Welcome to the Sunshine Corner!

I have heard some news about some of our club members other than what I reported last month, I was told:

Pete DePaola is doing well. He is waiting for some more tests to be run before his open heart surgery can be scheduled. The doctors are very confident of the success of the surgery and have told him not to worry, but of course as in any major surgery you will worry.

Nancy Zimmerman who had an eardrum replacement. According to her, she is fully recovered and the operation was a success.

Jon Tabasim had foot surgery – ankle joint replacement. He is laid for several weeks, unable to drive and is not getting around very well. What I have been told is he is getting around with the aid of Uber cars.

Christmas Ribs By Bob & Rita DePaola

Once again The Thunderbird Circle knows how to celebrate and did so in grand fashion. Holding our annual Christmas Party at one of Southern California’s premiere restaurants, The Newport Rib Company. Yes this is the location of some of the

finest ribs and chicken that ever came out of the smoker. Yes my friends, mouthwatering scrumptious food ever! With the all you can eat bar-B-Queued ribs and chicken was delicious baked pork-n- beans, vegetable melody and of course melt in your mouth cornbread covered in honey butter. Getting hungry yet? Six of us arrived first (Early). The banquet room was not quite ready for us to occupy it so we took a seat in a booth and ordered drinks. After toasting to each other’s health and Merry Christmas we waited. We didn’t have long to wait before several other members arrived. So the busboys worked feverously to complete the set-up. Seems they had held a banquet earlier in the day and they were slow in vacating the room. No problem, we just drank to each other’s health again. Before long the room was ready and we began to occupy it. Pete DePaola and Mary Everett took up a booth right at the entrance

so they could collect the dinner fee and anyone wanting to pay their next year’s dues. Rita DePaola had made several center pieces to decorate the tables. With the help of June LiPuma and Janet Walsh they began to set them up and in doing so they placed other items as well. A little candy here, a little candy there, a couple of Christmas balls here

and some more there. Then Rita placed some very special chocolate candy kisses all around on the tables, Rita had imported them

The light blue ones

directly from Hawaii. Have you figured out why they were so special? Well we will tell you, they are a Hawaiian exclusive, Hershey kisses with whole Macadamia nut in them. They are only sold in stores on the islands. They were a special treat from us to the club. Several members started going around and scooping them up. But there were still plenty to go around.

As everyone was mingling around they brought out

the food. It is our clubs tradition to give back to the members, so in this case even though the actual cost for dinner was $30.00 per person we charged each member only $15.00 per person. Such a deal! 50%

off. Then as usual our president, Ed Zaleski invited everyone by table to get some of this scrumptious food. He also reminded everyone to grab a shirt protector just in case.

Yes this year Sam Gregory had competition, Rita DePaola

Of course it was all you can eat and several members went back for seconds and even some for thirds. It was all so good. I guess that is why we have come back to this restaurant so many times. Plus the

service is fantastic. They really treat us well. I guess they like repeat customers. Once dinner was over and everyone had their fill we started the best part of the party. Each member had brought a present to be auctioned off for the good of the club. The value of each item had to be no less than $15.00. Some members even brought more than one. Pete DePaola and May Everett brought four plus he donated an exclusive 30th anniversary polo shirt from Disneyland. Now as you know Disneyland just celebrated its 60th year, so this shirt which was in pristine condition and still in the original package was already 30 years old. In addition to that he also donate a set of 12 oz. clear glasses trimmed in gold with a 1957 blue Thunderbird emblazoned on each one. Tom Peluso was our auctioneer with the assistance of Vanna White. No not really it was Rita DePaola playing that role. The bidding started and the room

was electrified with excitement. The bids rose and rose and rose until he could not get anyone to bid higher. Of course he and Vanna (I mean Rita) were the only ones allowed to touch each item and it was asked several time if the wrapped item was heavy or light. It seems that every item they picked up was heavy. As the prices were set, Dave Natali kept track of who had won which item and what was the highest bid.

California is still in a drought. With that being said, on

Friday the day before the Christmas Parade I

was planning on washing my

Thunderbird. Of course as it goes I didn’t even get a chance to because it was gloomy all day threatening to rain. We decided to hang the Christmas lights up. Just as we were putting on the finishing touches it didn’t rain “IT HAILED”. I know, in Southern California? Well it did enough that it left a blanket of the white stuff on the ground. It hailed for about 5 minutes then it began to rain for another 5 minutes. Then just like it started, it stopped. By this time is was getting cold and dark. So, knowing we had to leave early in the morning to get to our staging area for the parade, we get got up extra early and went outside to wash the bird. Sure it was cold (For us at least) it was 40° fortunately the bird was just dusty but drying her off in cold weather was a bear. Still a bit cold, but looking up there was not a cloud in the sky. We drove to our meeting area at the senior center at 8:00 AM where we met up with our other club members.

