Lord Taverners Accessible Minibuses Grant Programme (UK)

The Lords Taverners, the UK's leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, has re-opened its Accessible Minibuses grants programme.

Schools, clubs and youth organisations across the UK that cater for young people under the age of 25 who have a physical/ sensory/ learning disability can apply to the Lords Taverners for specially-adapted, wheelchair-accessible minibuses. Last year the Lords Taverners delivered 40 specially-adapted, wheelchair-accessible minibuses. These vehicles give young people with disabilities access to new places and experiences. Lord's Taverners minibuses are based on the current Ford Transit model, with a diesel engine. The average cost to the charity of an accessible minibus is over £61,000. Please note that the Lords Taverners are unable to support schools that cater for socially disadvantaged children, or mainstream schools for children with behavioural problems. 

In 2017, the Forest School in Knaresborough just outside of Harrogate received a brand new specially adapted minibus from the Lord's Taverners. The minibus is used on a daily basis for local visits to the school's allotment, swimming lessons, Riding for the Disabled, Duke of Edinburgh walks and voluntary work, as well as special trips to the pantomime or to 10 pin bowling.

Grow Wild – Creative Funding for Young People (UK)

Two opportunities for young people to receive £500 to fund a creative project that will raise awareness about the importance of UK native wildflowers and fungi. Young people aged 14 - 25 can bid for Creative Projects funding by sending in a short video application; emerging young artists aged 18+ can bid to co-create with Go Wild to bring their already developed project to life. Visual art, music, poetry, dance, and theatre are just some of the ways the project could be presented.

Previous projects supported include: Zak, an actor and director with the Central Youth Theatre in Wolverhampton, who shared WW1 soldiers accounts of wildflowers on the battlefields in his Grow Wild youth project 'Regeneration', exploring an untold side to the war through film, spoken word and drama.

Applications for either fund should be submitted to Go Wild by Midday on Monday 2nd July 2018.

Funding for Expressive and Creative Children’s Play Projects (UK and International)

Schools, registered UK and international charities can apply for up to £40,000, spread over 1 or 2 years for projects that help children between the ages of 0-8 to play expressively and creatively. Projects funded will provide new ways and environments that address disadvantage and value diversity, support children under stress or develop staff and parental engagement with young children.

The Froebelian Trust has allocated a fund of £40,000 for new applications to the 2018 Innovation Grants Programme and the deadline to apply is 5pm on Friday, 29th June 2018.

School Grants to Promote Physics (UK)

UK schools and colleges can apply for grants of up to £600 for small-scale projects or events linked to the teaching or promotion of physics and engineering to pupils aged 5 - 19. Grants can be used to support a wide range of projects such as school based science weeks, extracurricular activities, science clubs, careers event or a visit from a working physicist or engineer. Grants may be used for the following project-related purposes: materials / resources; transport; marketing and publicity; other purposes deemed appropriate by the judges; and supply cover (in certain circumstances).

Previous projects to receive funding include:

Ampleforth Collge for a visit to Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory; and St John's High School for a Practical Rocketry workshop to design a water propelled rocket.

Finnis Scott Foundation (UK)

Charities and charitable organisations - including school Parent Teacher Associations - are eligible to apply for revenue and capital grants of between £500 and £10,000 to support horticulture, plant sciences, fine art and art history projects. Grants awarded may cover capital or revenue expenditure. Preference is given to smaller organisations where the grant will have a significant impact.

Rhyl Primary PTA and Prism Youth Project (helping some of the most disengaged young people aged 12-21 in the Bradford District to improve the quality of their lives) are among past recipients.

The funding is being made available through the Finnis Scott Foundation and the next closing date for applications is the 22nd June 2018.

Support for Environmental Outreach Education for Disadvantaged Young People (UK)

Schools, colleges and youth groups can receive up to 80% towards the costs of providing environmental outreach education for groups of disadvantaged young people through the Field Studies Council's Kids Fund. The Field Studies Council is an independent educational charity committed to raising awareness about the natural world and works through a network of residential and day Centres in the UK to provide outreach education and training.

The funding is available to help young people aged 14 - 18 (25 for those with special needs) attend a course who may otherwise be excluded due to some form of disadvantage - health, mobility, deprivation or financial. One free staff/adult place is provided for every 12 young people; additional adults pay 20% +VAT. This includes all equipment, tuition and waterproof hire costs. Food and accommodation are included for residential courses.

