Welcome to the thirdannual New HamburgLive! Festival of theArts. It’s a cliché, butit’s true – this year, weare even bigger and bet-ter.

Bigger, because wehave added a day to theFestival, which now cov-ers six days. Better?Well, we are very proudto be the recipient of theKitchener-Waterloo Arts Award as “Best NewFestival”, so it may be hard to top that. But wethink we have.

The 2011 Festival offers a superb mix ofmusic, art, and literature. We are thrilled tohave been chosen by actor and writer BarryMacGregor to premier his one-man perform-

ance, “Tales of theTheatre”. Our musicalline-up is incrediblystrong, from the Celticmelodies of the IrishDescendants to the clas-sical piano virtuosity ofKatherine Chi. You’llenjoy the author events, and our art show is veryimpressive.

Other highlights?You’ll have to browse

through the pages of this program – it’spacked with information about the perform-ances and events of the 2011 Festival.

It will be funny, and fun, and terrificentertainment.

MacGregor asks the question, “What hap-pens when a play you are watching goeswrong? Is every performance without a flaw?”

He’s the right man to ask. In the 60 yearsBarry MacGregor has been a professionalactor, he has been present at quite a numberof what he terms “major hiccups” during per-formances, and he has a large collection of“Tales of the Theatre”.

MacGregor has established a stellar the-atrical reputation with his work with theStratford and Shaw Festivals, on Broadway, and in theatres around the world. In 2004, he

The Festival Gala is a highlight of theNew Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts. This year, the evening includes performancesby the outstanding acappella group,TheEssentials; the official opening of the NewHamburg Live! Art Show, a Silent Auctionfeaturing tickets to major cultural events, original art, fine wine and plenty of other sur-prises; with refreshments and a cash bar.

The 2011 Festival Gala is held Wednesdayevening, June 1, starting at 7 p.m. The eventis sponsored by TD Canada Trust.

The Essentials bring their incredible talent, superb musical taste, and always evidentsense of fun to the Gala. The group has ush-ered in a new decade with a new member, newsound, new CD, and renewed enthusiasm.

Their website notes that they been called“one of the finest acappella groups in theworld” by one reviewer and "musical genius-es" by their mothers.

Both opinions may be true, because TheEssentials continue to sell out shows whilereinventing themselves and are now emerg-ing on the international stage with some newtwists on some age-old ideas.

The group includes Dan Speck, Thom Speck,Jo3 Oliva and Janet Turner. “It’s been a greatjourney so far but that was really just a warm-up,” says Dan Speck. "Since Janet joined thegroup in the last year, we’ve basically rein-vented ourselves. But we won’t ever get awayfrom what got us here – strong vocal har-monies and performances, tied to unforget-table melodies.”

The Essential’s newest member, JanetTurner, is a singer/songwriter who was bornin London, Ontario but moved to Toronto afew years ago. Coincidentally, this was thesame journey that The Essentials had taken afew years earlier as a group.

The Essentials began as a group of guys

singing acappella doo-wop songs in the park-ing lot of the Merla MaeIce Cream parlour inLondon. Their uniquerange of voices andarrangements of songsfrom the 50’s to modernday struck a chord withaudiences near and far.

Their success led themto tours from Vancouverto Halifax in Canada, from San Francisco toNew York City south ofthe border, and evenacross the pond inEurope.

“I was excited to joinThe Essentials,” says Janet. “I used to go andsee them perform around my hometown of

London. I had no idea that I’d be in the groupa year later.”

The New HamburgLive! Festival of theArts presents a widespectrum of music, fromroots and jazz to classi-cal performances. Thisyear, the Festival isstrong across the board, but we’re especiallyproud of the breadth ofclassical talent comingto our community.

The WindermereString Quartet is anoutstanding example ofclassical music at itsfinest. John Terauds, ofthe Toronto Star haswritten, “Because it doesn’t happen often, hearing the chamber music of Mozart, Haydnand Beethoven on period instruments can be

a refreshing experience. Toronto’s masters ofthe genre are the Windermere StringQuartet.”

The Windermere String Quartet was formed

in the spring of 2005 to perform the music ofMozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert andtheir contemporaries on period instruments.

The Quartet is rapidly gathering notice forits dynamic performances and distinctivesound. Violinists Rona Goldensher andElizabeth Loewen Andrews, violist AnthonyRapoport, and cellist Laura Jones are wellknown to audiences as performers with lead-ing period instrument ensembles throughoutCanada and the U.S., between them perform-ing with Tafelmusik, Toronto Consort, Aradia,Masques (Montreal), Philharmonia BaroqueOrchestra (San Francisco), Aston Magna(New York), and many others.

Along with their wealth of experience inBaroque and Classical styles, the members ofthe Windermere String Quartet have a widerange of musical tastes and have also beenacclaimed for their performances with suchgroups as Sinfonia Toronto and Talisker

Players and Klezmer music with the ensem-ble HuTsaTsa. These eclectic interests bring afreshness and passionate spontaneity to theirperformances.

