To support the growth of

the new media industry

in Western Canada

through collaborative innovation initiatives

What is New Media?

• Interactive communications that combine moving images and/or sound with graphics and text in digitized form

• The convergence, coordination and integration of multiple media to present information in interactive formats

• Interaction allows participants to navigate through material by following links or by immersing in an interactive environment called a virtual world

NewMIC’s Mandate

NewMIC will address the following issues:

• Attracting and retaining excellent faculty and graduate students in the area of new media

• Building excellence in new media innovation

• Creating more skilled IT workers and industry clusters

• Developing better industry-university collaboration for the purpose of technology transfer

• Encouraging the transfer and commercialization of technology through incubation support

• Attracting venture capital to the New Media industry

NewMIC Innovation Areas

NewMIC is an application-driven laboratory dealing with the design, creation and dissemination of information technology, tools and well-trained graduates in:

• education, including online distance learning, educational software, and authoring tools

• telecommunications, including wireless applications and services

• entertainment, including computer and video games, theme parks, film, TV, and music

• other major interactive multimedia networked appli-cations, including electronic commerce

• the production, in cooperation with other BC Universities, Colleges and Institutes, of high quality courseware for distance and classroom learning in BC and beyond

• commercialization of new technology and creation of spin off companies
