By Jay Adams CEG CORRESPONDENT For Joseph Joyce, owner of Joe Joyce Excavating Inc. a site work/foundation business in Braintree, Mass., one of the teeming suburbs which surround crowded Boston, Mass., it has always been about children. For 14 years, Joyce, an Irish immigrant, has worked on more than 20 separate projects for Boston’s Habitat for Humanity, the popular charity that builds homes and shelters for the poor and needy. More often than not, according to George O’Malley, director of projects of Habitat for Humanity, Greater Boston, Joyce has offered his excavation, demolition, foundation building, site work, utility work and other services for free or at a fraction of the cost. “Joe Joyce Excavating Inc. has been our excavator for many years. He is our ‘go-to guy’ for all matters civil. He discounts his services to us beyond what would be normally expected; oftentimes, forgetting to send us a bill at all,” said O’Malley. “He provides the equipment and manpower for excavation and utility work as well as the guidance for instal- lation and design of same. Due to liability issues, only per- sonnel of Joyce Excavation can participate in this phase of construction.” Empty Since 1968 Joyce and Habitat worked with an army of other volun- teers assembled through building contractors and the com- munity on the Blue Hills project. other unrest broke out in many urban areas through-out the United States. “This site was the primary location for this tur-

moil in Boston. As a result of the destruction anddamage to the existing buildings, several had to berazed. Sometime later, the city of Boston acquiredthe parcels and issued an RFP for the land’s redevel-opment,” said O’Malley. Habitat for Humanity, Greater Boston had the

preferred proposal and was subsequently awarded the devel-opment rights. The Habitat proposal was to develop 24 unitsof housing and 2,000 sq. ft. (185.8 sq m) of commercial busi-ness space. “Habitat for Humanity does not normally build commer-

cial space, but due to its location and the need for employ-ment opportunities in this neighborhood, the decision wasmade to include it in our proposal,” said O’Malley. “Due toour manner of construction, our development took longerthan what a normal developer would take. We rely on vol-unteers for the majority of the construction. Professionalcraftsmen or contractors are used for limited tasks; general-ly, those requiring special licensing and permits [plumbers, electricians etc.,] or those requiring skill operators of spe-cialized equipment [excavators, asphalt equipment etc.].” The new homeowners at Blue Hills, who will occupy their

own homes for the first time in the United States, come fromvery diverse backgrounds. “Some are first generation Americans, others have emi-

grated from countries such as Somalia, Ethiopia, Haiti, theDominican Republic, as well as numerous islands within theCaribbean,” said O’Malley.Joe Joyce knows quite a bit about immigration himself.

He emigrated several decades ago from the West of Ireland,a place called Rosmuc in County Galway. “We grew up out in the sticks,” said Joyce. “My dad had

a small construction business in Ireland, an excavating com-pany. Since I was four years old, sitting on his lap, I learnedto drive the trucks. I learned all the equipment.”In 1991, after working as a laborer here and there, he

founded Joe Joyce Excavating Inc., which currently has fiveemployees.

Someone Pulls Up to theCurb

In 2000, Joyce was working oneof his, “small, little jobs,” as hecalls them, when a man pulled upto his work site unexpectedly in hiscar.“I’ll tell you the truth, I was

walking in Roxbury one day and aman named Paul stopped. Heworked for Habitat and he askedme if I was interested in doingsome work. I was working on thestreet and he was driving by,” saidJoyce. “I went down to their shopon Wayland Street, [to work on]the first job, and I’ve been thereever since. I’ve been working forHabitat for almost 14 years now, doing general excavating, sitework, foundations, some demoli-tion work. I’m only a small com-pany. I don’t build from theground-up. Other [contractors] dothat with the volunteers helping.”Joyce’s rewards have been more

than personal. “We refer to the building of our

homes as a partnership. Not in thelegal sense, but rather in the truesense of people working togetherto a common end,” said O’Malley.“In this particular example [BlueHills], the partnership includes thehomesteader, the affiliate and per-haps, most importantly, the volun-teers, vendors and contractors. Most of the latter participate forone or two projects and move on,having ‘given back.’ But Joe Joyceis much like the Energizer Bunnyand keeps going on. He has beenconsistently there for us. As a smalltoken of our admiration for hisservice to us, Joe was awarded theprestigious ‘Golden HammerAward’ for service well beyond thenorm.” Habitat for Humanity Greater

Boston has completed in excess of100 homes. “We are about to close on the

last three units of a total of 24 atBlue Hill Place. These units willbe conveyed in February,” saidO’Malley. “Finishing the Blue HillPlace project is another milestonein our journey to help eradicatepoverty housing in the greaterBoston area. We cannot do whatwe do without people like Joedoing what he does.”

