InaccordwiththedemandsoftheUnitedStatesConferenceofCatholicBishops,PowersCatholicwillpresentcurriculumcontentfromPraesidium’sCalledtoProtectprogram.ThisprogramisprovidedtousbytheDioceseofLansingandisapartoftheChurch’songoingefforttohelpcreateandmaintainasafeenvironmentforchildrenandtoprotectallchildrenfromsexualabuse.Informationabouttheprogrammaybefoundatwww.praesidiuminc.comAsaparentyouhavetherighttochoosetohaveyourstudentnotparticipateinanylessonofthisnature.Ifthatisyourwish,pleaseemailorsendawrittennotetotheactingprincipal,SallyBartos,([email protected])thatyourchildisnottoparticipate.

Allincomingfreshmenandtransferstudentsmusthaveonedoseofmeningococcalvaccineandonedoseoftetanus/diphtheria/accellularpertussis(Tdap)vaccine(if5yearshavepassedsincetheirlastdoseofDTaP,TdorDT).AllvaccinationsaretobeuptodatenolaterthanOctober1,2020.

III. ADMISSIONSPOLICYANDPROCEDURESPowersCatholicHighSchooladmitsstudentswithoutregardtosex,race,color,ornational/ethnicorigin.Itistherightoftheschooltonotacceptstudentsforacademicordisciplinaryreasonsandtheschoolhastherighttoreviewallrelevantdocumentationfromthestudent’spreviousschool(s).WhilePowersdoesnotexcludestudentsonthebasisofreligion,itshouldbeunderstoodbythestudentandparentthatweplaceasupremevalueonthereligiousformationofourstudentsintheRomanCatholictradition.Allstudentsareexpectedtoparticipaterespectfullyinallofourformationactivities.StudentswhoregularlyabsentthemselvesfromrequiredactivitieswillbereviewedwithrespecttocontinuedenrollmentatPowersCatholic.
A. REGISTRATIONAstudentwillbeconsideredasregisteredoncetheyhavecompletedtheregistrationformandsuppliedthenecessarydocuments;transcript,behaviorreport,placementtestscore,signedreleaseofrecordsfrompreviousschoolandimmunizationrecord.
B. WITHDRAWALANDTRANSFERAnystudentwithdrawingortransferringfromPowersCatholicshouldmeetfirstwitheitheraguidancecounselororanadministrator.Thismeetingwillallowschoolpersonneltoofferadviceonthewisdomand/orthetimingofaplannedmoveandtoadvisethestudentofthecorrectprocedurestofollowinordertowithdraw.Allschoolpropertymustbereturnedandfees/tuitionmustbepaidbeforecreditsaretransferredandtranscriptssent.
IV. TUITION-BOOKSA. TUITION
OurtuitionratesaresetannuallybytheFinanceCommitteeandBoardofEducation.WebillfamiliesintwelveinstallmentsbeginninginJune.Itisimportantthatyoucommunicatewithusifanextenuatingcircumstancenecessitatesalatepayment.Pleasecallusat591-0100andaskforRichTrogan.Failuretopaytuitionontimemayresultinthestudent(s)sittingoutofextracurricularsandclassuntilsuchtimeasproperarrangementshavebeenmade.RefertoAppendixCformoredetails.
B. BOOKSInmostclassesstudentsarerequiredtopurchasetheirownbooks.Thesebooks,electronicorpaper,newand/orused,maybepurchasedfromalocationoftheparentschoosing.Booksmaycontinuetobepurchasedduringthefirstweekofclasses.
C. TUITIONASSISTANCEStudentsareeligibletoapplyfortuitionassistanceoncetheyhavesubmittedanapplicationforadmission.AllgrantsareawardedbytheSchoolScholarshipCommittee.AllapplicantsmustfileacompletePSASapplicationavailableonlineathttp://www.powerscatholic.org/tuition--financial-aid.html.Grantsawardedaredeterminedbytheneedoftheapplicantsandtheamountoffundsthatareavailable.

V. ATTENDANCEPOLICIESANDPROCEDURES
Tomeetthedemandsofachallengingacademicscheduleandtoreceivethegreatestpossiblebenefitofthetotaleducationalprogram,regularattendanceisessential.Itisimportantforthestudenttobeinclassontimeeachandeveryday.Itisalsoimportantthatparentsrealizethatstudentsneedtobeherefortheentireschoolday.Latearrivalsandearlydismissalscanbeadetrimenttothestudent’seducationalgrowth.Studentsunabletomeetthisidealaregovernedbythefollowing:
A. ABSENCESStudentsareexcusedbytheschoolforpersonalillness,illnessordeathinthefamilyorasapprovedbytheadministration.(MichiganSchoollaw)Intheeventthatastudentmustbeabsentfromschoolthefollowingstepsshouldbetaken:1. Parentsareaskedtocallnolaterthan9:00a.m.toreportanabsence,latearrival,orearly
dismissal.2. Absencesthatarenotphonedinwillbeconsideredunexcused.3. Studentswithexcusedabsencesareresponsibleformakingarrangementswiththeirteachers
tomakesurethatallworkismadeup.Areasonableamountoftimeisgrantedforthemake-upwork.
B. UNEXCUSEDABSENCE/SKIPPINGStudentshavingabsencesforoneormorehoursofschoolthataredeterminedtobeunexcusedbytheadministrationwillhavethefollowingpenaltiesimposed:1. Afirstincidentofskippingschoolwillresultinonedetentionforeachclass,studyhall,
homeroom,orassemblymissed.Parentswillbenotifiedoftheskippedclass(es).Ifastudentskips3ormorehours,theywillreceiveanin-schoolsuspension.
2. Asecondincidentofskippingwillresultinatleastaone-daysuspensionfromschool.3. Anysubsequentincidentmayresultinlong-termsuspensionordismissalfromschool.
PowersCatholicisaclosedcampus.Anystudentleavingcampuswithoutpermissionwillbesubjecttothepenaltieslistedaboveaswellasadditionaldisciplinarymeasuresatthediscretionoftheschooladministration.
C. EXCESSIVEABSENCES
Whenastudentexceedsten(10)daysofabsenceinasemesterwithoutpropermedicaldocumentation,astudentwillbesubjecttoadministrativereviewandpossibledismissal.Thisreviewmayleadtoconditionalenrollment,includingparametersforattendance.
D. TARDINESSTOSCHOOLStudentsarrivinglatetoschool(anytimeafterthescheduledstarttime)mustreportinattheattendanceofficebeforegoingtoclass.Parentsshouldcallthesickline(591-7425)toreportalltardies.Anytardythatoccursduetoalegalormedicalappointmentwillnotbecountedtowardastudent’saccumulationoftardiesprovidedthatanotefromtheappropriateprofessionalofficeisgiventotheattendanceofficeuponthestudent’sreturntoschool.Allotherincidentsoftardinesstoschoolarecumulativethroughthesemesterandfallunderthe

