  • New Images of the PRBB building

    Covered with more than 9.000 square meters of red cedar tree wood, the PRBB building will be one of the references of the coastline of Barcelona. For demonstration purposes the Consorci de la Zona Franca has built a new scale model that shows more details and is more realistic than the previous ones.

    As you can see in the new spectacular images at the homepage, the PRBB building counts with spacious light zones, extensive spaces within the structure and gardens around. The building has an eliptical shape of 114 x 74 meters and includes a groundfloor, two basements and nine floors. The laboratories and offices of the different research centers are between the first and seventh floor.

    The new scale model is at present at the headquaters of the Consorci an was disigned for the "Barcelona Meeting Point" fare, that took place between the 21st and 26th of october at the "Feria de Barcelona".

    Cobert amb més de 9.000 metres quadrats de fusta de cedre roig, l'edifici del PRBB serà un dels referents de la línia costanera de Barcelona. I per visualitzar-lo millor el Consorci de la Zona Franca ha encarregat una nova maqueta de l'edifici del PRBB que mostra més detalls -i més realistes- que l'existent fins ara.

    Com es pot veure als nous imatges espectaculars a la pàgina web, l'edifici del PRBB comptarà amb amplis espais de llum dins de la seva estructura i jardins al seu voltant. L'edifici tindrà forma el·líptica, té 117 x 74 metres, i compte amb una planta baixa, nou plantes al damunt i dues sota rasant. Entre la 1ª i la 7ª estaran ubicats els laboratoris i despatxos dels diferents centres de recerca.

    La nova maqueta es troba a la seu del Consorci, i va ser dissenyada per a la fira "Barcelona Meeting Point" que es va desenvolupar des del 21 al 26 d'octubre al centre d'esdeveniments Fira de Barcelona.

  • costera de Barcelona. Y para visualizarlo mejor el Consorci de la Zona Franca ha fabricado una nueva maqueta del edificio del PRBB que muestra más detalles -y más realistas- que la existente hasta ahora.

    Como se puede observar en los nuevos espectaculares imagenes de la página web, el edificio del PRBB contará con extensas zonas de luz, amplios espacios dentro de su estructura y jardines a su alrededor. El edificio tendrá una forma elíptica, mide 117 x 74 metros, y cuenta con una planta baja, nueve plantas por encima y dos bajo rasante. Entre la 1ª y la 7ª estarán los laboratorios y despachos de los diferentes centros de investigación.

    La nueva maqueta se encuentra en la sede del Consorci, y fue diseñada para la feria "Barcelona Meeting Point", que se desarrolló entre el 21 y 26 de octubre en el centro de eventos Fira de Barcelona.

  • Pedro Alonso talks about "Malaria - A Global Challenge: From molecules to international politics"

    On Friday, November 28th, at 12 am at the Sala d'Actes Josep Marull (Dr. Aiguader building) Pedro Alonso from the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona will give a talk about "Malaria - A Global Challenge: From molecules to international politics" as part of the "Sessió conjunta" of the Fundació PRBB. A central topic of his talk will be the malaria vaccine project at the Center of Health Research in Manhiça, Mozambique, where he is also appointed as Scientific Director.

    Pedro Alonso directs the Center of International Health and the unit of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. He studied medicine at the University Autonoma in Madrid followed by postgraduate courses at the University of London in epidemiology and public health in developing countries.

    In 1999 he received his PhD in medicine and surgery from the University of Barcelona. After working for 5 years at the Medical Research Council of Great Britain in Gambia (West-Africa) and 1 year at the “Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas” (CSIC) in Spain, he built up the unit of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona.

  • Primera trobada de la Comissió Gestora de la Aliança Biomèdica de Barcelona (ABB)

    El dia 10 de novembre es va reunir per primera vegada la Comissió Gestora de l’Aliança Biomèdica de Barcelona, una aliança estratègica que busca concentrar els recursos i esforços de les tres principals institucions de recerca biomèdica a Barcelona: el Parc Científic de Barcelona, l'IDIBAPS i la Fundació PRBB. Els membres d’aquesta comissió són: Joan Rodés (President), Màrius Rubiralta (Vice president) i Jordi Camí (Secretari), Ramon Gomis (IDIBAPS), Daniel Navajas (IDIBAPS), Antoni Juárez (PCB), Montserrat Baucells (PCB), Miguel López-Botet (PRBB) i Reimund Fickert (PRBB).

