Short-term Sunday School ClassThe Basics of Brueggemann

October 6 – November 3Old Testament Professor Walter Brueggemann is by many accounts one of the most influential biblical scholars of the past fifty years. Serving on the faculty of Columbia Theological Seminary for many years, Brueggemann has had a prolific career, publishing over one hundred books about issues related to scripture and how Christians are called to respond. Hendrix professor Robert (Bobby) Williamson will lead this four week class on the work of his former professor, examining some of the key ideas presented in Brueggemann’s major works. The class meets Sundays at 9:50 a.m. in Second Hall.

Second Cares … about Alzheimer’sand Other Dementias

Second Presbyterian provides many ways to support those with loved ones touched by dementia. We partner with Alzheimer’s Arkansas to provide respite care and support for caregivers. Second Presbyterian provides a financial grant to Alzheimer’s Arkansas’s respite care program for caregivers. We also participate in the organization’s annual fundraiser, the Walk of Love. On an early September Saturday morning, Second Presbyterian showed up in force to raise awareness and raise funds for caregiver support. We walked in honor or memory of loved ones, cheering on those around us. Our team is called Second Safari. Many thanks to Jamie Gomez for her Second Safari team leadership. Jamie and Liz Vaughn also prepared the first ever Second Safari banner to raise awareness for the cause! Second Safari won the award for Largest Community Team.Second Presbyterian also recently hosted a half-day educational event with UAMS for families dealing with early stages of dementia. The church continues to provide twice-monthly caregiver support groups for those caring for a loved one with dementia. Some caregivers also find support through the church’s Faith and Grief ministry. Resources: • Alzheimer’s Support Group at Second Presbyterian, first

and third Thursdays, 1:00 p.m. in the church library. Newcomers welcome at any time.

    • Faith and Grief at Second Presbyterian lunch program, third Tuesdays, 12:00 p.m. in Second Hall, RSVP.

Church PicnicWhat a beautiful day for a gathering at Ferncliff! Second Presbyterian celebrates our kinship as one family of faith every year with a picnic. On September 29, we rolled into the shaded Ferncliff spaces after our worship ended. We ate well, shared stories, laughed, fished, canoed, rocked, sat on swings, enjoyed lawn games, toured on the Ferncliff cart, and enjoyed each other and camp facilities. Access ramps and golf cart rides, life guards, and activity coaches helped to ensure an afternoon that was fun and accessible for all ages and sensitive to varieties of needs. Thanks to the leadership of our Fellowship Ministry and the many activity leaders who made this day fun and accident-free. While Caroline scored the competitions and Brian, Justin and others baited hooks, Coach Jolley rallied the troops in hula hoop, sack race, egg toss and fishing competitions. Bubbles floated from the dining hall balcony, requiring little effort thanks to a breezy day. The Shady Chute saw the usual exuberant action, as did Ferncliff ’s bounce house. We had a great time! Let’s do it again next year. Your ideas for next time are welcomed! Contact Jennifer Skinner or Alisa Secrest.

First & Third Monday MorningWomen’s Bible Study

If gratitude is good, why is it so hard to do? In her book Grateful, Diana Butler Bass invites readers to understand new dimensions of American spirituality. Although most of us know that gratitude is good—and good for us—there is a gap between our desire to be grateful and our ability to behave gratefully. Implications of the gap affect both our personal and public lives. Bass weaves together social science research, spiritual wisdom, and contemporary issues as she calls for a richer understanding and practice of gratitude. Join this eclectic group of women as we explore insights about the power of thankful living to change how we treat one another, and how we might transform our world. The Bible study meets 9:30-11:00 a.m. in Second Hall. Books will be available in the church office for $12.00.OCTOBER 7PrologueOCTOBER 21Part I Me: Emotions—Gifts and ThanksNOVEMBER 4Part II Me: Ethics—Awareness and Practice
