Learning Summary Reach for Reading Unit 7 BIG Question: Why should we care about garbage?

During this 7th week of at home learning, 5th graders will continue working through Unit 7 of their Reach for Reading curriculum. Students will read a scientific essay titled, “Message in a Bottle” by, David de Rothschild. They will then be tasked with making connections, and comparing scientific concepts across texts. Fifth grade students will critique the evidence that authors cite, and identify their reasons for doing so. Finally, students will continue developing science and academic vocabulary, as well as practicing with multiple-meaning words.

Word Work

Task 1:

• Turn to page 484 in your Reach for Reading text, and read about Multiple-Meaning Words.

• On the bottom of page 484, read the passage in the “Try It Together” section. Answer the two questions about the word, produce.

• Choose three of the following words, all of which have multiple meanings: change, period, credit, foot, drop, plain

o Use each word you chose in two different sentences, showing how each can be used differently. Use a blank sheet to record your work. Example: The shoe was too small for my foot.

The length of my ruler equals one foot. Task 2:

Note: This task should be completed AFTER reading “Message in a Bottle.”

• Turn to page 492 in your anthology. Read the section at the bottom of the page called, Talk Together.

• Prepare to respond to the question: “How can garbage be used for good?”

• Try to use all eleven Key Words at the top of page 492 to answer the question.

• Use a blank sheet of paper to write your response.

viewpoint that plastic bottles waste natural resources? o What evidence does the author use to support his idea that plastic

contributes to garbage on the Earth? o Recreate an organizer from the menu, or use blank paper to record

your responses. Task 2:

• Review last week’s reading assignment, “The World of Waste” on pages 464 – 481 in your anthology.

Unit 4: “The Research-Based Argument Essay” (Opinion/Argument) Task 1:

• Review the reasons on each side of your graphic organizer from last week.

• Decide which side of the argument you are on: pro chocolate milk in schools or against chocolate milk in schools.

• Transfer your claim and reasons that support your claim to the graphic organizer below.

Fifth grade students will critique the evidence that authors cite, and identify their reasons for doing so. Finally, students will continue developing science and academic vocabulary, as well as practicing with multiple-meaning words. For our students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) we have included a list of accommodations for you to use. Feel free to choose the accommodation from the list that best supports your student. The accommodations appear after every task, and are meant to support the learning for that specific task. Please note any accommodations in your student’s IEP that are not listed below may be used as well.

Word Work

Task 1: • Turn to page 484 in your Reach for Reading text, and read about Multiple-Meaning Words. • On the bottom of page 484, read the passage in the “Try It Together” section. Example: The shoe was too small for my foot. The length of my ruler equals one foot.

Accommodations for students with IEPs:

1. Read aloud: For students who have difficulty accessing the text – An adult may read the passage to the student.

2. Decrease workload: Have your student answer the questions on page 484. Following this, have your students complete the task for one of the given words.

3. Scribe: For students who have difficulty with writing – the student may verbally respond while an adult writes their response on their paper.

Task 2:

Note: This task should be completed AFTER reading “Message in a Bottle.”

• Turn to page 492 in your anthology. Read the section at the bottom of the page called, Talk Together.

A storage company advertises three different choices for all your storage needs: “The Cube,” a true cube with a volume of 64m cubed; “The Double” (double the volume of the cube); and “The Half” (half the volume of the cube). What could be the dimensions of the three storage units? How might they be oriented to cover the most floor?
