ON JANUARY 10TH, U.S. News & World Report released its “2017 Best Online Programs” and ranked New England Institute of Technology No. 8 out of more than 225 colleges and universities across the United States for its online Bachelor of Science degree programs. This guide is a resource used by millions of domestic and international students to compare the academic quality and value of bachelor’s and master’s level online degree programs offered throughout the country. The U.S. News Best Online Programs report is used by students and working adults seeking online education programs to complete their degrees or advance their careers while maintaining a flexible schedule that suits their work and personal com- mitments. Rankings are based on factors such as graduation rates, indebtedness of new graduates and aca- demic and career support services and may be viewed at http://www.usnews.com/ education/online-education/ bachelors. To be considered in the bachelor-level rankings, only degree-granting programs of- fered predominately online at regionally accredited colleges and universi- ties are reviewed. The various methodologies used are based on such factors as faculty credentials and training, student services and technology, and peer reputation. Meth- odologies may be found at http://www.us- news.com/education/best-colleges/articles/ rankings-methodologies. U.S. News & World Re- port states, “The vast major- ity of students enrolled in these ranked programs have earned at least some college credit. They are more likely to be working professionals in their 20s to 40s looking to advance in or change their careers than be first-time college students. U.S. News & World Report chose factors that weigh how these programs are being delivered and their effectiveness at award- ing affordable degrees in a reasonable amount of time.” Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, Senior Vice President and Provost stated, “New England Tech follows a very innovative process for the development of all online courses that results in engaging and collaborative online learning environments. Together, our out- standing faculty and instructional designers use this innovative process in each of our unique online programs. We couldn’t be more proud to receive this important rank- ing from such a well-respected publication.” To learn more about NEIT’s online de- gree programs call the Admissions Office at 800-736-7744 or email NEITAdmissions@ neit.edu. THE NEW ENGLAND TECh Rotaract Club and the Interact Club of Rocky Hill School located in East Greenwich, RI, joined forces on Thursday, January 12th at NEIT’s East Greenwich campus to assemble fifteen 3D printed prosthetic hands that will ultimately be used by amputee children through the Enable Community Foundation. The non-profit foundation connects with schools to help produce prosthetic hands on a 3D printer. An additional five prosthetic hands will be shipped unassembled to the Interact Club in Rwanda where they will be assembled and distributed within their community. Rocky Hill School’s Interact Community Service Club first aligned with Enable Community Foundation to help produce the 3D printed hands. The hands are assembled by students and ultimately distributed to amputee children in need throughout the world. The “raptor” hands give the children the ability to grip items that dramatically changes their circumstance. The Interact Club and the Rotaract Club are sponsored by the East Greenwich Rotary’s New Generations program. Instructors and students in New England Tech’s Mechanical Engineering Technology Department printed the prosthetic hand parts. Using an Objet 30 Prime Polyjet 3D printer with RGD720 Full Cure material, all of the hand parts were printed in a process that took nearly 20 hours and cost approximately $50 in materials per hand. The East Greenwich Rotary donated $750 towards the printing costs and secured a matching donation of $750 from a Rotary District grant. The Rocky Hill students obtained the hard- ware needed to assemble the hands and raised more than $1,000 to sponsor those costs. Students from New England Tech and Rocky Hill School as well as members of the East Greenwich Rotary came together on January 12th to tour NEIT’s Mechanical Engineering Lab where the 3D hands were printed and to assemble the hands and prepare them for shipment. The East Greenwich Rotary New Generations program focuses on engaging students in community service and teaching them about Rotary initiatives. A Message fromPresident

Richard I. GouseGreetings to all. We have much to be proud of as we begin 2017!

New England Institute of Technol-ogy was ranked #8 nationally by U.S. News and World Report for our online Bachelor of Science degree programs in its “2017 Best Online Programs”, a highly credible resource used by mil-lions of students worldwide to compare academic programs. NEIT’s knowl-edgeable faculty collaborating with our experienced instructional designers has resulted in this prestigious recognition.

We were also pleased to learn that New England Institute of Technology has been granted general authority to offer master-level degree programs by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). In the past NEIT was required to submit each of our Master of Science degree programs individually to NEASC for approval. This newly granted authority allows the university to offer additional master’s level programs without prior NEASC approval based on our past exemplary program submissions.

In addition, New England Tech has established a new College of Graduate and Professional Studies that incor-porates our Master of Science degree programs and specialized professional Bachelor of Science degree programs into a separate and distinct unit. These online/hybrid degree programs offer a flexible curriculum to meet the demands of our students’ professional and per-sonal commitments.

