Yesterday’s Memory by Tom Turbiville

Today was a special day. My College Station Noon Lions Club

volunteered to haul luggage for campers at the Texas Lions Camp

in Kerrville. The camp is 70 years old and is funded totally by

Lions clubs in Texas. Campers’ families pay zero. Campers are all

special needs kids. This was the last of Nine one-week sessions

and was for kids with diabetes. More than 200 campers this

session alone.

My brother Charlie, who was deaf, was a camper here in 1959,

when it was called Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children. I can

remember attending his closing ceremony at the amphitheater

which is still there. What a rewarding experience.

Name and Logo

• The official name of the association is “The International

Association of Lions Clubs” or simply “Lions Clubs

International.”

• The name Lions was chosen on a secret ballot over

several others because the Lion stood for strength,

courage, fidelity, and vital action.

• The Lions logo consists of a gold

“L” on a blue field surrounded by a

gold circle. On both sides of the

circle are profiles of a Lion head,

one looking back upon a proud

past and the other looking

optimistically toward the future.