A Lot of LedgeWhat Joe Joyce did at Blue Hills

was take the better part of threemonths just breaking throughunyielding stone layers beneath thestreet.“There was a lot of ledge, a lot

of ledge. We had a breaker; it wasour large excavator with a 5,000-lb. hammer on it. It took at leastthree months to do the excavating, and the water and sewer. Theywere all brand new buildings theyput up. I don’t put up buildings. Ithad been a vacant lot. There weretrees there. The city of Bostonwanted to dig out the trees andreplant them. They didn’t want tokill the trees. Years ago, there wasa cinema there. We came upon thefoundation of the cinema when wewere digging,” Joyce said. “But allwe found was just a lot of old bot-tles and a lot of ledge.”Joe Joyce is one stone in a ledge

individuals, said O’Malley. “Volunteerscome from businesses, fraternal groups, reli-gious organizations school groups and indi-viduals. Due to insurance regulations, ourvolunteers cannot participate in the excava-tion processes.”

When the final touches are put on BlueHills Place in February, Habitat forHumanity will be building six units in anoth-er section of Boston, called Roslindale. “Weare also rehabbing two units in the Mattapansection of Boston. Our newest project willbreak ground on Woodbine Street inRoxbury as soon as the weather allows. Infact, a view of the project will show Joe’sbrand of backhoe on site and ready to go,”said O’Malley.

Joe Joyce will lend a hand, of course, ashe did on similar projects in South Boston,on Wayland Street, in Newton.

“Oh, I have done about, at least, 20 proj-ects for Habit for Humanity. This job was abig, big job. But I mostly do little things, hereand there. I think it’s a great charity. I reallyenjoy it, I really do,” Joyce said. “It’s a great, great organization. A lot of people shoulddonate as much as they can to it. Everybodyis in a great mood, smiling. I think it’s great.”

“We believe that the elimination of pover-ty housing is everyone’s responsibility andthat we are here to facilitate this,” saidO’Malley. “Our vision is a world whereeveryone has a decent place to live. We can-

not do this without the help of great peoplelike Joe Joyce and his crew. We want to say,‘thank you,’ and remember, we can’t dowhat we do without our volunteers anddonors doing what they do.”

With childhood memories of sitting on hisDad’s lap, learning how to move dirt with anadult-sized excavator still fresh in his mind,Joe Joyce employs his skills for other chil-dren now.

“My favorite thing about this is when yousee the kids go into the houses. They are allhappy, everyone is smiling. I think it’s agood thing. I enjoy seeing the kids and theirfamilies get their houses. Sometimes, I’ll justgive my services if it’s not costing me anymoney. I’ll work weekends, or on aSaturday. If they ask me to do something, Ikind of do it on my own time. I have noproblem doing it.”

Habitat for Humanity, Greater Boston isalways in need of skilled companies andcontractors to donate or, at least, deeply dis-count their products or services. Every dollarthat they don’t spend on today’s projectallows them to build tomorrow. For moreinformation, call 617/423-2223 or visitwww.habitatboston.org.

practices and cultivates good community relations, theDiamond Achievement Commendation is a proud accom-plishment, according to company owner Steve Bevilacqua. “We are extremely pleased to have earned this prestigious

commendation,” he said. “From the earliest days of thisplant’s design and construction, our commitment to both thecommunity and the environment has been at the forefront ofour efforts. Attaining this recognition underscores the factthat corporate progress, community relations and environ-mental stewardship can co-exist.”NAPA established the Diamond Achievement program in

1999. The self-assessment process addresses six essentialfacets of the asphalt plant/site: appearance; operations; envi-ronmental practices; safety; permitting/regulatory compli-ance; and community relations. Securing the commendationexemplifies a proven level of expertise in — and a belief inthe importance of — each of those areas.“Earning the Diamond Achievement Commendation

clearly demonstrates a company’s commitment to excellencewith a community focus,” said NAPA Chairman JohnKeating. “With this commendation, Bevilacqua Asphalt has

joined some elite colleagues within the asphalt industry.Achieving that standard of excellence is challenging, but thisshows it can be accomplished with a genuine dedication toresponsible practices and continuous improvement.”