Lastly, a new initiative is now avail-able for students to earn scholarships for their academic and extracurricular achievements while in high school through NEIT’s partnership with Raise.me, an online program developed to help students be better prepared for college. New England Tech is the first institution of higher learning in Rhode Island to participate in Raise.me, and we are eager to begin working with students as early as the ninth grade to achieve their educational goals.

The dedication of New England Tech’s administration, faculty, staff and students all contribute to the continued success of our great university.

NEIT’s QualITy sErvIcE sTaTEMENTQuali ty ser vice for s tudents , employees, and customers at New England Institute of Technology is knowledgeable and informed employees working as a team to provide more assistance and information than expected in a caring and professional manner in order to empower the students to achieve their goals.

the college of graduate aNd ProfessIoNal studIes (GPS) has been established at New England Tech under the direction of Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, Senior Vice President and Provost. The mission of GPS is to provide multidisciplinary graduate and professional degree programs to individuals from diverse educational and experiential backgrounds to advance in their careers.

The College of Graduate and Professional Studies implements in-novative teaching practices that incorporate NEIT’s tradition of providing practical learning with flexible programs that accom-modate students’ work and personal schedules. Programs are offered in one of three ways: on-ground (traditional classroom); on-line; or hybrid (a combination of on-ground and on-line). All GPS programs offer 24/7 technical support, easy-to-use technology and access to faculty, student advising, and the New England Tech library.

NEIT’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies cur-rently offers four Master’s degree programs in Information Technology, Occupational Therapy, Construction Management and Public Health; and four Bachelor’s degree programs in Nurs-ing, Criminal Justice, Rehabilitation Sciences and Automotive Service Management.

Dr. Sherman stated, “The demand for on-line and hybrid degree programs at the bachelor and master degree level is rapidly evolving and will continue to grow. The schedules of today’s non-traditional students have become more demanding

and traditional on-ground programs do not always meet their needs. By establishing the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, New England Tech stands ready to assist these students as they continue their journey to an advanced degree and growth in their chosen professions.”

New eNglaNd INstItute of Technology has earned the 2017 Military Friendly® School designation by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs®, Military Spouse and other related military publications. First published in 2009, Military Friendly® Schools is the most comprehensive, powerful resource used by veterans to assist them in selecting the best college or university to receive the education and training they need to pursue a civilian career.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,700 schools participated in the 2017 survey; 1,273 were awarded the designation. Ratings methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Victory

Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores

with the assessment of the institu-tion’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Gradua-tion, Job Search Assistance, Loan Repayment, Persistence and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

Daniel Nichols, a Navy Reserve veteran and Chief Product Officer

at Victory Media, stated, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly®

helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assist-ing them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”

Many employers contact the Career Services Office at New England Institute of Technology seeking graduates for job op-portunities. Patricia Blakemore, Director of Career Services stated, “Our military students and graduates are highly prepared for the job market through the education they receive at New England Tech coupled with their military training. These individuals are one of the most sought after group of candidates by prospec-tive employers.”

New eNglaNd INstItute of Technology is the first university in Rhode Island to offer scholarships through Raise.me, an online social enterprise focused on expanding ac-cess to higher education, especially amongst first-generation and low-income students. The program was developed to better prepare high school students for college success.

This innovative scholarship program moti-vates students to achieve academic excellence while in high school. Starting as early as 9th grade, students can now earn “micro-scholar-ship” awards at New England Tech for their academic achievements and extracurricular activities. Students track specific goals they seek to accomplish throughout high school, helping them become more competitive college applicants and more successful college stu-dents. The “micro-scholarships” will focus on the following classifications: science, technol-ogy, engineering and math courses; community service hours; and honors and awards. Raise.me also provides access to financial aid options.

“Students in the Northeast have continued to express interest in having Rhode Island higher education options on Raise.me,” said Katie Mooney, Raise.me’s Director of Partnerships in the Northeast. “New England Institute of Technology was a natural place to start given their focus on access, affordability and student success.”

Raise.me has partnered with a diverse set of more than 200 colleges and universities including Carnegie Mellon, Colby College, Georgia Tech, Penn State, the University of Rochester and Tulane University. Raise.me is free for students and also provides a free portal for high school counselors to help students track their progress.

Students, educators, and parents can learn more at www.raise.me, by visiting the New England Tech website at www.raise.me/join/neit or by contacting NEIT’s Director of Ad-missions, Michael Caruso, at 800-736-7744 or [email protected].

tion, and being determined to succeed. These traits have served me well in both endeavors.

Do you have any advice for graduates who are just beginning their job search?

A job search is a job in and of itself. Get up every day and make phone calls, fill out appli-cations and make use of any contacts that offer to help in your search. You don’t have to wait for a “perfect” opportunity. Any opportunity can be made perfect if you work hard. What can current students do to better prepare themselves for jobs in this field?

