He has a tattoo of his favorite Caterpillar dozer down one arm. It is not easy naming Drennan’s favorite Cat as he is an expert on all of them going back a century. Drennan, not yet 31, learned the trade through family who were in construction, the Army and served as firefighters. He started learning machinery at age seven, running a Cat 245 with hammer from 1978 on, and a D4C. “I got into construction thanks to my grand- mother who owns Brustin Realty in Massachusetts. There was large construction [then], so I was on site on my days off from school. I come from a long line of construction workers. My grandfather was in the military. He did a little bit of everything. My other grandfather was a firefighter, he ran machines for brush,” said Drennan. His boyhood fascination with running models of Cats remains strong as the Walpole machine operator owns a fan- tastic collection of Cat miniatures and models, almost 400 strong, ranging in size from 1/16th to actual scale to 1/87th. “I also have a Caterpillar tattoo down my arm of a 436 Series 2 Cat backhoe.” His Own YouTube Channel Drennan, who runs dozers and excavators for a few Massachusetts companies, also is a longtime member of the New England Rockbusters, serving on its show board. Drennan just helped other Rockbusters organize a fan- tastic regional event in late summer in Plainfield, Conn. Further, Drennan cata- logued the event with hun- dreds of photos and videos. Sending the material to a rel- atively new Web site called bostonpowercat.com, where Drennan links site organiz- ers in the United Kingdom with the lowdown, operation specs, history, development and fascination with the long, historic line of Caterpillars over the past century in America. He also has a YouTube channel called catmack316 where Drennan has posted more than 150 videos of heavy iron fes- tivals, projects, conventions and related visuals of extraordi- nary scope and presentation. He does all this after overcoming a serious learning dis- ability, which hampered his entry into the field and chal- lenges him continually as technology changes. Yet, Drennan has kept up with every type of construction, demo and haz- mat license and urges anyone entering the field to do the same thing if they want to excel or succeed in the con- tracting industry in permit- strict Massachusetts. “Yes, it was very difficult, because I have a learning disorder, and ADHD. more. The company has been around for more than 20years,” he added. “It’s all a family company, father and sonowners.”“I also do stuff for myself with a friend. The best work I

have done is demo. I obtained a lot of knowledge from a guynamed Dave Philips of LRC Development Services, whichis closed now due to his health. A great guy and my mentor,”he added. “I have been in the trade for more than 20 years. Irecommend anyone coming into this business, going forownership of a small company, to get every license you can— 1a, 2b, hoisting licenses, hazmat, and fork lift licenses, because that’s a new law that just passed in Massachusetts tooperate a quick coupler. “Don’t stress out much. If it is in your blood, you are

good. If not, it’s going to be hard,” he stressed to those whowould enter this field.

Cats at the RockbustersThe Northeast Rockbuster Chapter of the Historical

Construction Equipment Association started in 1998.Drennan joined in 2009. “We show off old equipment that built America, and went

through the war. We teach people knowledge of them, oranything they ask. We appear at shows with machines on atrailer. We sell books, clothes and more,” said Drennan. “Myvintage toy is a 43 Cat d4 cable dozer that was in World WarII and appears on YouTube, Facebook, bostonpowercat.com,and other places. I have been restoring her for more than ayear. “I loved Cats my whole life. I ran them all. I know the his-

tory of Caterpillar. I also collect scale models. I have about380 models and growing,” he added. Drennan has learned the inner workings of dozens of

machines, how to fix them, how to make them hum. He sim-ply loves listening to the 345 Cat excavator with hammerbanging away, feeling the vibrations, hearing the 972G Catloader running beside him, loading trucks and keeping his“spot” clean. “One time, I stayed late with owner Dave Philips to demo

a few homes to make way for a Walgreen’s. That was a greatjob,” added Drennan. The “heavy” friendships he has made across New

England and even across the Pond to Wales in the U.K.through his love of Cats, has been nothing less than aston-ishing. “My favorite Rockbuster guy is Paul Jenkins. He is a

