Dateline: Puerto Rico Commissioner's Summary: The 32nd CGH tourney was held for the first time off the N. American continent. A small field of six made the trip, the smallest since Colorado, to Puerto Rico and were not disappointed. Five of the six were former champions and between the golf, beach everyday, casino every night and the Tapas…all had an unforgettable trip.

The weather was typical for Puerto Rico. Hot and steamy but we were lucky and did not get rained on. The AM was conducted on the Westin River course. The Greg Norman design was soft from a lot of rain and the greens were slow. Davey Baxter served notice early by shooting a 38 on the front. His putter was red hot. Where was Jimmy? He was playing with Julio the accountant. The first official round was played at Coco Beach Lake/Mountain. A nice front followed by a nearly great back side allowed Roman to sprint out in front. His net 78, which featured a near ace on #6, was one stroke better than Blane who had a net 79 despite wallet issues. After big steaks and a hot crap table at Conquistador on Friday night it was back to Coco Beach on Saturday for round two. This is where the tournament swung. Blane blazes to a front side 41 hitting virtually every fairway and green. Just when it looked like he would put it in the freezer, disaster struck. A 10 on number 12 and another 10 on 18 along with two triples buried Blano for good. He went from a lock to a mock in just over an hour.Taking advantage of all this was Dave, Roman and Jeff who all were within two strokes of each other heading into the final day. Blane was still one stroke out, Jimmy 5 and Eric 9 after a second consecutive 89.Tension ruled on the first tee for Sunday's final round. Jimmy put on the rally cap to defend with a front side 48. Dave scraped it around with a 47 and those two looked to the finish. Jimmy closed out to end with a solid net 84 to finish at 258. Blane tried a back nine charge put Saturday's back nine "El Yunque" was too much. Even Eric tried to rally from way back with a final 85. But Dave did what he had to do despite an eruption of controversy (*see more with Scoop Bogey). His net 88 secured a 1 stroke win. It was Dave's first win in over thirteen tries!Mazel Tov Dave!!!

Capitol Hill Legislator 70.8/124 Commissioner's Summary:     It is hard to imagine that the group on the years Green Hat could play four of the best courses we have ever been on, had beautiful weather, great meals and accommodations and all of that be overshadowed. This is not a knock on the dominate victory by Jimmy but the pinnacle event maybe in CGH history occurred on Saturday night. The visit to Jordan Hare stadium at Auburn for the AU/UF football game was off the charts. 88000 orange clad crazies, terrific weather and a balls off game between the #2 and # 11 teams in the nation will not soon be forgotten. The tailgate, the band pre-game, the flight of the Eagle, southern Chuckie, War Eagle and It's great to be an Auburn tiger fan. A great memory for all of us!Let's get to the golf . The four courses on this Hat were one of the best collections we ever played. The Am kicked off at the impressive Ross Bridges. At 8191 yards, Ross Bridge is the 3rd longest course in the world. Granted we did not play it from the tips but a great test for all nine of this years players was at hand. Everybody enjoyed the play with no one distinguishing themselves.   The first round was played on a chilly morning on the hilly Oxmoor Valley Ridge course. Long and tough this was a great track. One of the early stories was the health of our leader. He showed the kind of guts and fortitude that all would have expected playing with a severely sprained ankle. The day belonged to Jimmy. His first round net 79 was the best round by 11 strokes. He played solid and steady and set up his entire weekend. Davey Baxter, making his first tourney in three years shot a net 88. Eric tied low gross with Dave and Jimmy at 92.The second round went from moving day to catch Jimmy day. The Judge course at Capitol hill is a great golf course pure and simple. The opening hole is one of Americas best. Jimmy was paired with the chairman and Tommy and his nerves showed early in the cold conditions. He started triple-quad and he looked on the ropes. The difference was that this year he steadied himself and ended with a solid net 88. In hindsight, that was the championship right there. Despite his start his was low net of the day. Jeff May

had his second straight net 91 and did nothing to help his repeat cause. Dave still held second and they both joined Jimmy in the final group on Sunday. Note, Craig did not do well…phew!    The final round was played on Sunday morning after the big game on Saturday night. It was really a coronation for Jimmy. He did not play well but his cushion was insurmountable. He did finish in style, par par, to wrap up the title. Dave finished second 9 strokes behind and tied Eric for low gross. Blane shot a net 86 to steal third. Tom also played well to round out the top four. Craig…phew!Jimmy wins his first title. Despite the fact he probably doesn't realize it, we all congratulate him!     Results Statistics Awards Section