In the past, the following schools have received funding:

The Westminster School, Sandwell that received funding for a group of 15 students aged 14 to 16 from this special needs school to attend a four night residential at FSC Preston Montford in March; and

Long Eaton School, Derbyshire that received funding for a group of 20 boys to attend a weekend at FSC Rhyd-y-creuau.

Funding Available to Bring Fibre Broadband to Remote Communities with a School (UK)

As part of its commitment to make fibre broadband available throughout the UK, BT has made available a £2 million grants scheme for communities with an Ofsted registered school. The Community Fibre Partnerships programme is aimed at the final 5% of the UK not covered by fibre broadband rollout plans. Through the programme communities can apply for a match-funded grant of up to £30,000 toward the cost of their new fibre infrastructure, if that new infrastructure could also serve their local school. 

To access the grant scheme, communities need to register their interest in having a community fibre partnership. The scheme will provide 50% towards the cost of installing fibre broadband. The community will need to raise the additional 50%. In order to achieve this BT has teamed up with the Crowdfunding website "Spacehive", where communities can post their fibre broadband project to raise donations towards the costs involved. Thus, more than 35 premises in Nant Gwynant in Wales will have access to some of the fastest broadband speeds in Europe when engineers from Openreach install the new network using Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) technology.

Funding to Help Disadvantaged and Neglected Children (UK)

Not for profit organisations such as schools; registered charities; voluntary organisations; churches; and community interest groups; etc. can apply for grants of up to £10,000 per year for up to 3 years for projects that help children and young people overcome the effects of illness, distress, abuse or neglect; disability; behavioural or psychological difficulties; and poverty and deprivation.

Projects supported in the past include:

Trewirgie Junior School which received a grant of £9,760 to provide after school sailing sessions to disadvantage children aged 7-11;

Swindon Downs Syndrome Group which received a grant of £10k to provide drama sessions, sports activities and a regular youth club for children and young people with Downs Syndrome;

The Midlothian Association of Play which received a grant of £9,996 to run holiday playschemes with trips and activities for young people living in low income areas.

Funding for Links with Japan (UK)

Grants of £2,000 - £7,000 are available to promote and support interaction between the two countries. Daiwa Foundation Small Grants can cover all fields of activity, including educational and other projects and events. New initiatives are especially encouraged.

Projects that have received funding in the past include:

Beckfoot School (Bingley) which received a grant of £3,000 to support a two-week curriculum-based school exchange visit by ten students and two teachers to Hiroshima Kokusai High School; and

Dene Magna School which received a grant of £4,000 to support a school exchange visit by three teachers and nine pupils to enhance links established in 2002 with two partner schools in Okinawa and to consolidate Japanese as part of its curriculum.

Funding to Develop the Classics in Primary and Secondary Schools (UK)

Classics for All, which aims to develop the teaching of classics such as Latin, Greek, classical civilisation and ancient history in UK state schools has opened its 2018 grants programme. In 2018 the funding focus remains on supporting the development or introduction of Classics in schools or consortia of state schools especially in areas where there is limited or no access to school provision. Classics for All aims to reach 200 new schools.

Previous grants awarded have ranged in size from £100 to £15,000 supporting everything from the establishment of an after school Classics club to training for teachers in 20 schools to introduce Latin or Classical Civilisation at Key Stage 2 and 3, GCSE or A level. Classics for All have also supported a number of schools already teaching Classics to develop the scale and ambition of their Classics offer. For example, Dixons Trinity in Bradford is the first school in our Multi Academy Trust (MAT) of nine schools to champion classics on the curriculum. Following support from Classics for All in 2015, we were able to offer a Latin course to 75 pupils at Key Stage 3 and had 5 students opt for Classical Civilisation GCSE.

Greggs Foundation Breakfast Club Grants (England, Scotland & Wales)

The Greggs Foundation currently supports 380 breakfast clubs throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Schools that are interested in opening a breakfast club at their school must be able to show that at least 40% of your pupils qualify for free school meals and that the school serves a disadvantaged community. School should able to attract adult volunteers to help run the scheme and attendance at the club must be free for all pupils. The Foundation uses the money to support breakfast clubs through an initial start-up grant for equipment such as chest freezers to store food items or toys and activities for the club. Greggs Foundation also makes a payment each term towards other food items and Greggs plc donates bread from the nearest shop.

Recently set up breakfast clubs include:

"clubs" at Hillside Community Primary School, in Skelmersdale which received funding of £600 for its breakfast club which around 45 young people attend each day; and

Swalwell Primary School, in Gateshead where nearly 50% of school children are entitle to free meals received a grant of £1,100.