Lexington cop and a father figure to me. Another is the pres-

ident, Kevin Maguire. There are too many to list. They areall awesome. They help me and I help them,” he said. “The guy from the U.K. is also a good buddy. I have been

doing this for the last several months for him. They want toknow about Cats over there, too,” he said. “When I joinedRockBusters in 2009, I had a 1957 Caterpillar D2. I fixed itup and ran it until the engine blew. The one I have now is a1943 Caterpillar D4, a regular dozer. I found mine inOakham, Massachusetts. I actually brought her to a showthis year and premiered her, even though I was in the middleof a restore.” In August, Drennan and his board set up an event for the

N.E. Chapter of The Historical Construction EquipmentAssociation (HCEA), a non-profit organization which isdedicated to historical preservation for public educationregarding the history of construction, dredging and surfacemining industries. The organization has a dedicated museum which not only

houses vintage machinery from the 1800s to the 1960s(some of which are extremely rare), but also is home to amassive library of literature, sales brochures and photo-graphs all relating to the construction and mining industryand all available for research purposes. The great thing about the HCEA is that they do not spe-

cialize in one era or type of equipment. They cover anythingand everything related to construction, dredging and surfacemining industries without prejudice. The HCEA contains Chapters which serve to unite mem-

bers locally, and are spread across the United States. Chaptermembers meet up on a regular basis, usually in a member’shome or shop. The Chapters have their own public construc-tion shows where antique machinery of all types and sizesgather and can be seen “working” during the event. The North East Rockbusters Chapter covers Connecticut,

Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island andVermont. Drennan’s group recently held its annual show, which hosted an amazing array of antique machinery andwas a great opportunity to see the machines digging, work-ing and hauling in the display area. The massive show took place over three days in

Plainfield, Conn. Kevin put his construction skills to gooduse by preparing the actual show ground in the days beforethe show opened to the public. Drennan exhibited and docu-mented the festival, along with his 1943 Military CaterpillarD4 bulldozer.

Old vs. New An avid Instagram user, he posted great and varied con-

tent from the world of construction. Drennan is becoming a“must follow” in the world of social media and goes by theuser name of “catmack316,” the same name of his largeYouTube channel with its 150-plus video uploads coveringall sorts of construction equipment and that massive scalemodel collection. “What fascinates me is comparing the old technology to

today,” said Drennan. “They looked awesome. They still run.I have got that ’43 still going strong. The operators are laziertoday. The machines today have radio, AC. Those oldmachines never did. “Your AC was the open air and the heat was from the

motor. They had different hand cranks, brakes and all thatfun stuff, so you have to work harder with those machines. You became a real man at that point. It separated the menfrom the boys,” said Drennan. “I have two motors on the ’43;a Pony, or pup, motor to start and engage the diesel motor. You have to kick that in to warm up the antifreeze on thedozer to help it start. The sounds are awesome. You cansmell the diesel first thing in the morning when they fire up. “I had to put a new Pony motor in, bang out dents, gave it

a new paint job and sanded it, pretty much replacing every-thing as I go — new battery, new terminals, new lights,”added Drennan. “I was fascinated with machines since I wastwo. I still have my original Tonka truck. I do diarama mod-els with my construction models. People call me a kid; theysay it is ridiculous. But I don’t spend money on alcohol ordrugs and it keeps me out of trouble and my wife fully sup-ports it. “I had a hard road. I have a learning disability and ADHD,

so that took a lot out of me; that was a hard road in this field,”said Drennan. “But I help elderly people on the side of theroad. I never charge them. I just do what I can.” For more information, find Kevin Drennan on Facebook,

YouTube or go to www.bostonpowercat.com.(This story also can be found on Construction

U.S. Pavement Services Inc. Now Has Milling CapabilitiesBy Jeff WinkeSPECIAL TO CEG

Since its inception in 1985, U.S.Pavement Services Inc., Woburn,Mass., has experienced significantbusiness milestones that occurred atten-year intervals. At first, Mike Musto, the

founder/owner, focused on asphaltpavement sealcoating. His businessof applying sealcoating grew byhelping customers to prevent asphaltcracks, imperfections and the prema-ture asphalt repairs. In 1995, U.S.Pavement added asphalt paving to itsservices, leading to a move intoheavier paving work. In 2005, thecompany created a network of otherpaving companies to provide partici-pants with a powerful marketing toolas well as greater business depth and buyingpower. Collectively there are currently 220members, representing more than 4,000employees and combined sales of approxi-mately $850 million. The most recent milestone came in 2015

with the company’s addition of milling to itsmenu of services. With the addition ofmilling in-house, the company estimates itwill increase its bottom-line significantlyand provide 25- to 35-percent more capacityin production. “Adding milling capabilities, makes good

logistical and economic sense,” said AndrewMusto, chief operating officer with U.S.Pavement Services. “We keep all services inhouse and we’re not dependent on a subcon-tractor’s availability or schedule.”The addition of asphalt milling has helped