following:Thefirstthreewillbeallowedwithoutconsequence.Thefourththroughsixthincidentswillresultinadetention,REGARDLESSOFTHEREASONFORTHETARDINESS.Theseventhandeachsubsequenttardywillresultinthestudentbeingsuspendedfromclassesforoneday.Continuedtardinesswillbecauseforadministrativereview.
E. TARDINESSTOCLASSTardinesstoclasswillbehandledbytheteacher.Onthethird(andeachsubsequent)incidentoftardinessperquarterastudentissubjecttoonedetention.
F. EARLYLEAVE/ILLNESSDURINGTHEDAY
Ifastudentmustleaveschoolearly,hisorherparent/guardianmustphonetheschooltomaketherequest.UndernocircumstancesshouldastudentleaveschoolwithoutreportingtotheAttendanceOffice.UponreturntoschoolastudentistocheckbackinattheAttendanceoffice.StudentswhobecomeillduringthedayandneedtoexcusethemselvesfromclassmustreporttotheAttendanceOffice.Ifstudentsleaveforanappointment,theymustpresentanotefromthedoctorupontheirreturn.
G. AFTERSCHOOLPARTICIPATION
Astudentmustbeinschoolalldayinordertoparticipateinorattendextracurriculareventsatschoolthatday,regardlessiftheextracurriculareventisbeforeorafterschool.Exceptionsmaybegrantedbyanadministrator.Itisincumbentuponthestudenttoseekpermissionpriortoparticipation.Anystudentservingin-schoolsuspensionwillnotbeallowedtoparticipateinorattendanyextracurriculareventsatschoolthatday,regardlessiftheextracurriculareventisbeforeorafterschool.
VI. ACADEMICPOLICIES,PROCEDURES,ANDPROGRAMS
A. GRADUATIONREQUIREMENTS
AllstudentsinattendanceatPowersCatholicarerequiredtotakesixclasseseachsemester.Onecreditisgivenforeachsemesterclass.InordertograduatefromPowersastudentmusthave:1. Completedfouryearsofhighschool2. Takenandpassed46credits3. Completedalloftherequiredclasses4. BeeninattendanceatPowersCatholicduringthelastsemesterofhis/hersenioryear5. CompletedtheChristianservicerequirement

ThesearetheminimumrequirementsforgraduationfromPowersCatholic.Allstudentsarerecommendedtotakeacademicclassesbeyondtheseminimumrequirements.(Thereareseveralexceptionstotheserequirementsfortransferstudents,GeneseeCareerInstitutestudents,andDual-Enrolledstudents.)Tobeconsideredon-trackforgraduation,astudentmusthaveearnedaminimumof10creditsbytheendoffreshmenyear,22creditsbytheendofsophomoreyear,and34creditsbytheendofjunioryear.
Theprincipalmaymakeanexceptionforastudentnotpresentinschoolforthelastsemesterofsenioryearduetoillnessorotherexceptionalcircumstances.
Thestudentmustbewithintwocreditsoftherequirednumberforgraduationattheendoffouryearsofhighschoolandbeenrolledincompletionclassesinordertogothroughthegraduationceremony.ThedeficientcreditsmustbesuccessfullymadeupbyJanuaryoftheyearfollowingthegraduationinorderforthestudenttoreceiveaPowersCatholicdiploma.
Withproperdocumentation,PowersCatholicwillgranthighschoolcreditforahighschoollevelcoursetakenpriortohighschooladmission.
ChristianServiceRequirement
Everystudentwillberequiredtoperformfivehoursofserviceforeachsemesterinattendance.Thisserviceistobedoneoutsideofregularschoolhours.Itistobevoluntary,withoutpay,andwithnoclassroomgradeormarkgiven.Guidelinesforappropriateservicepergradelevelwillbedistributedtostudents.Seniorsareaskedtocompleteandturninallrequiredservicehoursbytheendofthefirstsemester.Seniorswillberequiredanadditional10hoursfortheirCapstone.
B. ATHLETES
StudentswhowouldparticipateinDivisionIorIICollegiateathleticsareboundbyNCAAorNAIAeligibilitypolicieswhichrequireveryspecificacademiccourseworkandlevelsofachievement.Studentathletesshoulddiscusstheserequirementswiththeirguidancecounselorearlyandthroughoutintheirhighschoolcareer.
C. TRANSFERSTUDENTREQUIREMENTS
If,priortoattendingPowersCatholic,astudentattendedahighschoolinwhichstudentsmaytakeonlyfiveclassespersemester,heorshemaygraduatewithareducednumberofcredithours.Foreachsemesterspentinsuchaschool,thentherequirednumberofcreditswillbereducedbyone.TransferstudentswhowerenotrequiredtotakePhysicalEducationintheirfreshmanyeararenotrequiredtomeetthephysicaleducationrequirementatPowersCatholic.Transferstudentswhowerenotrequiredtotakeworldhistoryorgeographyintheirfreshmanyearmaytakeanysocialstudieselectivestomeetthisrequirement.AyearofAmericanhistory,asemesterofgovernment,andthreeyearsofsocialstudiesarestillrequired.InfiguringthegradepointaverageforstudentswhotransfertoPowersCatholic,thehonorpointsforgradesfrompreviousschoolswillnotbeweighted.
StudentswishingtotransfertoPowersCatholicfromahomeschoolsettingmustsupplydocumentationandrecordsfromtheirparticipationinanapprovedhomeschoolprogram.
WhenaPowersCatholicstudentcompletesasemesteratanaccreditedinternationalschool,heorshewillbegivensixcredits,theequivalentofasemesteratanAmericanschool.Thegradesor