While waiting Glen Still said his oil light came on while driving to the senior center. Glenn, Ed Zaleski & I started to check things out. We came to the conclusion that the sensor was bad. Then Dan Jurenka arrives and said his oil light also came on. Now both of them have 57’s so what are the chances. Cold weather? We checked his as well & we came to the same conclusion. Unfortunately In reaching into the engine compartment Ed burnt both of his wrists. By 9:00 AM it was already warming up as we left for the parade route. This is where we decorate the cars. They get all gussied up for Christmas. From past year we have learned that

decorating the cars at the meeting location then driving to the staging area was not a wise choice as some of the decorations blow off as we have to drive on a main street and one year we even lost one of our door magnets on the way. So now we just wait until we get the staging area to decorate.

The theme for this year's parade was “California Dreamin”. This was the 26th year the parade has been in existence. We have participated in the past 5 years. The Celebrity Grand Marshal this year was Kate Flannery. Kate is a comedic actress best

known for her 9 seasons as

Meredith on NBC's

THE OFFICE. In addition to

Kate, they also had as the Teen Celebrity Grand Marshal Cameron Boyce Star of Disney XD's 'Gamers Guide to Pretty Much Everything. He

is best known for his roles in the feature films Mirrors, Eagle Eye, Grown Ups, and Grown Ups 2, as well as for his co-starring role as Luke Ross on the Disney Channel comedy series, Jessie. To round out the celebrities was Celebrate Guest Chris Jacobs the host of TLC's Overhaulin' he has also had roles in roles in The X-Files, CSI, Touched by an Angel and Two and a Half Men.

This year we had our newest members join in the parade, John & Karen Winter joined us in their

beautiful 2002 Thunderbird Blue Thunderbird. Their Thunderbird only has 7,000 miles on it and her paint is in pristine condition. Even they got into the spirit of Christmas and decorated their Thunderbird.

The parade was lead off by the USMC mounted color guard from Barstow, Riverside County with a contingent of US Marines from the 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Division from Camp Pendleton, appropriately followed by the US 1st Marine Marching Band also from Camp Pendleton.

Following the Marines was company of sailors from the USS Stockdale, DDG 106. The Stockdale is a US Guided Missile Destroyer whose crew and the ship have been adopted by the City of Laguna Niguel.

There were a total of 98 entries in the parade, which we were #31 and glad we were. The parade was 1.1 miles with a slight downgrade almost all the way. It

turned out to be another great Southern California day for a parade, weather included. The parade proceeds down Crown Valley Parkway and ends at

Niguel. During the parade route there were five locations where the announcers would give a description of the entry in the parade. As we got

close to each one they were sure to play on the theme of the parade and our Thunderbirds seeing our cars are closely associated with the theme. You can’t get any closer to the California dream than driving your Thunderbird with the top down even during the winter on some clear sunny California beach day. Yes it is the way to go, Sun, Surf, Sand and drivin’ your baby in a Thunderbird with the top down. Who could ask for more? Afterwards some of us drove down to the end Crown Valley Parkway and we met up again at the

Salt Creek Grille which is at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway. If you drove any further you would get all wet. Below is the view from the porch of the

restaurant over the Pacific Ocean. Yes that low outcropping is not fog but Santa Catalina Island. Ever hear the song by the Four Preps, 26 miles across the sea Santa Catalina is a waiting for me? Yep that is it Santa Catalina Island is just 26 miles off the coast of Laguna Beach, California. Surprisingly it was such a clear day that when we drove back home to Anaheim Hills you could see Mt.

Baldy, part of the San Gabriel Mountain chain reaching over 10,000 feet with their white capped maintains. For those not from Southern California the drive from the beach to the snow is about an hour and a half. So to say you can water ski and snow ski within a few hours is understandable. Especially seeing the temperatures during the Christmas holidays in the mornings are normally in the 40’s than by mid-day are in the 70’s.

To everyone happy and prosperous New Year

Make Health Your Resolution Make healthy food choices. Grab a healthy snack

on the go. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Be active. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Park farther away and walk. Protect yourself from injury and disease. Put on a

helmet, sunscreen, or insect repellent. Wash your hands for 20 seconds.