Jeff MayTo All CGHers:The 2005 CGH proved once again that we can take a great venue with great golf courses and turn it into an ugly weekend.  This year's field of 11 had a great mix of former champ, long lost returnees and even a rookie. The Williamsburg area lived up to the test of a terrific choice. The golf was some of the best and toughest (note the course ratings and slopes below) ever played on any Hat.The weekend started on Thursday with the traditional 'AM' round at the River course at Kingmill. The River course is a sweet Pete Dye designed course that has hosted numerous men's and women's pro tourneys. The players were separated into two teams led by Captain Ferranti and Captain Yameen and dinner was at stake. The weather was great and the golf was excellent as the players limbered up for the main event. Some decent numbers were shot as Eric, Jeff M, Roman and a blast from the past Joe D broke 90.This was Joe's first CGH since Atlantic City in spring 1992.The first round of the 2005 Hat was played on a diabolical modern layout at Stonehouse. The course became the real story as it evoked raves and rants from the players. After Roman led off with first tee honors, from the melee Jimmy broke out and shot a sterling net 83 to seize the lead. His round featured a birdie 2 on the third hole. That score was 6 shots clear of his personal arch rival Tom at 89 who had a nice 44 on the front. The rest of the group was clumped in the low nineties with Roman and Craig at 92 and tied for third.Round two took place at Stonehouses sister course, Royal New Kent. A course on the verge of great, RNK is a modern links layout that tests any game. Jimmy turned into a one day wonder with a horrendous net 109. With his fading, everyone else seemed to hop back into the picture. Brian surged into a first place tie with a net 89. Larry joined the group with a net 91 and Craig made three with his net 92. This trio of leaders (184) was two clear of Jeff M who would round out the final group on Sunday. Also in the mix was Tom at 190 and Roman at 192. Jeff G imploded to last place while his "date " for the weekend Todd showed rookie nerves and finished two rounds in 10th place. The stage was set for a

fabulous Sunday finish.Played at one of the countries finest traditional layouts, the Golden Horseshoe was the perfect stage for the drama of the day. Noise was made early by a CGH legend as Eric, playing in the first group, made the turn in 43 and when he birdied the famous par 3 16th, the roars of the gallery echoed through the stately Virginia pines in Augusta like fashion. While Eric was making a Sunday charge, the tension in the final group was being felt. Larry opened hot with 4 pars in his first five but faded. Craig never got out of the gate. That left Brian and Jeff M standing to the finish. * for a detailed insider recap of the leaders final round see below*.Despite Eric's big charge he finished double/ single to end up at 85, tied with Craig for third four strokes behind. That left Brian and Jeff M on the 18th tee tied. The summary is a snowman by Wood a double by May and for the first time in exactly twenty years Jeff May wears the Green Hat.Jeff's win creates the largest gap between Hat wins: 20 years. The last time was in 1985 at Cape Cod CC in Mass.Mazel Tov Jeff M !!!Notes:

A scoring inquiry was made and a review completed. Jeff was listed on the official score sheet as a 9 HCP before the tournament began. An audit of scores show he actually won by three strokes not two as an error in round one was made.

Please check out Scoop Bogey's insider report (coming soon) and an up close and personal account of the final group/final round shootout.

Look for a couple of rule updates coming soon regarding ties, out of bounds and scoring caps. Also look out for an update on where the Hat goes next. It will be posted soon.