percentagesreceivedininternationalschoolswillnotbeusedindeterminingthestudent’scumulativegradepointaverage.ThestudentshouldpresentanofficialtranscriptordocumentwhichliststheclassesandgradesreceivedwhenheorshereturnstoorentersPowersCatholic.
D. CREDITRECOVERY
Creditrecoverycoursesmaybetakenforenrichmentortofulfillagraduationrequirement.However,classesthatarerequiredforgraduationfromPowersCatholicshouldnotbetakenincreditrecoverysettingunlessthestudenthasfailedthecourseatPowersCatholicorhasbeengrantedpermissionfromacounselororadministrator.APowersCatholiccounselororadministratormustapprovecreditrecoveryclassesbeforePowersCatholicwillgrantcredit.Creditrecoverygradesdonotaffectthestudent’sgradepointaverage.
E. EARLYCOLLEGEADMISSIONCREDITS
PowersCatholicwillgrantdualenrollmentcreditforcollegeclassesoron-lineclassesiftheclassesareofferedbyaccreditedinstitutionsandapprovedbythePowersCatholicadministrationbeforethestudentbeginstheclass.Thestudentwillberesponsibleforanycostincurredbytakingtheclass.
ThegradeearnedforaclassthatisnotofferedatPCHS,willnotbecomputedaspartofthestudent'shighschoolGPAunlessitisanapprovedDualEnrollmentprogram.ForapprovedDualEnrollmentclasses,gradeswillbecomputedonanA/Pass/Failbasis.
F. STUDYSKILLS
TakingaStudySkillsperiodcanbeaneducationaladvantagetosomestudents.Itwillaffordastudenttimetostudy,usethelibrary,meetwithatutor,makeupatest,seeacounselor,ortakecareofbusinesswithoutinterruptingclasstime.Ingeneral,itismoreimportantforastudenttodowellinsixclassesthantotakeseven.
G. REPEATEDCREDITS
Ifastudentrepeatsaclass(otherthanthosewhichmayberepeated:Forensics,3DArt,Band,Yearbook,SportsSkills,Choir,StudySkills),heorshemayonlyreceivecreditonce.Thegradesofbothattemptswillremainontherecordandthuswillbeaveragedinthecomputationofthecumulativegradepointaverage.Thissituationwillapplyalsoincaseswherethestudentfailedacourseandthenrepeatedit.
H. TEACHERASSISTANT,OFFICEEXPERIENCE,LIBRARYASSISTANT,PHYSICALEDUCATION
ASSISTANTJuniorsandseniorsmaysignupasanoffice,library,physicaleducationorteacherassistantasoneoftheirsixrequiredclasses,withtheteacher’spermissiononly.GradesofSorUaregivenintheseclasses.SeniorsmusthaveatleastfiveclasseswithlettergradesotherthanSorU.JuniorsmusthaveatleastsixclasseswithlettergradesotherthanSorU.
I. POWERSACADEMICSTUDENTSUPPORTPROGRAM
PowersAcademicStudentSupportProgramisanintegratedeffortonthepartofadministrators,counselors,teachers,andparentstohelpstudentswhohavelearningdifficulties.Workingasateam,thePowersCatholicstaff,withtheinputoftheparentandstudent,willattempttodevelopstrategiesandaccommodationstohelpthestudentbecomeasuccessfullearner.
PowersCatholicdoesnothaveaSpecialEducationProgram;PowersCatholicdoesnothavepersonnelwithSpecialEducationnorlearningdisabilitiestraining.PowersCatholicdoesnot

acceptnorfollowIndividualEducationalPlans(IEP’S).PowersCatholicdoeshavecaringadministrators,counselors,andteacherswhoarewillingtoworkwithspecialneedsstudentsinareasonable,butlimited,capacitytosupporttheindividual’seffortstomeetuniquelearningchallenges.
ThemainemphasisofthePowersAcademicStudentSupportProgramwillbeonpositiveself-imageandself-confidence.Atthebeginningoftheyear,schoolpersonnel,workingwiththeparentandthestudent,willdevelopalearningplanwithreasonableaccommodationsandachievablegoals.Theplanwillbereviewedyearlyandmodifiedwhennecessary.
Thestudent,workingcollaborativelywiththesupportoftheschoolandparents,willbeexpectedtoaccepttheresponsibilityforhisorheracademicachievement.MoreinformationaboutthisprogramisavailablefromthePowersguidancecounselors.
J. SCHEDULECHANGES
Wediscouragestudentsfromchangingtheirmindsaboutthecourseswhichtheyhavechosen.Theseschedulechangeswillbeallowedonlyifthefollowingconditionsaremet:
1. Thestudenthassufficientreason.2. Therationalemeetswiththeapprovalofthecounselorandtheadministration.3. Thereisanotherclasswithalowenrollmentavailabletothestudent.4. Thestudentpaysa$10.00fee.
Studentswillnotbeallowedtochangeordropclassesafterthethirdweekofthesemestereveniftheclassisaseventhclass.
K. SCHOLASTICGRADESANDREPORTS
GradePointValuesLetterdesignationsareusedtoevaluatethestudent’sprogressineachsubjectarea.Honorpointsforeachgradeare:

M. SEVENTHHOURPOLICY
AnystudentwithacumulativeGPAof4.0orbetterwhoelectstotakeanon-required,non-weightedseventhhourclass,andwhoearnsanAinthatclass,maychoosetotaketheclasswithouthavingtheclassaffecthisorherGPA.

V. COLLEGEAPPLICATIONPOLICY

AcademicintegrityisahighpriorityatPowersCatholicHighSchool.Itrequiresthatstudentsbetruthfulandrespectfulofothers’intellectualproperty.Intheirpursuitofknowledge,studentsmustunderstandwhatconstitutesacademicdishonestysothatitcanbeavoided.Integrityinallformsisdiscussedwithstudentsatseveralpointsinourcurriculum.Examplesofacademicdishonestyinclude,butarenotlimitedto:1. Cheating:Whenastudentmisrepresentstheirmasteryofmaterialonatestoronwritten

