GETTING THE PRINTING AND THE PAPER RIGHTThis issue is printed on recycled paper by Cox Printers. They are a local, New Jersey based printer that is partially powered by solar and wind. Rolland Enviro Print paper is derived from 100% post-consumer recycled waste. It is also FSC-certified and processed chlorine-free. The Rolland paper mill burns biogas, an alternative energy source obtained from methane gas emitted from a local landfill. Also, the additional electricity that is needed at the mill is generated from a local hydroelectric plant. We are very pleased with our printer and this environmental paper grade and anticipate that you will be, too.WWW.NJAUDUBON.ORG

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE—

TDear Members and Friends,

he need for conservation does not diminish in times of crisis; even in our isolation, the

natural world is where we all meet. Healthy forests are home to the wildlife we cherish, filter the air we breathe and the water we drink, and when we need comfort, hope greets us in an open field.

The vital work of New Jersey Audubon could not pause for a pandemic and, thankfully, our members were with us every step of the way. During this year of tremendous challenge, New Jersey Audubon delivered its mission with ingenuity and determination, through the loyalty and generosity of our donors. We kept health and safety first while guiding landowners in conservation practices that improve habitat, soil, and water. We advanced forest management that mimics natural disturbances needed to create young forest habitat for wildlife; restored critical wetlands, nature’s incubators, and sponges, and partnered in the recovery of declining and vanished wildlife. Seasonal migration watches proceeded without a break in the data that reveals long-term shifts and trends; and we formed a new coalition of nearly 30 organizations across the Atlantic Coast working to ensure the future of shorebirds and horseshoe crabs, a species key to healthy, functioning coastal natural areas.

When businesses – and even our parks – shut down, visitation spiked at New Jersey Audubon sanctuaries and trails. While we welcomed a rattled public following best health and safety practices to enjoy the serenity of our preserved open spaces, we also worked with the Governor’s Office to usher the safe and

expedient re-opening of city and state parks so that people of all communities could find healing in nature. With schools closed and weary parents looking to rescue their children’s education and spirit, New Jersey Audubon teacher-naturalists quickly pivoted to share nature through learn-at-home videos and virtual field trips available to all. As New Jersey became the first state in the nation to integrate climate education across the curriculum, New Jersey Audubon proudly hosted a summit with First Lady, Tammy Murphy, to highlight climate education opportunities. Virtual summer camps introduced Nature Quests that brought children and their families safely outdoors, and Gardening for Wildlife surged, transforming city balconies and container gardens, suburban yards, and lawns into havens for pollinators and other wild creatures.

Nature has sustained us through this year of anguish and uncertainty. As we move toward recovery, we are awakened to our reliance on a healthy, preserved natural world for the physical and mental health, educational, and economic benefits it provides. The care we take now to protect and steward our lands and wildlife will matter to us all for generations to come. Ensuring that everyone in New Jersey has safe and welcoming access to nature and can engage in conservation will define and transform our future.

Eric Stiles President and CEO

A HEALTHY FOREST IS A LIVING TREASURE layered with wonder, from its dappled floor and shrubby understory, to its sheltering canopy. Keeping forests vital is an ongoing process of managing threats caused by human encroachment. New Jersey Audubon partners with landowners on Forest Stewardship Plans that manage habitat for declining species and ensure a healthy and resilient forest for changing climate conditions. In 2020, our stewardship efforts positively impacted more than 10,000 acres, including forest and farmland in the Delaware River Watershed. Through our leadership of the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed, we successfully advocated for nearly $10 million in conservation funding. We tracked bog turtles and restored their habitat, created young forest habitat for the rare Golden-winged Warbler, advanced our Northern Bobwhite Restoration Initiative, advocated for increased prescribed burning, and celebrated permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

More than 100 Forest Stewardship Planning and Implementation projects advanced, positively impacting over

10,000 acres of forested land. We collaborated on 9 conservation plans, addressing habitat management on over 400 acres, and we advocated for the increased use of prescribed burns, which saw the NJ Forest Fires

Service and landowners conduct on more than 26,000 acres on public and private land throughout New Jersey.

Pinelands landowner outreach resulted in the recruitment of

thousands of acres for Northern Bobwhite

habitat management and prescribed fire application

with several hundred acres burned this year.

Surveys were conducted in the northwest corner of the state – the

last known area of New Jersey where Ruffed Grouse occur, utilizing young forest. New Jersey Audubon’s research will help determine a path of recovery for this declining bird.

Outreach to farmers resulted in the implementation of more than 20

conservation practices affecting over 5,000 acres. This included planting

6,500 trees along the Musconetcong River, a 4.5-acre cornfield converted

to native warm-season grass and wildflowers, more than 2.5-miles of fencing to protect wetlands and waterways, and the installation of cover crops and pollinator habitat.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund has provided $350 million

for land and water conservation projects over the past 50 years.

New Jersey Audubon successfully advocated for the passage of

the Great American Outdoors Act, which ensures permanent funding for these projects moving forward.

New Jersey Audubon continued leading the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed,

achieving a second round of federal funding for the Delaware River Basin Restoration Program in

the amount of $9.7 million

We provided meaningful support for the Recovering America’s Wildlife

Act, the Environmental Justice Act, Migratory Birds Treaty Act protections, and the Coastal

Barrier Resources Act.

The first occurrence of the rare Golden-winged Warbler was documented last spring in a patch of

young forest on Sparta Mountain where a young forest habitat had been created over a 6 years ago.

