Division

Hello everyone! As this is my last edition of“Chair's Corner” during myending stint as HydrogeologyDivision Chair, I want to beginby thanking the electedmembers of the Division'sManagement Board – SteveIngebritsen, Todd Halihan,Scott Bair and Brian Katz ina d d i t i o n t o t h e o t h e rappointed members of ourworking team – AndreaBrookfield, Mike Sukop,Maddy Schrieber and AliciaWilson for their service to theDiv is ion and fo r the i renthusiastic participation inconducting the business ofrunning and managing theHydrogeology Division thispast year. Any success, oraccomplishment I haveexperienced, or achieved inthis position I owe directly tothem. Thanks everyone!!!

Many exciting thingshave happened within theHydrogeology Division overthe past year, and severalothers are currently in the

works. By way of update, andfor your benefit, I'd like to offera brief summary of just a fewof them.

We are just weeksaway from what will prove tobe one of, if not the greatestHydrogeology technicalprogram at a GeologicalSociety of America (GSA)Annual Meeting in ourDivision's history. There arem a n y g r e a t s e s s i o n s ,fieldtrips, and activit iesplanned and I encourage themembership when you seethem in Minneapolis to offeryour words of gratitude andsupport to Maddy, Alicia andto all of the session Chairsand Co-Chairs for planning agreat meeting.

Work ing wi th theFrancis A. Kohout family andtheir generous gift to theDivision, your ManagementBoard has created the KohoutEarly Career Award. Uponreceiving approval of the GSACouncil at their Octobermeeting, the award will beg iven each year to adistinguished scientist who iseither thirty-five years of ageor younger, or who is withinfive years of their highestdegree or d ip loma foroutstanding achievement inc o n t r i b u t i n g t o t h ehydrogeologic professionthrough original research ands e r v i c e , a n d f o r t h edemonstrated potential forc o n t i n u e d e x c e l l e n c ethroughout their ongoingcareer. Watch for anannouncement about thisaward later this fall, and beprepared to nominate adeserving scientist.

A dear friend of theDiv is ion and a valued

professional colleague Dr.David M. Diodato hasg e n e r o u s l y c r e a t e d afoundation fund to provideGSA annual meeting travelgrants to hydrogeologystudents and to treat eachattendee to a cold beer at ourannual student reception.Join us in Minneapolis thisOctober for our first toast toDave at this year's studentreception. I want to publicallyand personally thank Dave forthis wonderful gift andexpress my appreciation tohim for all he has done and isdoing for our Division.

A new logo is on thehorizon. Changes in the GSAlogo policy required us tocreate a new logo. While ourfirst attempt to generate newideas (see last month's logocontest in the newsletter) wasnot as successful as we'dhoped it would be, we aremoving forward to create anew logo. If you have an idea,it's still not too late to submit itto our editor, Andrea. Oncecreated, we will work with awell-known apparel company(I don't want to spoil thesurprise) to make the logoavailable on a variety ofclothing items via a direct linkwith their website. This way,we don't have to maintain anproduct inventory and you canselect whatever item you wantand add our Division logo.Watch for more information onthis endeavor in the comingweeks.

In closing, I want to saya special thank-you to theHydrogeo logy D iv i s ionmembership for allowing methe opportunity to serve andfor entrusting me with the

stratigraphic modeling, and groundwater/surfacewater interactions. Dr. Fogg has produced a largebody of impactful papers, from which the awardcommittee recognized three seminal papers ashaving significantly advanced the science.

In support of Dr. Fogg’s Meinzer Award, three papers were cited (see inset). These papershighlight Dr. Fogg’s work related to the role ofcomplex geology in hydrogeology. The first paperdescribes his original work identifying the role ofcontinuity and interconnectedness of highconductivity zones in fluid and solute transport ofcomplex aquifers. Dr. Fogg demonstrated howwell-connected zones of highly conductivematerial among a system of otherwisedisconnected zones can completely alter avelocity field, illustrating the importance ofgeologic information in groundwater models.

