New Program . . . Same Support Thank you for participating in the 28th Year of the Giant Eagle Apples for Students program. As you are aware we announced some BIG changes this year by offering $1.1 million in cash to schools so they will have greater flexibility in satisfying their overall educational needs. The same four periods will allow supporters to collect points throughout the year and a check will be issued at the end of the fourth period. You will still be able to review the progress periodically on the Apples for Students webpage on Schools.GiantEagle.com. We are hopeful that this will provide needed funds to areas of your school that are now experiencing shortfalls or simply provide extra dollars to enhance the learning environment for the children. We at Giant Eagle feel privileged that we can be a part of helping to educate the next generation. We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all school staff and support affiliations that are so deeply involved with raising our youth. It’s “lunch-packing” season. Having a health-smart lunch is a way to help your child be ready for learning and activity! Andpacking a lunch that earns an “A” is easy if you have a game plan. Involve the children in choosing the foods and packingthe lunch. It’s a way to get them to take some personal responsibility for their own health and they are more likely to eatwhat they choose. Here are some tips:

Have the right equipment - Something to transport the food to school and hold it at a safe temperature until lunchtime.Check out the great lunch bag ideas at Giant Eagle but do let your child make the selection – that is the other “cool” factor!

Have a game plan:• Plan around lead players - protein, healthy fat, whole grains

o Whole wheat tortillas or wraps, or sandwiches with turkey, peanut, sunflower seed or soy butter, hummus or leanham. Try the new Sandwich Thins!o Salad with cut cheese, lean meat, beans, or other protein foods.o Yogurt and a whole grain granola bar.o Hard cooked egg slices or cheese stick with a side salad or soup.o A pasta salad with cubes of low fat cheese, lean meat, orbeans.

• Add crunch power - Fruits and veggies for the vitamins andminerals they provide. Many are “fun foods” that play a dualrole as a treat!o Cut mango and papaya with a yogurt dip.o Apple slices, orange sections or other fruit ready to enjoy.o Raw veggies and salsa, or lower fat dipo Yogurt or a yogurt parfait - . Granola, fruit and yogurto Kiwi…washed and cut in half and packaged with a spoon soit can be scooped out and enjoyed. o Cut fruit or fruit kebobs (alternate fruit cubes, strawberries andgrapes on a straw. Add some cheese cubes and this can moveup to being a lead player.

• Play the extras but keep the portion small - A small cookie, thepretzels or low fat tortilla chips, air-popped popcorn or a minichocolate bar or 2-3 chocolate kisses. A trail mix fits the bill as something crunchy but can incorporate theextras…add some mini-chocolate chips to toasted oat cereal, pretzel sticks, and nuts.

• And don’t forget the hydration factor… something to wash it down - a bottle of water, a thermos or smallcontainer of milk, 100% juice are good choices.

• Quick tips:o Empty some of the water out of a small bottle of water, reseal and freeze. Pop it in the lunch and let it thaw outfor lunch time. Be sure the lid is on tight!o Help keep others safe. Check with the school on guidance on peanut-free or other allergy zones. o Pack some disposable hand wipes…..for before and after lunch. Before lunch helps protect your child ….afterlunch helps to protect children who have food sensitivitieso And remember disposable forks or spoons and napkins!