    Com a conseqüència d’aquesta trobada, destaca la decisió de posar en marxa el Consell Assessor Científic (intern), així com diversos grups de treball, tots ells amb la participació de membres de cada una de les tres institucions. El Consell Científic estarà integrat per 9 persones, tres per institució, i el Dr. Miguel Beato rebrà l’encàrrec de promoure la seva constitució en nom del PRBB. Els grups de treball tindran les

    temàtiques que trobareu a continuació, juntament amb les persones que hi assistiran en nom del PRBB: Comitè Ètic de Recerca Clínica (B. Ugena), Comitè Ètic de Experimentació Animal (M. Torá), Animals transgènics (R. Fickert), Proteòmica (D. Andreu), Transcriptòmica (J. Valcárcel) i Bioinformàtica (R. Guigó).

    Primera reunión de la Comisión Gestora de la Alianza Biomédica de Barcelona (ABB)

    El día 10 de noviembre se reunió por primera vez la Comisión Gestora de la Alianza Biomédica de Barcelona, una alianza estratégica que busca concentrar recursos y esfuerzos de las tres principales instituciones de investigación biomédica en Barcelona: el Parc Científic de Barcelona, el IDIBAPS y la Fundació PRBB.   • “Splicing regulation at the second catalytic step by Sex-lethal involves 3’ splice site recognition by SPF45”

    Lallena, M.J., Chalmers, K., Llamazares, S., Lamond, A.I. and Valcárcel, J. Cell, 109: 285-296 (2002).

    The paper investigated the molecular mechanism by which a Drosophila protein, Sex-lethal, regulates alternative splicing of its own pre-mRNA, a key event for sex determination in fruitflies. The process of splicing involves more than 150 proteins and small nuclear RNAs. The work identified a particular spliceosomal protein, SPF45, as the molecule that Sex-lethal inactivates to achieve regulation. It turns out that SPF45 is involved in the very last chemical step of the splicing process. In addition, SPF45 was found to be involved in the activation of a cryptic splice site caused by a mutation in the

    human beta-globin gene that produces beta-thalassemia, a defect in the synthesis of haemoglobin.

    Questions to Juan Valcárcel, CRG:

    What makes your publication an outstanding article? Alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs is starting to be appreciated as an important mechanism used by eukaryotic cells to expand the coding capacity of their genomes. All previously known mechanisms of splicing regulation worked by enhancing or inhibiting early events in the recognition of splicing signals, long before the complete set of spliceosomal components assembles on the pre-mRNA. The findings reported in this article opened the possibility that regulation could be achieved even at the latest step of the splicing process. This was counter-intuitive: imagine that someone wants to block the project of our PRBB building, and instead of stopping it at the start of construction, waits until the building is complete and then seals the doors… Another interesting point of the paper was that by interfering with SPF45 function, cells were induced to generate correct beta-globin transcripts despite of the beta-thalassemic mutation. May be one day we will have drugs targeting components of spliceosome to correct genetic defects or other diseases caused or modified by altered RNA metabolism.

    How was the publication process? Within five weeks of submission we got three quite positive reviews. The main issue raised by the reviewers was whether we had learned enough about the function of the splicing factor to provide a full picture of how regulation operates. We had in the meantime accumulated new data on how Sex-lethal and SPF45 interact with each other, so we could resubmit a revised version shortly.

    Did you have problems with the publication of your paper?

    The reviewers were convinced pretty fast. But the editor kept bringing up additional issues of her own and made us polish the text and presentation numerous times. We exchanged up to seven different versions with the editor -which took more than two months- without ever telling us whether the paper was going to be accepted. I think the editor finally gave up, and instead commissioned a minireview to explain the findings of the paper, which was published in a later issue of the journal.

