Anyone who wants to see how much “FUN and FRIENDSHIP” is enjoyed in our Newcomer’s Club just needs to look at our newsletter and on our website. Our monthly newsletter not only highlights our fun activities, both those that occur regularly and those special events that happen occasion

ally, but also highlights great member participation in our activities. Looking at the newsletter photos, you can see evidence of FUN and FRIENDSHIP! Special THANKS to our Newsletter Committee members who do a FABULOUS job of keeping us up-to-date, while month after month produce not only a newsy, but a beautifully artistic communication. Those newsletter artists include: Kim Lubesnick, Bonnie Koonsvitisky, Carol German and Jo-Ann Smith.

Our website is another wonderful way of communi-cating to members and drawing in new members. If you haven’t wandered all the way through the site, you may have missed the Photo Gallery section that has pictures of club activities dating back to 2014. We’ve been having FUN and making FRIENDS for a LONG time! Huge KUDOS to our Webmaster, Jo-Ann Smith and Assistant Webmaster, Melissa Lee, who keep our site current and highlights pictures of our club activities. How fortunate we are to have such talented folks who keep us so informed! Janine Greenhill

President’s Message:

Page 4: NEW OMERS OF SAN DIEGUITIO APRIL NEWS · 4/3/2020  · NEW OMERS OF SAN DIEGUITIO -APRIL NEWS MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of this club is to welcome new residents of the area and

Warmly Welcoming some of our Newest Members:

Joan Kapell Elaine Frassanito was instrumental in introducing Joan to our Club and the wide range of activities we offer. Originally Joan and Robert, her husband, were born and reared on the East coast and they lived on Long Island. Then they moved to Rancho Mirage before finally relocating to Carlsbad. Joan had a successful career as a speech pathologist, working with children and adults over the length of her career. Her inter-ests range from traveling, attending the theater and concerts, playing tennis, bridge, canasta, and reading.

Nori Nowbahari Nori joined our Newcomers Club about three years ago, but until now, she hasn’t been very active. Her full name is Zahra Nowbahari, and she was born in Shiraz, Iran. She came to the United States in her early 20’s and is bilingual in Farsi and English. Nori has been awarded three Bachelors and two Masters Degrees in nursing and leadership. After earning her R.N. she worked as an Operating Room nurse. She’s also a trained Nurse Educator, teaching nursing for 20 years at San Diego City College, Brightwood College and Maric/Kaplan College in San Diego & Vista. Nori retired last year, so she has the time to focus on painting,

drawing, and writing classes. During the week she plays in a friendly game of Mah Jongg, takes exercise classes and walks regularly. Nori is single now, with two children and one grandchild.

Women’s Fiction Book Club: Mon, April 20: 10:00 Social and 10:30 Discussion

Our April meeting will be hosted by Elise Morgan. Elise will also fa-cilitate the discussion of “House of Spirits” by Isabel Allende. This book gets an amazing 4.23 stars on Goodreads. “The House of Spirits is an enthralling saga that spans decades and lives, twining the per-sonal and the political into an epic novel of love, magic, and fate.” Elise’s address is 3348 Corte Panorama, Carlsbad. Her phone number is 650-863-1440. Please RSVP to Elise at [email protected] and copy Judy Gechman at [email protected]

Strong women with interesting lives, challenges and goals are what this genre captures. These are character driven stories that focus on a woman, her growth and strength in overcoming challenges. Our gatherings are interactive and fun, with typically 7-10 participants. Books for this club have now been selected for meetings through May 2020. Please contact Judy if you have questions, would like to host, add your name to the book club mailing list or suggest future books.

Chicks with Chains (Biking) Tue, April 21, 10:30 On Tuesday, April 21, Chicks with Chains will ride the Coronado Strand. We will meet at 10:30. This is a flat, paved bike path. We will follow the ride with lunch at Miguel’s Cocina. If you can join us, email [email protected]. Details will be emailed a few days before the ride.

We still have a ride happening Wednesday, March 25. We will ride around Mission Bay in San Diego. We will meet at 10:30. This almost totally flat trail is a paved bike/pedestrian path. We will follow the ride with a picnic lunch under a lovely tree along the bay. If you can join us, email [email protected]. Details will be emailed a few days before the ride.

Cinema Socializing This group meets generally every other month at 4:00 on the second Satur-day, with some exceptions. Everyone is welcome - singles and couples. Eve-ryone sees the movie on their own and then we get together to discuss it at someone’s home. The next meeting will be on Saturday, April 11 at 4:00 at the home of Judy Gechman, 460 Orpheus Ave., Encinitas. At the time of this newsletter, it is too early to pick the movie because we need to see which movies will be coming out, get a sense for which ones might be of interest to our mem-bers and which ones will still be playing close to April 11. There are space constraints so reservations will be limited to the first 20 people to RSVP. We encourage you to let us know if you would like to be added to our email list. That will give us an easy way to communicate movie selections and send any updates. If you are interested in finding out more, email Judy Gechman: [email protected] or call Judy at 713-202-8816.