Although applications can be made at any time, there is currently a waiting list for funding whilst new sponsorship partners are being identified.

Local School Nature Grants Scheme (England, Scotland and Wales)

Learning through Landscapes has announced that the next deadline for schools to apply to the Local School Nature Grant Scheme is the 31st August 2018. The next deadline thereafter will be 30 th

November.

The scheme offers schools the opportunity to apply for up to £500 worth of equipment from the product catalogue on the Learning through Landscapes website to help schools undertake environmental improvements. The scheme is only open to schools; learners must be aged 5 and upwards.

Successful applicants will have demonstrated that they are passionate about making environmental improvements and, ideally, will have included the children and their local community in decision making about the project and the choice of equipment. All schools in England, Scotland and Wales have a list of 72 products to choose from; the list includes items such as bird boxes, bee hotels and den making kits. Awards include a two-hour training session to help schools get the most out of the equipment provided. The programme is only open to schools. Nurseries, Playgroups, Pre-Schools and gardening groups are not eligible. Reception settings attached to a school (i.e. on the same physical site) are eligible to apply in partnership with a school, but the school must lead the application. Secondary schools are very welcome to apply.  Applicants must be employed by the school. We are unable to accept applications on behalf of the school from PTA's, Governors, ‘Friends of' groups etc.

The Ford Britain Trust (England & Wales)

The Ford Britain Trust's Small Grants is open for applications until the 30th June 2018. The next deadline thereafter will be 31st October 2018.

Through the Small Grants Programme registered charities, Schools/PTAs (Non-fee paying, state sector schools only) and non-profit organisations can apply for grants of up to £250 for projects that:

benefit the local community/environment; work with young people/children; promote education/schools (mainstream); and support special educational needs and people with disabilities.

The Trust operates in those areas where the Ford Motor Company Limited has its present activities and a long-standing association with local communities, these are: Essex (including East London); St Albans; Bridgend (South Wales); Manchester; Southampton; and Daventry. Exceptions may be made for initiatives in which Ford Motor Company Limited employees and retirees are involved. Grants made by the Trust are usually one-off donations for a specific capital project or part of a project, typically items of furniture and equipment. The Trust also provides grants through its Large Grants Programme (grants of up to £3,000).

The application deadline for its Large Grants programme is the 31st July 2018.

Funding for Healthy Eating Projects (Scotland)

Community Food and Health Scotland (CFHS) has announced that its Annual Development Fund (formerly known as the small grant scheme) re-opened for applications on the 1st June 2018. Grants ranging from £500 to £3,000 are available to groups and agencies who would like to tackle one or more of the barriers to healthy eating, such as affordability or availability, and the negative impact of culture and lack of food skills. CFHS welcome applications from local groups or agencies working with and within low-income communities throughout Scotland including from agencies such as the NHS, schools or other local authority organisations if they work closely with community groups. The closing date for applications is the 6th July 2018.

Projects funded in the past include:

Carrick Academy which received a grant of £3,327.82 for growing, healthy eating and green gym project; and

North Perth Community School which received a grant of £1448.00 for a cooking skills project.

Funding to Support the Education of Young People who have a Physical or Learning Disability (Scotland)

The John Watson Trust has announced that the next application deadline for 2018 will be the 3rd August 2018. The Trust awards grants for educational purposes to children and young people under the age of 21 who have a physical or learning disability or who are socially disadvantaged. Whilst the Trust operates primarily within Edinburgh and the Lothians, it may also award grants Scotland-wide to eligible individuals and organisations that include schools, established charitable organisations and other groups supporting disadvantaged young people.

Grants can cover expenses such as:

Dyslexia tuition School trips (must be applied for by the school and not individuals) Bus passes School expenses such as books and equipment Laptops where there is a special education need.

Schools may also apply for help towards school trips or outings for eligible pupils. In exceptional cases, where personal circumstances make boarding necessary, school boarding fees may qualify for a grant.

Grants for Schools and Young People’s Projects (Southwark)

Schools and organisations working with schools and colleges in the London Borough of Southwark have until 24th August 2018 to apply for a grant of up to £1,000 from the Newcomen Collet Foundation. Priority is given to:

assist schools and other groups to purchase equipment for the benefit of children; support extra curricula activities (e.g. school trips, after school clubs, holiday clubs, uniformed

organisations) for children and young people; and assist organisations which provide educational opportunities to schools and colleges in the

Borough of Southwark (e.g. visiting theatre companies and musicians).