    Could you tell us any anecdote? One of the phone conversations with the editor took place at her home in New York, where her dog was barking and making communication very difficult. During the

  • conversation I mentioned that I was attending a Transcriptome conference in Seattle the following week, and she told me that if I chose to present the data of the paper and there was any meeting report released mentioning the data before the date of publication, the paper would be rejected. So I had to chase the scientific journalists attending the meeting to ask them not to mention my presentation, which was odd, particularly because I think they were not planning to mention it anyway.

    Is this the most important publication in your career? It is the most unexpected finding we have made, and therefore the one that opened more new questions that can now be pursued.

    If you had to present this paper again, what would you do differently? I would ask even more people from outside the field to read the manuscript and give feedback on how to improve the clarity of the text and data presentation. I think that the value that clarity of data and presentation has for the fate of a paper in often underestimated, particularly by non-native english speakers.

    Any advise you would like to share with other researchers about the publication process? Peter Moore (co-discoverer of the structure of the ribosome) gave me the following piece of advice at the time of submitting this paper: "state clearly what your findings are and discuss them objectively without stretching the interpretation of the results and without avoiding unsolved issues. Nobody possesses truth; all that a paper can -and should aim to- provide is a first honest approximation."

  • Grup de recerca de Jordi Sunyer:“Effects on health of environmental pollution” de la Unitat de Recerca Respiratòria i Ambiental (URRA), IMIM.

    És difícil destriar els membres de la URRA en grups. Amb els altres caps de la URRA (Josep M. Antó, Manolis Kogevinas, Núria Malats, Jan Paul Zock) compartim projectes i persones. L’estudi dels efectes de la contaminació atmosfèrica sobre la salut té més de 15 anys d’història en el nostre grup. L’interès inicial va ser estudiar els efectes aguts de la contaminació urbana sobre l’exacerbació de l’asma i la malaltia pulmonar obstructiva crònica.

    Posteriorment, vam participar en estudis internacionals per estudiar l’efecte agut de la contaminació atmosfèrica sobre la

    mortalitat i l’hospitalització per totes les causes. Ara, els projectes que estem fent estudien l’impacte de la contaminació per vehicles a motor en la inflamació i reincidència de malalts amb insuficiència coronària, l’efecte de la contaminació de l’interior dels domicilis en la incidència de l’asma infantil i l’efecte crònic de la contaminació en el desenvolupament de les malalties respiratòries. Per altra banda, des de fa més de 10 anys estem estudiant l’impacte sobre la salut de la contaminació per compostos orgànics persistents.

    Els darrers anys ens hem centrat en l’estudi dels efectes d’aquests compostos en el desenvolupament neuro-immuno-endocri des de la primera infància. Aquests projectes compten amb la col·laboració de grups d’altres centres, principalment de Londres, Kuoppio, Munich, i Roma. Cap de grup: Jordi Sunyer.

    Preguntes a Jordi Sunyer:

    Quin ha estat l’assoliment més important del seu grup el darrer any? L’obtenció d’un ajut important per coordinar una xarxa de grups en estudis de cohorts de nadons per estudiar l’impacte de les exposicions ambientals més prevalents. Això ens permetrà contrastar hipòtesis, per exemple si hi ha una interacció negativa entre la durada de l’alletament matern i l’efecte neurotòxic dels organoclorats, o bé si aquest efecte és mediat per la disrupció tiroidal, en cohorts de-novo de dones seguides des de l’inici de l’embaràs. Pel que fa a publicacions durant el darrer any cal destacar la troballa que el DDE, un metabòlit del DDT, influeix per via transplacentària amb el nivell neuroconductual a l’any de vida; i que els contaminants que provenen dels vehicles a motor agreugen les malalties cardíaques, principalment l’infart de miocardi. Allò més recent es refereix a la poca influència de la contaminació interior per combustions domèstiques en les infeccions respiratòries en els lactants i la simptomatologia respiratòria en els infants.

    Quin es el seu desafiament més important ara mateix? Que la gestió de macro-projectes i la comunicació de resultats als participants i al públic no entorpeixi la producció científica i ,sobretot, que tot aquell que vulgui fer carrera en recerca no hagi d’acabar a la indústria privada.

  • Què és el més destacat del seu grup? L’interès per fer una recerca relacionada amb les angoixes i els neguits de la població.

    Quantes nacionalitats formen part del seu grup? La gent ve de tres països.