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Carol’s House It's been a while but we expect to be called out soon to furnish apartments at Carol’s House for women and children escaping domestic violence. We provide all kitchen essentials and linens to make each apartment a home. Thank you for the donations of silverware, dishes and linens. Patti and I are well supplied and unable to accept and store any more right now. If you are on our call our team you will receive an email to let you know which dates we need help. [email protected] (925) 200-0024 [email protected] (831) 295-3514

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Children’s Book Depositories We are still collecting new or gently-used books for younger children (board books included) and Level 1 and 2 readers. Currently, we have a sufficient quantity of books for third graders and up. [email protected] [email protected]

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Community Resource Center Nutrition Pantry Our Newcomers Club has provided long-term support for the all-volunteer staffing at the CRC Nutrition Pantry in En-cinitas every Thursday from 9:30-12:30. CRC depends on our group. We have a hardy group of loyal volunteers but would welcome additional volunteers to be sure that we have two people each week because many of our volunteers have very busy schedules which often includes out of town travel. This is an excellent hands-on opportunity to support the nutrition needs of members of our community who cannot afford to purchase food. There is a constant need for volunteers for this important service as food is donated each day from area grocers and must be culled, sorted and stocked. If you are interested in joining this team please contact Penny. Schedules are arranged on a monthly basis. You only need to volunteer about once every 6 weeks. [email protected] (513)314-4191

COMMUNITY SERVICE: San Diego Rescue Mission A big thank you to all who donated hygiene products for the women’s shelter and the homeless outreach. Debbie Kra-kauer, Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, was very grateful for our efforts (and especially excited about the tooth-brushes and toothpaste)! Please continue collecting items, and we can do this again at a later time. Betsy Buckner [email protected]

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Solutions For Change

At the February 5th General Meeting, Club members unanimously agreed to extend our helping furnish transitional apartments for victims of domestic violence at CRC’s Carol’s House to the residents of Solutions For Change (SFC). SFC solves family homelessness through an extensive two-to-three year program of coaching, education, and employment training. www.SolutionsForChange.org

At Carol’s House, we help furnish a vacated transitional apartment, and the recipient is welcome to take household items with her/him when leaving CRC’s protection. Most of the Carol’s House items are small and portable. SFC provides furnished transitional apartments for its residents, all of whom are required to work with a case manager. When a resident family is stabilized, employed, and ready to “graduate” into an apart-ment of their very own, the family submits a voucher for needed items to their case manager. If the item(s) are available, the requisition is approved. The Newcomers Club would be donating items to SFC for this do-nation pool. An inventory of Household Items is being developed by Mari Kennard (Carol’s House) and Judy Cours (Solutions For Change) so we can track and disperse smaller Items wisely and efficiently.

Current needs for SFC include: Household Items (Dishes, flatware, knife sets, pots & pans, toasters,

lamps, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners) and Furniture couch, Queen bed, Twin bed, dressers, lamp

tables, coffee tables). SFC willingly coordinates dates and is able to arrange pick-up for big furniture items – provided donors first send a photo of the item(s) to SFC Donations Coordinator so she can determine if the item is not too large for any given unit. Those who have questions or need clarification, please contact [email protected]. Community Service - Below is a new community service need as well as activities needing a volunteer to organizer. If you are interested in heading up one or more, please email Betsy Buckner at [email protected]. Betsy will send you more detailed information of what the activity en-tails and you can then decide if you are willing to run that activity. You will contact the organization to determine when to do the activity.

1. Volunteer with Jewish Family Services to distribute food at St Paul’s Cathedral. 2. Projects for Jewish Family Services like making Passover gifts for the elderly. 3. Assemble and donate gift boxes to Meals on Wheels. 4. Any other new opportunities for volunteers you might like to head up.

“ LIVING THE GOOD LIFE” HAPPY HOUR

HAPPY HOUR: Mon, April 6th at 4pm

My Darlings, Every now and then life grabs you by the bootstrings and shakes you up; this is what happened to me during my recent quarantine in Wuhan. It truly rendered a life changing impact on me.While there amidst the fear, despair, empty streets, soulful silence, and global efforts to halt the Coronavirus, I had a reawakening to my gift & purpose in life.It is with great pride and enthusiasm, I announce my decision to join Doctors Without Borders. It is here where I can apply my medical acumen, along with my medical degree, to make a real difference. Also, I am hoping to pick out more flattering scrubs, but I digress. I hope you will share in my new aspiration and life adventure, even knowing it will take me far from our Happy Hours and you, my beloved friends. This month is at Black Rail. While not on the HH menu, Slice of Life is the best drink ever! Remember to also save May 4th for our final HH at Susan’s. As Ever, Harriet Hobe: “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” Pablo Picasso Date: April 6th Time: 4pm Place: Black Rail - 6981 El Camino Real Carlsbad RSVP: [email protected] by April 5th.

You are invited to a party of Paramount proportions!

The Paramount Casino, the largest and most extravagant casino on the Las Vegas strip, is throwing a party to remem-ber. With the highest rollers and the gutsiest gamblers, the stakes are going to be high and there is no limit to what could happen. Everyone who is anyone in Vegas is sure to be in attendance for this grand event. From the powerful politician to the sexy show girl, the cunning cocktail waitress to Elvis himself– the guest list is as unlimited as the possi-bilities of how the night will end. Like everything else in Vegas, the party will be a gamble and there is no certainty to the events of the evening. Whose secrets will be exposed? Which lies will be uncovered? And who will fall victim to the lawlessness of the night?