Manage stress. Don’t overschedule or overcommit. Take short breaks throughout the day.

Make an appointment for a check-up, vaccination, or screening.

Quit smoking. Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free counseling on how to quit smoking for good.

Take Flic Acid Everyone needs the B vitamin, folic acid; Take a daily multivitamin that contains 400

micrograms (400 mcg) of folic acid. Check the label to be sure it contains 100% of the daily value of folic acid--which is 400 micrograms (400 mcg).

Eat a bowl of breakfast cereal that has 100% of the daily value of folic acid every day. Not every cereal has this amount. Check the label on the side of the box, and look for one that has "100%" next to folic acid

Learn the Signs of Heart Attack

A person’s chances of surviving a heart attack increase if he/she seeks and receives emergency treatment as soon as possible. It's important to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and act quickly. If you think that you or someone else is having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. Take a few minutes to learn the major signs and symptoms of a heart attack: Chest pain or discomfort Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, back, arms,

shoulders, or stomach Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint Shortness of breath. May occur with or without

chest discomfort. Other signs and symptoms that a person may have during a heart attack include: Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach) or vomiting Breaking out in a cold sweat Lightheadedness Cold Season Is Upon Us

When you have a cold, don’t over exercise. It uses up the body’s reserve, and you need that to fight winter colds. Exercise in moderation. If the Flu knocks you off of your feet, with high fever, aches and pains, nausea, possible diarrhea, possible difficulty breathing. You may have a virus and need to see a Physician.

Zinc lozenges help.

Alcohol consumption. The reason you get “drunk” is because alcohol replaces oxygen in your bloodstream. The lack of oxygen causes the dizziness. Eventually this starves the brain and organs, including your eyes, of the needed oxygen to be healthy. It also batters your immune system so you will get frequent colds that don’t get better within a week. Drink moderately.

Sleep. If you tend to drink alcohol to get to sleep, it will backfire on you. Alcohol initially acts as a depressant and a relaxant, but then that reverses in a couple of hours into a brain stimulant and will worsen your insomnia.

Smoking can be cut back by using the drug store lozenges called commit. Alternate every other cigarette with a lozenge to start. They will kill the craving to smoke.

IGNITION COILS Retro Birds

The ignition coil gremlin has struck again, this time taking out a 2003 retro bird. Apparently this is quite an ongoing problem with the retro birds and many club members have already had the coils replaced by Ford under warranty or have replaced them themselves. The culprits are called coil-on-plugs, also known as COP’s or ignition coils and when one of more goes out. It can cause the engine to “miss” and run rough. Some owners have said that the “check engine” light will flash. According to members of the South Texas Thunderbird Club, Ford sent a letter in May, 2008 to all owners of 2003 Retro that Ford would cover the cost of replacing the coils under their 10 years or 100,000 mile warranty program. This was also extended to the 2004 and 2005 models. The South Texas Thunderbird Club members suggest that if you have a 2005 retro that is still under warranty, you might want to get the dealer to check the coils before your warranty runs out. However, for the 2003 and 2004 owners, this means that you will have to either: (1) take your car in to the dealer and pay an arm and a leg to have them replaced or (2) order the coils yourself and have your personal mechanic replace them. Club members say that coils can easily be ordered on line from AIP Electronics at about $18.00 per coil. These are the same type of coils that were originally installed in the car. I suggest that all eight be replaced at the same time. Although you may be able to find them cheaper on Amazon, however I’m not sure these are inferior quality of coil and am unsure about using them. Cars with the AIP Replacement coils are still running strong, one with close to 100,000 miles on it.

If you have a cold, your body’s vitamin and antioxidant reserve is used up so you must supplement to boost your immune function. Take a multivitamin and at least 500 mg of Vitamin C, but never more that 2000mg a day. For cellular repair take Coenzyme Q10. You already have it in your body but it is used up rapidly during a cold. The % daily value of Vitamin C is 75-90 mg. One citrus fruit and the juice, as well as red and green pepper or kiwifruit, contains the minimum amount of % daily value of vitamin C.

For March plans are to participate in the Festival of Whales Parade in Newport Beach. Last year our cars were literally a showstopper by onlookers wanting to take pictures of our wonderful cars. Happy 2016 to all, and see you soon at our events. Ed Zaleski

Then it was our president’s turn to ask for volunteer’s to run for office. As each office was filled a sigh of relief came over the members knowing our club would have another year of great leaders.
