LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

As we live out our life of faith, it is easy to lose heart and

lose confidence in God’s power and effective presence. We

can fall into apathy. Given the immensity of the concerns

that abound, we feel powerless and can become unmoti-

vated to persevere. To combat this weariness, Jesus tells his

friends to pray always. Persisting in prayer allows us to

find the determination, strength, and conviction to continue

on course even when presented with difficulties. If we are

determined in our pursuit of God, we will eventually find

God breaking through our darkness with the light of His

presence, gifting us with contemplative sight so that we can

see as He sees and love as He loves. It is only when we

take on the person of Christ that we are able, with God’s

help, to touch the world’s pain and loneliness.

Bishop’s Appeal... This year, our assessment is:

$56,942. To Date we have received:

163 Gifts for a total of $38,634

$18,308 to go till we reach our assessment!

DID YOU KNOW… that we have NEVER NOT made

our assessment (at least not in recent memory). We

know that times are tough for many of us, but if we

can all help in small or big ways to make our assess-

ment still owed ($18,000 +), we can indeed reach our

goal of $56,942

If we do not make our goal, next year, the difference

(or shortfall), will become a debt we will owe to the

Diocese. We are asking for everyone’s help, with a

pledge, or a gift , given today or mailed in next week

or given online through www.thebishopsappeal.org If you have not yet had a chance to make a gift to the ap-

peal, please pick up an envelope and drop into collection

basket today or mail or drop by the parish center this

coming week..

We thank you for all you have done for your parish and

we appreciate your continued support.

Through the Bishop’s Appeal, all parishes unite and become one family to support and sustain the pro-grams and services which educate the young, care for the elderly, feed the hungry, house the homeless and strengthen our Catholic faith in our homes, par-ishes and communities. Additionally, your support of the Appeal insures that individual parishes are provided with essential diocesan support services, thereby assisting in the growth and vitality of our parish communities.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER

UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE “Render a just decision for me against my adversary.” To-

day’s Gospel features a persistent widow who ekes out jus-

tice from a notoriously cold-hearted judge. Why does she

win the day? “Because the widow keeps bothering me.”

Jesus’ recommendation to the disciples is to be persistent in

prayer, because surely God the Father is far more attuned to

their needs than this judge. If only it were that easy, right?

We’ve all experienced the unanswered prayer, the silence

after our cries. When this continues, sometimes it can be

difficult to have faith in God or believe He answers

prayers. It can be easy to lapse into a sense of His distance.

We want Him to do something “fair,” which — in our lim-

ited view — typically means that something works out in

our favor.

There are, of course, many legitimate cries for justice. We

live in a fallen world filled with flawed human beings. We

hurt each other, sometimes grievously, and our efforts to

remake the world in our image can result in unjust, inhu-

mane systems. Faced with the problem of evil, we may

wonder how God will “secure the rights of his chosen

ones.” Sometimes, He may well seem “slow to answer

them.”

In the face of these very real questions, it’s important to

recall the words of the prophet Isaiah, that God’s thoughts

“are not [our] thoughts.” His ways are not our ways. God

respects the freedom He has given us. When we see what

free will has wrought, perhaps we question God’s better

judgment! Yet somehow, we hear that He mysteriously

works all things for our good. No matter what situation we

find ourselves in, we are always free to love. We are in-

vited to be persistent in our prayer, to continue bringing our

concerns before God in trusting surrender. We are invited

to love well in the circumstances we find ourselves in, to be

a light in the darkness. No matter when — or if — our

prayers are answered the way we would like, we are none-

theless invited to witness to “faith on earth.”