VIII. CODEOFCONDUCTFORSTUDENTS
PowersCatholicHighSchoolis,aboveallelse,aCatholicChristiancommunitywhichassemblessothatallmaygrowinmind,body,andspirit.Withthisinmind,eachmemberofourcommunitymusttakeseriouslytheirresponsibilitytowardtheothermembersofourcommunitybydisplayingrespectandChristianvaluesatalltimes.Individualswhofailintheirdutytobehaveinthismanneraresubjecttoconsequencesrangingfromadmonitiontoexpulsion.WiththeteachingsoftheCatholicChurchasitsguide,theadministrationreservestherighttoinvestigatefactsandtodeterminetheseriousnessofanyviolationofourCodeofConductforStudents.Further,theschooladministrationretainstherightandprivilegetoadministerconsequencesforactsnotspecificallystatedherein.
A. SeriousInfractionsofSchoolPolicy/Rulescanresultinanimmediatesuspensionandparentnotification.Offendersarealsosubjecttoexpulsion.Seriousinfractionsofschoolpolicyinclude,butarenotlimitedto,thefollowing:1. Physical,verbal,orsexualassaultorintimidatingbehavioronthepersonofanymemberor
guestofourschoolcommunity.Anyactionwhichcausesorhasthepotentialtocauseharmtoanother.Fightingand/orthethreatofphysicalharmtoanymemberorguestofourschoolcommunity.
2. SexualmisconductorSexualharassment.Thismayincludesexuallyorientatedactions,statements,orpictures.
3. Harassment.Thismayincludemakingstatements(verbalorwritteninanymedium)whichareinjurioustothedignityorreputationofanotherpersonwhetherthestatementsaretrueorfalse;intimidatingbehavior;assault.Anyactionwhichcausesorhasthepotentialtocauseharmtoanother.
4. Speedingand/orrecklessdrivingonorneartheschoolcampus.5. Theftofpropertyfromamemberoftheschoolcommunityortheschoolitselforbeingan
accomplicetothesame.Possessionofstolengoods.Theunauthorizedpossessionofschoolkeys.Offendersaresubjecttoimmediateexpulsion.
6. Criminalacts.Thecommissionof,orparticipationin,anyactdefinedascriminalbyfederal,state,orlocallaworordinanceisprohibited.Disciplinaryactionmaybetakenbytheschoolwhetherornotcriminalchargesresult.(Examplesofthisinclude:arson,bombthreats,extortion,gambling,andindecency.)
7. Possessionoruseofanyweapons,fireworks,orothermaterialsorchemicalswhichcouldcausebodilyinjuryorpropertydamage.Thisincludestheuseofchemicalsprays,irritants,orothermaterialsordeviceswhichcouldbedisruptivetotheschoolorharmfultoothers(e.g.mace,peppergas).Offendersaresubjecttoimmediateexpulsion.
8. Defacingschoolproperty,includingthelockers,andotheractsofvandalismonorneartheschoolcampus.
9. Alcohol:Possession,useorbeingundertheinfluenceofalcohol.Studentsinviolationwillbesubjecttoimmediatesuspensionand,afteradministrationconference,maybeexpelledor

requiredtoattendaninterventionprogram.Asecondoffensewillresultinimmediateexpulsion.
10. IllegalDrugs:Beingundertheinfluenceofillegaldrugsorbeinginpossessionoflookalikedrugsordrugparaphernaliaonorintheproximityoftheschooloratanyfunction.Studentsinviolationwillbesubjecttoimmediatesuspensionand,afteradministrationconference,maybeexpelled.Asecondoffensewillresultinimmediateexpulsion.
11. IllegalDrugs:Studentsfoundselling,buyingorbeinginpossessionofillegaldrugsonorintheproximityofthecampusoratanyschoolfunctionaresubjecttoimmediateexpulsionandtheproperlegalauthoritiesmaybenotified.
(a) Wereservetherighttouseanylegalmeans,including,butnotlimitedto,cellphonesearch,caninesearchesoflockers,backpacks,purses,andothersimilaritemstopreventtheillegalpossessionofdrugsonourcampus.
12. Theuseoftobaccoortobaccoby-productsinanyformonschoolpropertyoratschoolsponsoredfunctions.Thisincludesallformsofvaping.
13. Grossdisrespectand/orinsubordinationtoamemberoftheadministration,faculty,orstaffincludingfailuretoproperlyidentifyoneselfwhenrequestedtodoso.Anythreat,verbalorwritteninanymedium,towardamemberofthestaff.Refusaltocomplywithanyreasonablerequestordirective.
14. Anypublicstatement(inanymedium,includingelectronic,Internet,andsocialmediawebsites)madetowardoraboutanymemberofourcommunityoraboutourschoolwhichcanbeconsideredinjurioustothedignityorthereputationoftheperson(s)ortheschool.
15. Anymisconductrelatingtothemisuseofschoolcomputersorotherproperty.SeepolicyonComputer/InternetandRelatedTechnologies.
16. Thetakingofanyphotographofanotherwithoutpermission.Thereistobenouseofpicturetakingdeviceswhileinanyareathatpeoplewouldnormallyexpecttohaveprivacyincluding,butnotlimitedto,restroomsandlockerrooms.
17. Repeatedmisconductofanynatureortruancy.18. Anyconductwhichcausesdisruptionorobstructionofanyfunction,process,oractivityofthe
school.
Specialnote:Someareunderthebeliefthatanactivitythattakesplaceawayfromschoolisnottheschool’sbusiness.Beadvisedthatanyconductwhichcausesunnecessaryemotionaldistresstooneofourcommunityordamagestheschool’sreputationbecomesourbusinessandwereservetherighttoaddressandconsequencesaidmisconduct.B. PRIVILEGEOFPARTICIPATION
Whileparticipationinextracurricularactivities–eitherdirectlyorasaspectator–isanimportantpartofhighschool,itremainsaprivilegedependentuponastudent’sgoodconductandcitizenship.Theadministrationreservestherighttosuspend,fordefiniteperiodsoftime,astudent’seligibilitytoparticipateinanyschoolrelatedextracurricularactivityforrepeatedorseriousmisconduct.AnyverifiedviolationofthePowersCatholicStudentCodeofconductwillresultinconsequencesspecificallyrelatingtosuspensionfromparticipationinextracurricularactivities.ThisincludesbehavioratorawayfromschoolthatdisruptsorderorreflectspoorlyonPowersCatholicHighSchool.
Studentsmustbepresentfortheentireschooldayinordertoparticipatein–orattend–anyextra-curriculareventsponsoredbytheschool.Exceptionsmaybegrantedbytheschooladministration.Itisincumbentuponastudentwhomissedanypartoftheschooldaytoseekpermissioninadvanceifthereareextenuatingcircumstances.

