    FIRST 5 MLS MATCHES IN 2019 (0-0-1)

    MLS SCHEDULE - WEEK 2

THAT’S WHAT THEY SAIDHere is what Revolution Head Coach Brad Friedel, midfielder Scott Caldwell, and goalkeeper Brad Knighton had to say ahead of Saturday's home opener vs. Columbus Crew SC. For complete video soundbytes and transcripts, please contact the Revolution communications staff at [email protected] or visit www.revolutionsoccer.net/media.

New England Revolution Head Coach Brad FriedelOn his takeaways from Saturday's draw against FC Dallas:Coach Friedel: “I was pleased – first game of the season, away from home. Quite happy with the weather in Dallas, to be honest with you, instead of playing there in the summer. I thought the second-half performance was pretty solid. When we’re looking at where they had possession, they had 600-some odd passes, most of which were in their half of the field and that doesn’t bother us, especially when we’re playing away from home. Other than maybe the first 15 minutes, I thought we were decent and worthy to come out with at least a point.”

    -----

New England Revolution Midfielder Scott CaldwellOn what he expects to see from Columbus under Caleb Porter: Caldwell: “He likes to play with the ball on the ground. Their transition from defense to offense and offense to defense is very valuable to him. They like to really put pressure in your face as soon as they lose the ball to try and get another quick attack. All of those things, in addition to some more, he really likes to instill in his team, so we’re looking forward to play-ing them at home in front of our fans and getting the win.”

    -----

New England Revolution Goalkeeper Brad KnightonOn facing Columbus this weekend: Knighton: "I think they’re going to play similar to how they’ve played in previous years with a few tinkerings here and there, but Caleb’s [Porter] going to bring his team ready to play. We know that and we’ve just got to be up for a test between two Eastern Conference teams.”

    INJURY REPORTOUT: Andrew Farrell (Eye)

PROBABLE: Juan Fernando Caicedo (Muscle Injury)

  • NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION VS. COLUMBUS CREW SC: SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 2019

On Oct. 15, 2018, the New England Revolution broke ground on the Revo-lution Training Center, a world-class facility that will be the center of the Revolution first team and Academy operations.  Integrated into the wet-lands surrounding Gillette Stadium, the Revolution Training Center will feature state-of-the-art fitness and medical centers, six professional-grade fields, team dining and lounge spaces, and office space for the club's technical staff and front office, among other amenities.

The privately-financed, $35-million project will give the New England Rev-olution one of the most advanced and expansive team facilities in Major League Soccer. The center will span 68 acres with 42,000 square feet of buildings and three new full-size fields – two natural grass surfaces and one turf pitch. With the club’s existing training field, Gillette Stadium, and the Empower Field House, upon completion the club will boast a total of six professional-grade fields. The existing natural grass field on the site will be dedicated for use by the Revolution Academy.

In addition to cutting-edge amenities for the first team, which also include an on-site barbershop for the first team, the Revolution's training facility will house members of the front office and technical staff. The complex will feature office space, multiple conference rooms, and a state-of-the-art in-house media studio.

Construction began with the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, Oct. 15, and completion is scheduled for the summer of 2019. The two natural grass surfaces, both dedicated for first team use, are expected to open in the spring.

Since taking the reins of the Revolution as head coach in Nov. 2017, Head Coach Brad Friedel and General Manager Michael Burns have overhauled the team's roster in an effort to propel the team back into cup contention. Last year, Friedel brought a slate of difference makers into the fold, in-cluding JetBlue Team MVP Cristian Penilla, midfield staple Luis Caicedo, and 2018 MLS All-Star Wilfried Zahibo, among others.

The roster reshaping continued into the 2018-19 offseason, beginning with the club exercising permanent transfer options on Penilla and Caice-do. 'GIL YEAH!': CARLES SCORES IN MLS DEBUT IN DALLAS

  • NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION VS. COLUMBUS CREW SC: SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 2019

    TEAM NOTES

On Dec. 18, the Revolution acquired left back Edgar Castillo in a trade with the Colorado Rapids in exchange for midfielder Kelyn Rowe. Castillo, 32, brings over 12 years of experience to the Revolution, including 11 profes-sional seasons and multiple championships in Mexico's Liga MX, as well as one season in MLS with the Rapids. His overall career totals include more than 370 appearances with 13 goals and 16 assists across more than 29,000 minutes played. Castillo played 90 minutes in his Revs debut on March 2 at FC Dallas.

