New Portalink for San MiguelAuthors: Vincent Van der Wijk

San Miguel, a major customer of Bühler, located in the Philippines has ordered a secondmechanical unloader for its plant Golden Bay Grain Terminal at Mabini (Batangas Bay). Thefirst mechanical unloader type Portalino for unloading of Handymax ships is in operationsince 1994 in Mariveles (Manila Bay) with the specific purpose to unload malt for San Mi-guel’s brewery.

San Miguel has invested now in a new mechanical unloader type Portalink. The Portalink is acombi installation, capable of unloading and loading at the same time. The Portalink is in-stalled on a finger pier allowing Panamax vessels being unloaded on one side and on theother side barges can be loaded.

The low energy costs, reduced wear requirements, and easy operating use increasing oper-ating efficiency have convinced San Miguel to contact Bühler for the new investment in anunloader for the new pier, the Portalink is having a higher unloading capacity. With Bühlerhaving several installed Portalink’s with third party suppliers such as Nation Granary (WorldGranary) and Mariveles Grain Corporation, all performing to full satisfaction, San Miguel hasbeen confident in purchasing the Portalink for their critical operations.

San Miguel has invested in theirown grain terminal to reduce theglobal costs eliminating thirdparty suppliers and increasingcontrol through vertical integra-tion in the supply chain, and en-sure sufficient supply of lowcosts grains. The Portalink is capable of un-loading 600 t/h of wheat, beingdistributed with full capacity over2 conveyer belts each having a600 t/h capacity into the silocomplex. In addition a loadingboom with spout of 250 t/h forbarges up to 1.500 DWT hasbeen installed which can be di-rectly fed by the Portalink, orwith a third conveyer belt fromthe silo. With this setup of un-loader and loader San Miguelhas found a well-balanced sys-tem fulfilling the transhipmentrequirement with one installa-tion. The high unloading capacity of the Portalink, advantages connected to the mechanicalunloader such as low energy consumption, decreased wear, and easy operating use in-crease in significance.

With the Portalink being installedon a finger pier, Bühler has con-sidered various assembly op-tions ranging from classical on-site installation up to fully offsiteassembly. Each assembly optionhaving specific benefits. In closeconsultation with the projectteam of San Miguel, the optimalassembly setup has been se-lected in which the Portalink isdivided into 5 large sectionswhich have been preassembledby the steel manufacturer. Theindividual sections have beenshipped and lifted by a heavy

load vessel into place, reducing assembly time for the main structure to a mere 3 days.

The Portalink has only been a part of large investment including a 500 t/ day flour mill, and a60 t/hour feed mill (Equipped by Bühler). In addition, 6 more feed mills are being planned tobe constructed in the near future.
