Pat Burns, 1952-2010      Pat Burns, who coached the New Jersey Devils to the 2003 Stanley Cup Championship, and served as a member of the team’scoaching staff the past eight seasons, passed away November 20 after a courageous bout with cancer at La Maison Aube-Lumiere inSherbrooke, Que.  He was honored prior to the November 22 game vs. Washington with a video tribute, moment of silence and PBpatch which was worn on Devils' home jerseys for four games through December 2.      The jerseys were signed by the team and are being auctioned off at auction.nhl.com to benefit La Maison Aube-Lumiere throughTuesday, January 11 at 9:00 PM.  Last game Sun., Dec. 26; Toronto 4 at New Jersey 1      The Devils faced the Maple Leafs for the second time this season (0-2-0) and first time at Prudential Center.  New Jersey out shotToronto in each period and 30-22 overall.      The Maple Leafs built a 3-0 lead through two periods, before Rod Pelley got the team on the board with a power play goal at 12:27of the third.  Mark Fayne and Andy Greene assisted on the marker.  For Pelley, it was his first goal of the season/first career powerplay goal, while Fayne registered his first career NHL assist.  Greene continues to lead all defensemen on the team in scoring with 2g-9a-11pts.       Martin Brodeur (39:55, L, 14 shots/11 saves) started his eighth consecutive game in goal and was replaced by Johan Hedberg(20:00, 8 shots/7 saves) at the start of the third period. InjuriesD M. Coming into tonight     On Dec. 23, Jacques Lemaire replaced John MacLean (9-22-2) as head coach.  Lemaire becomes the first coach to lead the teamon three separate occassions (Jun. 28, '93 - May 8, '98 & Jul. 13, '09 - Apr. 26, '10).  His 462 games, 247 wins, 61 post-season games,and 35 post-season victories are tops in franchise history.  Larry Robinson, Adam Oates, and Chris Terreri will remain in theircurrent roles and MacLean will remain with the club in a to-be-determined role.     The Devils continued a four-game homestand with a 4-1 loss Sunday night vs. Toronto.  Tonight, the club looks to avoid a season-high six-game losing streak dating back to Dec. 17 (currently tied at 5, Dec. 2-11, 0-5-0).       The Devils have scored on the power play in nine of the last ten games (11-39, 28.2%), including their longest streak this season ofeight games (Dec. 4-21, 10-30, 33.3%).  That ties the longest stretch since eight games, Oct. 28-Nov. 12, 2005 (10-44, 22.7%).  Theclub has held its opponent without a power play goal in 11 of the last 15 contests (45-50, 90.0%), including none over a five-gamestretch (Dec. 4-15, 19 attempts).       The Devils have lost nine in a row on the road, the third-longest stretch in franchise history (12, 10/19-12/1/83;  10, 1/23-3/5/83). Theteam has scored a power play goal in each of the past five road games (Dec. 4-21, 7-17, 41.2%) and not allowed a power play goal inthe last six (Nov. 26-Dec. 21, 23 attempts).     The Devils completed the 2009-10 regular-season with a 48-27-7=103pt (.628) record and no. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. The club clinched its ninth Atlantic Division Championship April 10, while reaching the 100-point mark for the 12th time over the last 15full seasons with a 7-1 win vs. NY Islanders.      The Devils posted their 18th straight .500-plus season, the longest current stretch in the league, and the longest current streakamong the four major sports.  New Jersey tied a league record with their 13th consecutive 40-win campaign (Mtl., ‘70-71 to ‘82-83).     New Jersey will finish a four-game homestand/close out the calendar year when they face Atlanta on Friday, Dec. 31 at 5:00 PM(MSG, SportsRadio 66 WFAN).  It will mark the club's ninth of 20 back-to-back contests (Jan. 1 at Car., 7:00 PM, MSG Plus,SportsRadio 66 WFAN).