The Las Cruces, New Mexico native began his senior career with Santos Laguna in 2006. After winning a championship with Santos in 2008, Castillo departed for Club América. During subsequent loan stints with Tigres UANL (2009-10), San Luis FC (2010), and Puebla FC (2011), he totaled 49 appear-ances and four goals. Castillo then joined Club Tijuana, first on loan before a permanent transfer, where he appeared in 94 games across more than 7,800 minutes. He also spent time with Atlas Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Castillo is a dual citizen of Mexico and the United States and is one of only two players ever to earn senior caps from both nations. He began his inter-national career by playing three senior games for Mexico, debuting against Colombia in August 2007, before making the one-time switch permitted by FIFA to represent the United States in 2009. Since joining the American side, Castillo has earned 18 caps, including six in both 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification, and recorded three assists. He also helped the US-MNT clinch the Concacaf Gold Cup title in 2013.

CASTILLO POISED TO PROVIDE STABILITY AT LEFT BACK

After joining the Revolution during last summer's secondary transfer win-dow, defener Michael Mancienne is settled in and prepared to anchor New England's back line heading into the 2019 campaign. The beginning of his 2019 season was delayed due to a pre-match injury suffered in warmups on March 2 at FC Dallas, but the London native quickly returned to the train-ing pitch and is poised to solidify the Revs' defense.

Mancienne, who arrived in Aug. 2018 on a free transfer from EFL Cham-pionship side Nottingham Forest F.C., started 10 games after joining the Revolution. Now with a full offseason under his belt, the Englishman is prepared to anchor the club's back line. Mancienne wore the captain's armband throughout New England's preseason, channeling his experience across Europe's top flight to organize and guide the Revs both on and off the field.

A former England youth international and graduate of Chelsea's youth sys-tem with 99 combined career appearaces in the English Premier League and German Bundesliga, Mancienne's professional experience includes more than 320 senior appearances and 25,000 minutes played across Europe with Chelsea (2006-11), Queens Park Rangers (2006-08), Wolver-hampton (2008-11), Hamburger SV (2011-14), and Forest (2014-18).

MANCIENNE PRIMED TO ANCHOR NEW ENGLAND'S BACK LINE

On Nov. 2, 2018, the Revolution exercised permanent MLS transfer options on forward Cristian Penilla and midfielder Luis Caicedo following their year-long loans from Liga MX side Pachuca and Colombian club Cortuluá, respectively.

Penilla, 27, started 33 gam es for the Revolution in 2018. The Ecuadorian attacker scored a team-best 12 goals for New England, which tied for the third most among all MLS newcomers in 2018. He also added seven assists and paced New England in shot attempts (95) and shots on goal (38). In ad-dition to winning the club’s Golden Boot, Penilla’s debut season earned him a number of club honors, including the 2018 JetBlue Team MVP Award as voted on by fans. He was also recognized by his teammates as the Players’ Player of the Year, and honored by supporters as the Midnight Riders’ Man of the Year.

Caicedo, 22, spent the 2018 season on loan with New England from Cat-egoría Primera B side Cortuluá in his native Colombia. He totaled 30 ap-pearances, including 29 starts, with one goal and four assists, while his 2,590 minutes of action ranked fifth on the Revolution.  After joining the club in March 2018, the defensive midfielder played all 90 minutes in 27 of his 29 starts, including 16 consecutive starts from March 31 through July 14.

REVS EXERCISE PERMANENT TRANSFERS ON PENILLA & CAICEDO

The Revolution signed two Academy products to Homegrown Player con-tracts this offseason, adding midfielder Nicolas Firmino (signed Nov. 27, 2018) and forward Justin Rennicks (signed Jan. 18, 2019).

Firmino, 18, a resident of Somerville, Mass. and native of Mantena, Brazil, joined the Revolution Academy at the Under-14 level before the 2014 fall season. In more than four seasons with the Academy, the Brazilian attack-ing midfielder, who has also gone by the name Elio, scored over 35 goals in more than 90 appearances. He contributed at four different age groups during his Academy tenure, debuting with the U-14s before stints at the then-U-16, U-17, and U-19 levels.

Rennicks, 19, emerged as one of the Revolution Academy's most produc-tive players upon joining the program at the Under-14 level ahead of the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season. The forward gradu-ated from the Academy with 38 goals and 25 assists in more than 100 appearances across the U-14, U-16, and U-18 levels. He was named the UnitedHealthcare Academy Player of the Year in 2015 and 2016, becoming the first and only player to win the award twice. The South Hamilton, Mass. native then spent two years at Indiana University after playing five years in the Revolution Academy. He was available on the bench for New England's opening match at FC Dallas on March 2.