Thanks for coming, attendance is what makes this work.Eric CGH Chairman

Toronto, Canada2004 CGH Champion

Roman LeniwTo All CGHers:This years CGH had a slightly smaller field of 10 participants all vying for the most "coveted" prize in golf. Sixty percent of the group were former champs which clearly added validity to the notion that experience would rule in Canada. Speaking of Canada, the CGH's first international foray was a master stroke. Toronto could be one of the best cities in the world. Great food, nightlife, FABULOUS hotels and the "talent" was amazing. It was uniformly agreed that we also played some of the best golf ever on this years Hat. So the stage was set for a classic outing and here's what went down. The 'Am" was played at famed Gen Abbey, home of the Canadian Open. Because the Open was two weeks away the practice round was dominated by PGA tour rough, which had to be 4" or more. This is the kind of spinach those guys play every week and boy was it tough! The feature hole is the amazing 11th. A par 4 with a vertical drop of about 100 feet. How 'bout ,play.Tom had the traditional first tee honor as defending champ at a fabulous track named Copper Creek. Hilly, tight and beautiful, this course played hard from the blue tees. Lucky for all our pride he didn't hook it into the pond on #1. Again, scoring was solid as 4 players bettered 91. Jeff G, coming off last years final round implosion and pending nuptials, led with an 87. While CGH veteran commish Eric shot a gross 89.Brian and Roman put themselves in good position for round 2 with matching 91's. The group also had to deal with an hour and a half rain delay. Weather affected almost every round and definitely played a major role in the outcome.Round two was dominated by Blane. He started by being late for the bus, and as Scoop Bogey will discuss in his column, was in a matter of speaking, "shitty" on the course as well. As is typical of Blane, when things are "running" against him he can rise to the occasion. His net 82 reminded many of his incredible final round in AZ. Not to be outdone, Roman leaped to the

lead with a terrific net 84, while Eric tied Blane for second with a two round total of 180, 5 behind Duffy. Other scores were Craig with a net 92, and Brian's net 95, which proved he is not ready for primetime matchups with the big boys. Tom continued his "valiant " defense with a net 103 placing him next to last (2003 fluke anyone?).The final was set with three former champs in the hunt and playing together in the final pairing on the great Angus Glen golf course.. Eric started off fast, nearly acing the par three 2nd. He added another 2 on # 6 and was in full charge. Blane also was moving. A birdie and three pars of his own narrowed the gap on Roman who couldn't find the fairway and was starting to follow the familiar pattern of a Sunday leader fold. Just when it looked like it was going to be the ultimate Eric v. Blane showdown on the back, God intervened and proved he is Ukrainian. The rain washed away the final nine and left a bitter Eric and Blane. The" kissing your sister" result gave Roman his second Hat, first since his '96 win in Kiawah and the title of 2004 CGH champ.Congrats Roman (%$@!&*)Thanks to all for coming.See you next year!!!

Jacksonville, Florida2003 CGH Champion

Tom Ferranti

To All CGHers:Wow!! What a CGH weekend! Great weather, great golf courses and of course, great finish. This years festivities began with a casual round at Magnolia Point CC. A very nice track with very slow greens. Most of the Wednesday participants polished their games in preparation for the big weekend. The "official " CGH weekend began with the "AM" on Thursday at Hidden Hills. A surprisingly good golf course with stunning elevation for Florida the assembled field of 11 enjoyed this unique track. Nobody shot a great "AM" round and therefore no favorite emerged. The 2003 CGH opened on the King and Bear golf course at the World Golf Hall of Fame, an absolutely fabulous course. The 7:30a tee time for defending champ Nick P's first shot not only kicked off the Hat but also the play at the course. From the get go a couple of themes emerged. The first was the veteran Roman Leniw. He used his 10 hcp strokes and shot a net 80 for the

Page 10: New Page 1 [] · Web viewFinal Standings:Brian Wood 252Jay Baxter 253Kevin Slaboda 256Roman Leniw 257Alan Guenzel 257Jeff May 258Tom Ferranti 259Don Pogany 260Jay Dewan 262Nick Pologeorgis

