JASON‟S JOURNAL – The Principal‟s Message You will have heard me say “It’s not ok to be away” as I often write about the importance of students regularly attending school and arriving at school on time. Persistent lateness remains a problem for a number of our students, as does unnecessary absences. Valuable learning time is missed and the habit of being late can be hard to break. As part of our mid-year reports acknowledges the importance of “time on task”, reporting on attendance and lateness. I will also be randomly speaking to students arriving late this month to investigate improvement strategies. REPORTING TO PARENTS Teachers are currently finalising mid-year reports for all children, which will be issued to parents on Friday 22 nd June. These reports will present parents with an up to date picture on their children‟s performance at school, both socially and academically. Reports take several hours per student to complete and I would like to thank teachers for their commitment to work late at night and on their weekends. In the final week of this term Tuesday 26 th and Wednesday 27 th June - we will then be conducting formal Parent Teacher Interviews to discuss mid-year reports, and to present student portfolio work. Once again we will be utilising the Parent Teacher Interview On-Line (PTO) site to facilitate these. More information about these parent-teacher chats and the booking process will be distributed tomorrow - remember to check with your child for your access code letter. Of course, as always, if you have particular concerns regarding your child‟s progress, an appointment can be made with your child‟s teacher at any time by contacting them via your child‟s diary, through the teacher‟s email, or via the school Office. RESTORATIVE PRACTICES AND CIRCLE TIME In the Lakeside NewsI often write about the importance of relationships, respect and responsibility. One of our key aims for our students is to teach them to build positive, supportive and respectful relationships with others in order to foster an inclusive environment and culture. Last week I mentioned the use of “Circle Time” in our classrooms - a social learning program designed to help students develop positive and supportive relationships and contribute to our school community. Circle Time is a teaching and learning approach based on students working and interacting together in a circle so that everyone has the opportunity to be heard and participate as equals. This is a highly effective approach, especially in developing students‟ social skills. Research shows that students who have well developed social skills, who feel included and are self confident, perform much better in the academic areas of their learning. Restorative practice in schools is the philosophy that over arches the student wellbeing and management framework and school community relationships. In a nutshell, the restorative process works to build and restore relationships in a participatory way. This includes re-visiting our student expectations, policies, programs, expectations, rights and responsibilities and communication skills. In conjunction with Circle TIme, restorative practice underpins the social and inter-personal relationship skills we explicitly teach our students to enable them to become, positive, self-assured and respectful members of our community. At Blackburn Lake Primary School, these programs and approaches are the building blocks we are using to continue to develop an inclusive, safe and respectful culture at school. No 18 14 June 2012

You will have heard me say “It’s not ok to be away” as I often write about the importance of students regularly attending school and arriving at school on time. Persistent lateness remains a problem for a number of our students, as does unnecessary absences. Valuable learning time is missed and the habit of being late can be hard to break. „EARN AND LEARN‟ - 9th MAY to 1st JULY

I remind parents who shop at Woolies to collect „Earn & Learn‟ stickers, as this program has the potential to provide valuable resources for schools like ours. The resources can range from classroom materials, to sporting equipment, music equipment and even furniture, all of which would be put towards supporting student learning. The program began 9th May and runs until 1st July. Families can deposit the “sticker cards” into the collection box (and collect new sheets) at the Office foyer and your support will be greatly appreciated.

„SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS’ - 13th JUNE to 14th AUGUST Coles started their vouchers for „Sports for Schools’ yesterday (13th June) which runs until 14th August. A box for the vouchers has been placed in the Office foyer. Last year we received a big box of sports equipment which has been put to good use by the students. Please start saving the vouchers for more sports equipment this year. STUDENT VOICE Empowering our students through meaningful involvement is an area that the school and staff have been promoting and developing over the last year. Most noticeable has been the involvement of Year 6 student leaders, such as School Captains and House Captains at assembly.

As well as all Year 6s having a formal student leadership position, two Junior School Council (JSC) representatives from each class meet monthly with Natasha Chidgey and Debbie McDermott – who I thank for their own leadership with these students. As regular agenda item at our School Council Meetings is the involvement of our student leaders. Two Junior School Council students attended this week‟s School Council to share a presentation they made to our JSC (pictured).

I hope to see you at our whole school Assembly tomorrow @ 3:00 to see our student leaders in action, enjoy a Choir performance, and acknowledge our „Students of the Week‟ Regards, Jason Walker – Principal [email protected]

At Blackburn Lake Primary, we engage in the ongoing assessment of our students. Much of this assessment is housed in our Student Portfolios, which is one of the tools we use to report to parents about their child‟s work habits and their personal and academic development. Within your child‟s portfolio you will find learning tasks which have been selected from a number of teaching and learning areas. As our teaching and learning embraces the whole child, your child will share classroom work that demonstrates this learning journey. Share the journey with your child, as it involved their head, heart and hands. When you receive your child‟s portfolio take time to reflect with them, chat about their goals and celebrate their successes. We look forward to sharing your child‟s learning journey during Parent-Teacher Interviews held throughout the final week of term. Loisia Steed Assistant Principal

OH& S REPORT Our school is currently undergoing an audit of our Occupational Health and Safety management systems. The aim of this review process is to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, staff and visitors. Processes are being reviewed and subtle changes are constantly being implemented to ensure that Blackburn Lake has the welfare of all, as a key priority. Within the next 12 months our school will be audited to ensure that we have met all the stringent OH&S guidelines. One of the recent changes that have been made, include the use of CB radios by all yard duty staff, to improve communication in the yard. Our Teacher Aides have also updated their first aid qualifications to Level 2 which has greatly increased our list of qualified first aiders. Suellen Hall OH&S Coordinator

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS!

Do you have an old mobile phone that you no longer use? We are collecting old mobile phones, batteries and chargers until the end of June.

These can be dropped in to the Mobile Muster Box located in the foyer near the Parents Association Mail Boxes. Phones are then sent off to be recycled. Ask friends, neighbours and relatives for their old phones, and see how many you can collect. If you collect lots of phones, bring them to Jacinta in 3J rather than putting them in the box. There will be a prize for the student who collects the most phones.
