We look forward to seeing old friends and welcoming new visitors to The New English. The excitement of seeing paintings by members and non-members coming into the gallery as I write in early October will be multiplied many times as we negotiate the process of hanging the exhibition, looking for connections between paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints to make a coherent show.

Paintings on the walls of a room talk to each other. A single painting on a wall might draw your eye but add another, and another and a sort of alchemy happens where you begin to see resonances between the individual works that give them all a new vibrancy.

There has never been a better opportunity than now to start a collection of New English painters. I have asked our artist members to each give us a smaller, more affordable, work to hang in this year’s show and these are a feature of the exhibition. Whether you are considering buying your first painting or looking for something to squeeze into a house full of pictures you will find it here.

Next year sees us move our exhibition from its November ‘slot’ to early summer with the New English coming to Mall Galleries in June.

We are honoured and delighted that HRH The Prince of Wales has extended his Patronage of The New English Art Club for a further five years. We would also like to thank our New English Friends, The Companions of the New English, our sponsors and those who have so generously given prizes for their support of this exhibition.

The Scholarship Year 2014

By Mick Kirkbride

This is my first year as the new curator of the NEAC Drawing School. It has proved a stimulating and rewarding experience to be the fulcrum of such an energised and creative facility, which has been given fresh impetus, with a renewed sense of purpose and direction by my predecessor Charles Williams. I have over recent months attempted to continue in a similar spirit, upholding the same core value, that of observational drawing. Not merely skill based mimetic drawing, but one in which opportunities to speculate and explore are maximised.

To this end the drawing year began with a three day figure based workshop at the Mall, followed by summer location drawing in and around the King’s Cross basin area. In late summer the Squares of London’s Soho district became a source of subject matter. In both instances the resulting images informed further works completed back at the Mall’s Learning Centre, which has become the Drawing School’s base and is the venue for our weekly life drawing

classes during term time. The year concluded with another three day Life Drawing workshop at Putney School of Art in early September.

One of the unique elements of the Drawing School is its scholarship scheme. There were two recipients again this year, Michael Weller and Annelise Firth, both of whom gained unlimited free attendance to all classes and workshops throughout the year. Moreover they were encouraged to visit members in their studio environments, giving a direct insight into an array of creative sensibilities and working methodologies. All teaching within the school is delivered by members who through their own painting practice bring a genuine authority and personal gravitas to all our classes. I would therefore like to thank the following members for their unique insight and teaching contributions during the year – Alex Fowler, Melissa Scott-Miller, Louise Balaam, Paul Newland, Peter Clossick, Julie Jackson and Charles Williams.

Through the construct of the Drawing School our two scholars have enthusiastically immersed themselves in a frenzy of image making. Both have sought to consolidate their painting practice, but also to establish intelligible links between gesture with the brush and the drawn mark. Michael Weller’s reductive paintings have found equivalents in a more laconic expression of tone and form in his drawings. His innate sense of design and undoubted compositional acumen give his work a quiet authority. Annelise on the other hand is naturally inclined towards a more expressive use of media. Yet as the year unfolded she has cultivated a focussed and coherent use of line as a primary tool in her drawing and is now more concerned with looking rather than scanning. I think both artists demonstrate a positive response to their experience, filtering through all the advice and the various teaching mantras, they had to maintain above all a sense of themselves as artists. I think the qualities of their outcomes in the exhibition are testimony to this.

The New English Art Club 2014

In this year as a New English Art Club scholar the artists have been incredibly generous, allowing me to spend time in their studios and houses. The value of visiting the NEAC studios has been enormous and I have learnt from it a self discipline and structure for my drawing. Simply put by Saied Dai, “Observation is key because observation leads to insight; you are making a selection so that you are not copying”and Melvyn Petterson offered a similar viewpoint: “Less drawing and more looking.”

I have been given huge hospitality by the NEAC artists. Seeing and sharing

in their studios has not only been enjoyable, but has also impressed on me the importance of discipline in order to create real work. I have been exploring watercolour, pastel, as well as graphite and charcoal in the classes and

workshops at Mall Galleries, with huge encouragement from, and discussion with, the NEAC tutors. Portraying and investigating the landscape of the figure has been an important part of this scholarship. It has influenced and fed into my own work at home. I have been learning to represent this interest through translating the discipline of drawing through to the painted mark. This goal has become my work in progress.

Through discussions at the workshops, I have been helped to rein in my expressive side and become more ordered in making and presenting

my material. I feel that meeting and working with such generous artists has been a great benefit to me and has opened up new avenues of exploration in my own artwork. Also through the drawing process I have been developing ideas and engaging with the different ways of seeing.Participating in this drawing scholarship during the past year has allowed my confidence to grow. The studio visits and sharing so many perspectives on art has gradually increased my own sense of artist self. Most importantly, for me it has been about learning, absorbing and reflecting about art – a true education.

I would like to thank the following artists who, so kindly, allowed me into their studios and those who have tutored and mentored me: Michael Kirkbride, Melissa Scott-Miller, Saied Dai, Ken Howard, William Bowyer, Jason Bowyer, Tom Coates, Louise Balaam, Alex Fowler, Peter Clossick, Paul Newland, Arthur Neal, Charles Williams, Melvyn Petterson, Mary Jackson, Charlotte Sorapore, David Parfitt, Toby Ward, Julie Jackson, Richard Bawden, and Patrick Cullen.

The New English Art Club 2014

I’m never bored when I carry my sketchbook with me, and I carry my sketchbook with me all the time. Usually, I draw people.

The year started with the theme of the figure in the landscape - life-drawing in the main space of Mall Galleries. Paul Newland got us to draw tonally, from the edges of the picture to the space around the model. Many in the New English Art Club place one colour next to another, establishing boundaries

by edging areas together. Then the colours are right. I thought about that for most of the year. But I liked lines as well and wanted to keep them. “How do you know where to put the paint?” I asked Paul. He said he just knew.In other workshops, we drew outside. We tried new subjects – an outdoor market, a train station – and

views I’d forgotten I liked, like trees hanging over the Serpentine. The next day, in the Mall Galleries Learning Centre, we developed the drawings, reflecting on all that information gathered. I must have looked stumped, as Charles Williams told me to turn my sketch upside down as a way of seeing the big shapes. It helped.

The core part of the year was Tuesday evening in the Learning Centre, life-

drawing with Melissa Scott-Miller, Peter Clossick, Alex Fowler and Mick Kirkbride – a discipline, slowing down, going back and getting the right shapes. I preferred to draw with paint but they didn’t mind. Smiling, one tutor suggested I set my easel straight, not leaning to one side, and turn my palette the other way round. Peter Clossick talked about one tone or value that stays the same, like a key.

The scholarship enabled me to visit the studios of NEAC members, seeing larger paintings in progress and smaller studies. Turning sketchbook pages – a self-portrait in biro, a pencil study of an old girlfriend, parents reading. We brought the artists our pictures. It felt like a good conversation. My favourite part of the year.

As for the future, they all said – particularly my mentor, Mick Kirkbride – have ambition for your work. Push it a bit further. I like to think there is greater clarity in the drawing, and the colours are cleaner. In some paintings, on the beach, in the park, figures start to emerge.