U.S. Pavement to be more competitive. With135 employees at peak season, the companyis considered to be mid-size in its market.

U.S. Pavement won the bid to refurbish theparking lot surfaces for five Target stores inthe Boston metro area — a $2.25 millionproject. The Somerville, Mass., Target location

was the first location of the contract the con-tractor tackled. The busy store opens daily at8:00 a.m. and closes at 11:00 p.m., exceptSaturdays, when it remains open an extrahour, closing at midnight.“We were given a two-week schedule to

mill and pave 11,200 sq. yds. of parking sur-face,” said Bill Garvey, director of construc-tion with U.S. Pavement Services. “We cre-ated a strict production schedule to completethe project in four phases, making sure wedid not impede customer access to the store. We did not want to be the cause of anydecline in their daily sales.”Most of the asphalt parking-surface

requires 2 in. (5 cm) depth milling, whileapproximately 10-percent of the project

requires full-depth 4 in. (10 cm) milling. Themilling was performed with U.S. PavementServices’ new Roadtec RX-600e half-lanecold planer. Roadtec New England sales rep-resentative Rick Pare helped the company inselecting the 600 hp, four-track millingmachine, which they first saw at the Worldof Asphalt industry trade show.“It was easy to switch the Roadtec

machine from two-inch to full-depthmilling,” said Garvey. “There was no hesita-tion or adjusting, which is good because wecan maintain our tight schedule.”The worn asphalt and binder was

removed and trucked off site. Most of the oldasphalt is being converted to RAP(reclaimed asphalt product). The challenge for the three-man milling

crew was to quickly complete its task in eachproduction phase so that asphalt-pavingcrew could follow. “The milling results needed to be on grade

and high quality because we couldn’tafford any extra time for rework,”Garvey said. “Because we needed tocomplete the Somerville lot in foursections in order to keep the store’scustomers happy, we realized howbeneficial it is to have milling inhouse and under our control.”Musto estimated that the costs of

the milling portion of the SomervilleTarget parking lot rehab would be20-percent higher if they had sub-contracted the milling like they usedto do. Additionally, “it would havebeen a scheduling headache with thesub because of the mill-pave-mill-pave production flow we needed toaccommodate the store and its cus-tomers.”U.S. Pavement Services attributes

much of the ease in which it hasadopted asphalt milling as a new, profitableservice to several things:• Brand new equipment, which has tech-

nology making it easy to learn and operate.• Attentive training and support from the

equipment manufacturer and its field rep.• The Roadtec RX-600e controls are

referred to as simplified controls designed tobe operated with one hand from either sideof the platform.“I’ll remember the Somerville Target

project as being a great well-oiled machinewith our crews milling and paving simulta-neously and shoppers coming in and leavingthe store without a problem,” Musto reflect-ed. “It was like watching a championshipteam execute that perfect, game-winningplay.”

Rhode Island DOT to Create Three New High-Paying Jobs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Public con-cerns are being raised about the RhodeIsland Department of Transportation’s pro-posal to create three high-paying jobs as partof a reorganization plan.

Grant Dugarian, the owner of aProvidence clothing business, called it “trou-bling” that DOT was seeking to create chiefof staff, communications director and policydirector positions. Two of the jobs could payas much as $112,643 a year, while the chiefof staff position could pay as much as$131,715 annually.

The Providence Journal

(http://bit.ly/1QD6sI8) reported Dugarianquestioned the cost at a public hearing heldFriday.

A number of former DOT employeeshave played the role of chief of staff, buttheir titles did not exactly match.

Gov. Gina Raimondo announced in lateSeptember an overhaul of the state’s trans-portation bureaucracy, which she called“dysfunctional.”