New England now rosters six Homegrown Players in total, three of whom have joined the squad during Brad Friedel's tenure as head coach. In ad-dition to Firmino and Rennicks, the club also has local products Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.), Scott Caldwell (Braintree, Mass.), Zachary Herivaux (Brookline, Mass.), and Isaac Angking (Providence, R.I.) on the first team.

REVS ADD FIRMINO, RENNICKS AS HOMEGROWN PLAYERS

  • NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION VS. COLUMBUS CREW SC: SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 2019

    TEAM NOTES

On Dec. 20, 2018, the Revs acquired forward Juan Fernando Caicedo on loan from Colombian side Independiente Medellín for the 2019 season with a permanent transfer option. Caicedo, 29, has scored 89 goals in nearly 300 appearances across all competitions through nine professional seasons in the top divisions of Colombia and Argentina. The striker is targeting his MLS debut soon as he was sidelined for the season opener at FC Dallas with a minor muscle injury.

Caicedo joins the Revolution from Independiente Medellín, a marquee Co-lombian Categoría Primera A side, where he scored 42 goals across 150 league appearances. The forward paced Independiente with 17 league goals in 2015, his most productive campaign as a professional. He also eclipsed the double-digit scoring mark in 2018 with 11 goals for El Rojo Paisa. He helped Independiente claim a 2016 Apertura title, as well as run-ner-up finishes in the 2015 Apertura campaign, the 2017 Copa Colombia, and the 2017 Superliga Colombiana.

JUAN FERNANDO CAICEDO BOLSTERS OUTLOOK FOR REVS ATTACK

The Revolution made a pair of selections in the first round of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft in Chicago on Jan. 11, adding Syracuse University forward Tajon Buchanan with the ninth-overall pick and Michigan State midfielder DeJuan Jones with the 11th-overall pick. Both players were available on the bench during the March 2 season opener at FC Dallas.

Buchanan, 20, was an important member of Syracuse University’s attack for two years and signed a Generation adidas contract after his sophomore season. In his collegiate career, the Brampton, Ontario native appeared and started in 33 matches, tallying 12 goals with six assists. As a sophomore last season, Buchanan started 15 matches and recorded a career-high eight goals.

Jones, 21, registered 16 goals and 14 assists across 75 total appearances for Michigan State. The five-foot-nine forward earned second-team All-Big 10 Conference recognition in back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018. Jones emerged as a regular starter for Michigan State in 2017, and submit-ted single-season career highs in both goals (seven) and assists (six). The Lansing, Mich. native helped lead Michigan State to the 2018 College Cup Semifinal as well as the 2017 College Cup Elite Eight. Jones signed a con-tract with the Revolution on Feb. 25, 2019 following the team’s preseason trips to Spain and Florida.

NEW ENGLAND ADDS BUCHANAN, JONES IN 2019 SUPERDRAFT

After a competitive preseason battle for the starting goalkeeper position, veteran goalkeeper Brad Knighton started and played 90 minutes in the Revs' 1-1 draw in Dallas on March 2 to open the 2019 campaign. It marked the first time in his MLS career that he started a season-opening match.

Knighton, now in his 12th MLS season, made two saves in the team's first road test of the season. Knigton has tallied 222 saves, 13 shutouts, and holds a Goals Against Average of 1.50 in his career. The 34-year-old North Carolina native is in his second stint with the Revs, after previously spend-ing time with both Philadelphia (2010) and Vancouver (2012-13) and holds 67 collective games of experience in net.

Last January, Knighton was incudcted into the UNC-Wilmington Athletic Hall of Fame after spending time with the Seahawks under former Revolution goal-keeper Aidan Healey. Knighton holds the program record of 25 shutouts.

REVS CONFIDE IN VETERAN BRAD KNIGHTON IN NET

When the Revolution host Columbus Crew SC on March 9 at Gillette Sta-dium in the 2019 home opener, they will look to extend an active unbeaten streak in home debuts to 13 games, with a 7-0-5 record in the last 12 since 2007.

Last season, the Revs hosted the Colorado Rapids at Gillette Stadium in a chilly test on March 10 and came out victorious in a 2-1 battle, thanks to a late Chris Tierney free-kick goal in stoppage time. Diego Fagundez scored the game's opening goal in the 48th minute off of Cristian Penilla's first assist in a Revs uniform.

The Revs have taken all six points in the last two home openers, including in 2017 when the Revolution thrashed MLS newcomers Minnesota United in a 5-2 victory in front of the home supporters.

The last time the Revs lost in a home opener came in a 2-1 loss against the Chicago Fire on April 30, 2006. Taylor Twellman scored the team's lone goal in the 54th minute before the Fire retaliated with two goals to hand New England their second loss of the year.
