the permit was obscured for most of the meeting, “as proponents and opponents debated the ethics of digging up a cemetery” (Falmouth Enterprise, May 13, 1958). A crowd of more than 70 overflowed the police station hearing room to make their feelings known. The attorney for the church made the case in favor of the permit, citing the colonial style of the proposed building and the fact that “the money from the lease will cover perpetual care for the cemetery and enable the church to continue its building program”. Also mentioned was additional revenue to the town and improvement in appearance of the cemetery, which “has looked very badly at times.” When one Mrs. Lucy Crocker Warren got her chance to speak, “she told the selectmen that ‘she had more dead buried there than any other person in the room’. She said she could tell a tale that began 82 years ago and proceeded to keep the floor for the next half hour.” She heatedly proclaimed “There is nothing so low as to dig up dead bodies”.

The actual issue of the permit was settled at a subsequent meeting when it was denied based on an obscure section of the bylaws that bars a filling station within 300 feet of an “institution for the sick or dependent”. What we now know as the Marks building or the Poor House was then the town infirmary! The church appealed the decision “under pressure from the gasoline attorney,” but the decision was not overturned, and the gasoline company backed down.

However, interest in having some other business on the cemetery lot continued, leading to a “signed agreement to sell cemetery lot” (June 4, 1959). When it was discovered that the lot was zoned “public use” an article was prepared for town meeting to rezone the lot. This is one of the last notes (July 14, 1959) in the Trustees’ book of minutes so we don’t know any details of the town meeting deliberations. However, we do know that the zoning is unchanged today, and we have the cemetery intact and well maintained largely due to the efforts of Bob Dinsmore and Donna Walcovy with support from the town. ~Ken Peal

June We welcome summertime this month

Of June, on the twenty-first day.

After the cold winter and spring,

We pray the warm weather will stay.

School is out…time for vacation,

Biking, boating, swimming and fun.

The Cape attracts many tourists;

Time to relax. Summer’s begun.

Gardens now begin to flourish.

Young birds are fledging from the nest.

All of Nature is now awake

After many cold months of rest.

We raise our flags on June fourteenth,

Thankful for our country so free,

Give praise to our forefathers for

This land of opportunity.

We pay tribute to all fathers

On June eighteenth, their special day,

And, give thanks to God, our Father,

As we serve Him with love and pray.