first round lead. He played solid and strategically sound golf. Another theme was Jeff Groudan who stunned the field with his first round net 84. Also shooting well was Tom F, net 85 and the ageless legend Eric, net 87. Showing signs of being away from CGH pressure for over a decade, Tony, the low capper, shot a last place net of 103. Maybe the after golf tour of the Hall of Fame would spur on some of the others. The second round was at St. Johns, a well manicured "florida" style course under beautiful sunny skies. Jeff G continued his run by lighting up the course with a net 78 (the low net for the week). This great score was highlighted by back to back birds at 5and 6 and gave him a 6 stroke lead after round two. Tom, Roman and Eric despite fine rounds struggled to stay in touch. Jimmy Y played a fabulous round, net 86, despite penalties on the first hole because of lost clubs. Jeff May continued to disappoint. So did Tony and the Nicks squared. The final group for Sunday was set with Jeff G, Tom, Roman and Eric. Not only could you cut the Sunday morning tension with a knife but also the challenge of one of Americas top courses awaited. The TPC Stadium course would play host to yet another major golf moment, the final round of the CGH. The man to beat was Jeff G. His 6 strokes and a high cap looked almost insurmountable. Or was it. The pressure of being the Sunday leader at the Hat has ruined many before and would again this day. By the turn Jeff had completely imploded. 60 whacks for 9 and by hole 11 the lead had evaporated. Slow starts by Tom and Eric appeared to leave this to Jeff G and Roman. The vet and the new comer. Back and forth they went over the TPC back nine. After 14 holes. Jeff G had a three shot lead over Roman, an 8 stroke lead over Tom. By the 18th tee all three were tied!!! Matching 8's by both Roman and Jeff G at the famed 17th opened the door for the surging Tom. The problem for Jeff G and Roman was no one on the course knew that Tommy had made it all the way back. This might have been the key for Tom. A bogey for Tom a double for Jeff G and a triple for Roman made the result the most exciting in CGH history.Tom had a one stroke victory and his first Green Hat!!!!Congratulations to Tommy!!

As the intrepid undercover voice for the CGH, I was once again able to observe the intense competition of this years CGH. Fierce concentration, laser like focus and attention to detail marked this event. Unfortunately, none of this occurred on the course but at the GOLD CLUB!!! There is no doubt that the enjoyment felt at this establishment was the groups

response to being forced to watch two different bodies twisting all weekend. Man, can somebody, anybody get David and Blaine a salad?? If only Blaine had defended his CGH title as vigorously as he did his Jambalaya, maybe Nick wouldn't have held on and won the Hat.Speaking of Nick. As impressive as he was on the courses, what a pussy he was off them. Let me get this straight, he has swallowed half the cocktails on Manhattanen, goes to the best party town in America and decides he won't drink. Will he not gamble if we go back to Vegas? Will he not swim if we go to Bermuda? Will he not get laid if we...okay... go anywhere? Man, how lame was that? (pretty good bit huh?). Don't get me wrong, his abstinence was good for him and obviously his game but hanging with Nick without a few cocktails is kinda like hanging out with Gregg!!! Before we move on from the tourney, let's talk about Kevin. A great comeback, 15 strokes, 13 of which were on the back side. Here we go, 18th tee, tied and what....for an exclusive eyewitness summary, check out Jeff May's comments.Where's Brian going???Happy Birthday to Jeff May. He's looking good for forty??? A little inside info.. he did get some tongue from that old women (Linda) at the Rib Room. Speaking of that women, Blaine was eyeing up her daughter pretty hard. Hey, she was passed out on the table, maybe he had a shot!?? Not!! Roman needs a laundry tip. How do you get makeup stains out?? Did anybody tell Jimmy we left?? Jeff G is from Houston...you can't get funnier than that. Here's hoping everybody had as good a weekend as I did.

The 2000 Coveted Green Hat tourney is now history. It was a great weekend marked by HOT weather, lots of laughs and one of the best performances in CGH history on the links. The weekend became a test of endurance for all the participants with only those in peak mental and physical condition able to survive.Of course the heat was the over riding aspect of the weekend. The temp was an average of 109

