Thank you New Hope! A few words from Angie Bernard to the faithful volunteers and contributors to the cause: !Heartfelt thanks from my family, the seniors and community members who benefitted from our congregation's uniting with an unselfish outpouring of food, time and energy. Thanks and God's blessing to all who purchased, hauled, labeled, transferred and faithfully delivered food each month. I am especially thankful for those who prayed for this ministry, who challenged our church to give more, who stepped in to provide help wherever needed and who fellowshipped with the seniors, showing them Christ’s love.!

A Summer of Giving

Pray for Our Pathfinders!Oshkosh 2014

This week, New Hope's Night Hawks, the scouting group for youth from grade 5 through high school, headed west (and north!) to Oshkosh, Wis., joining the horde gathering for the 2014 Forever Faithful Pathfinder International Camporee.!The event brings together tens of thousands of young people from more than 60 countries. Today marks the final day of the six-day extravaganza; please continue to pray for our youth, their families, club leaders and Pastor Ann Roda as they all make their way home!

Nearly three months ago, Angie Bernard challenged the congregation to contribute to this summer's round of food drives for residents at Morningside Park Apartments in Jessup, Md., as part of New Hope's Sharing Our Pantry: Food for Seniors ministry. !She quickly learned — right from the first food drive through the third and final delivery this past Sabbath — that the church was more than up to the challenge: An abundance of donations led the outreach ministry to quickly expand to include another complex, Tiber Hudson, as well as a nearby Mt. Zion United Methodist Church's Open Doors food pantry.!"The summer food drive was incredible, and God richly blessed," said Bernard, who organizes the ministry.!Sharing Our Pantry: Food for Seniors aims to help low-income seniors who often run of our money to buy food halfway through the month. It serves as an extension of sorts of a service program based in several area schools, filling the void when they are not in session during the summer months. On a designated Sabbath in June, July and August, Bernard and a band of volunteers collected bags from the congregation that were filled with donated grocery items and delivered them to residents at the complexes.!"I was amazed, humbled and in awe at how the church members were so personally involved in providing for the seniors," Bernard said. "Many families included personal notes, special treats and thoughtful additions to the shopping list."!Please continue to pray for the seniors, and stay tuned for when we reconnect with them for Thanksgiving dinner this fall — and next summer, of course!!!

By the Numbers:

Food for Seniors 3 food drives!

3 apartment complexes for low-income seniors!

263 total bags of food delivered 150 rolls of toilet paper donated by New Hopers Kevin and Cathy Bennett!

65 residents served at Morningside Park Apartments!

30 served at the Tiber Hudson complex

On Oct. 2, 2006, a milk deliveryman entered a one-room Amish school and shot 10 girls, killing 5. He then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide in the schoolhouse. This event shattered the peaceful Amish community and shocked the nation. However, what was even more astounding was the response of the Amish: forgiveness and reconciliation. The depth of forgiveness was demonstrated when members of the Amish community attended the killer's burial service at the cemetery, hugging the widow and other members of his family.

Amish faith is based on the teachings of Jesus to love enemies, reject revenge and leave vengeance in the hands of God. In a Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcends Tragedy, author Donald Kraybill writes that the “Amish believe that forgiveness means giving up the right to revenge. Unlike those who hire lawyers at every turn to protect their rights, the Amish yield to divine providence in the case of an unspeakable tragedy such as the one at Nickel Mines, believing that God's long arm of justice removes that need for human retaliation.”

What does it mean to forgive? The word itself means “to send away” or “to put away.” Forgiveness is the putting away of the things that would keep us apart. As a result, the aim of forgiveness is

reconciliation. It is when the wrong that brought estrangement between two people is put away. Forgiveness means we must be willing to put away, to let go of the offenses that are committed against us —to put away anything that would stand in the way of reconciliation.

Is there a relationship in your life that is broken? What is standing in the way of rebuilding that relationship? Are you willing to put it away so that you can experience true reconciliation? Think about it.
