February is usually the month that we associate with love.  With the avalanche of Valentine’s Day cards, candy and the like, we find ourselves prompted to express the love we have for others.

This month we will be focusing on all the different things there are to love about Cross Roads, as well as what we have learned that needs some adjustment.

On the first Sunday in February we will begin a month of looking at how to love better and how to learn more.  We will

hear stories that help us focus on loving our neighbor and seeking justice for them here.

On the second Sunday we will have a “state of the church” conversation in worship— where we will share the summaries of the Holy Cow CAT survey that you all faithfully participated in, and what that might mean we will be concentrating on next.  This will dovetail into our annual meeting where we will share what was accomplished in Christ’s name in the year past, and how the changes in the budget will guide some of our decisions moving forward to be faithful stewards of all that we have as a community faith.

On the third Sunday we will look together at what it means to speak truth in love to one another and to ourselves.

On the fourth Sunday we will be welcoming new members and baptizing a baby.  We will explore together how we love those who are new to the family of faith and what that means for how we worship and serve together.

I look forward to worshipping with you all and sharing the love that we receive from Christ!

Peace,

Pastor Sarah

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’  This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

Farewell to Our Music DirectorDear Cross Roads Community,

I am writing this letter to inform the members of Cross Roads Church that I will be resigning from my position of Music Director/Organist. I have accepted a similar position at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fox Chapel. After several weeks of praying and asking God to help me with my decision, it seemed to me that He was leading me to a path of something new and different. Believe me when I say, leaving a comfortable position after twenty-one years to try something new and different is terribly frightening. I grew up in the Lutheran Church and started my career as an organist at my home church way back in 1978. There is something quite intriguing to have an opportunity to return to the roots of my early church life.

Cross Roads is my church and will continue to be my church. Kerry’s baptism was at Cross Roads. Kelsey will be married here in June of this year. Debbie will continue her work at Cross Roads. She remains dedicated to working with the Children’s Choir and she may even become more involved in the musical life of the church. I would like to thank her for her musical gifts and for her support of my decision. I would like to thank Pastor Sarah and Patty Winter for their friendship, advice and support. I would like to thank the entire congregation for their support and encouragement over these twenty-one years. Most of all, I would like to thank all of the wonderful people in the Handbell Choir and the Sanctuary Choir. They work so hard every week to bring music to God in our worship services, which helps bring God closer to this congregation. Each choir member has been a testimony to my life, each have taught me a great deal, and each have helped me on my Christian journey. I cherish each one of them and will never forget the musical work that we did together to serve our great God.

Again, Cross Roads is my church. I will continue to support the ministries of the church and I look forward to the work of the PNC and the vision that God has in store for the church and its people. I will continue to pray for the people of Cross Roads and I ask for your prayers as I make this transition.

In His Precious Name,

Randy Broker Randy Broker’s last day with us will be Sunday, February 2.

Thank God for Good Music“Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul,” said Martin

Luther. Bernard Berenson put it this way: “On the wings of music we soar above and beyond nature, farther than any other vehicle can carry us.”

King Saul often became depressed and inwardly tormented. Some of his servants thought he could find relief by listening to music. The king heard about Jesse’s son David, who skillfully played a lyre (some translations read “harp”). Saul sent for David and heard him play. Saul was so helped by the music that he asked David to join his court. Thus we read in 1 Samuel 16:23, “Whenever the evil spirit … came upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand, and Saul would … feel better” (NRSV).

Music is an important part of our worship experience. The staff and members of Cross Roads offer our deepest thanks and appreciation to Randy Broker for more than 20 years of leading us in music that “calms the soul” and allows us to soar! You will be missed!

From the TreasurerChurch Family,

As you all know, Cross Roads began a capital campaign to celebrate the 50 years of our beautiful church back in 2017.  As 2019 comes to a close and we start a new year, this campaign officially comes to an end.  With your generosity we were able to make great strides in upgrading our church.  A few of the projects that stemmed from your giving are the electronic sign, upgraded lighting on the church grounds, expanded WiFi network, repairs to the sidewalk, and renovations to the parlor.

I would personally like to thank all of you who were able to contribute over the past two years.  While this campaign may be over, I would encourage everyone to prayerfully consider continued contributions to the church's general budget.  Expenses covered in our yearly budget include staff wages and benefits, utility bills, maintenance of the church, and support for each committees programming, etc.  In addition, you have an opportunity to invest in our security

upgrade that was approved at the December congregational meeting.  I would encourage you to check the security fund display board and help us reach our goal of $25,000.

Lastly, please remember to send in your 2020 estimate cards (Pledge Cards).  These can be found in the pews, the church newsletter, and the church office.  You can return them to Martha, myself, or place them in the offering plate any Sunday in January.  Having the estimates assists the finance committee, session, and myself as we prepare the 2020 budget to be presented at the February 9th annual meeting.