    Com a cap de grup ¿Quines experiències li agradaria compartir? Comparteixo la majoria de decisions amb la post-doc i la gestora, tant pel que fa la gestió econòmica com les decisions pròpiament científiques. Per altra banda, crec que la formació de científics, en aquest cas epidemiòlegs, és una de les nostres tasques i miro de ser el màxim d’accessible possible i compartir tot el que sé.

    Quina és la seva visió pel futur del grup? El problema crònic és l’estabilització del personal de recerca. A la URRA ja hem perdut grans científics en acabar la seva formació. El futur del grup vindrà determinat per la solució d’aquest problema en el conjunt del país i de la institució. Per altra banda, en el 6è Programa Marc de la UE el finançament de projectes de salut ambiental ha quedat molt retallat. Això a mig termini pot ser un inconvenient per a la continuïtat dels nostres projectes de llarga durada, com els estudis de cohorts infantils.

    Fui nacido hace 39 años en Talavera de la Reina, ombligo del universo, un lugar privilegiado para infanciarse y donde me deconstruí. Tras el COU, la diáspora de la adolescencia me llevó a defender a España del peligro antiperejilero: mili en Melilla en 1984 (Orwell tenía razón). Inicié Biología en el '85 por mi interés en Botánica y, coherenciando la trayectoria, me doctoré en immunología comparada en la Complutense, postdoctoreé la aterogénesis en La Princesa hasta el 96 y de ahí al Alzheimer, en Santiago de Chile, hasta que volví en el 2000 tarradelleando el “Ja soc aquí”. Desde entonces soy profesor de Fisiología en la UPF.

    Preguntas:

    ¿Qué es hacer ciencia para usted? Una forma de vida, creo que de las mejores.

    ¿Qué errores excusa fácilmente? Los que se realizan trabajando, pero nunca aquellos fruto de la desidia.

    ¿Qué le haría totalmente feliz? De forma genérica nada, pero dependiendo del momento sería un buen ron, una canción con historias, una buena conversación o el encuentro con la curvilinealidad ajena.

    ¿Qué es lo que más le molesta? La pasividad.

    ¿Dónde está su lugar favorito? Sangrilah está en mi mochila.

    ¿Quién es su personaje favorito en la ficción o en la vida real? Conan el cimmerio, rey de Aquilonia: el inmortal hijo de R.E. Howard, un loco de Fort Worth, y de los dibujos de Alcalá y Buscema.

    ¿Cuál es su música preferida? Según como transcurrió mi última estampida hacia la FNAC. En estos momentos sería un megamix del “Live” de Pearl Jam y Grandes Exitos de Leonard Cohen. Eclepticismo.

    ¿Su escritor favorito? Esto es algo que cambia bastante, con los granos de la adolescencia fueron Hesse y Marsé – división entre ser Demian o el Pijoaparte-, durante la carrera Yourcenar y Mann –creo recordar que Adriano vivió en un sanatorio para tuberculosos-, en el postdoc todos los latinoamericanos –con un especial recuerdo de Fata morgana con banda de música y del Señor presidente, Letelier y Asturias, e incontables más-, ahora me quedo con los magmas de Kawagata y la mala leche de Houellebecq.

    ¿Qué características aprecia más en una persona? El sentido del humor.

    ¿Cuál es su mejor defecto?

  • Ninguno, soy de la Pompeu.

    ¿Su ocupación favorita? El bricolaje con la Bosch, riding my bike y maltratar mi guitarra. El gardening lo guardaré para cuando mis articulaciones aventuren los cambios de tiempo.

    ¿Cuál es su característica principal? La tozudez.

    ¿Qué es lo que más aprecia de sus amigos? El relajo que me proporcionan, es bien egoísta pero espero que eso sea lo que mis amigos encuentran también en mí.

    ¿Cuál es su mejor sueño? Nada nuevo, todos los de la tradición cristiano-marxista, el realismo de pedir lo imposible y que por impasible humanidad hay que estar recordando everyday.

    ¿Qué talento le gustaría poseer? Un buen oído musical.

    ¿Su lema? Se lo robaría a Fassbinder: Ya tendrás toda la eternidad para dormir.
