Automated Data Monitoring as an Inexpensive, Business Process-Documenting, Service Incident-Prevention Strategy Presented by: Ian Powell, University of NM Location: Potters Data monitoring is a means by which to verify essential, business-critical information stored through Banner, or another ERP or CRM system that a higher education institution relies upon. The benefits of implementing an automated data monitoring framework range from the creation of living, technical documentation of current business processes, to preventative notification and alert of possible high-priority, data-driven service incidents before they happen. During this presentation, we will explore a working, Java/Eclipse/Jenkins-based proof-of-concept implementation of an automated data monitoring strategy in place at the University of New Mexico. We will touch upon the business value of such testing and best practices for testing. Engaging Learners with Interactive Inquiry Presented by: Kris Armijo, Moriarty-Edgewood School District Location: Fireplace What happens when every learner in your classroom grapples with a question and has an opportunity to respond in class discussions – without even raising their hands? Pear Deck puts inquiry-based learning and 100% student engagement front and center. Bringing the classroom “clicker” into the 21st century, Pear Deck goes beyond just multiple choice-style questions, offering full text responses, numbers, drawings, draggable pins on images, and more. Come learn how to leverage this tool to transform learning in effective and innovative ways! [Workshop attendees can participate in this hands-on, interactive presentation with any wireless mobile device – smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc. Pear Deck is fully integrated with G Suite for Education (formerly Google Apps for Education). NOTE: If attendees do not have a Google account of their own, they will be provided with a temporary account for use during the presentation.

Building a CI System with Open Source Presented by: Sunghee Lee, University of NM Location: Franciscan Web Applications are similar to one another in terms of structure and tooling. Jenkins, GitLab & PHP work perfectly together and Jenkins is a great open source tool for CI process. CI is the process of performing static code analyses and running tests for an application on a regular basis, often on a push to a repository. GitLab Runner will test codes with multiple docker containers which means code can be tested with different environments. It is also possible to allow Jenkins to listen to incoming webhooks for triggering updates and generate a nice visual report for looking at the results. Jenkins monitors repository for changes and as soon as anything happens it will pull down the changes and perform all specified tasks. DeployHub one of open source CI tool works with Jenkins. It allows developers to define the software deployment package and logic once, and then push it forward where it adapts to the next environment in the continuous delivery pipeline - even when environments are mixed. Automated software deployment driven by the continuous delivery pipeline is the ultimate goal of agile DevOps; and doing agentless deployment is the quickest way to get it done.

No more CDs/DVDs: Open source, electronic software distribution Presented by: Neil Sabol, University of NM and Libby Henry, University of NM Learn how the University of New Mexico (UNM) has leveraged an open source solution (dl: Download Ticket Service) to replace a CD/DVD based software distribution process with an online system. The decentralized nature of UNM’s IT environment makes traditional centralized software distribution (i.e. SCCM, etc.) challenging. Download Ticket Service allowed the institution to bridge this gap while delivering value in the form of:

Eliminated dependency on legacy CD/DVD duplicator

Convenience for software consumers – no more mail or walk-in based distribution

Faster delivery and fulfillment of software purchases

Ability to deliver software to any computer with UNM network connectivity (regardless of OS and directory integration)

Reduced production costs Administrative (process) and technical aspects of the electronic distribution process will be described, along with lessons learned.

Implementing & Scaling Classroom Technology Integration – One District’s Journey Presented by: Teresa Salazar, Moriarty-Edgewood School District and Kris Armijo, Moriarty-Edgewood School District The Moriarty-Edgewood School District has been on a multi-year journey to equip our learning spaces with current technologies and provide our students with rich opportunities to engage in the types of transformational learning experiences that will inspire them to be innovative communicators, collaborators, critical thinkers, and creators of the 21st Century. In April 2017, our district became New Mexico’s first Google for Education Reference District based on our strong use of G Suite for Education tools and adoption of Google Chromebooks as our 1:1 device solution. We are one of the “Googliest” districts in the US! Of course, our journey is far from over, but as we have worked on achieving our goals for effective classroom technology integration, we have grown and gained many valuable insights. We would like to share our experiences with others who might be embarking on their own journeys with education technology or that may be currently facing some of the challenges we have encountered along the way. Our poster presentation will highlight benchmarks of our journey as well as information about our 1:1 Classroom Cart-Based Chromebook Initiative and Professional Development Plan. Our Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services, Teresa Salazar, and our District Education Technology Specialist, Kris Armijo, will be available to share information and answer questions.

Virtual Reality in the Classroom Presented by: Robert Ogan, ByteSpeed Location: Turquoise The real world is not flat after all, so why constrain our classrooms to experience the digital world on a flat screen? The shift from 2D to 3D immersive learning is as natural as adding color to movies and television was in the 1950’s. In many ways, it is even more impactful. Virtual Reality is transforming education. What started out as something that was simply “cool” has become a way to engage learners like never before. Imagine the possibilities…you are teaching children about dinosaurs and suddenly with the help of a VR headset, there is a life-sized one in front of their eyes. Your kids can view the International Space Station while floating in space or learn about Africa by riding a canoe through a small village. The possibilities are endless and the impact on education is beyond our imagination. Join us as we show you how to bring your classroom to the cutting edge of 21st century learning.

Docker for Developers (and Friends) Presented by: Greg Gomez, University of NM and Sung-Hee Lee, University of NM Location: Fireplace Docker’s been getting a lot of buzz lately. This presentation will help you to understand what Docker is and what it does. We’ll show you the basic concepts and demonstrate some typical Docker use cases. If you’re a programmer, developer, or manager who’s interested in learning more about Docker, stop by for a quick, slightly technical introduction. Docker helps to automate developer tasks such as web server or database installation and configuration. It can eliminate problems related to version incompatibility issues between development, integration and production environments. It does this by creating complete environments that are easy to share and run on any computer, making migration easy and painless.

Jobs in STEM fields are expected to grow to more than 9 million by 2022. This is a generation of makers, not just consumers. Coding is the next “blue-collar” job boom. Next Gen Science Standards are on the horizon for NM Public Schools. Let’s be ahead of the curve in providing PreK-12 students with access to spaces where they can explore mathematics and science domains using technology and engineering design practices. Here is how STEAM Labs are developing in Rio Rancho Public Schools. Available resources will be shared for creating STEAM spaces and programs within classrooms, schools, and libraries.
