  • The "Batman" soundtrack album did very well commercially. It was the "only all-orchestral score to crack Billboard magazine's top-10 list of best-selling movie albums." (Burlingame 1990) Danny Elfman also composed another cave-inspired music: see under Popular Music – UK & US – Ballad of the Caveman. Other music inspired by Batman’s bat cave can be found under Rock Music – Surf – Bat Cave. • Notes: A scoring for full orchestra, which flows smoothly from one cue to another allowing the listener to hear the whole work and appreciate its different moods. All twelve cues scored for the film were given titles inspired by twelve different bat genera. To learn which key scenes in the film correspond to each cue refer to the Wikipedia entry for Batman Begins. A photo of one species in each genera will be provided and each bat music cue will be briefly described. 1. VESPERTILIO – is a genus of bats in the family Vespertillonidae, the largest and best-known family of bats

(shown below is a Vespertilio murinus) – music is somber and threatening. 2. EPTESICUS – genus includes the big brown bat (Eptesicus

fuscus) – a lyric, melancholic strain, which gathers vigor. 3. MYOTIS – Myotis californicus (California Myotis) is also known as the California Bat – starts slowly until, partway in, the orchestra picks up intensity and drive, then ends very quietly. 4. BARBASTELLA – European bat that has a short nose, small eyes and wide ears – soaring strings, ringing keyboard chords, then a stirring paced progression that reaches crescendo & fades.

Vespertilio murinus Eptesicus fuscus Myotis californicus Barbastella barbastellus

    5. ARTIBEUS – a fruit-eating bat genus. Shown below is a Jamaican Fruit-eating Bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) – stirring rise then short thrashing beats & later tapering off to string wanderings. 6. TADARIDA – the free-tailed bat genus – sturdy backup beat, streaking whooshes then up & fading whirs. 7. MACROTUS – the leaf-nosed bat genus. Below is a California Leaf-nosed Bat – slow, ominous piece 8. ANTROZOUS – The Pallid Bat (Antrozous pallidus) ranges from Western Canada to Central Mexico – strong pounding opening slips away then returns in force & fades.

Artibeus jamaicensis Tadarida brasiliensis Macrotus californicus Antrozous pallidus

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_Begins_(soundtrack)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corynorhinus_townsendii

  • 9. NYCTERIS – the Nycteris hispida (Hairy Slit-faced Bat) is an African bat – measured clacking beat brings in rapid ticking orchestral warnings with slapping whorls that lead to slight keyboard chords. 10. MOLOSSUS – Molossus molossus is a Central & South American bat from the Florida Keys to Argentina – rips into rapid upbeat challenge with horns and pounds on stronger steadily creating tension then quickly fades only to come back again, build, and go out. 11. CORYNORHINUS – American long-eared bats – keyboard gong chords intro lead to the usual stretched & somber ensemble that goes to high streaming chords then silence followed by a funky, chugging beat swelling to the orchestral coda 12. LASIURUS – the Western Red Bat is a member of this genus – lingering, mournful, & uneventful until it builds in stimulation and drifts quietly into a staccato whirling coda. Notes: Another CD album with extended score music from this film. However, sources do not say who composed or who recorded “The Cave” track on disc 1. THE CAVE – low calm intro leads to rhythmic ramblings that increase in intensity then abruptly end and pass back to the opening calm passage to fade. Judging by the running times all four bat tracks on the second CD here (Eptesicus, Macrotus, Lasiurus; and Barbastella) are exactly the same as the cues on the original soundtrack album. (Disc 1 – Tk 9 and Disc 2 – Tks 9, 10, & 13) Notes: Yet another CD album with extended score music from this film.

However, sources still do not say who composed or who recorded “Bat Cave” track on disc 1. The “Bat Cave” track, with the same running time, is probably the same as “The Cave” track on the previously listed double CD of the expanded score (see above). Judging by the running time the “Lasiurus” track seems to be the same as the cue on the original soundtrack album. The “Molossus” track is another version of this cue led by a different conductor. The “Rhinolophus” remix track has not been included on any other album and has not been heard. Perhaps it is a remix of a previously issued track. “Rhinolophids [bats] inhabit temperate and tropical regions of southern Europe, Africa, and Asia south to northern and eastern Australia. All species are insectivorous, capturing insects in flight. Their roost habits are diverse; some

species are found in large colonies in caves, some prefer hollow trees, and others sleep in the open, among the branches of trees.” (Anon. 2016) Shown here is the Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros). Apart from the “Bat Cave“ track, this CD has not been heard.