C. OTHER/MINORINFRACTIONSToavoidbeingcitedforotherinfractions,studentsshouldobservebasic,commoncourtesies.Examplesincludewalkinginthehallways,maintainingquietinthehallwayswhileclassesareinsession,beingpoliteandhonestindealingswithothers,takingcareofone’sownlitter,usingcarewiththepropertyoftheschool,usinggoodlanguage,etc.
D. DETENTIONOBLIGATIONDetentionwillbeheldeachweekontheseconddayofclass(normallyaTuesday)from3:15-4:00.StudentswhoreceiveadetentionarerequiredtoserveitontheTuesdayofthe“nextweek”.Anystudentwhoisinschoolondetentiondaymustservetheirdetentionorwillbesuspendedfromschoolthefollowingday.AnyexcusefromthisobligationrequirestheadvancepermissionoftheAdministration.
E. SUSPENSIONSuspensionfromclassorschoolisastatementabouttheseriousnessofaninfraction-orseriesofinfractions-ofschoolpolicy.Itspurposeistoraisetheawarenessofastudentandtoresultinchangedbehavior.Anymissedclasstimeduetosuspensionwillinevitablyhaveaneffectonastudent’sacademicprogress.Teacherswillnotberesponsibleforextraworktoaccommodatestudentswhohavebeensuspendedfromschool.Thefollowingwillapplytosuspendedstudents:
1. Testsandmajorprojectswillbetakenand/ordueonthedayofthestudent’sreturn.2. Studentsmustbringwiththemnecessaryschool/readingmaterialstokeepthembusywhile
theyareservingin-schoolsuspensions.3. Theschoolreservestherighttomandatethatcertainsuspensionsbeservedathomerather
thanatschool.Inthiscase,missedclassworkmayNOTbemadeup.Innocasewillastudentbesenthomewithoutaparentbeingnotifiedinadvance.
4. Studentsmaynotparticipateinanyschoolsponsoredextracurricularactivityonanydayduringwhichtheyaresuspended.Thisincludesweekendswhenasuspensioncarriesovertheweekend.
F. EXPULSIONExpulsionisdefinedasremovalofthestudentfromPowersCatholic.Expulsionmayresultfromaseriousact(seeseriousinfractionsabove)orfromapatternofnon-cooperationwiththeschool'srulesorexpectations.
G. GUIDELINESFORREADMISSIONReadmissiontoPowersCatholicafterexpulsionmaybeconsideredonlyatthebeginningofanewsemesterandwillonlybepermittedupontheapprovaloftheReadmissionCommittee.Tobegintheprocess,thestudentandparentmustcompletethereadmissionpaperworkprovidedbytheschoolandsubmititforcommitteereview.Thecommitteewillrequireevidencethatthestudenthassuccessfullycompletedcourseworkatanotherschoolwithoutdisciplinaryproblemsand/orevidenceofassistanceobtainedtodealwithproblemareas.Readmissionwillinvolvecertainconditionssuchasabehaviorcontractandcommunicationwiththestudent'soutsidetherapist,courtcaseworker,orotherappropriateprofessional.Additionally,thestudent’seligibilitytoparticipateinextracurricularactivitiesmayberestricted.
H. DRUGTESTING

PertheguidelinesoftheDioceseofLansing,allhighschoolstudentswillbeparticipatinginanannualdrugscreening.ThespecificdetailsofthisDrugTestingPolicyareavailableinAppendixAofthisdocument.
I. COMPUTER/INTERNETANDRELATEDTECHNOLOGIESTheuseofcomputers,theInternetandallrelatedtechnologiesatPowersCatholicHighSchoolisaprivilege,notaright.Failuretoabidebytheschoolpoliciesandproceduresmayresultinthecancellationofthatprivilege.Schooldisciplinaryactionmaybetakenand/orappropriatelegalactiontakenforviolationsthatareunethicalorconstituteacriminaloffense.Seriousviolationsmayresultinsuspensionorexpulsion.Allusersmustsignanacceptableuseagreement.Studentsmusthaveparent/guardiansigntheagreement.Theagreementmustbeonfileintheschoolbeforetheschooltechnologiesareused.ThetechnologypolicyandformsareavailableontheschoolwebsiteandinAppendixBofthisdocument.AcceptableUse:TheuseofComputers/Internetandrelatedtechnologiesmustbeinsupportofeducation,researchandbeconsistentwiththeeducationalobjectivesoftheDioceseofLansing.

SOCIALLIFESocialeventsarecoordinatedthroughandapprovedbytheadministration.TheseeventsareopentoPowersCatholicstudentsandourregularcodeofconductisineffectregardlessofwheretheschool-sponsoredactivityistakingplace.Thisincludesalldances,athleticcontests,NHSFunNights,intramuralsports,dramaandmusicactivities,dodgeballtournaments,Powderpuff,andanyotherschoolactivity.Atanyschool-sponsoredevent,searchesmaybeconductedonanyvehicleand/orpersonalbelongings.

A. MEMBERSHIP
PowersCatholicHighSchoolisamemberoftheMichiganHighSchoolAthleticAssociationandtheSaginawValleyLeague.
B. THEPOWERSCATHOLICATHLETEStudentsparticipatingintheathleticprogramareexpectedtoobservethefollowingguidelines-athletes:

C. MICHIGANHIGHSCHOOLATHLETICASSOCIATION:
SummaryofEligibilityRulesforSeniorHighSchoolStudents:• Readtheserulescarefully,andbesureyouunderstandthem.• IfyouhaveanyquestionsaskyourcoachorathleticdirectorBEFOREyouparticipateand

