Registration will open soon for our fourth annual church camp! You don’t want to miss this weekend of fun, family and bonding with your church community. Learn more about this exciting weekend from Georgina Straw, who organizes the camp along with a band of energetic volunteers. !Tell us about church camp.Church camp is a time to enjoy a beautiful weekend in western Maryland, with a choice of staying in cabins, lodge condos (limited) or camping. Our church is so huge, there are limited opportunities for developing relationships and having one-on-one time with each other as a community. This is a chance for us to get to know each other more.!When and where does camp take place this year? The camp is Oct. 17-19 — Friday evening through Sunday afternoon — at Mt. Aetna Camp and Retreat Center in Hagerstown, Md. !Who can attend?Anybody can attend! We have activities geared for singles, couples and families. We’ve done all kinds of seminars, from massages to stress-reduction and cooking classes; we have something for everybody. !About how many people attended last year?About 190 people attended last year, including people who came up on day passes.

What activities are planned for the weekend? We’ve done s’mores and a bonfire and outdoor worship with a speaker and singers Friday evening. There are different activities Saturday afternoon, including a hike up Black Rock. And Sunday, we generally do a football game on the field, horseback riding (for an extra fee) and activities for kids, including crafts and face painting.!But Saturday night is the highlight — a social time when we do games, karaoke for adults, movie and popcorn for kids. We had an epic Saturday night last year.!What should people look forward to this year? This year’s guest speaker is Dwain Esmond, vice president for the Review and Herald Publishing Association’s Editorial Division. And our own Manny Cruz will serve as emcee for the weekend.!Why should people go to camp this year?Sometimes it’s hard to meet new people unless you’re involved in a ministry or small group. Having this camp experience enhances old relationships and gives us opportunities to build new ones. This is just an awesome, spiritual weekend filled with fun activities that gives you the chance to make connections and lasting friendships

— and several people have over the years we’ve done the camp. A bonus: You don’t have to cook. We serve five meals (dinner Friday, three meals Saturday, breakfast Sunday).!What do you enjoy about church camp? I didn’t have church camp growing up, but my husband did, and he’d tell me these awesome stories. I want that experience for my kids, and what better community to do that in than your church?

A few years ago, I attended the Youth Specialties Convention, a popular large gathering for youth workers and pastors. One featured speaker was Shane Claiborne, an activist and founding member of The Simple Way, a Philadelphia-based community that serves the poor by living among them.

The auditorium was overflowing with 5,000 on the evening Claiborne was scheduled to speak. We knew he was a terrific speaker and were very excited to hear him live. After a lengthy introduction and thunderous drumroll and applause, Claiborne walked out wearing a simple cotton shirt, homemade drawstring pants, Birkenstock sandals and a bandana wrapped around his long blond dreadlocks. Everyone was silent as he stepped to the microphone. With a coverless Bible in hand, he began to read Matthew 5, the Beatitudes.

At the end of the Beatitudes, he paused. We expected him to put the Bible down and begin to speak profound words of inspiration. But he did not. He continued to, “You are the salt of the earth...” He finished reading all of chapter five, and we expected him to put the Bible down and begin to speak. But he again did not. He read all of chapter six, and again, we expected him to put the Bible down and speak. Instead, he continued on and read Matthew 7: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” The last verse in the chapter reads, “He taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.”

Claiborne then closed the Bible, slowly looked around the eerily quiet auditorium and said, “This is the greatest sermon ever preached.” He then walked off the stage.

We were stunned. Our minds racing with the question, “What just happened here?” We all came to hear a great and popular individual speak. We expected nothing short of powerful and inspirational speaking. Instead,

we heard Jesus’ own words in a sermon he gave while teaching on a Galilean hillside.

For a full five minutes no one said anything, no one moved. We just sat in silence, letting the experience of hearing the Word of God sink in. We began to hear sniffles and then more sniffles, getting louder, as the power of God’s own words began to cut into our hearts. The sniffles turned into gentle weeping and then into muffled anguished cries. The entire auditorium was crying. We sat there for more than an hour, crying and praying together — absolutely overcome by the simplicity of what Jesus said.

At that moment, I fell in love, really fell in love, with the Word of God.

National statistics show that Christian adults spend little time each week reading and studying God’s Word. A 2012 study from Christianity Today shows that only 19 percent of churchgoers read the Bible daily. The study further states that only 10 percent of all professed Christians have actually read the Bible. Most get their understanding of the Word of God secondhand through other people, TV shows, movies and even the ever popular Veggie Tales series. In effect, Christians are demonstrating that they really don’t believe God’s Word is important and relevant to their lives.

The Word of God is the greatest sermon ever preached; the greatest story ever told; the most powerful words that can transform and change our lives and our destiny. When was the last time you fell in love with the Word of God?