HORSESHOE CRABSWWW.NJAUDUBON.ORG

Page 9: New Jersey Audubon 2020 Annual Report

MYSTERIOUS AND SPECTACULAR, SHOREBIRD MIGRATION defines the essence of natural wonder. Yet this annual phenomenon is fragile, teetering on the brink of collapse. Horseshoe crabs so integral to the migration cycle are harvested for their special blood, which is used to test vaccines. Shorebirds continue to decline at Delaware Bay, with Atlantic Flyway populations of Semipalmated Sandpipers decreased by 80% since the 1980s. In 2020, New Jersey Audubon launched the Horseshoe Crab Recovery Coalition, working with pharmaceutical companies to adopt a synthetic alternative to using horseshoe crab blood in medical testing. The Coalition aims to restore horseshoe crab populations along the Atlantic Coast, and, consequently, the shorebird and fish species dependent on them. We also focused on climate change impacts, responsible offshore wind, and policy that helped achieve a ban on single-use plastics.

Semipalmated Sandpiper monitoring continued, with more than 1,000

birds banded and 25 solar-powered radio transmitters attached to assess their habitat use and stopover in

Delaware Bay.

Our research team attached digitally coded, solar-powered tags on

Semipalmated Sandpipers in Brazil and installed a third automated

tracking station to understand winter survival in northern South America.

Restoration occurred on 30-acres of high priority wetland habitat that

had historically been drained for agricultural purposes. Part of the

Delaware River Watershed Initiative, this effort will benefit the declining

American Black Duck.

Protection efforts advanced for the Federally Threatened Swamp Pink,

a species of the lily family that grows in forested wetlands.

New Jersey Audubon is a leader in advocating for responsibly

developed offshore wind, providing input on New Jersey’s selection of the nation’s largest single offshore wind project, which is predicated on the implementation of strong

environmental protections.

We successfully advocated for the regulation of single-use plastics, resulting in New Jersey adopting one of the strongest

plastic laws in the country.

We worked to protect against environmental rollbacks, including

the opening of offshore lease areas for offshore oil and gas

exploration and development, and the weakening of the National

Environmental Policy Act and Clean Water Act.

Restoration work continued at the Salem Bog Turtle site. We monitored 9 of these

state-endangered turtles and conducted habitat assessments at 7 sites, yielding 2 new turtles.

URBAN NATURAL SPACES can bring communities together, decrease violence, and inspire civic pride. Nature affords relief from the stress of our fast-paced society and, in times of crisis, serves as oases of solace and renewal. Learning to appreciate the natural world can inspire life-long caring and investment in its protection and stewardship. In 2020, New Jersey Audubon brought more than 400,000 people closer to nature through direct programming and a diversified platform of communications. Even through an ongoing health crisis, our teacher-naturalists engaged people of all ages in ecology, birding, nature exploration, sustainability, land stewardship, gardening for wildlife, and wildlife migration. We also educated teachers, who reached thousands of students utilizing STEM practices. Leading and working in partnership with several coalitions, New Jersey Audubon is supporting and empowering environmentally overburdened communities.

Through the Keep it Green Coalition, New Jersey Audubon secured legislation that will guide the expenditure of roughly $150 million for open

space, parks, farmland and historic sites and an additional $22 million from the state to fund

New Jersey state parks management and guard against proposed diversions from two important

local environmental grant programs.

New Jersey Audubon is working to protect pollinators from toxic pesticides, especially the use of neonicotinoids which are particularly harmful to bees.

We anticipate the passage of a bill this year designating these

pesticides as restricted.

New Jersey Audubon monitored bird populations in brownfield sites in Linden and Pennsauken, Data

collected provides a basis for managing bird populations

and guiding habitat restoration at these urban oases.

When local and state parks closed during the early months of the

pandemic, New Jersey Audubon trails and sanctuaries were open.

But natural spaces are not equally accessible to all our neighbors, and we worked to ensure the

safe and expedient re-opening of parks for everyone to enjoy the health benefits of nature.

New Jersey Audubon’s most beloved events continued:

transformed, bringing nature to an even wider audience through digital

technology. Our World Series of Birding-At Home version and Spring and Fall Festivals successfully raised awareness of bird diversity, while our new Birder’s Bucket List Bash quickly

became a favorite, highlighting global nature destinations and

engaging people around the world.

With funding from National Wildlife Federation and the PSE&G Foundation, New Jersey Audubon

collaborated with the New Jersey School Boards Association,

recognizing nine schools for innovative projects and prototypes designed to solve real world problems. New

Jersey Green Ribbon Schools were celebrated, and middle

school students and teachers were connected to environmental science learning through the BASF Nature of

Chemistry Kids’ Lab program.

Garden for Wildlife certifications increased by 47% in 2020, as city and suburban residents provided

food, water, and shelter for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. New Jersey Audubon launched its Gardening for Wildlife program to promote and engage people in

wildlife-friendly gardening.

We reinitiated our Newark Bird/ Building Collision Project to assess the frequency and causes of bird collisions with tall buildings and to recommend solutions. We’re advocating at the local, state, and federal levels for bird-safe

construction and mitigation strategies to lessen the number of bird strikes.

GIVING FROM YOUR IRA

WHEN CONGRESS PASSED THE PATH ACT OF 2015, the law permanently renewed the charitable IRA provision allowing those aged 70 ½ or older to make direct charitable gifts from traditional and Roth IRA’s to qualified charities up to $100,000 annually free from federal income taxation. This method of giving could benefit you in many ways, especially for those who must take required minimum distributions each year.

FOR MORE INFORMATION on how you can make a charitable gift from your IRA to New Jersey Audubon, please contact your plan administrator or Kimberly Armenti, VP of Development and Communications at [email protected] or 908-396-7405.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