6. Undergraduatestanding:Youmustnotbeahighschoolgraduate.7. Transfers:Astudentwhotransfersfromonehighschooltoanotherhighschoolisineligible
toparticipateinaninterscholasticathleticcontestforone(1)fullseasonofanysporttheyparticipatedinattheirpreviousschoolunlessthestudentqualifiesunderoneormoreoftheMHSAAexceptions.AlltransferstudentsmustmeetwiththeAthleticDirectortoreviewtheirstatusasastudentathlete.Theconferencemusttakeplacepriortothefirstcompetition.
8. Awards:Astudentmayaccept,forparticipationinathletics,asymbolicormerchandiseawardwhichdoesnothaveavalueorcostinexcessof$15.00.Thismaynotbeintheformofcashormerchandisecertificates.Banquets,luncheons,dinners,non-competitivetrips,andfeesoradmissionstobeaspectatoratevents,ifacceptedinkind,arepermittedunderthisregulation.
9. AmateurPractices:Thestudentmustnotacceptanymoneyorothervaluableconsideration(merchandise,etc)forparticipatinginanyformofathletics,sports,orgames,forofficiatingininterscholasticathleticcontests,orforhavingsignedacontractwithaprofessionalteam.
10. LimitedTeamMembership:(a)Astudentwho,afterpracticingwithorparticipatinginanathleticcontestorscrimmageasamemberofahighschoolathleticteam,participatesinanyathleticcompetitionnotsponsoredbyhis/herschoolinthesamesportduringthesameseason,shallbecomeineligibleforaminimumofthenextthree(3)contestsandmaximumoftheremainderofthatseasoninthatschoolyear.(b)AstudentshallnotcompeteatanytimeinanysportunderM.H.S.A.A.jurisdictioninanyofthefollowingevents:1)“All-Star”contests;2)“All-Star”fund-raisingevents;3)Anyeventwhichisorpurportstobeanationalhighschoolchampionshiporthequalificationthereto.Participationinsuchacontestbyahighschoolstudentshallcausethatstudenttobecomeineligibleforallinterscholasticathleticsforamaximumperiodofoneyearofschoolenrollmentfromthedateoftheathlete’slastviolationofthisRegulation.(c)Astudentmayparticipateasanindividualatanytimewithoutlossofinterscholasticeligibility:1)AsamemberofaNationalTeamor2)InanOlympicDevelopmentProgram.

CODEOFCONDUCTFORATHLETESPhilosophy:PowersCatholicathletesareexpectedtosetanexampleofgoodcitizenshipandsportsmanshipfortheirhighschool.Thepurposeoftheathleticcodeistohelpstudentsdevelopself-controlandself-disciplineinestablishingandmaintainingacceptablebehavioralstandards.SportsmanshipResponsibilities:Goodsportsmanshipisnotaninbornquality,butitcanbedevelopedbyfollowingjustafewsimpleguidelines.Thebasicfundamentalsofgoodsportsmanshipincludethefollowingexpectations:

E. WINNINGISFORADAY;SPORTSMANSHIPISFORALIFETIME
RegulationsforAthleticsAnathletemaybesuspendedfromparticipationinallathleticcontestsandpracticesforadefiniteperiodoftimebytheAthleticDirectorforpersistentdisobedience,grossmisdemeanor,oractionsthatcouldbeconstruedasdetrimentaltotheathleticprogramoftheschool.Listedbelowareotherviolationsforwhichanathletecouldbesuspendedfromcompetition.
1. Drinking,smokingandsubstanceabuse• Anathletefoundguiltyofdrinking,smoking,vaping,orbeinginpossessionofalcohol,
tobaccoillegaldrugsorbannedsubstancesatanytimeduringhis/herattendanceatPowersCatholic,he/shemaybesubjecttoanautomaticsuspensionforupto25%ofthecurrentorupcomingathleticseason.AnystudentwhotestspositiveforillegalsubstanceundertheguidelinesoftheDrugTestingPolicywillbesubjecttothatpolicyandmayuponadministrativereviewbeexemptfromaninitialsuspensionundertheathleticpolicy.Thesuspensionwillbeissuedbasedontheconfirmationoftheoffense.Thesuspensionincludespracticeandiseffectiveimmediatelyordependingonthetimingoftheviolation,itwillbecomeeffectivetheweekofthefirstsuspendedcontest.
• Term:Ifaseasonendsandonlyapercentageofthesuspensionhasbeenserved,theremainingpercentagewillbeappliedtotheathlete’snextseasoninwhichhe/sheparticipates,regardlessofsport.Thesuspensionisacknowledgedasservedonlyiftheathletecompletestheseasonasamemberoftheteam.
• Ifthemaximumnumberofregularseasoncontestsarescheduled,thefollowingtableistobeapplied.Otherwise,thesuspensionwillbedeterminedbytheAthleticDirectorbasedonthenumberofcontestsscheduled–uptobutnottoexceed25%oftheseason’scontests.Intheeventofacancellationofacontest,thesuspensionwillbeservedduringthenextscheduledcontest.

3. AttendanceatSchool• Athletesmustbepresentfortheentireschooldayinordertoparticipateinpracticeora
gameunlesspermissionisgrantedbyoneoftheschooladministrators.
4. AthletesNotCompletingaSeasonwithaTeam• Anathletewhoelectsnottocompletetheseasononateamoncetheathletehas
participatedasateammemberafterthefirstscheduledcontestcannotjoinanotherteamduringtheseasonwithouttheconsentofbothcoachesandtheAthleticDirector.
• Ifanathleteleavestheteamduetoinjuryorillnessonaphysician’srecommendationandlateriscertifiedascapabletoparticipateinathletics,suchathletesmayrejointheteam,orifmutuallyagreedbycoachesinvolved,anyotherteam.
• SpecialcircumstancesnotincludedintheaboveitemsmustbeclearedthroughtheAthleticDirector.
5. SuspensionfromSchool• Anyathletesuspendedorexpelledfromschoolisautomaticallysuspendedfromallathletic
teamsduringthatperiodoftime.