In 2017, Dog Kennel Hill Primary School received £2,240; John Donne Primary School received £2,000; and Oliver Goldsmith Primary School received £1,620.

It is unlikely that they will provide 100% of funding so applicants should also have additional funding options in place.

School Holiday Activity Fund (London)

The School Holiday Activity Fund has grants available to help charities and state schools deliver activities for children and young people during the school holidays in North West London. This includes all half-term breaks, Easter, Christmas and the summer holiday.

The Fund will pay for the running costs of holiday programmes that provide young people with activities in supportive and accessible environments. Up to £4,000 is available for activities such as holiday drop-in activities; arts activities; sports projects; family activities; trips out of London; etc. Applications must be made by various deadlines throughout the year.

The next closing date for applications is the 21st September 2018 to run activities during the October half-term. The following deadline will be the 16th November 2018 to run activities during the Christmas holiday.

Funding Reminders

Grants to Support Children’s Health and Education (UK)

Registered charities and schools (as long as they apply through a registered charity) can apply for grants of up to £30,000 per year charities for projects that improve education and health for children and young people with disabilities; those who are sick in hospital; and those who are life limited (requiring palliative care). Grants can be made for up to two-years. The grants are awarded through the DM Thomas Foundation Central Grants Programme and the closing date for applications is the 24th July 2018.

Previous projects supported include:

Arundel CE Primary School, which received a grant of £379 for new playground markings helping stimulate learning through play;

Brookfields School Association which received a grant of £2,022 to purchase adaptive tricycles to support the needs of disabled children; and

Farney Close School which received a grant of £2,500 for laptops for students with a variety of learning disabilities to help them to continue their assignments/modules at college.

Matched Funding for Books for Primary Schools (UK)

Educational specialist retailers BookLife are offering match-funding on book purchases to all primary schools in the UK. Schools purchasing books from BookLife can apply for match funding of the same amount - effectively doubling the value of their order. Books can be purchased online, by phone or by email. A total of £3million has been allocated to the scheme and there is no limit to how many times a school can apply. The offer is valid for all products in the BookLife Match Funding Catalogue (except those from the BookLife Publishing category).  

Schools that have benefited from the scheme include:

Orchards C of E Primary School received funding and were able to provide a fantastic range of books to inspire our children to develop a love of reading;

Roman Way First School in Herts; and Narborough Primary Academy.

The scheme closes at the end of July 2018.

Ernest Cook Trust Grants Programme (UK)

Schools and not for profit organisations can apply for grants of up to £12,000 for projects that encourage young people's interest in the countryside; literacy, numeracy and science. All applications are expected to link in with either the National Curriculum or with recognised qualifications. Funding is available via two funding streams.

The small grants programme (grants under £4,000) supports state schools and small registered charities which require a small amount of pump-priming in order for projects to take place. The programme is a rolling one, with meetings at roughly two-monthly intervals throughout the year.

The large grants programme (grants up to £12,000) is aimed at larger-scale education programmes. The next closing date for applications to the large grants programme is the 31st July 2018.

Previous projects supported include:

Fleet Infant School in Hampshire which received a grant of £1,495 to buy Numicon teaching resources to raise numeracy levels;

Teesmouth Field Centre (based at Hartlepool Power Station Visitor Centre) which received a grant of £4,200 to provide environmental education activities for primary school groups on the river Tees and the national nature reserve at Teesmouth. Six schools participated.

Dersingham Primary School in Kings Lynn which received £2,700 to transform maths teaching. The school led a workshop with all children and their parents to show how the school teaches maths, including strategies for calculations under the new curriculum.

The Japan Society Small Grants Programme (UK)

Educational establishments such as schools and colleges as well as community based organisations that wish to develop projects and events related to Japan and Japanese culture are able to apply for funding through the Japan Society's Small Grants programme. The awards support projects with an education or youth focus. Most awards are of £1,000 or less and should not, in principle, cover more than 50% of the total budget. Applications may be made at any time and applicants are informed of the decision within 4 weeks of receipt of the application.

Previous projects supported include Witchford Village College which ran a Japan Day for year 9 students. It involved a variety of activities, such as kendo and taiko drumming performances, Japanese cookery, origami folding and haiku writing. The Japan Society small grant was given to support the workshop leader, lecturer and performer of the event.

Tax-free Funding to Train as a Chemistry Teacher (England)

Awards of £28,000 in tax-free funding are available to up to 140 talented individuals who want to enter chemistry teacher training in England in the 2018/19 academic year. Scholars also get free membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry for two years.  