The second and third papers illustrate Dr.Fogg’s contribution toward important advances indeveloping tools to better simulate transportprocesses in complex aquifers. The second paper,which is a collaboration with Dr. Carle, develops amethod to simulate complex geological featuresusing readily available core logs with transitionp r o b a b i l i t y - b a s e d i n d i c a t o r

geostatistics. This paper has served as thefoundation for numerous other publications andstudies further demonstrating the use oftransi t ional probabi l i ty geostat ist ics inhydrogeology.

The third paper is a collaboration with Drs.LaBolle and Tompson. In this work methods toavoid numerical dispersion in random walk particletracking simulations of solute transport in complexmedia with sharp interfaces are demonstrated. This demonstrates that unless a properinterpolation scheme is implemented thatsignificant mass-conservation errors will result inmedia with sharp interfaces separating regionswith contrasting hydraulic properties.

These advances have resulted innumerous publications on transport processes, including diffusion limitations to contaminantrecovery, convolution of groundwater ages andage-tracer concentrations, anomalous dispersionand tailing of concentrations, and stable isotopefractionation. Given these vital contributions tohydrogeology Dr. Fogg is this year’s recipient ofthe GSA Hydrogeology Division’s O.E. MeinzerAward.

The 2011 O.E.Meinzer Award willbe presented to Dr.Graham Fogg ofthe University ofCalifornia, Davis atthe HydrogeologyDivision luncheonat the MinneapolisGSA meeting. Dr.Fogg has spentover 30 yearsresearching andteaching abouttopics that include,amongst others,regional physicalh y d r o g e o l o g y,g e o s t a t i s t i c s

policy, and communication of complex scientificand technical issues to non-technical audiences.Throughout his career he has made ongoingextramural contributions that have advanced theprofession technically and in the public eye.

One of Dave’s most important contributionshas been in the public distribution of hydrogeologicinformation. He founded “The HydrogeologistsHome Page” in 1995, which is a source ofinformation on such things as modeling programs,Earth data and professional opportunities. In the17 years of its operation it received a visitation rateof 30,000 to 60,000 hits per month from all over theworld.

Dave also created the Software Spotlight inthe journal which criticallyevaluates software that is used for solvinghydrogeologic problems. This feature continues toappear in each issue as it allows end-users tomake informed decisions about purchases andapplication of the software products.

Dave has always been a strong advocatefor the involvement of students within the Division. He would go out of his way to ensure studentswould feel like part of the Division, and was oftenfound introducing students to more seniormembers. His establishment of the “Dave DiodatoStudent Travel and Beer Fund” is another way hecontinues to support and encourage studentparticipation within the Division.

The Hydrogeology Division would like torecognize and thank Dave for his many years ofunique and diverse contributions to the professionand the Society.

community by their clear and accessibleexposition of both the theory and practice ofgroundwater modeling.

Mary served on GSA’s council and theMeinzer Award Committee and is currently amember of the Penrose Medal Committee. She isthe recipient of the Division’s O.E. Meinzer Award, the M.King HubbertAward (NGWA), the C.V. TheisAward (AIH) as well as the distinguished serviceawards from the Wisconsin section of AWRA andthe Scientists and Engineers Division of NGWA.

Mary also contributed significantly directlyto the education of students through her 34 yearsas a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She taught scores of students the‘mysteries’ of modeling and served as majorprofessor for 49 students producing a total of 36Master’s and 19 Ph.D. theses. These studentshave gone to influential positions in academia, government and industry.

One of Mary’s most influential roles in thegreater Hydrogeology community was as editor-in-chief of the journal It was notedby John Bredeheoft in a guest editorial that Maryhad been a master at balancing the interests ofpractitioners, who desire papers that haveimmediate application, and academics, who wantcutting edge science, both openly and fairly.

The Hydrogeology Division would like torecognize and thank Mary for her many years ofservice, and for her contributions to thehydrogeology community as a committeemember, author, editor, teacher and mentor.