Again, thank you all for your continued financial support.  I look forward to an amazing 2020!  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Thanks,Dominic ZappaCross Roads Church Treasurer

Annual MeetingThe Session of Cross Roads has called a meeting of the Congregation

and Corporation of Cross Roads Church for Sunday, February 9 at 12:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. At this meeting we will receive the 2019 Annual Reports, elect members to our Nominating Committee, receive the 2020 budget, and conduct any other business as appropriate.

A luncheon will be available prior to the meeting, prepared by our Junior and Senior high youth as a fundraiser for their summer mission trips. There is no set cost for the lunch, but donations will be accepted.

The Annual Report to the Congregation will be available on the church web page, CrossRoadsPresbyterian.com, a week prior to the meeting. A limited number of paper copies, for those without internet access, will be available following worship on Sunday, February 2. In order to be good stewards of our resources, please review the full report on line and print out only those pages of particular interest to you.

Please make every effort to attend this important day in the life of the church.

New Committee Structure Announced

The Session has adopted a plan that will enable folks to participate in leadership and committees without having to attend quite so many meetings.

Here are the highlights: The new committee structure consists of four committees meeting each month on a regular basis.

They are Finance, Mission/Outreach, Christian Education and Worship/Music. These committees have agreed not to meet on Thursdays, so that anyone who would like to

participate in choir and bells may be free to do so without trying to be in two places at once or feeling that they must choose.

The Session will be moving to the fourth Wednesday of the month so that all of the committees (and Deacons/Trustees) will have had a chance to meet before we gather.

Elders will be asked to serve on only one committee— so that they don’t need to attend more than two meetings a month.

committee (the configurations for these two committees will largely remain the same)2. Week 1 is the first full week of the month3. The chairs will pick the night of the week each board or committee will meet4. The Finance committee is a consolidation of Finance, Planned Giving, and Stewardship5. The Mission & Outreach committee is a consolidation of CCI, Evangelism, and Fellowship and will

also take over the fundraising opportunities that used to fall under the Deacons 6. Meetings should not be held on Thursdays so that members can participate in the choir and/or

handbell choir7. The meeting pairings were chosen with the goal that members and staff would only need to attend

one meeting per week at a maximum8. With the pared down committee structure and configurations, the goal is to have the committees plan

and lead events; however, volunteers will be needed to help run them

This month we are reading “Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker” by Jennifer Chiaverini. In Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker, novelist Jennifer Chiaverini presents a stunning account of the friendship that blossomed between Mary Todd Lincoln and her seamstress, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Keckley, a former slave who gained her professional reputation in Washington, D.C. by outfitting the city’s elite. Keckley made history by sewing for First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln within the White House, a trusted

What Are Those

Envelopes In My

Box? If you’ve picked up your box of offering

envelopes for 2020, you may be wondering about the first three envelopes in the box: Initial Offering, Per Capita, and “I’m So Blessed.”

Our sets of offering envelopes cost about $5 each, with a total cost to the church of just under $1,000. The “initial offering” envelope gives you an opportunity to make an additional donation, above your pledge, to help offset the costs associated with providing these boxes of envelopes to you.

The “Per Capita Apportionment” is a $35 fee we must pay per member to Pittsburgh Presbytery to help fund their work. Your extra donation of $35 per member in your household to that fund helps offset the nearly $14,000 bill.

The “I’m So Blessed” special offering is an opportunity for you to pass on the blessings you receive as a donation to our mission fund, any time you are feeling especially blessed and want to pass it on!

All three of these are designed to be additional gifts to the church, not included in your pledged donation to the general fund for 2020. Thank you for your generous support of Cross Roads!

Mission Partner Spotlight

Where do Cross Roads Mission dollars go? Cross Roads supports Presbytery approved nonprofit organizations. This month we’d like to spotlight one of those nonprofits – Angels Place, a local charity for young mothers.

Each day, single parents come face-to-face with difficult decisions. Who will take care of your child while going to school or work each day? How will you be able to provide the emotional support your child needs? Angels’ Place helps determined parents secure a brighter, more stable future by providing quality early childhood education, child care and family support at no cost or at significantly reduced rates to families in need. Our work is to ensure that every family in our community – particularly those in need – has access to the resources to succeed in school and in life. Since 1984, Angels’ Place has worked to create systems that strengthen the family, support parents to complete their educational goals and obtain satisfying employment, moving toward self-sufficiency. More information can be found in the hallway on the bulletin board across from the Current Happenings board.

The Very Best ValentineAlmost everyone — at least of the female persuasion — knows the romantic meaning of the phrase

“hearts and flowers.” Valentine’s Day is coming! What will I get from my boyfriend … my husband … my best friend? I’m hoping for some sort of bouquet, a card full of loving words and red hearts, candy or at least a sweet balloon.

Human beings may disappoint. That special someone may forget to check the calendar for February 14. But even if he doesn’t come through exactly as I hope, I can still be amazed and happy with the valentine I am sure to receive every day from my heavenly Father and his Son: words of delight and joy and caring — always surrounding me with love and more love. These are the best “hearts and flowers” I could ever have, and which I do have, on Valentine’s Day and throughout eternity.