degrees for the five days some of us spent in the desert. The high was Fridays 112. We had three single day records (Wed, Thurs and Fri) where the thermometer did not get below 110 degrees. Besides the obvious punishment the heat dished out, it also led to the theme of this weekend. " This heat....It ain't good for fat people!" And so the stage was set.Eight former Green hat champions led a strong field of 17 veterans and two rookies into this years event. The two time defending champion Brian Wood was looking to do what no one else ever had. Namely "Three peat in the Heat"!Other than the heat, the weather was perfect as the Hatters tuned up at Eagle Mtn. GC for the "AM" on Thursday. The course was a severe desert track and the heat was HOT! There were some early statements made on Thursday however. Drew shot the best net with a nifty 74 while the Legend himself, after a lengthy absence posted a net 78. Also shooting good rounds were Jeff, Scott, Paul and Alan. Blane kicked off his outing with a net 84. Eric had low gross of 85.The first tourney round was held at a surprisingly difficult Tonto Verde course in record heat. This was where the form for the entire weekend was set as Blane, Drew, Kevin and Scott shot to the top of a leaderboard they would inhabit all weekend. Blane's 82, Drew's 85 and Kevin and Scott's 89 were the only rounds under 90 on a layout that played long and tough. In good shape after round 1 were the rookie Craig Z and Jeff M. The defending champion struggled in the hot weather to a 93 finish.Round 2 was played at a tremendous desert course in Troon North's Pinnacle. One of the top desert courses in America. This was sure to be a true test on "moving day". The surprise was nobody really moved.(Except for Matt B but that is something for a different column) The leaders held form and nobody from behind rallied or, for that matter, faded. Blane shot a fine net 75 and Kevin a great net 78 but nobody else did anything of note. All this did was set up a final day shootout amongst the 4 leaders. The final round was contested "early" on Sunday morning at Sunridge Canyon. The tension was high at the driving range as the realization that one of golf's great trophies was on the line this very day.To quote Warner Wolf," The driving range was where you could have turned your sets off". Putting together one of the finest rounds in CGH history Blane closed the deal on the front side. Consider that Blane had major shoulder surgery during the summer and had played only 3 rounds all year in prep for the hat. Also consider the five days of heat he endured and of course the Saturday night tradition and his front side 36 could be the best 9 holes in CGH history. "I have never shot 36 for nine before" Blane said during the post tourney press conference" and it has probably been 5 years since I broke 80".Blanes gross 79 and net 69 blasted him on to a 21 stroke victory over a shocked Kevin S who finished second and said," I played great this weekend". Drew and Scott also played great on Sunday but to no avail. Other good rounds were Nick's net 75 (can anyone remember 9 years ago) and Alan's net 79. Brian's chance of a three peat shriveled and died as he tied for sixth, 41 shots off the pace.Once again the CGH tradition of top level golf courses and play was confirmed. I thank all of you for coming and making this my favorite weekend of the year. I also congratulate the ultimate CGH bridesmaid for his tremendous victory.

Tournament SummaryThe 25th Green Hat brought together one of the best fields in CGH history. The group consisted of 8 former champions with 12 Hats to their credit. With all this talent on hand this historic event would live up to the hype of being the last outing of the millenium. The weekend begin pleasantly enough on a beautiful day at New Seabury. All the Hatters had fun as every honed their games to sharp points.Friday at Balleymeade the fun ended and the war began. Brian Wood, as defending champ, hit the first tee ball and the Silver renewal Hat was underway. A couple of great rounds were turned in early on Friday. Former Champ Jeff May reclaimed the form of years ago and shot a brilliant

net 78 . Using the magic of his 7 wood, he held a two stroke lead over rookie Jay Dewan, who showed no sign of green nerves.Other solid first round numbers were Kevin, Roman and Alan. Defender Wood shot net 85 and Jay Baxter also shot net 85 to keep in touch with the leaders. The second round proved to be critical for those held dreams of glory. Under dark skies at Ocean Edge a loud noise of a bugle charge was heard by CGH veteran Blaine Tierney who was 4 over through 13. Alas he faded to a solid net 83 and was never seen again. The best round of the second day was turned in by Tom Ferranti. His net 80 set him up for the final group on Sunday. He would be joined by Jeff May, who continued to lead by 3 after two rounds, by Jay Baxter on the strength of his net 80 and by Kevin with a net 85. Also in prime position was the defending champ who sat only 7 strokes back. Other good rounds at OE were from Drew, Nick and Alan. The tension on Sunday morning was increase by brutal weather conditions at the very tough Waverly Oaks GC. Wind whipped drizzle and cold temps met the Green Hatters on this all important day. Early on the conditions dictated that no move would be made from the pack and that the winner would come from the leaders. Tom Ferranti stormed to the front of the leader board with a front side 51. Forced to keep pace Jay shot a 45 through 9 and it appeared that the trophy would go to one of those two. But as leader Jeff May folded and Tom imploded, Brian and Kevin Slaboda charged. Jay shot a terrific backside 43 to close but failure to par #16 a long par five cost him dearly. Kevin's bid for the Hat came apart at 18 with a triple bogey 7 for a back nine 49 and 18 hole score of 104. This left room for Brian! His backside 49 with the key 6 at #16 squeaked him by first Kevin and the Jay for the victory.Brian's victory was his second come from behind, one stroke title in the last two years and he is the first successful defender since Tom Lavelle at Hilton Head and Colorado.