endingdatesofseasons,byschedulesandbytheneedforproperphysicalconditioning.• Ifastudentcannotattendearlypracticesessionsormustmisspartofaseasondueto
familyvacations,thestudentmustrealizethatthechancesofplayingormakingtheteamaregreatlyreduced.However,acoachmaynotdismissoreliminateaplayerfromtheteamformissingpracticeduringaschool-scheduledvacation.Practicesessionsandgame/meetschedulescannotbearrangedaroundvacationsforindividuals.
• Maintainingproperphysicalconditioningdictatestheneedforpracticeduringthevariousvacationsthatoccurthroughouttheyear.
• Coacheswillreviewthescheduleforpracticeandgames/meetsatthebeginningofaseason.However,studentswhomisspracticesmustearntheirstartingassignmentsorteampositionoveragain.Noassignmentorteampositionwillbeheldforathleteswhiletheyareonvacation,norwilltherebeanyotherpenaltygiventotheathlete.
8. AcademicEligibilityforAthletes• Theprimaryfunctionofschoolistoprovidestudentswithalearningenvironment.Itisthe
desireoftheschoolthatallstudentsmakeuseofthisopportunity.Withthisgoalinmind,academiceligibilityrequirementsareineffectatPowersforallathletes.(SeeAcademicEligibilityPolicy)
XI. GRIEVANCEPROCEDURESDiocesanregulationsdirectthatstudentsorparentswhohavea“complaintofawrongoraninjusticeallegedlysuffered(bythemshallmakea)sincereattempttoresolveanycomplaintsbymeansofaconferencebetweentheconcernedparties.”Inpractice,thismeansthatparentswouldtalktoacoachbeforegoingtotheathleticdirector.Theywouldtalktoateacherbeforeseeingtheprincipal.Theywouldtalktotheprincipalbeforerequiringassistancefromthediocesaneducationoffice.Wehopethatmostproblemswhicharisemightberesolvedatthefirstlevelofcommunication;however,wealsounderstandthatnoteveryissueisthateasilysolved.Thatiswhythispolicyisinplace.Thewelfareofourchildrenisofconcernnotonlytoparents,buttoourschoolstaffaswell.Thoughwecannotpromiseyoucompletesatisfactionineverymatterthatcomestoourattention,wedopromisethatwewilllistentoyourconcernsandmakeourbestefforttoresolvethem.Asalways,thankyoufortheprivilegeofworkingwithandforyourchildren.

Everystudentwillprovideahairsampleorcheekswabsampleduringtheschooldaythatwillbescreenedforthefollowingdrugs:cocaine,opiates,PCP,amphetamines,andmarijuana.Hairsampleswillbecollectedbytrainedstaffinasecurelocation.TheactualtestingofthehairorcheekswabsamplewillbedonebytheOmegaLaboratoriesInc.basedoutofOhio,thatservicesvariousorganizationsaroundtheworld.TestresultswillbeavailabletoonlyPCHSadministratorsthroughapasswordprotectedweblink.ApositivedrugtestwillactivatetheprocessdescribedbelowandeventuallyoutlinedinmainbodyofthisStudentHandbook.Inadditiontotheonemandatoryscreeningforeachstudentinthefall,therewillalsoberandomsamplingofstudentsthroughouttheschoolyear.
B. DRUGPOLICY:INTRODUCTION ThePowersCatholicHighSchool(PCHS)communityformsstudentsspiritually,intellectually,andsociallyintofaithfuldisciplesofJesusChrist.OurPCHScommunity(includingourparents,students,faculty,staffandadministration)pledgestoengageinthedevelopmentofourstudentstogrowtowardahealthy,safe,moralandCatholiclifestyle.ThePCHScommunityrecognizesthechallengesthatadolescentsfaceintoday'ssociety,withregardtoalcohol,drugs,andothersubstances.AstheCatechismoftheCatholicChurchobserves,abuseofdruginflicts"gravedamageonhumanhealthandlife."ThePCHSDrugPolicyhasafocusonstudent-parentparticipation,restorativesupport,andrecognitionofthemoralsignificanceofdrugabuse.AttendanceataCatholichighschoolisnotaright,butitisaprivilege.Withthatprivilege,comecertainresponsibilities.Weholdstudentsandtheirparents,orguardians,toahighcodeofconductinareasthataffectthewell-beingandsafetyofallstudents.Allstudentsandparentsarerequiredtoconsenttoparticipationinalltheaspectsofthispolicyanditsaccompanyingadministrativeregulationasaconditionofthestudent'scontinuedenrollmentatPowersCatholicHighSchool.(Throughoutthispolicy,areferenceto"parents"includesasingleparent,guardian,fosterparent,step-parent,custodialrelative,orotherpersonhavingresponsibilityforthewelfareofthestudent,asthecontextandthestudent'ssituationrequire).
C. APPLICABILITYThepolicyappliestoeveryPCHSstudent,fromthedayoforientationuntilthestudent'slastschool-affiliatedeventiscompleted.Thepolicyappliesatalltimesandinallplaces,throughoutthestudent'senrollmentatPCHS.Therearenotimes,nodays,noplaces,andnocircumstancesinwhichthepolicydoesnotapply.Astudent'sbehaviorawayfromschoolandintheschoolcanaffectthesafetyofthestudentorothers.Itcanalsobeasignofasignificantissueinthestudent'slifeandcanaffecttheoverallwell-beingoftheschoolcommunity.Forthisreason,theparentsagreethatPCHShasfullandcompletediscretiontoimposediscipline,ortakeotheractionasitdeemsappropriateforbehavioroccurringattheschoolandawayfromschool.

F. PROCESS---SCREENINGFORDRUGUSAGE
StudentswillbescreenedfordrugusageutilizingaDiocesanapproveddrugtestingcompany(OmegaLaboratories).
1. AnnualScreening:Allstudentswillbescreenedfordrugsatleastonceperyear.2. RandomScreening:AnystudentenrolledinPowersCatholicHighSchoolissubjectto
screeningfordrugusageonarandomlyselectedbasisinadditiontotheannualscreening.Consequently,somestudentsmaybetestedmorethanonceayear.
3. Follow-UpScreening:Anystudentfoundtobeinviolationofthisdrugpolicywillbesubjecttofollow-upscreening.
4. TransferStudents:Alltransferstudentsshallsubmittoscreeningfordrugusageonadateassoonaspossibleafterregisteringforclasses.
G. DRUGSCREENINGMETHODPowersCatholicHighSchool,atthistime,willusehair-samplingproceduresorcheekswabproceduresforthepurposesofpolicyimplementation.Ifhairsamplingistobeused,asmallsampleofheadhairwillbecollectedfromthestudentsbytrainedpersonnel.However,ifasampleofheadhaircannotbeobtained,bodyhaircollectedfromthearmorlegwillbeusedforthedrugscreeningmethod.Ifbodyhairisalsounabletobecollected,analternativemethodoftestingwillbeadministered(i.e.,urineatatestingcenterand/orsaliva).Therefore,itisexpected(exceptincertainsituations)thatstudentswillwearahairstylethatallowsforasampleofheadhairtobecollected.
H. NOTIFICATIONOFTESTRESULTSNotificationoftestresultswillbedeliveredconfidentiallytotheadministrationbythedrugtestingcompany.Theadministrationwillnotifytheparentsofanystudentswhohavetestedpositiveoncetheresultshavebeenreviewed.Onoccasion,parentswillbeaskedtocometotheschoolatthefirstmutuallyconvenienttimetodiscussthereport.Itislefttothediscretionoftheadministrationastowhetherornottheywillnotifyparentsandguardiansinregardtoanegativetestresult.
I. CONSEQUENCES-ALLOFFENSES1. ParentMeeting(mandatory)-Thestudentandaparentorguardianwillmeetwiththe
supportgroupwhichmayincludeAdministrators,counselors,andthechaplaintodiscusstheoffenseandtheconsequencesundertheDrugPolicy.Astaffmentormayalsobeassignedtothestudentforextrasupport.
2. SchoolCounselingandTreatmentProgram(mandatory)-ThehighschoolcounselorwillmakeareferraltoaPCHS-approvedandlicensedassessmentagency(Assessment).The