Eligible applicants will be:

taking up a training place on a secondary teaching course that leads to QTS (pre-16); hold a chemistry or related degree with a proven or predicted grade of a 2:1 or above, a

relevant PhD or Master's degree or recognised equivalent or have completed a subject knowledge enhancement course in chemistry before September 2018;

meet the bursary eligibility criteria as set out in the National College for Teaching and Leadership's bursary guidance; 

be classified as a 'Home' students as defined on the UKCISA website; be eligible to draw down a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company; and have not previously applied for a scholarship in the same academic year.

Applications for the 2018/19 academic year will close on 31 July 2018, however, early application is recommended.

New £50 Million Fund to Expand Selective Schools (England)

The Department for Education has announced a £50 million Selective Schools Expansion Fund to expand the number of places at existing good or outstanding selective schools.

This fund is part of several measures to increase good school places, following the Schools that Work for Everyone consultation, which set out the government's ambition to ensure there is a good school place for every child, whatever their background. These measures include a new funding round to create new Free Schools, support to expand good faith schools, and a fresh agreement with the independent schools sector to help improve outcomes for pupils of all backgrounds. 

The £50million Selective Schools Expansion Fund is available for 2018-19 so that existing selective schools can expand their premises to create more places.  The fund is open to applications from selective and partially selective schools that select according to general academic ability, subject to meeting the initial eligibility criteria.  The fund is also open to both local authority maintained schools and academies that meet the eligibility criteria. To make these schools more inclusive, Schools will have to submit a Fair Access and Partnership Plan setting out what action they will take to increase admissions of disadvantaged pupils. 

The closing date for applications to the Selective Schools Expansion Fund is midday on the 19 th July 2018.

Funding for School Breakfasts (Scotland)

All Primary schools in Scotland where 55% (or above) pupils are in SIMD Decile 1 and 2 and/or 35% (or above) are eligible for Free School Meals can apply for healthy breakfast food to give to children most in need. Secondary Schools qualify for support when 40% (or above) pupils are in SIMD Decile 1 and 2.

In Scotland, Magic Breakfast is working with 13 schools in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife and North Ayrshire, with plans in place to begin delivering food and expert support to schools in East Ayrshire, Falkirk, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire later in 2018. The Magic Breakfast support scheme aims to end hunger as a barrier to education and accepts applications at any time.

Apply for Grants of up to £20k to Improve Sports and Leisure Facilities (London & South East)

Grants of between £5,000 and £20,000 are available to small capital projects that aim to help improve existing or to build new sports facilities. The funding is available to not for profit organisations (including Schools) to encourage and support more people to become involved in sport and physical activity. To be eligible the project needs to be located in in one or more of the 32 London Boroughs and/or the City of London, Surrey, South Northamptonshire and Aylesbury Vale.

The funding is being made available through the London Marathon Charitable Trust and the current funding priorities are to increase the participation rate of:

individuals who are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity; and groups which are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity; and children

and young people outside of school hours.

Previous projects supported include • A grant of £15,000 for Mill Hall School for Deaf Children to provide a covered play area. Schools are eligible to apply for projects that will be open to the local community for a significant proportion of each year. The next closing date for applications is the 23rd July 2018.

Funding for Major Capital Projects to Encourage Physical Activity (London & South East)

Grants of between £20,001 and £150,000 are available for the renovation, modernisation or creation of significant sports and leisure facilities in London, Surrey, South Northamptonshire and Aylesbury Vale. The funding is available to not for profit organisations (including Schools) that have already shown a commitment to encouraging and supporting people who are not physically active to participate in sporting activities.

To be eligible, applicants must have in place robust business plans as well as strategies for increasing participation into the future along with plans for monitoring and evaluating their impact. Priorities for funding are to increase participation, especially among those who are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity. Schools are eligible to apply for projects that will be open to the local community for a significant proportion of each year.

Past projects funded are:

The Archer Academy in East Finchley, London received a grant of £500,000 to install state of the art sporting facilities. The new facilities, which will be available for use by both pupils at the school and the local community, include a bespoke indoor climbing wall, suitable for disabled users, and an all-weather 3G pitch with floodlighting.

Stoke Newington School and Sixth Form in the London borough of Hackney received a grant of £150,000 for the Compact Athletics Facility. It is the first dedicated athletics facility in Hackney and includes a sprint straight, long jump pit, high jump and throwing areas, as well as a running trail.

The funding is being made available through the London Marathon Charitable Trust and the closing date for applications is the 23rd July 2018.
