New Mills Primary School Sports Bulletin May 2019 We seem to have squeezed rather a lot into this very short spring term! Only 4 weeks and we have had a full schedule of external events. This term has also seen a large amount of success with the trophy shelf now a little more crowded than it has been in previous years. However, the best thing about this term has been the development of the children’s sense of sportsmanship and teamwork. These values are the key skill they will leave primary school with and will set them up for a lifetime in and sport. Year 5 and 6 Rounders We had high hopes for both our teams in the Year 5 and 6 Rounders competition held at New Mills Pavilion. This year’s year 5 were last year’s winners in the year 3 and 4 event and the team consisted of a number of talented children with great strike and field skills. Thank fully our teams didn’t disappoint. New Mills Blue topped the Blue league and New Mills Red won the red league. They then both won their semi-finals to play each other in the final which was ultimately won by the red team. Fantastic consistent bowling from Isobel and Theo and great leadership shown by Harrison and Noah as team captains. The behaviour and sportsmanship from all the children in this event was outstanding. Thanks also goes to Jo B for being a fantastic parent coach for the afternoon.

Sports Bulletin May 2019

We seem to have squeezed rather a lot into this very short spring term! Only 4 weeks and we have

had a full schedule of external events. This term has also seen a large amount of success with the

trophy shelf now a little more crowded than it has been in previous years. However, the best thing

about this term has been the development of the children’s sense of sportsmanship and teamwork.

These values are the key skill they will leave primary school with and will set them up for a lifetime in

and sport.

Year 5 and 6 Rounders We had high hopes for both our teams in the Year 5 and 6 Rounders competition held at New Mills Pavilion. Sports Captains Our Sports Captains Eli and Luca have had a fantastic year. They have worked on a range of projects and events including helping to run the Year 1 mini triathlon and Scooter Duathlon. They have worked with school council to improve playtimes and have run warm ups in PE lessons and lunch time clubs. The highlight for them was attending the High Peak Sports Awards and collecting our Gold Award on behalf of the school. I have immensely enjoyed working with two hard working, polite and enthusiastic young people – I hope to see them running our primary competitions with Mr Worsley in a few years’ time. Applications for our new Sports Captains closed on Monday and we have had a large number of applications. We have decided to elect four Sports Captains this year – two to be selected by Mrs Williams and Miss Whetstone and two to be selected by Eli and Luca as their last task in post. I am pleased to announce that our Sports Captains for this year will be: Tabby, Maddie, Arthur and Jack P – Well done.

Daily Mile…or should we call it Daily Skip? We continue to refresh the Daily Mile format for KS2 with a variety of initiatives. The latest one is skipping which is proving to be very popular. Children run 5 laps and can then come into the centre of the track to use a variety of long and short skipping ropes. We are teaching the children to ‘Long Rope’ skip, running in and out and jumping with more than one person on the rope at once. This is a great activity to encourage timing, coordination and teamwork – please encourage your child to practise skipping at home. If you really want to see skipping at its best then search for ‘Kings Firecrackers Jump Rope Team at US Naval Academy’ on Youtube– a great example of teamwork and athletic excellence.

Year 3 and 4 Rounders This year’s Rounders competition for year 3 and 4 was held in warm sunshine (previous years we have had snow for this competition in May!). We took two teams to the event which was played on the Red Gras and Grass Pitches at New Mills School Pavilion. The format of the event had been changed from previous years in that we played with simplified rules and a larger bat so that more children could have the chance to score points by hitting and running. Our year 3 team did some great batting and fielding but narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-final. Our Year 4 team worked brilliantly together and were able to make it to the final by beating Thornsett in the semis. They ultimately won in the final against a strong Hayfield Year 3 team. Well done to team captains Joseph O and Chloe.

Tri Golf The greens and fairways of Chapel Golf course were glowing in the spring sunshine on Wednesday when we took part in the High Peak Trigolf competition. This is our first time at this event which included a range of target based golf games with soft balls. The team soon worked out that the quicker they moved through the games, the more points they scored and the boys in particular worked hard as a team to score points and feed the ball back to the next person. This approach paid off as when the results were declared we were the top scoring team with 407 points – gold medals and another trophy for the shelf. Particular mention goes to Harrison for great skills, enthusiasm and leadership.

Cheerfest Our loudest event of the year is definitely Cheerfest! This event was a celebration of all things Cheerleading and was held at New Mills Art Theatre. Twenty Two schools from around the High Peak took part and all had worked hard on their routines – many working with external coaches. At New Mills Primary we enable the children to create a routine which they themselves have choreographed. We therefore took 19 year 4 and 5 girls and helped them to work on a routine for the event. They chose the music and worked together to create a unique routine which we practised in break and lunch times. The girls did a fantastic job and performed confidently on stage despite having to wait until the very last for their turn!

Boys Kwick Cricket Our friends at Hayfield School were last year’s Kwick Cricket County Champions so we were looking forward to seeing the standard of play in the Hayfield team in this year’s New Mills competition. Hayfield and New Mills joined St Mary’s, Newtown, St Georges and Hague Bar in the event which was held at New Mills Cricket Club. The format of Kwick cricket is ideal for a team game at primary level with every member of the team having a turn at bowling and batting. New Mills had a red and blue team at the event with our red team including Harry and Theo who both play cricket at High Peak level. There were some great matches throughout the day with strong performances from St Mary’s and St Georges. However Hayfield did not disappoint and gave us a great show of bowling, batting and fielding skills. Two teams would go forward to the High Peak round of the event and so there were two finals played to determine which schools qualified. Our blue team met Hayfields very strong red team in their final and despite a valiant effort, were well beaten. Our red team played St Georges in a close match with our boys winning by 20 runs. Thanks must go to the young leaders at New Mills School who umpired all the games in a fair and professional manner. Thanks also to our team captains Theo, Harry and Cameron who managed, coached and organised their teams as well as delivering great individual performances.

Lacrosse Festival We were lucky enough to be able to participate in a new event in this year’s calendar – the Lacrosse Festival. Six schools from around New Mills took part in the session which was led by a specialist coach from Loughborough University. Children learned the basics of Lacrosse play, tackling, stick work, attack and defence. The children then took part in some fun games at the end of the afternoon. It is always great to take the children along to an event which has an active club in the local area. This gives the children the opportunity to carry on with the sport after the school event. For more information about how you can get into Lacrosse please contact Mellor Lacrosse Club.

PE Kit IMPORTANT - Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school. This should include shorts, tracksuit bottoms, a t shirt and spare socks. It should also include a hoody or jumper and trainers. If children do not have the right PE kit, it can waste time in PE lessons and often means we are unable to take the children outside. We are finding that children are returning to school after the holidays with no PE kit and it is affecting their ability to take part in all activities.

Dave Cullen – High Peak Golf Club We always welcome coaches and specialists from external clubs to come into school to show staff and children a new sport or help to encourage children to take up a sport outside of school. Dave Cullen from High peak Golf Club spent the afternoon with our year 2, 3 and 4 children teaching them the basics of Golf and created some fun target games to help them learn. We are lucky enough to have a large number of golf clubs in and around New Mills – Most of the local clubs offer FREE junior membership. Please contact New Mills, Buxton, Mellor or Chapel Golf Clubs for more details.
