Sollas has developed

an overwrapper for a

major cosmetics

company that required

a faster, more cost

effective and more

efficient machine to

achieve its ‘lean’

manufacturing goals.

The FSX is suitable for

every company where

the existing

overwrapper is a

bottleneck in the

production flow, says

the company.

The development of the

FSX started with the customer

requirement for an overwrapper

that delivered a changeover

time of less than ten minutes.

The machine also had to

overwrap 45 different single

products with a maximum

output of 80 a minute as well

as having the ability to handle

Wrapping up savings

multipacks of three.

There was also a

requirement for change parts

to be in a fixed position with

minimal use of tools for

mounting, while the three

dimensional adjustments for a

changeover need to be done

automatically, and not by

hand. Finally, this new

machine had to

have a small

footprint as it

was to be

placed in

an existing

line.

To customers

of Sollas SX

machines, the visual

similarities between its

existing equipment and

the FSX may seem

obvious, but a closer

look reveals that the

technology used is very

different. The company

believes that this

overwrapper represents

a breakthrough in this

technology.

Sollas says this new

machine is the first fully

servo driven

overwrapper with a small

footprint that combines

flexibility with high speed.

With the optional servo

adjustments, controlled by the

product data, stored in the

PLCs database, the machine

can calculate the required

settings by itself and adjust

automatically to the

appropriate dimensions.

It is the intelligent use of

servo technology that has

allowed Sollas to create a

machine on which a

complete product changeover

can be achieved within ten

minutes.

Italian manufacturer PFM

has broadened its range of

wrapping equipment for the

cheese and sliced meat

markets with a new high

speed MAP flow wrapper

able to produce both

reclosable packs and

standard pillow packs.

Capable of speeds up to

100 a minute in reclosable,

MAP mode, the new

Scirocco-ZIP uses either

zipper or mini-hook profile

yet can be changed over to

produce pillow packs at

speeds up to 150 a minute in

less than 20 minutes.

An inverted machine, it

accepts product onto the

film, which then carries it

through a forming box set at

90 deg to normal, so that the

longitudinal seal is made at

the side, where the zipper

tape is also introduced and

sealed in place.

To maintain speed, the

zipper profile is punched to

remove most of the polymer

where it intersects with the

cross-seal, reducing overall

film thickness at this point for

the single D-cam sealing

mechanism to produce a

reliable hermetic seal with

minimum dwell.

When conventional pillow

packs are required, the film

forming stations are

exchanged for a traditional

forming box and fin seals are

made from above by an

additional longitudinal sealing

mechanism, which lowers

automatically into place via a

motor drive.

Built to food industry

MAP cheese wrapperprovides dual options

hygiene standards, the

Scirocco-ZIP is also

equipped with a multi-belt

feeder to phase product

accurately into the infeed.

The feeder is cantilevered,

so that belts, support

plates and drive roller

sleeves can be quickly

removed for cleaning.

“The Scirocco-ZIP will

allow food manufacturers

and particularly contract

packers to take advantage

of growing interest in

reclosable packaging for

sliced cheese and meat, but

maintain complete

production flexibility,”

added two new bench top

banding machines to its range.

The Jenton TT180 is the

smaller of the two, and is

designed for banding small

products. Boasting a

compact design, with a

footprint of less than 15in sq,

it weighs just 15kg. It bands

at up to 25 cycles a minute

for high efficiency operation.

The unit comes complete

with simple tension

adjustment to suit the

Beumer has fundamentally

re-engineered its high

capacity layer palletiser – the

paletpac to offer a total value

of ownership. Users now

benefit from better

accessibility, shorter assembly

period, higher flexibility and,

as a result, from lower costs.

They paletpac 2500 can be

incorporated into high

performance packaging lines

to process highly sensitive

and valuable products in a

gentle and efficient manner.

As well as a lower purchase

price, the new optimised

model can also bring a

reduction in operating costs.

For instance, in order to

optimise the energy

consumption in the new

paletpac, the lifting frame was

Efficient way to stackaccuracy and stability

exchanged for four chains with

a counterweight. This saves

considerable weight, thus

minimising the energy needed

for the lifting movement.

The pallet is now pulled by

chains whereas previously, a

large hoist drive was needed

for the system. Now, a small

motor operating as a servo

drive is sufficient which, says

Beumer, results in further

weight reduction, less

maintenance and lower costs.

The overall structure of the

unit has also been made

considerably slimmer, the

pallet pusher that

automatically provides the

hoist unit with empty pallets

has also been modified and it

can be adapted to different

pallet sizes without the use

of tools.

With the paletpac 2500, up

to 2,500 bags an hour can be

palletised.

Saving waterfor brewersWith the Eco vacuum pump,

KHS can already help the

brewing industry to save

almost 100% water

compared to the traditional

water ring pump. However,

the new KHS Eco+ vacuum

pump, or rather, the newly

designed Eco+ module

integrated into the Eco

vacuum pump, now has the

added benefit that classic

coolants for water recooling

can be a thing of the past.

This means that brewers no

longer have to invest in

piping for coolant transfer

that is often complex and

costly.

Vacuum pumps are used

for low-pressure gas

exchange before beer is

filled into bottles, thus greatly

reducing the amount of CO2

consumed by the system.

Classic water ring pumps

draw in the air present in the

bottles and compress it using

rotors (that operate with

water).

With the new system, the

pump no longer needs this

permanent addition of cold

water to maintain the

required and consistent high

level of power thanks to the

inclusion of a pre-separator

and heat exchanger.

The pre-separator

segregates return gas and any

beer foam that may have

entered the process. The gas

is then discharged as normal

from the sealing water tank,

with the water passing through

the heat exchanger and

cooled down to a temperature

which ensures that the initial

power is maintained.

When the KHS Eco+ is

applied, classic coolants

become redundant and

therefore no piping is needed

for them.

Linx Printing Technologies has

launched a range of scribing

laser coders that are said to

offer the most efficient

production line solutions with

no compromise on quality.

The 10w Linx SL102 laser

coder is ideal for users with a

fast line and simple code

requirements, or a slow line

with a more complex code.

It offers a flexible solution for

quality coding onto a wide

range of materials.

Meanwhile, the high speed,

low maintenance 30w Linx

SL302 laser coder produces

quality coding for complex

codes on fast lines, even on

hard to mark materials.

Its versatility means it can be

adapted to future coding

needs such as changes in line

speeds, message types or

products to be coded.

Installation onto a line is

made easy as the laser can be

positioned to code in any

orientation so customers are

not restricted to placing the

laser in just one position.

Linx says the laser coders

are now more intuitive

and easy to use as they

incorporate the new LinxVision

colour touch screen,

incorporating a large

WYSIWYG display for simple

operation.

“The new range offers

versatility, reliability and ease

of use without compromise,

and the option to code a wide

range of substrates on the

most challenging of production

lines,” explains Dan Levitzky,

product manager at Linx. “We

can create a tailored solution
