New Resource to Diagnose Learning DisabilitiesMiriam Foundation recently announced the establishment of the Cornelsen Diagnostic Center, which enables Miriam Learning Center (MLC) to provide free and reduced-cost assessment services for children who do not qualify for testing in the school setting and have limited resources to access private assessment services.

Established with a $100,000 grant by the Cornelsen Family Charitable Foundation, the Cornelsen Diagnostic Center is an integral part of Miriam as a “one stop shop” for learning disability resources and services in the St. Louis region.

“Through comprehensive evaluations, parents are provided a pathway to help their child become more successful,” explained Beth Rose, Director of Miriam Learning Center. “These assessments are needed to aid in diagnosing learning disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, speech language delays, sensory integration disorder, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues that may impact a student’s learning and functioning at home, in school, and within the community.”

The Cornelsen Diagnostic Center will provide comprehensive educational evaluations, psychological assessments, and occupational and speech/language evaluations for children with

learning challenges. Partial and full scholarships are available to families who demonstrate financial need and do not qualify for testing through other resources.

For more information about the Cornelsen Diagnostic Center and the services it provides, please contact Beth Rose at 314.961.1500.

Beth Rose, MLC Director, (left) and Andrew Thorp, Miriam Foundation Executive Director (right) are joined by Kristie Cornelsen and Casey Cornelsen St. John of the Cornelsen Family Foundation for the dedication of the Cornelsen Diagnostic Center.

Miriam Means service and CommitmentMiriam Foundation is among 11 businesses and two charities that will be presented with BBB TORCH Awards for exceptional ethical business practices and customer service from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois on November 2, 2012.

“This year’s TORCH Award winners are true shining examples of service and commitment, not only to their customers but to their employees and the community as well,” said Joanie Taylor, BBB Board Chair and Director of Consumer Affairs and Community Relations at Schnuck Markets, Inc. “Their exceptionally high standards inspire us all to bring our own personal best to the marketplace each and every day.”

Executive Director Andy Thorp said Miriam Foundation strives to operate like a business. “We want to be good stewards of people’s trust in us and their resources,” Thorp said.

The BBB will present the TORCH Awards at a luncheon on Friday, November 2 at the Chase Park Plaza. Tickets for the luncheon are available at $50 a person, or $500 for a table of 10. Patron tables for 10 are available for $1,500. Reservations can be made by calling 314.645.0606 or emailing [email protected].

endowment ensures our Future

miriam F O u n D At I O n

An endowment is a permanent fund established to benefit an institution. In an endowment fund, the principal is invested and only a portion of the investment earnings is spent. The fund has a specific purpose defined for which the income is to be applied. The rest of the earnings are directed back into the fund, so that the endowment grows over time. In this manner, the endowment becomes a perpetual source of funding for whatever the donor wishes to achieve.

While they do not quite date back to the Ming Dynasty, Miriam has had endowments for quite a long time. The first named fund was established in September of 1969 in honor of Stella Freund’s 50 years of Miriam membership by her children, Gladys Barker and Harold Freund. The “Stella M. Freund Special Educational Fund” has benefited countless needs over its 43 years and receives contributions to this day.

Today Miriam has $2.8 million in endowments. While most of them are for scholarships there is also a building endowment to help ensure our facilities always provide a safe and appropriate environment for our students, and a technology endowment which allows us to keep pace with advances in instructional media.

Although any amount may be given to the general endowment fund or to an existing endowment fund, a $25,000 gift is required to begin a new fund. With a new endowment, the donor may name the fund – typically, in honor of the donors – but sometimes in honor of a parent or child or other beloved or influential person in their lives. Many donors add to their endowments regularly, some add to their endowment occasionally, and some fund it with a single gift.

While endowments may certainly be funded during the donors’ lifetimes, they often are funded through estate gifts. If you are thinking of establishing a special fund, it is a good idea to talk to Miriam staff about it as you are working with your attorney. We will help you set up a simple document with Miriam so future generations will know how to use your gift. However, if you just want to assure that the annual gift you make now will always be available for Miriam’s use, you will want to know that Miriam spends 5% of the earnings annually from their endowment. If you give $1,000 a year, your gift can be made forever with an estate gift of $20,000. If you give $2,500 a year, your gift can be made forever with an estate gift of $50,000.

Some ask, “Why should I give to an endowment when there are so many immediate needs?” For every $1 million in endowment, Miriam has $50,000 a year to help students, keep technology current, and keep facilities in shape. There will always be immediate needs and a strong endowment is essential in helping Miriam plan to meet those needs in the future.

Miriam Foundation endowment FundsMiriam Foundation has launched a campaign to raise $400,000 in endowment funds by June 30, 2014.  Leading the charge are committee members:

• Berry Rounds Lane, Chair• Steve Rosenblum• Judi Scissors• Judy Zafft

Bellerive Country Club was the site of the 2012 Miriam Member Luncheon on June 8, 2012.  More than 50 guests attended the luncheon which was hosted by Bellerive member, Peggy Ritter.  The event honored several significant occasions including the transfer of the Miriam Board presidency from Gretchen Davis to Judi Scissors; the 50-year membership anniversaries of Doris Finger, Margaret Londy, and Evelyn Tischler; and the 50+ year anniversaries of 56 members.  A video of Miriam School students thanking each member by name and anniversary year was presented.

Bet on a Fun eveningIt’s a safe bet that “Miriam Night at the Races” will have furlongs-of-fun with an evening of fast-paced video horseracing, thrilling raffles, and exciting silent auctions — all to raise funds for the renovation of the Miriam School library.  Round up your friends and join us on Saturday,

October 20, 2012, in the Mary Ann Lee Gymnasium.  Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and the first race will start at 7:00 p.m.  There are many ways to participate in the event from getting a table of eight friends together to sponsoring a race!  See the flyer in this newsletter for more information.

Video horseracing is actual horseracing that has been filmed using multiple camera angles and narrated by a professional race announcer.  It captures all the suspense and action of being at the racetrack, while preserving the cleanliness of our gymnasium’s floor.