The Windermere String Quartet ConcertSeries explores the well-known masterworksas well as lesser-known gems of the stringquartet repertoire. The quartet has also per-formed at Toronto’s Academy Concert Series, the Toronto Music Garden, Nuit Blanche,Toronto Early Music Centre’s MusicallySpeaking series, Stratford Chamber Music, and the chamber music festival Music at PortMilford. The Quartet has enjoyed collabora-tions with clarinetist Nicolai Tarasov, lutenist/guitarist Lucas Harris (who performed atNew Hamburg Live! in 2010) and fortepi-anist Sharon Burlacoff.

Fans of the New Hamburg Live! Festivalof the Arts know Vicki St. Pierre well. Shehas been Music Director of the Festival sinceit began in 2009. She has conducted the choireach year, and has sung at Gilbert & Sullivan,Broadway, and gospel concerts. And yes, shewill wear some of those hats this year, too.

But this year, she is also going to do whatshe does best of all, as New Hamburg Live!proudly presents our own Vicki St. Pierre inconcert.

St. Pierre is a renowned classical and oper-atic mezzo-soprano. On Good Friday of thisyear, her performance in Bach’s St. JohnPassion led one reviewer to write, “Vicki St.

Pierre was memorable,” commending her for“a steady sense of purity and focused refine-ment.” She is praised for her warm, lush voicewhich invitingly combines clarity of expres-sion and beauty of tone, and is described asrich with both a darkness and brightness.

St. Pierre is one of Canada’s busiest classi-cal singers. Recent engagements include per-formances of Bach’s St. John Passion with theGrand Philharmonic Choir; Beethoven’sNinth Symphony with the TorontoPhilharmonic Orchestra; Monteverdi’sVespers of 1610 with the Toronto Consort,Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea withOpera Atelier, Zelenka’s St. Cecilia Mass with

New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts is againoffering a Choral Workshop and Concert, but with a shift inmusical focus for 2011.

The Choral Workshop – culminating in a bluegrass andgospel concert – was a highlight of both previous Festivals. However, organizers understand that many choral singersappreciate a variety of musical styles, and that choir mem-bers enjoy singing classical works, as well.

This year, the Choral Workshop is part of our Tribute toFranz Liszt, Saturday, June 4. The workshop is again con-ducted by New Hamburg Live! Musical Director Vicki St.Pierre. Accompanist will be pianist James Bourne, who per-formed at the Festival in 2009.

Singers who attend the workshop will learn two FranzLiszt anthems... and will then perform as a massed choir to

The New HamburgLive! Festival of theArts has established astrong tradition of “a bigfinish”. The closing act isa Gospel Concert, which will be heldSunday, June 5, at 3p.m., at SteinmannMennonite Church.

This year, g o s p e lmusic lovers will bethrilled with the line-upof performers, which features some of the bestarea musicians backing a trio of incrediblegospel singers.

The soloists – who will also be backing oneanother with rich harmonies – includeDenise Pelley, of London; Hiram Joseph, from Toronto; and New Hamburg Live!Musical Director Vicki St. Pierre.

They will be backedby an All-Star bandincluding guitaristMike Erb, John Wiebeon bass, keyboard play-er Scott Galloway, drummer Jeff Cowell, and – back by populardemand after his guestappearance with theKen Whiteley Band lastyear – Tom Cummingson vibes.

As well, the concert will feature back-upvocals by the New Hamburg Live! Singers,a small group adding even more depth to theGospel harmonies of the afternoon.

Denise Pelley is known across Canada forher jazz performances at events such as thedu Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival inToronto, the Ottawa Jazz Festival, the

Waterloo Jazz Festivaland, of course, manymore. She has been fea-tured in OprahWinfrey’s “O” magazine.

Hiram Joseph is oneof Canada’s premiergospel artists, with acareer stretching over25 years and touching35 countries. He hasshared a stage with leg-ends including MotherTheresa, Billy Graham and Tony Campolo. Most recently, he has been a featured artist onthe very popular Gaither Homecoming Tour.

New Hamburg Live! is very pleased toinclude New Hamburg’s own Mike Erb andJohn Wiebe in our Gospel Concert lineup for2011. These two superb musicians are amongthe hardest-working and busiest performers

in the region. They arejoined by colleagues key-board player ScottGalloway and drummerJeff Cowell, who localmusic lovers will knowfrom a wide variety ofgigs, including theEpicurean Hootenanny.

Vibraphonist TomCummings, who recent-ly moved to this regionfrom Texas, was little

known in the area until he lit up the placewith his vibe work at the 2010 Festival.

And speaking of lighting up the place – theaudience will eagerly anticipate a reprise ofVicki St. Pierre’s show-stopping solos in theher gospel concert performances during previ-ous Festivals.