studentwillprovideacopyoftheassessmentandtheplanresultingfromtheAssessmenttothePCHScounselorandtheadministration.ThestudentisrequiredtocompletetheplansuccessfullyandwillprovideanyverificationrequestedbyPCHS.AnyexpensesincurredfortheAssessmentand/oranytreatmentprogramrequiredbytheplanwillbetheresponsibilityofthestudent/parentandnotPCHS.Thestudent/parentwillberequiredtocontactarecommendedCounseling/TreatmentAgencyassoonaspossibleaftermeetingwithaPCHScounselorandobtainingthenecessarycontactinformation.
3. SpiritualCounseling(stronglyrecommended)-TheoccasionofanoffenseisanopportunitytoencounterChrist,whosepositivemessageisoneofTruthandRedemption.CatholicstudentswillmakeanappointmentwiththeschoolChaplain,thestudent'sparishpastor,orotherpriest,forspiritualguidanceandconscienceformation,andhavetheopportunity,ifdesired,fortheSacramentofReconciliation.Non-CatholicstudentswillmakeanappointmentwiththeschoolChaplainoraministerwithinthestudent'sreligioustraditionforsimilarpurposes.
4. MandatoryservicehourswillbeservedataPCHSapprovedagencyorprogram(theseservicehoursarenotcountedtowardthePCHSservicerequirementforeverystudent).ThestudentwillprovideacopyoftheservicehoursperformedwithasignatureofanagencyorprogramsupervisortotheAdministrationandPCHScounselor.ThestudentisrequiredtocompletetheservicehourssuccessfullyandwillprovideanyverificationrequestedbyPCHS.

7. ProtectingandStoringYouriPad
7.1 iPadIdentification:
• iPadspurchaseddirectlyfromAppleincludefreeengraving.StudentsshouldalsotakecaretolabelallotherformsofequipmentrelatingtotheiPad(charger,case,etc).iPadspurchasedfromothervendorsmuststillbelabeled.
7.2 StoringYouriPad:
• WhenstudentsarenotusingtheiriPads,theyshouldbestoredintheirlockerorkeptwiththestudent.NothingshouldbeplacedontopoftheiPadwhenstoredinstudentlockers.StudentsareencouragedtotaketheiriPadshomeeverydayafterschool,regardlessofwhetherornottheyareneeded.iPadsshouldnotbestoredinastudent’svehicleatschoolorathome.DoNOTleaveyouriPadinaplacethatisexperiencingextremehotorcoldconditions(i.e.carinsummerorwinter).Extremeheatwilldamagetheunititselfandextremecoldwillcauseseverescreendamage.

XIV. APPENDIXC–TUITIONPAYMENTPOLICY
Powers Catholic High School makes every effort to provide an affordable, quality, Christ-centered education for our students. With tuition being our major annual funding source, it is imperative that all families are committed to paying tuition, fundraising obligations, and fees (collectively, “tuition”) in a timely manner. To that end, the following Powers Catholic Tuition Payment Policy is effective as of August 1, 2019. PaymentDueDatesandExpectations:Tuitionpaymentsaredueonthe5thofeachmonth.AnyoneenrolledinanautomaticACHwithdrawalprogramwillhavepaymentswithdrawnonthe15thofthemonth.Additionally,a$25.00pastduefeewillbeaddedtotheaccountiftuitionisnotpaidbythe15thofeachmonth.Ifextenuatingcircumstancesshouldarisethatwillcauseadelayinpayment,parents/guardianswillbeexpectedtocontactourBusinessOfficeinadvanceofmissinganypayments.Ifnecessary,alternativepaymentarrangementsmaybediscussedonatemporarybasis.
30DaysPastDue:A“PastDueNotice”willbesenttoparents/guardiansviaemailwhenatuitionpaymentbecomes30dayspastdue.Theentirepastdueamountincludinganypastduefee,istobepaidinfullwithintwoweeksofreceivingthe30daypastduenoticeinordertoavoidanyfurtherpenalty.
60DaysPastDue:Ifanypast-duetuitionowedreaches60dayspastdue,andnoalternativepaymentarrangementshavebeenagreedupon,thestudent(s)willnotbepermittedtoparticipateinschooleventsorextra-curricularactivities(including,butnotlimitedto,sportsoracademicteams,clubs,plays,dancesetc.).Inaddition,asecond“PastDueNotice”willbesenttothefamily.
90DaysPastDue:Ifanypast-duetuitionowedreaches90dayspastdueandnoalternativepaymentarrangementshavebeenagreedupon,inadditiontothestepsabove,thestudent(s)willnotbepermittedtoattendclassesforthefollowingquarteroranysubsequentquarteruntiltheaccountiscurrent.
Inaddition,sinceindividualstudentaccountsareinvoicedonafamilybasis,thesepolicieswillaffecteachchildinthefamily.Regardlessofcustody,bothparentsarejointlyresponsiblefortuitionandotherfeeschargedbyPCHS.
Furthermore,seniorstudentswillnotbepermittedtoreceivetheircap&gown,orparticipateingraduationceremoniesand/oranyothersenioractivitiesifANYfinancialobligationsareoutstanding.
Inallcases,PowersCatholicHighSchoolreservesallrightstocollectanypast-duetuition.Thismayresultinreferringyouraccounttoacollectionagencyasalastresort.ItisourgoaltoprovideALLofourstudentswithanexceptionalfaith-fillededucationandourdesiretoworkinpartnershipwithallofourfamiliestoachievethisobjective.Inordertoaccomplishthisgoal,wemustimplementaconsistenttuitionpolicythatisfair,consistent,andreasonable.Thankyouforyourunderstandingwiththisprocess.