It is important to really apply yourself in the lab. Learn how to use your multi-meter and to understand what it is telling you. Never pass up a chance to take apart an air conditioner, furnace or boiler. Whatever you can find, open it up and figure out how it works. Be sure to ask many questions.

east greeNwIch hIgh school’s first cybersecurity team, the Und3f1ned Avengers, has clinched the #1 spot out of more than 20 Rhode Island teams in the CyberPatriot IX Cybersecurity Challenge through the guidance of NEIT’s Information Technology Assistant Professor, Jesse Roberts, a cybersecurity specialist. Mr. Roberts and this dedicated high school team worked countless hours for more than four months which resulted in the team winning the coveted first place spot during the online state finals held in January.

CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program sponsored by the independent Air Force Association. At the center of CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, during which teams of high school and middle school students become newly hired IT professionals and must manage the network of a small company. Teams are given a set of virtual im-ages that represent operating systems and are tasked with finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the images and hardening the system while maintaining critical services in a six hour period. Teams compete for the top placement within their state and region. The top teams in the nation earn all-expense paid trips to Baltimore for the National Finals Competition where they can earn national recognition and scholarship money.

East Greenwich High School’s Und3f1ned Avengers, Sam Delong, Anthony Agatiello, Bryce Ingram and Conor Mason, scored in the top 20% against more than 4,400 teams. They rank in the top 14% of the Northeast region and first in the top division in Rhode Island.

“These students are extraordinarily talented, says Roberts. “It was encouraging to see them so interested in cybersecurity given the current state of affairs within the industry and throughout the world. This competition is such an innovative way to get students involved in this rapidly growing, ever changing field.”

The Northeast regional-level round took place February 3-5 and teams placing in this competition advance to the national finals being held in Baltimore in April.

NEIT Assistant Professor Jesse Roberts looks on as East Green-wich High School students troubleshoot cybersecurity issues.

oN december 4, 2016, Senior Vice President and Provost, Dr. Douglas H. Sherman awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500 to more than 80 outstand-ing New England Tech students for their academic achievements. The awards consisted of scholarships established either by the generosity of numerous donors including the NEIT Alumni Association, specific NEIT departments, several trade organizations, or as memorial

scholarships to honor a friend, staff member, or faculty member of the university.

Students had the opportunity to meet and person-ally thank many of the donors who participated in the awards presentation for their generosity. Following the ceremony, family, friends and honored guests were in-vited to a reception to celebrate this important occasion. Congratulations to the following students:Dress for

Success! In addition to writing re-sumes, compiling references, and crafting effective cover letters, students need to look the part of aspiring professionals every time they interview. Business Man-agement Technology (MGT) students, Amaryha Bryan and Herland Campos, are dressed for success and ready for mock employment interviews held during a formal brunch at New England Tech. Man-agement professionals from the community as well as from NEIT participated in the event, which allowed students to practice their interview skills.

NEIT Partners with Electric Boat and Real Jobs RI

On nOvember 30, 2016, five employees from Electric Boat‘s (EB) Quonset facility completed a 120-hour robotic welding training program at New Eng-land Tech’s Access Rd campus in Warwick, RI, sponsored by the state’s Real Jobs RI initiative. Real Jobs RI is a demand-driven workforce and economic development initiative that is collaborative, flexible and business-led and is designed to ensure that Rhode Island employers have the talent they need to compete and grow while providing targeted education and skills training for Rhode Island workers.

This training program was the first Electric Boat Real Jobs RI sponsored robotic welding training where EB employees participated in enhanced training developed and provided by New England Tech. Participants were exposed to the basics of automation and practical lab operations utilizing NEIT’s Fanuc robots and the WolfPac welding robot. The WolfPac is the same robotic welding system used at EB’s Quonset facility.

The course was a collaborative effort developed and taught by a team of instructors from NEIT with on-site technical assistance provided by Electric Boat supervisors from its Quonset Robotic Welding division. Fred Santa-niello, Director of Workforce Development Grants and Programs at New England Tech’s Center for Technology and Industry, coordinated the robotic welding program development and delivery. Dean Plowman, Department Chair of NEIT’s Mechanical Engineering (MCT) Department, supervised the instructional effort with classes taught by MCT instructors Dave Turner and Mike Eggeman as well as Matt Topper, Coordinator of the SAMI weld-ing program. Electric Boat staff members provided excellent technical assistance to both the instructors and students throughout the training. The participants each earned seven college credits upon completion of the five week, full time program.

New England Tech looks forward to future training programs with Electric Boat and Real Jobs RI.
