T he New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), Vaccine Preventable Disease Program received the 2015 Bull’s-Eye Award for the “Protect Me with 3+” adolescent immunization awareness initiative. Each year, the Association of Immunization Managers (AIM) presents the Bull’s-Eye Award to a state, territorial, or local immunization program in recognition of an outstanding immunization initiative. The award recognizes immunization strategies that "hit their mark," achieving goals and increasing awareness by encouraging replication in other programs. “Protect Me with 3+” is a collaboration between the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey (the Partnership) and the NJDOH in an effort to increase adolescent immunization awareness among NJ’s adolescents and parents. Created in 2012, “Protect Me with 3+” began as a contest that challenged NJ’s youth to create 30-second public service announcements (PSAs)/videos about one of the three primary adolescent immunizations: tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap); human papilloma virus (HPV); and meningococcal conjugate (MCV4). The Advisory Committee onImmunization Practices(ACIP) 2015-16

Recommendations for Preventionand Control of Seasonal Influenzawere recently published in theMorbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.A summary of what’s new this seasonis listed below.

There is no preferential recommendation forany one flu vaccine over another.

The ACIP continues to recommendthat all persons six months andolder be vaccinated annually againstinfluenza, with either live attenuatedinfluenza vaccine (LAIV) orinactivated influenza vaccine (IIV),with no preference expressed foreither vaccine when each one isotherwise appropriate.

During the 2014-2015 flu season,ACIP issued a preferentialrecommendation for the use ofLAIV in healthy children aged twothrough eight years who have nocontraindications or precautions. This decision was based on severalprevious studies which suggestedthat the nasal spray (LAIV) vaccinecould offer better protection thanthe flu shot (IIV) in this age group. However, in the absence of datademonstrating consistent relativeeffectiveness, preference for LAIVover IIV is no longer recommended. For more information, please visithttp://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2015/s0226-acip.html

Two of the vaccine virus components from lastseason were updated this season.

All 2015-16 influenza trivalent(three-component) vaccines are madeto protect against the following threeviruses:

v an A/California/7/2009(H1N1)pdm09-like virus

v an A/Switzerland/9715293/2013(H3N2)-like virus

v a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus.(This is a B/Yamagata lineage virus)

This influenza A (H3N2) virus and theinfluenza B virus components of the 2015-16 season trivalent vaccines havebeen updated from the 2014-2015 fluvaccine. Quadrivalent(four-component) influenza vaccinesalso will include a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like (Victoria lineage) viruscomponent, which is the same Victorialineage virus recommended forquadrivalent formulations during the2013-14 and 2014-15 flu seasons.

There is a new algorithm for one dose versustwo doses for children six months througheight years of age.

In light of the continuing circulationof influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 as thepredominant influenza A(H1N1) virussince 2009, and the inclusion of anA/California/7/2009(H1N1)-like virusin U.S. seasonal influenza vaccinessince the 2010–2011 season, separateconsideration of receipt of vaccinedoses containing this virus is no longer

On August 4, 2015 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) releaseda report that projected increases in drug-resistant infections and C. difficile andhighlighted the need for nationwide improvements in infection control and antibioticprescribing. The CDC recommends a coordinated approach between health carefacilities and public health agencies in order to prevent up to 70% oflife-threatening carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae infections over five years.Strengthening antibiotic stewardship could prevent 619,000 antibiotic-resistant andC. difficile infections and save over 37,000 lives in that time period. In a new video[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPP9ReyvY2s] titled “CDC Vital Signs– Making Health Care Safer: Stop the Spread of Antibiotic Resistance" the CDCspotlights how antibiotic-resistant germs are spreading between healthcarefacilities, even those that are practicing infection control and antibioticstewardship.