  • by a sharp stalagmite. A bat-like hybrid creature smashes into the stalactites. Someone throws a flare and the cave starts to collapse. Three survivors swim underwater to come up outside in a reservoir lake. Many of the scenes in this film give an exaggerated and distorted image of caves and caving. One rather famous American caver commented on the many comically flagrant errors and the stupid dialogue, adding “You wonder how they find their way out of the cave spring 90 miles away. As far as I can determine, they return with zero survey footage, no new critters in a bottle, no photos, no cave gear, no self-respect…” (Brucker 2005) The underwater cave diving scenes were filmed in actual underwater caves in Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Mexico. Not all these cues are cave-oriented or pertain to cave scenes in the film; those titles that are cave-related in some way are capitalized. The entire score was not auditioned; only certain 30-second audio clips were heard giving the general impression of tense, brooding, and eerie music typical of horror films in general. One critic had this to say about the album – “The majority of the 40 cues on the score album are ambient electronics, sometimes dissonant, that work well in the film to bring out a creepy sense of dread in the dark places beneath the surface. But beyond the soundscape for the underwater cave setting for the film, the score does very little else. The cues are very short and never have much chance to build into anything besides background music. The few moments when the music adds to the events on screen are times when low strings perform moving bass lines that punctuate the action on-screen (‘Team Enters the Water,’ ‘Underwater Search’ and ‘Tyler's Mission’). “The 75-minute album is way too long and makes for a very tedious listen. Some of the more interesting cues are the action material rather than the suspense cues, such as ‘Rapids’ and ‘Saving Katherine’. Some parts of the score may resurface as trailer music, ‘The Ascent’ comes to mind in particular, but generally, this score will likely be forgotten… the score CD for The Cave works for the film, but should probably did not deserve an album release.” (Brennen 2005) No attempt will be made here to describe and comment on each of the 46 cave-related cues. Another CD album associated with this film entitled, “The Cave (Soundtrack Album),” was released in 2005, but the album only has heavy metal rock songs and instrumentals that are not cave-inspired and are completely unrelated to the action of this film (see under Not Cave Music – Film). Japanese CD: CLIFFHANGER Scotti Bros. PCCY-00488 (Tk 9) Notes: The scene has Gabe and Jessie entering a fissure cave to reach the upper end of the "Tower" in the Rocky Mountains. As he climbs a chimney he touches guano. They spot the bats (Rousettes) hanging and

she says, "Let's get out of here." A few disturbed bats start to fly around. She screams. More bats peal off and all fly out of cave. With his ice axe Gabe eventually cuts his way up through ice and snow to break out onto the surface. Regarding this scene, we are told – “In the cave of bats scene, the ‘bats’ seen on screen were actually added after filming as a special effect. Real bats were brought in to fill the cave, but Sylvester Stallone and Janine Turner were too afraid to shoot the scene with live bats.” (Anon. 2016) Rousettes are tropical fruit bats and they do not live anywhere near the Rocky Mountains. The photo shows a colony of Egyptian Fruit Bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) hanging up in a cave

Menacing strings build until the tuba, trombones, and kettledrums lay on an incessant beat. Later the trumpets and strings bring in the main theme briefly and then another menacing section is followed by the trombones also performing one chorus of the main theme. • Notes: “Italian sword and sorcery epic from splatter director Lucio Fulci loosely inspired from the Hercules mythos about two warriors on a quest and a vengeful demon.” (Amador 2016) It is not known which of the several cave scenes in this film used this cue. Locations were in Sardinia, so maybe some of the caves there were used. This cue was not heard. The soundtrack of this film was released on CD in 2016 on the Rustblade label. European CD: THE SCORPION KING – THE ROCK Varèse Sarabande VSD-6368 (Tk 7) Notes: Two warriors are sent by the Akkadian king into the Desert Cataract to retrieve the prophetic book of Tehuti. There they find a cave where the floor is littered with human skulls. A many-headed cave beast attacks, but they succeed in killing it with swords and arrows. In a wall niche they find the book of H, which “could turn a king into not just the

ruler of all men but of the very elements themselves.” (Allie et al. 2002) A low-key intro with an isolated percussion shock, then various chorale or horn passages interrupted by other shocks. Mounting percussions lead to short harp runs and rushing sounds built to a pounding beat followed by menacing orchestral and chorale ensembles that fade out. The cave scene exteriors were filmed at Bronson Caves, a quarry tunnel, in Bronson Canyon, Griffith Park, 3200 Canyon Drive, Los Angeles, California.
